The name Elbaville is derived by using the § 2 first syllables of two prominent family names of the community at that o -•» time, Ellis and Bailey. The names of the men believed to have been used ^ 3 j are W. J. and W. R. Ellis and Richmond Bailey. Taking the "El" from =3 >: ^ Ellis and the "Ba" from Bailey and adding "ville", you have the name, ^ ' • Elbaville. d " i o o ; Later a group of people of the Elbaville Community decided to build a > - . church. The name Elbaville was adopted and used by the church. S r The first land grant was given to Elbaville Methodist Protestant Church ,] in 1872 by John F. Brinkley and wife to G. W. Sidden. The first deed 5 was made on May 19, 1880 to the trustees, G. W. Sidden and H. T. Smithdea]. The exact date the first church was built is not knov/n; but the cornerstone j of the present church states the date as being 1882. The lumber used j in constructing the church was dressed by hand by the men of the coiranunity. The church was weather-boarded and had five windows on each side. There were two single doors in the front in keeping with the tradition of separating the men from the women. Richard Myers, Sr. has built a replica of the first church. The land for the cemetery was given by W. J. and Dollie Ellis and W. R. Ellis on June 4, 1880. Nathaniel Ellis, son of W. J. and Dollie Ellis, was the first to be buried in the cemetery and was done so before the land was deeded. The date of his grave is April 2, 1880. The cemetery bears 52 family names including: Bailey, Ellis, Fry, Foster, Lyon, Haneline, Markland, Mechum, Myers, Orrell, Robertson, Sidden, Tucker, Waller and Zimmerman. The first official roll of the church is dated 1901 and contains 111 members. Among these names are the following which probably have descendants in the church membership today: Bonson Bailey, Joseph Carter, Anna Garwood, W. J. Ellis, Agnus Hege, Lizzie Hege, Susanna Markland, C. C. Myers, Carrie Orrell, J. E. B. Shutt, G. T. Tucker, Minnie Waller and Mittie Zimmerman. F. A. Potts was the first known church school superintendent. It is not known exactly who the first pastor was; however, in 1904 the pastor was listed as being George L. Reynolds. In 1901 Elbaville was a member of the Mocksville Circuit which included Dulins, Bethel, Union Chapel and Union Grove. In 1904 the church membership was 125 and Trustees were L. C. Crouse, David Myers, and L. A. Bailey. The Stewards were C. C. Myers, J. E. B. Shutt, L. H. Crouse, U. A. Orrell, S. E. Barnes and W. J. Ellis. In the years from 1904 to 1920 the following were Trustees: J. E. B. Shutt, L. P. Waller and the people listed above. During that same time the following people were Stewards: L. 0. Markland, Charles Carter, L. A. Bailey, David Myers, Sadie Tucker, Blanche Foster, Delia Crouse, H. B. Bailey and Clara Shutt. The classrooms were added to the church in the 1920's. Also the Elbaville School house which was probably built prior to the 1900's and stood next to the church was sold around 1925and the Church bought this land. In 1939 all Methodist Churches were unified and the name of the Church was changed to .Elbaville Methodist Church. In 1940, Elbaville was put on a five church charge with Advance, Mocks, Baileys Chapel and Fulton. DAVIE CO. A special service was iield recognizing older members as well as former pastors and their wives. Rev. and Mrs. Willard Stevens attended as did Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Braxton. Rev. Braxton was the guest speaker, recalling Elbaville as part of his first charge. He served the Elbaville Church in 1928- 29., Mrs. Laura Stevens presented special music on the program. Recognition was made of Mrs. Thelma Blakley, a member ,wl)0 served with great dedication in the Elbaville Church and who died Oct. 8, 1982. Historical information of the church was presented by Mrs. Connie Singleton and included the following information of interest throughout the area. The name Elbaville derived from two prominent families of the community in 1870. The "El" from Ellis and the "Ba" from Bailey with "ville" added to complete the name. The first land grant wa^ given to Elbaville Methodist Protestant Church by John F. Brinkley and wife in 1872. The first deed was made on May 19, 1880 to trustees, G.W. Sidden H. T. Smithdeal. The cornerslone reads 1662, although the exact date of the first building is unknown. According to information from the church, lumber used in con structing the building was hand dressed by the men of the com munity. The building was wealherboarded and hud five windows on either side with two front doors-the two single doors were in keeping with the tradition of separating the men from the women. A replica of the original sanctuary has been constructed by Richard Myers. It is on exhibit at ^e church. Land for the cemetery was given by W. P. and Dollie Ellis and W. R. Ellis on June 4, 1880. Nathaniel Ellis, son of W. P. and PoUie Ellis was the first to be burried in the cemetery; the date given was April 2,1880 - before the land was deeded. The first official church roll is dated 1901 and contains 111 names. P. A. Potts was the first known church school superintendent. In 1901 Elbaville was a part of the Mocksville Circuit which also in cluded Dulins, Bethej, Union Chapel and Byerly's Chapel Methodist Protestant Churches." When all Methodist Churches were combined in 1939 the name became Elbaville Methodist Church and in 1940 the charge was realigned and included the Advance, Mocks Baileys Chapel, Elbaville, and Pulton churches. The members of the congregation began construction of the present sanctuary on May 10, 1955. Ap proximately 2500 men and machine hours were donated and $15,000 was raised toward the new building. The bell from the old church was placed in the steeple of the new church and was rung by Mr. Ollie Myers until his death. The new church was dedicated on Homecoming Sunday, 1957. The Elbaton Charge was formed in 1959 and exists * still with Elbaville, Pulton, and Bailey's Chapel on the circuit. A building fund was re established in 1964 and monies contributed during the pastorates of Billy Clinard, Brice Smith and Willard Stevens. With additional money received from the Davie County Church extension and the Duke Endowment Fund, the building was completed during 1975 and was dedicated March 21, 1976. The membership at Elbaville United Methodist Church is presently 132. DAVIE COUNTY ENTERf^SE RECORD.
