Flock, Donald "Don" Dean
Donald "Don" Dean Flock, 81, of Mocksville, NC, departed this world on October 3, 2021, from his home
in Davie County.
Don, as he was so lovingly known as, was born on January 6, 1940 in South Greensburg, PA. He was
the son of the late Willard Flock and Ada Grace (Yeager) Flock. In addition to his parents, Don was
preceded in death by his sister, Janet Flock in 1961, his brother, Willard "Jim" James Flock in 2006, and
his brother-in-law, Melvin Albright.
In life, Don attended Pennsylvania schools. Later, he started a career in the Transportation Industry as
a truck driver for ABF Freight. Don worked as a truck driver for 45 years until 2003 when he retired. Right
before his retirement, Don was awarded the 1,000,000 mile award for his accomplishments on the
road. When Don wasn't traveling, he enjoyed wood work, landscaping, and being an all-around handy
man.
Don is survived by his two daughters, DeAnna Flock of Shippensburg, PA, and Dawn Flock Clements
(Robert) of Houston, TX, a brother, Robert Flock (Susan) of South Greensburg, PA, his twin sister,
Dorothy Flock Albright of Daniels, WV, his grandchildren, Ryan Palmer (Mercedes) of Red Lion, PA,
Brittnee Palmer of Shippensburg, PA, great-granddaughter, Ava Ott, along with three nephews and five
nieces who will all miss him dearly.
A memorial service for Don will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania.

Mr. David Peden Montgomery, Jr. of Bermuda Run, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021 at
Forsyth Medical Center. He was born January 12, 1936 in Charleston, S.C. to the late David Peden
Montgomery and Mae Pieper Montgomery. He served in the US Navy and had retired with 36
years of service as Vice President Engineering with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
He is survived by his wife, Molly D. Montgomery of the home; one daughter, Kimberly M. Edwards
(David Edwards); one son, David P. "Trey" Montgomery, III; two grandsons, Erik Edwards of
Norfolk, VA. and Ryan Edwards of Athens, GA. and one brother Henry Montgomery of Austin, TX.

Mrs. Dorothy Grey Hendrix Beauchamp, 92, of Clemmons, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021
at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 29,1929 In Davie County to John Carl
Hendrix and Ora Spillman Hendrix. She is preceded in death by her husband, Earlle Roosevelt
"Jaybird" Beauchamp. Surviving are four children, Earlie R. Beauchamp, Jr. (Lorna) of Advance;
Bonnie Whisenhunt (Mark Beroth) of Clemmons; John Keith Beauchamp of Winston-Salem and
Sallie Crump (Frank) of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Amy Mabe (Kevin), Crystal Messick
(Jayson), Lori Crump, Brent D. Whisenhunt and Kristie Trivette; and six great-grandchildren and

Anthony Ray 'Tony" Allison, 57, died Tuesday, Sept.
28, 2021, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in
Winston-Salem.
He was bom July 31, 1964 in Davie County to Mar

Miss Richelle Louise Bailey, 49 of Marion, died on
Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical
Center in Winston-Salem.
She was bom Oct. 17,1971 in Davie County to Rick

munications. Following graduation, she moved to Marion
and began her career at The McDowell News. She was a
reporter for almost two decades, serving as assistant edi
tor for 18 of those years. She covered crime, emergency
services and courts, but also excelled at off-beat feature
stories, landing her seven N.C. Press Association awards.
In May 2013, she joined the McDowell County Sheriff's
Office as the administrative/public information assistant.
She also served as the CrimeStoppers coordinator with the
Marion Police Department. One of her greatest passions
was Project Christmas for McDowell County. Every year,
she led the efforts to ensure that local children and families
in need received Christmas gifts. She devoted countless
hours and nearly 23 years of service to this organization.
She was actively involved in the Fraternal Order of Police
and Relay for Life. To the many friends and family that
knew her, she had a small frame but a mighty heart. She
put others' needs before her own and was willing to lend a
helping hand. Her kindheartedness has impacted countless
lives and will continue to live on in her legacy.
She was honored during a memorial service at 3 p.m.
on Sunday, Oct. 3 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel
in Advance, led by Pastor Rodney Hellard. A police escort
brought her body to Marion for a service on Tuesday, Oct.
5 at 4 p.m.

before enlisting in the Army, serving in the 66th Counter
Intelligence Corps in Stuttgart, Germany for two years.
After his discharge, he graduated from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving bachelor's and
MBA degrees.
Originally entering the field of medical sales, he found
his niche in banking after he and Tirzah started a family,
first as a branch manager with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte
in 1960. He then accepted a job with Waccamaw Bank in
1966 in Whiteville, rising to senior vice president of mar
keting and advertising, where he wrote the regulatory ap
plication for the first multibank holding company in North
Carolina, United Carolina Bancshares. He graduated from
the Stonier Graduate School of Banking in 1970. In 1974,
he became the president and CEO of Gateway Bank in
Greensboro, until its merger with Northwestern Bank. In
1981 he was an organizer, president and CEO of Triad
Bank, acquired by United Carolina Bank in 1992, which
ultimately became part of BB&T.
He was an enthusiastic Rotarian, where he was a mem
ber of Crescent Rotary Club, serving as its president,
eventually becoming a district governor, and a district
foundation chair. He also served as district chair of the
Boy Scouts of America, and chair of the Better Business
Bureau of Central North Carolina. He was an active mem
ber of Christ United Methodist Church and the Piedmont
Investors Club.
He enjoyed playing tennis, walking on the beach at
Pawleys Island, S.C. where he and Tirzah lived immedi
ately after his retirement, playing poker with his friends,
and following the Tar Heels. He was widely considered to
grill the best hamburgers in the state, but passed without
giving up his culinary secrets.
The family held a private graveside service at Forest
Lawn Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 4.

Mary Francis Martin Brock
Mary Francis Martin Brock died in her home on Mon
day, Oct. 4,2021 surrounded by her family.
She was bom on Oct. 19,1937, in Courtney. The young
est of 8 children, she was the daughter of the late John
Frank and Gertrude Allgood Martin. Star basketball player
and valedictorian of her class, she graduated from Court
ney High School in 1955. After high school, she began her
career as a medical secretary. In March of 1957, a quick
visit to complete a simple tax return ended in a 64-year
marriage to John T. Brock. They were married on July 6,
1957.
She dedicated her life to her family and others. After
raising three children, she went back to school to pursue a
degree in nursing. She began her career as a nurse at Davie
County Hospital, and went on to become the home health
nurse for Davie County. She cared for and eased countless
lives until she retired.
She enjoyed beautifying her yard with flowers, solving
puzzles, and reading the mysteries of Agatha Christie. She
and her husband shared a love of travel and adventure, vis
iting 48 states and several countries across Europe and the
•Americas. She was a collector of many items, and particu
larly loved coffee mugs from her travels and dolls.
Creative and talented, she mastered everything she set
her mind to. Many of her friends and family are still kept
warm by quilts she made. Of all her traits, she was best
known for her kindness, generosity, and faith which she
expressed through her work at the church and her involve
ment in charitable organizations, including Prayers and
Squares Ministry and the Storehouse for Jesus.

nifer Brock McDonald, Robin Nanette Brock (Patrick
Place), and Martin Nathaniel Brock (Clarissa); 4 grand
children, Erik, Kristen, Alana, and Alan; 2 great-grandchil

Bobby Gray Bailey
Bobby Gray Bailey, 90, died at his home on Oct. 7,
2021.
He was bom on Nov. 2, 1930 to Claude Odell "Ned"
Bailey and Ilia Aaron Bailey in Davie County. He was a
graduate of Shady Grove High School. While in the fifth
grade, he met Maxine, who would eventually become his
bride. Following their marriage, he joined Mocks United
Methodist Church. A master carpenter, he retired fix)m
Floratine and later did contract work for Pine Hall Brick
Co. He and Maxine spent many hours working together on
woodworking projects. He would do the building, and she
would do the decorating. He loved caip fishing. It has been
said that he was one of the best around. When others saw
him approaching, they would pack up and leave because
he would fish all the carp out of the pond. He enjoyed
sports and was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and the NC
State Wol^ack.
He will be remembered as a quiet, humble man with a
good sense of humor.

Bailey.

her career as a nurse at Davie County Hospital, and went
on to become the home health nurse for Davie County. She
cared for and eased countless lives until she retired.
She enjoyed beautifying her yard with flowers, solving
puzzles, and reading the mysteries of Agatha Christie. She
and her husband, John, shared a love of uavel and adven
ture. They traveled extensively, visiting 48 states and sev
eral countries across Europe and the Americas. She was a
collector of many items, particularly coffee mugs from her
travels and dolls.
Creative and talented, she mastered everything she set
her mind to. Many of her friends and family are still kept
warm by the quilts she made. Of all her traits, she was
best known for her kindness, generosity, and faith which
she expressed through her work at the church and her in
volvement in charitable o^anizations, including Prayers
and Squares Ministry and the Storehouse for Jesus.
Survivors: her husband, John T. Brock; 3 children,
Jennifer Brock McDonald, Robin Nanette Brock (Patrick
Place), and Martin Nathaniel Brock (Clarissa); 4 grand
children, Erik. Kristen. Alana, and Alan; 2 great-grandchil
dren, Michael and Emmett; a sister, Betty Martin Barnes;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct.
10 at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Na
talie Gray and Rick Carter officiating. Friends came by
Lambert Funeral Home, Saturday, Oct. 9 to pay their re

James Walter *Jim' Harris
James Walter "Jim" Harris, 64, of Mocksville, died
on Oct. 9, 2021 from Novant Medical Center in Forsyth
County.
He was bom on March 15,1957 in Davie Coimty, son of
Mary Harris and the late Rayford Carl Harris. He was also
preceded in death by his uncles,
Olen Harris, Bert Harris, Mon
Harris and Roy Harris; and his
aunt. Vena Harris.
He graduated from Davie
County High School with the
class of 1975. He earned a bache-
lor's degree in business from East
Carolina University. He started
employment as a teenager at Da-
vie Auto Parts. He learned many
facets of the business starting as a j
counterman, the redistribution di-
vision of Davie Parts Warehouse,
and the purchasing department. He was promoted director
of sales and service of the paint, body, and equipment area
of the automotive market. He managed the sales and ser
vicing to approximately 150 independent jobber custom
ers as well as to the 24 company-owned stores in North
Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. After
the merger with O'Reilly Auto Parts in 2002, he served as
district manager where he managed the employees, sales
and operations at 14 company-owned locations. Years later
he returned as store manager in Mocksville due to a decline
in health. He held that position until his health would no
longer allow him to continue. He had a long and success
ful career in the auto parts industry, where he never met
a stranger and developed great relationships with suppli
ers, customers, and co-workes. He was well-known and
respected throughout the automotive industry.
He married Linda Lee Ellen (Yezarski) Harris in Pitt
County in 1983. They had three daughters. He was an ac
tive member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where
he was an usher. He loved his family and being "Papa." He
enjoyed fi shing and was a fan of Duke basketball, watching
or attending all of their games.

Harris of Mocksville; 3 daughters, Brooke Harris-Hardee
(Jeremy) of Calabash, Amber Harris (Chase Pender) of

Jeffries Ray "Jeff" Ayers, 76, was bom in Rockingham
County on June 5,1945 to the late Jeffries Lee Ayers and
late Stella Reed Ayers Livengood. His wife, Bonnie, and
daughter, Sarah, were with him when he died at the Kate
B. Reynolds Hospice House early Sunday morning, Oct.
3,2021.
Upon his father's death, he and his mother moved to

her, his art was abstract, as well as other painting mediums. '
His specialty was portraits. For years he showed locally in
Winston-Salem and Mocksville art galleries. As age crept
up on him, and his hand wasn't as steady, he switched to
photography. His keen eye caught the beauty of God's
work and wonder of nature.
He met Bonnie in 1974 while working at Southern Bell
in Salisbury. They were married for 42 years.

and their daughter, Sarah Ayers McFarland and son-in-law
Michael of Wake Forest; 3 granddaughters, who called him
Papa,Avery Elizabeth, Abigail Grace, and Ansley Isabella;

He was a kind and gentle person, with a heart of gold.
He liked everyone and cherished his family and friends. He
loved to feed them. He was a gourmet cook and was known
for throwing huge parties. He learned how to cut stones
and make precious jewelry from his friend of 50 years,
James (Jim) McBride of Mocksville. His other friends of
50 years, Pat and Corky Benson of Pfafftown were fellow
artists and uugbt him the love of kayaking, especially the
Nantahala River.
His first cousin and lifelong friend, Tom Jurgensen and
wife Connie of Mocksville, also survive. Joe Flowe, neigh
bor and best friend, was there day and night. He loved to
ride his motorcycle and leaves behind riding"friends Paul
"Max" Conklin, George "Gypsy" Hamilton, Jim Ever-
hardt. Bob Loftis and their spouses. He was preceded in

Road, died Sunday. Oct. 17,2021, at Somerset Court.
He was bom on June 17,1928 in Davidson County to the
late Melton Roscoe and Ethel Jarvis Eudy.
He was a Christian and a member of Edgewood Baptist
Church (formerly North Coolee-

Beverly Faye (Lear) Falin, 79, of Mocksville, died on
Oct. 7,2021 from her home in Davie County.
She was bom on April 5, 1942 in Berea, Ky., daughter
of the late Everett C. Lear and Anna Marie (Reed) Lear.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ann
Wilson.
She graduated from Berea High School with the class
of 1960 and Berea College with tiie class of 1964. She
became a teacher for the Livingston Kentucky School Sys
tem where she worked for four years. She married Carl
Edward Falin and remained together for 54 years. She was
a member of Fork Baptist Church.
Survivors: her husband, Carl Falin of Mocksville; and a
son, Shawn Falin (Kellee) of Ciemmons.
A visitationwas held on Monday, Oct. 11 at Fork Bap
tist Church from 2-3 p.m, followed by the funeral at 3,
officiated by Pastor Robert Garrett. She was buried in Fork
Baptist Church Cemetery.

Church and Bethany Baptist Church. Her passions were
arranging flowers and playing bridge.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband, Robert

water and Doris Edwards Yantis; and a nephew, Howard

Rebecca "Becky" Jane (Stafford) Burgess
Rebecca Jane (Stafford) Burgess, 69, of Cooleemee, NC, departed this world on
October 26, 2021 from Wake Forest Baptist Health in Forsyth County.
Becky, as she was so lovingly known as, was born on November 5, 1951 in Forsyth
County. She was the daughter of the late Woodrow Stafford and Edith Stafford. In addition
to her father, Becky was preceded in death by her husband, William Fred Burgess, and her
sisters, Shirley King and Nancy Carter.
In life, Becky graduated from Winston-Salem High School. Later, she began a career in
the textile industry as a seamstress for QST Industries, until she retired. Becky married the
love of her life, William Burgess, with their union, they had two sons.
Becky is survived by her two sons, Lonnie Burgess (Jamie) and Mark Burgess, both of
Advance, NC, a brother, David Stafford (Judy) of Lexington, SC, three sisters, Inez George
of Asheboro, Rachel Davis of Winston-Salem, and Carolyn Cross of Davidson Co., NC,
along with three grandchildren, Linda Schronce, Gillian Miller, and Kyra Owens, who will all
miss her dearly.

Allison Marie (Willis) Long, 56,of Mocksville, NC, was called to heaven on October 26,
2021 from her home in Davie County.
Allison was born on June 27, 1965 in Baltimore, MD. She was the daughter of Gloria
"Elaine" Simonetti and the late Alfred Emanuel Willis. In addition to her father, Allison was
preceded in death by her husband, Charles Long III.
In life Allison graduated from Amos P. Godby High School. Later, she married Charles
Long III and became a loving Mother of three and a "Super Grams" to manny.
Allison leaves behind to cherish her memory; a mother, Gloria "Elane" Simonetti, two
sons, Brandon Long and his partner Anna of Mocksville and Charles M. Long IV of
Charlotte, a daughter, Kathryn Duymovic of Charlotte, two brothers, David Willis of Texas
and Michael Willis of Maryland, two sisters, Marsha Bennett and Kathy Burton, both of
Maryland, and four grandchildren. Mason and Madison Duymovic, Evelyn Long and Charles
M. Long V, also, her loving life partner Justin Shepard, who will all miss her greatly.

high school sweetheart. Dub Fesperman, in 1953 and
moved to Durham where he attended Duke University.
The famUy moved several times due to his coaching and
football scouting career. Frequent moves presented new
cultures, homes, and churches. Priority was placed on
finding a church home so the children would be ^le to
continue in their understanding the value of knowing Jesus
Christ and the application of principles of faith in their
Uves. She believed that God guided the family to churches
where there was growth in Bible studies and which also
provided friendships lasting a lifetime. Throughout the
years, she was active in church as a deacon; teacher of
teens and older adults; serving on committees as well as
active in missions. It was her desire to leant the value of
God's spiritual ri ches that could never decay or be sto
len. The truths of forgiveness, mercy, love, righteousness
and prayer were essential in how she lived. She credits
her mother for setting an example as a Christian, listening
to her pray aloud each night while kneeling by a kitchen
chair. The Sunday school teachers in the early years at
Southside Baptist Church played an essential part in her
coming to know the Lord. She was baptized at age 11.
Love for helping others was demonstrated throughout her
life. Several people asked her why she tended to gravitate
toward people standing alone or those who seemed shy.
Since she was outgoing and loved people, it seemed natu
ral for her to talk to folks and even strangers. She conclud
ed that God led her to reach out to everyone - especially
the lonely, bereaved and those who God brought to her.
For a number of years, she was employed by W-S
Goodwill Industries as director of human resources, and
as a case manager for people with physical and intellectual
disadvantages. She felt working there was an extension of
her faith. While living in Moore County, she was president
of the Moore Republican Women. She also served on the
■ state level of the Republican party on the central and ex
ecutive committees. A highlight was being invited and at
tending the 54th Inauguration, of George Bush. She loved
china painting, as well as writing short stories and poetry.
She wrote about her growing up years, family life. Dub's
coaching/scouting career, their many moves and experi
ences during the years-many of which brought laughter
to the family.

Judith "Maxcine" Stevenson, 75, of Mocksville, died
on Oct. 13, 2021 from Wake Baptist Medical Center in
Forsyth County.
She was bom on Feb. 20, 1946 in Guilford County,
daughter of the late Atlas David Stevenson and Emma Lee
(Lindsay) Stevenson. She was also preceded in death by;
2 brothers, Allen and Glenn Stevenson: 3 sisters. Alease
Hayes, Mary Wagner, Joanne Stevenson; and 2 nieces, Na-
kiesha Johnson and Glenda Stevenson.
She attended schools in North Carolina, and earned her
GED at a community college. She worked was a nursing
assistant and a fi re sprinkler manufacturer. Shee attended
at Mt. Zion CME of Salisbury, and was a simple woman
who loved to read, especially her Bible, and solve cross
word and jigsaw puzzles.

Bobby Muse Thompson
Bobby Muse Thompson, 90, of Mocksville, died on
Oct. 10,2021 in his home m Davie County.
He was born on March 15,1931 in Cooleemee, son of
the late James M. Thompson and Sadie (Bivins) Thomp
son. He was also preceded in death by a brother and a sis
ter.
He graduated fnjm Cooleemee High School. He served
in the U.S. Air Force in supply services, refueling aircrafts
for 23 years, until he retired in 1974. He served in Korea
and \^etnam. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked
at Baker Furniture, Ingersoll Rand and The Bryan Center.
He also volimteered his time at the Zachary House Muse
um and helping churches with projects. In December of
1954, he married the love of his life, Laveme Aim (Nancy)
Thompson.They had two daughters. He led an active life
and was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Cooleemee,
American Legion, and the VFW. He enjoyed wood work
ing and spending time with his family.
Survivors: his wife, Laveme Thompson of Mocksville;
daughters, Debra Davis (Terry) of Mocksville, and Cheryl
Bisson (James) of Harper, Texas; 2 grandsons; a grand
daughter; and 2 great-granddaughters.

Charles Allen Walker Jr., 63, of Salisbury died on Oct.

He was bom on Oct. 27,1957 in Rowan County, son of

er Sr. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother,
Grace W. Hyman and his grandfather, Willie Hym^.
He graduated from the Salisbury school district. He be
gan a career in the cleaning business doing janitorial work
for 10 plus years until he retired. He attended White Rock
Church in Granite Quarry. Things he enjoyed were go
ing to movies, walking, listening to music, and especially
food.

becca Faggart of Mocksville; along with many other aunts
and uncles.

Mr. Robert Lee "Bob" Whitley, 83. of Wmston-Salem,
died on Saturday, Oct. 23,2021.
He was bom March 7,1938 in Forsyth County to Hoyt
Lee Whitley and Frankie Russell Whitley. He served in
the National Guard and was a former member of South
Fork Baptist Church. He later became a member of Yad-
kin Valley Baptist Church and retired from R J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co. He enjoyed spending time with his faimly,
playing golf, wood working and gardening.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his first wife,
Carole Finlayson WhiUey in 2002; and a sister, Colene
Ziglar in 2020.
Surviving: his wife of 16 years, Ann Hayes Whitley;

He was bom on June 21, 1959, in Rowan County to the late and Scott Wil

with North Carolina Finishing Company where he had worked in the office
as well as many other departments within the facility. He was an avid
sports fan and reader and enjoyed crosswords.

Mrs. Helen Lee "Peggy" Haneline Branham, 93, of
Mocksville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28,2021 at Kate
B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Wioston-Salem, after sev
eral years of declining health.
She was bom on April 26,1928 in Davie County to the
late Jake M. and Carrie Hepler Haneline.
Peggy was educated in the Mocksville schools and was a
lifelong resident of Mocksville

when she was able. She loved flowers and kept a beautiful

Her daughter. Alma, was her loving caregiver in her
later years. Peggy loved her little dog, Spirit, who was her
constant companion. Family meant everything to her. She
was a strong-willed lady who could do anything she deter
mined to accomplish.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by: her step-father, Frank Loman; her husband of 48 years,
Willie W. "Bill" Branham in 1992; 2 brothers, Jake M., Jr.
and Gene Haneline; 2 sisters, Mailene H. Maw and Barba
ra H. McDonald; and a dear friend, Robert Jones.

Lelia Neal Essie, 99, passed away peacefully in hw
Faraiington home on Oct. 21,2021 offer years of declin

Mrs. Essie was bom June 29,1922, in Caswell County,
N.C., on the tobacco farm where her family had lived for
generations. The fifth of seven children bora to Robert Lee
and Amy Garrett Neal, she was the last surviving sibling.

Road in their permanent home, "Mapleshades."
The Essies were pillars of the Pino/Farmington com
munity. While James took a public role in many civic or
ganizations, Lelia acted as hostess for numerous meetings
held in her home. She was active in the Home Demon
stration Club, theMocksviUe Woman's Club, and the First
Presbyterian Church of Mocksville.
When her children were out of infancy, Lelia resumed
the teaching career that she had set aside at the time of her
marriage. A pioneer in special education, she worked in
the Winston-Salem/Fors^ County system for 20 years.
She reserved her salaiy for the education of her four chil
dren.
Lelia was a pretty, petite redhead with a warm smile
and personality. A twinkle in her eye revealed a mischie
vous sense of humor. She seemed to have boundless en
ergy for everything (except perhaps house cleaning; she
much preferred yard work). Her children referred to her
as the "Energizer Bunny". Her life revolved around home
and family. She gardened, sewed, practiced handicrafts,
collected antiques, and made quilts for her children and
grandchildren. She and James loved nothing more than a
gathering of family and friends. An excellent cook, she of
ten said, "If you feed them, they will come." Following the
death of her mother in 1992, Lelia and James bought the
Neal family homeplace in Caswell County where, to the
delight of the extended family, they continued the tradi
tional gatherings at Easter and Christmas.
Beginning in 1983, Lelia and James spent their sum
mers house-sitting on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. They
enjoyed views of Occohannock Creek and Chesapeake
Bay, visited antique shops, learned about the history of the
area, and spent time with daughter Anne's family. They
also hosted visits to the Eastern Shore by the families of
daughter Mary Ellen and sons Chip and Neal and by nu
merous friends.
James died in 2010, two weeks short of the couple's
^ 68th wedding anniversary.

Jose Luis Ramirez, 53, of Mocksville, passed away
on Oct. 24, 2021 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-
Salem,NC.
Jose was bom on Sept. 2.1968 in municipality of Atoy-
ac de Alvarez, Guerrero, Mexico. He was the son of Ra
mon Ramirez and Maria Leonarda Cisneros. In 1992, Jose
united in marriage with Gladys Flores. With their union,
they had four children.
Jose leaves behind to cherish his memory: his parents,
Ramon Ramirez and Maria Leonarda Cisneros; his lov
ing wife, Gladys Flores; a son, Josiah Jose Ramirez: 3

Ruby "Joan" (Boger) Corum, 79, of Mocksville, NO, entered her heavenly
home on November 5, 2021.
Joan, as she was so lovingly known as, was born on November 26,
1941 in Davie Co., NC. She was the daughter of the late Baxter Abraham
Boger, Sr. and Ruby (Seamon) Boger.

Frances Ann Young Tyson
On Saturday, November 13, 2021 Frances Ann Young Tyson quietly left on her well-planned journey to her new
home in glory where she is already in fellowship with Jesus, the center of her Joy and all of her family and friends
who were awaiting her arrival. In sweet peace, she departed this life of 60 years at Rowan Medical Center,
Salisbury, North Carolina after several days of serious illness.
Born June 9,1960 in Davie County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Linda Pruitt Blackwell and the late
Francis McDonald Young. She graduated from Davie County High School, Mocksville, North Carolina. She
continued her studies at the Cabarrus Community College, earning an Associates Degree in
Nursing/Paramedics. Her last employment was with Autumn Care for many years.
Frances was a member of Fairfield Baptist Church, Mocksville, North Carolina where she attended faithfully. She
was the president of the church youth group. Offering to lend a hand to anyone, Frances could be found
volunteering: she served as a Cooleemee Volunteer Firefighter, she was a certified bail bondsman, certified tax
preparer, certified phlebotomist and a certified EMI. In her past-time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafting,
being the family chef and just enjoying time with her family. Frances is well known for her legendary "sweet tea."
She was preceded in death by both her fathers, Francis Young and Oscar Blackwell; son, TaJavis Little; grandson,
Jeremiah Johnson and a brother, Oscar Lynn Young .
Frances was loyal and devoted to her family. She is dearly beloved and mourned by her husband of 21 years,
Nathan Lee Tyson, Salisbury, North Carolina; her mother, Linda Pruitt Blackwell, Mocksville, North Carolina; sons:
Jonathan Johnson, Woodleaf, North Carolina, Darren Lynn Johnson of the home and step son, Daniel Tyson,
Salisbury, North Carolina; a daughter, Latisha N. Young, Yadkinville, North Carolina and stepdaughters, Tina
Tucker. Charlotte, North Carolina and Erica (Dejuan) Pruitt, Salisbury, North Carolina; 20 grandchildren of which

John Andrew Brown
John Andrew Brown, 62, of Mocksville, NC departed this world on November 14, 2021 from his
home in Davie County.
John was born on January 24, 1959 in Forsyth County, NC. He was the son of the late Janice
(Whitlock) Edwards. In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Anne
Gartner.
In life, John graduated from Parkland High School then went on to earn an Associate's Degree from
Caldwell Community College. John honored our country and served in the United States Army. He
later began a career as a Biomed Technician for Trimedix at Novant Health. He married the love of
his life, Debra Cecile (Joiner) Brown and with their union had one son. In his free time, John liked to
golf, surf fish, and enjoyed hanging out with his faithful companion, Smokey Bear the dog.
John leaves behind to cherish his memory; his loving wife of 36 years, Debra Cecil Brown of the
Farmington Community, a son, Christopher C. Brown (Olivia) of Sheffield, and a brother, Robert
Brown of Mocksville, who will all miss him dearly.

ADVANCE—Mrs. Lucille Christina Lotterer Jones, 96, of Daye Lane,
passed away Monday, November 15, 2021 at her home.
She was bom on September 2, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late
George Eugene and Agnes Gertmde Miller Lotterer.
Mrs. Jones was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons
and enjoyed birds, nature, and being surrounded by her family. She
watched "The Price is Right" daily and her painting show on Friday. Mrs.
Jones will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister,
and friend to many.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three siblings.
Survivors include her eight children, Ronald Jones, Donald Jones, Glenn

Marcus Javan Green answered God's call and on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 left his earthly home and
entered into eternal rest. We, his family and friends, give thanks to the Almighty for his grace and mercy; we give
thanksgiving for the time we were able to share his life.
Born May 5,1958 in Forsyth County, North Carolina, Marcus was the son of the late Eddie and Gloria Nivens
Green. He received his formal education in the Forsyth County public schools and graduated from RJ Reynolds
High School, Class of 1976. He entered the workforce at an early age, working at the Reynolds Tobacco Plant,
Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Never idle, Marcus was also known as "the chef working in various restaurants.
He was added to Redland Church of Christ on November 18,1990.
Before losing his sight, he loved watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed playing pool, playing
golf, fishing and he had a passion for cars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bois Green and Vincent Green.
Marcus and Alice Blackwell Green were joined in Holy Matrimony on October 8,1983 and were united in marriage
for 38 years. They were loving and devoted parents to April, Brittany and Shymeka.
Those left to cherish a legacy of love and fond memories are his wife, Alice Blackwell Green, Advance, North
Carolina; three daughters: April Green, Brittany Green and Shymeka Green, all of Advance, North Carolina; three

Sharon Ann Wilmuth Hale
Mrs. Sharon Ann Wilmurth Hale, age 78 of Advance answered Jesus' call and passed away from life into
heaven on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at her home. Sharon brought a light and love for life from the
first moment she was born on June 27,1943 in San Bernardino, CA. to the late James Henry Wilmurth
and Ruth Strieker Wilmurth. She is preceded in death by one brother, James "Jimmy" Wilmurth and two
sisters, Ruth Breuer and Norma Mace. Surviving are her husband, Lewis D. Hale, Jr. one son. Brock
Saladin (Sharon) of Lexington, KY; one daughter, Julie Ann Hale of Charlotte, NO; granddaughters
Brittany LeVeque (Pat), Ragan Saladin, Madison Saladin; great granddaughter Isabella LeVeque; and
sister Judy Ash (Richard). Sharon was faithful in her walk with Jesus and beloved by all who knew her.
She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and cherished every moment spent doing His
work. While her family grieves her loss, they want to remember Sharon in a way that honors her loving

Stokes Henry Alridge Jr.
Mr. Stokes Henry Alridge Jr., 85, of Winston-Salem.
passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 10,2021, at
Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Stokes was bom Sept. 22,1936 to Stokes Henry Alridge
Sr. and Lucille Click Alridge. He was a 1955 graduate of
Glenn High School where he played his favorite sport,
Basketball. He worked as a Police Officer for the Win-
ston-Salem Police Department for 30 plus years where he
retired as Sergeant. He also served in the Marine reserves.
He married Mildred "Bonnie" Atwood on May 25th, 1957.
They raised 2 children together, daughter Donna and son
Kent. Stokes was a beloved husband, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather, and friend. He had a passion for helping
others, mowing lawns for neighbors for many years. In his
free time. Stokes enjoyed hunting and sports of all types,
especially coaching Little League at South-west. Stokes
lived his life for his loved ones, never letting anyone for
get he was thinking about them and that he wanted them
to "Be Careful" always. "To know him was to love him."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his beloved wife of 45 years who he would call the best of
the best, Bonnie Alridge, and his son, Kent Alridge.
Stokes is survived by: his daughter, Donna Maitz and
husband John; granddaughters, Salina Alridge-Everhart
and husband Robbie, Michelle Parsons and husband Jeff,
Laura Hockley and husband Sam, and Rachel Hayes and
husband Bradley; great-grandchildren, Braxton Everhart,
Eli Everhart, and Avery Parsons; and sister, Pat Wood.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, Nov. 14,2021, at
2 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment
will follow the service at Oak Grove United Methodist
Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Satur
day, Nov. 13.2021, from 5-7 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas
Creek Chapel. Masks will required at both the visitation
and the service.

Bobby E. Edwards, 89, of Myrtle Beach, SC died unex
pectedly Sunday, Nov. 7,2021 at McLeod Health Seacoast
Hospital in Little River, S.C.
Bobby was bom on Jan. 17,1932 in Davie County. He
graduated from Cooleemee High School and joined the
Navy in June of 1951. He received the good conduct med
al, Korean Medal, United Nations Medal and the Nation
al Defense Medal. He graduated from Appalachian State
with a Master's Degree in Education. He was in Who's
Who in America while in college. He was a high school
teacher in Monroe NC and retired in 1993 to North Myrtle
Beach.
He was proceeded in death by his mother Edna Gat-
ton Edwards, father Johnnie Odell Edwards, sisters Helen
Hege and Dorothy Adkins; brothers Lester R. Edwards
and Chester G.Edwards. •
He is survived by: his sister, Bren Gibson; and nieces,
nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Lucille Nora Day Furches, 98, of Mocksvilie, died
Sunday, Nov. 14,2021, at Somerset Court.
She was bom April 21,1923 in Surry County to the late

homemaker who loved doing

spoil her grandchildren with coffee, homemade popsicles,
buttermilk pancakes, and fried chicken.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by: her stepmother, Mary Belle Day; husbands, Clayton
Odell Lovette in 1959, and James Fred Furches in 1999;
stepdaughter, Carolyn Murray; sisters, Mary Banner and
Betty Jo Haynes; a brother. Jack P. Day; and a grand
daughter, Becky Turner.
Survivors: daughters, Terrie Cartrette (Charles) of Myr
tle Beach, Nora Naylor (Ralph), and Christina Hurt (Kit),
all of Mocksvilie; grandchildren, Craig Baucom, Megan
Risko, Betsy Naylor, Clay Naylor, Daniel Hurt, Christo
pher Hurt, Landon Hurt, Abbe Hurt, Vicky Rhinehardt,
Susan Jones, Lynda Betabdishoo, David Murray, and Mo-
leta Murray; and numerous great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Sat
urday, Nov. 20 at Lambert Funeral Home Chapel with her
great-nephew, the Rev. Ken Furches, officiating. Interment

His parishioner would not let
him leave until she was able to introduce him to her kind
and caring nurse, Juanita Inez Reeves. The two wed at St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church in Wilmington on Jan. 21,
1962. The couple then accepted a call to First Presbyterian
Church of Matthews. While in Matthews, the couple ex
panded their family by two with the birth of their daugh
ters, Lynne and Karen.
Leiand felt called to serve his country and joined the
U.S. Army as a chaplain in 1966. The family moved to
Fort Bragg, where he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne
Division, and subsequently deployed to Vietnam in 1967.
Leiand received a Bronze Star among other honors for his

After returning from Vietnam, the family moved to Fort
Benning, Ga. Leiand left active duty at the end of 1969,
after accepting the call to serve as minister of First Pres
byterian Church in Mocksville. He retired from the U.S.
Army Reserve as a Colonel in 1993. Leiand counts among
his most meaningful experiences as a minister speaking
at the dedication of the Veteran's Memorial Monument in
Mocksville.
For over 27 years, Leiand and Juanita faithfully served
the congregation of First Presbyterian until his retirement
in 1997. In describing Mocksville, Leiand said it was "just
a good community to live in - with good people." He en
joyed working with the church's youth group and joining
with other local churches for special community services.
In addition to ministering to his congregation, Leiand was
known throughout Davie County for his good works. He
especially enjoyed serving as chaplain for the Davie High
School football team and volunteering with Habitat for
Humanity. Leiand was named "Man of the Year" by the
Civitan Club. He especially hoped to improve race rela
tions "by trying to let all people know that we arc fellow
human teings created by God." In June 2000,Leiand was
honored with the title of Pastor Emeritus of First Presby
terian Church of Mocksville. The couple moved to the
Homestead Hills community in Winston-Salem, in 2015,
where they joined Parkway Presbyterian Church.
In his younger years, Leiand loved running and hiking
on the Appalachian Trail. He was a reader of theology and
military history. Leiand enjoyed fishing, working in the
yard, chocolate chip ice cream and Lexington BBQ. Af
ter his retirement, he and Juanita traveled around the U.S.
with close friends, and celebrated time with family, most
especially the "Grands."
Leiand was a beloved husband, father and "Papa," and a
true friend to many. Above all, he was loved by, and loved,
God. Even though Leiand will be greatly missed by his
family and friends, we rejoice that he has now found ever
lasting life with his Heavenly Father.
He is siiivivcd by: his loving wife of 59 years, Juan
ita; 2 daughters, Joy Lynne Richardson O'Brien (Mark)
of Marietta, Ga., and the Rev. Karen Richardson Dunn of
Asheville; 5 grandchildren, Kristen Alexandra O'Brien,
Matthew Calhoun O'Brien, Grace Autry O'Brien, Dylan
Blue Dunn, and Roan Dunn;' son-in-law, Ethan Dunn;
sister-in-law, Arlene Richardson: brother-in-law, Cecil
Reeves; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by:
his sisters, Floyd, Lucille, Eva, and Linda; older brothers,
Oscar, William, and Gordon; and infant granddaughter,
Clare Joy O'Brien.

Mr. Larry Ray Meadows, age 79 of Advance, passed away Friday, November 19, 2021 at the Kate B.
Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 9,1941 at home in High Point NC. He spent his adult
life working for several trucking companies, first as a driver, then as a dock worker. He retired from
Roadway Trucking in 1998. Larry enjoyed camping, traveling, and watching TV such as Boxing, Baseball,

Arthur Frank Inman
Arthur Frank Inman passed away peacefully following a long Illness on Wednesday November 24,
2021. For the past two years he and his wife Betty had made their home at Bermuda Village
Retirement Community, Bermuda Run, North Carolina, to be near their daughter. Mr. Inman was
born on February 15,1936 in Trenton, New Jersey to Arthur Letts Inman and Olive Moore Inman.
On June 14,1958 he married his friend and co-worker, Betty Lee Bowman, at the Congress
Heights Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Mr. Inman was preceded in death by his father, mother
and sister Margaret Ella Inman. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Betty, daughter Margaret
Reavis (Charles); granddaughter Katherine (Brandon) and grandchildren Emery and Grady
Mygrant of Brownsburg, Indiana; granddaughter Sarah Reavis (Garrett) of Wilmington, North
Carolina. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Navy where he was honored to be a Plank Owner,
member of the first crew to commission the naval aircraft carrier USS Forrestall (CV-59). He
served in the Special Weapons Unit. His next service assignment took him to the Atomic Energy
Commission, Washington, DC where he served as aide to General Alfred D. Starbird, Director of
Military Applications. He remained in that position until completing his full 7-year active military
duty. Following his military service, he took advantage of the Gl Bill studying at the International
Institute of Architecture and Interior Design in Washington, DC. After completing a 2-year
program, he joined the visual merchandising design team at the Hecht Company in Washington
DC. His work in major displays included animated Christmas scenes, holiday events and Disney
movie animations. He remembered vividly and sadly setting up the memorial window directly
after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. In 1965 Mr. Inman
accepted a position with Montgomery Ward and Co., he relocated his family to Fredericksburg, VA
where he was manager of display and design while travelling to surrounding states setting up new
stores in VA, MD, WV, and PA. Desiring to remain in the Fredericksburg area, he went to work at
the Marine Corps Exchange at Quantico, VA where he continued as manager until his retirement
in 1995. He and his wife retired to Wytheville, VA. As active members, the Wytheville Presbyterian
Church became the center of his spiritual and social life. He garnered great joy from his service
and fellowship there. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 1 p.m. at

father. Hal was bom to share
croppers on a farm outside of Bristol, Tenn. on Nov. 9,
1935. Despite humble beginnings, his childhood memories
were those of family love, mischief, and laughter. Aftergraduating high school, he worked in automotive factories
in Detroit and played for a short while with the Chicago
White Sox to pay for college. His baseball career was cut
short when he was selected to be drafted into the Army but
chose to join the Marine Corps instead.
He entered the Marine Corps in 1957 to become a Na
val Aviator. He served in the Dominican Republic, the Cu
ban Missile Crisis, Viemam, Laos, and Cambodia, fl ying
with the Marines and with Air America. Hal fl ew countless
combat missions in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft, in
cluding the A-4 Skyhawk,AH-l Cobra,UH-34D Seahorse,
UH-I Huey, and CH-46 Sea Knight. After returning from
Southeast Asia, he finished his college degree and returned
to the fleet to transition to the AV-8A Harrier and later
r served as Commanding Officer of VMAT-203, the HamerI training squadron, at Cherry Point MCAS. After the grad-
^ uating from the USMC Command and Staff College, the
Naval War College, and serving another tour overseas, he
■i spent bis remaining military career dedicated to planningr and integrating the next generation Harriers and close air
~ support capabilities at Headquarters Marine Corps, Wash-^ ington, D.C. and as the Wing G-3, Head of Operations, at
j the 2nd Marine Air Wing, Cherry Point MCAS.
He received his Bachelor of Arts from Auburn Univer-c sity in 1972. For his sdrvice to our country, he was awarded1 the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, two Distinguished' Flying Crosses, two Bronze Stars with Valor, 48 Air Med-Q als. Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Com-2 mendation Medal with Valor. Hal retired from military
. service in 1984 and became a trusted fi nancial planner
2 who enjoyed helping young Marines and their families.

odist Church in Morehead City, NC where he sang in the
choir and enjoyed the fellowship of his Men's Bible Studyevery Tuesday morning at 5. Hal devoted an abundance
of time to serving his community in leadership roles with
his church, the Newport Rotary Club, and the NewportPig Cookin' Contest. Most of all, he loved spending time
with his grandchildren at Gumpond, the family farm. Hetaught them the virtues of generosity and silliness and how
to drive his old "Bubba" truck, shoot a shotgun, and slow
cook ri bs.

Ms. Florence B. Cody, 86, of Bluffton and mother of
Jennifer Cody-Murphy, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021,
at her residence.

on Nov. 15, 1934 with an infectious laugh and smile to

Bronx.
As a single parent of one daughter, Jennifer Cody Mur
phy, Florence strategically raised Jennifer much the same
as Florence lived her life - via the pursuit of becom
ing the best version of oneself through tireless effort, a
commitment to education, faith, and an understanding of
where one fit into history.
Focused and independent, Florence lived most of her
adult life in New York in both the Bronx and Yonkers. For
over 40 years, Florence was a steadfast blood bank techni
cian at one of the finest hospitals in the country. Mount
Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Despite working the mid
night shift for many of those years, Rorence moonlighted
at several other hospitals across New York in order to pro
vide for and support her daughter and her mother. Rorence
understood the value of a dollar, so much so that she raised
an accountant, but she was always more than willing to
share in her excess to support not only her daughter and
grandchildren, but many in her family who needed a help
ing hand.
Florence, who committed her life to serve The Sav
ior. Jesus Christ, was an active member of Grace Baptist
Church, in Mount Vemon, N.Y.
Rorence spent her life caring for many but she doted
on her grandchildren Nicholas, Jaunell, and Niles Murphy.
Even after a long night of work, she was patient and nev
er too tired or busy to share her imminent wisdom, time,
and joy with her grandchildren, whether she was teaching
them the simple things in life, like gardening, or hopping
on the train to catch the Bronx Bombers.
Rorence is survived by: her daughter; grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, Isabel and Xander Murphy; and a
host of nieces and nephews.
Rorence's family will forever remember with great
pride her snength, determination, wisdom, high expecta
tions, generosity, and loving care. Although she is with the
Lord whom she served faithfully, the seeds she has sown
continue to grow and be fruitful, to the glory of God. Flor
ence's family feels extraordinarily blessed to be kin of
i Rorence B. Cody, remain thankful for her, and are Joyful
^ that she is present with the Lord. We look forward to Join-

In life. Bill attended Smith Grove School. He later be
gan a career with Taylor Brothers as plant supervisor where
he worked for 31 years before retiring. He was a member
of Farmington Masonic Lodge. In his free time Bill en
joyed hunting, saltwater fishing, and skeet shooting.

EUen Katherine Bragg Rawlings
Ellen Katherine Bragg Rawlings, 80, suddenly passed
away at her home on Oct. 8,2021 in Wellington, Fla.
Ellen was bom in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Oct. 4, 1941 to
Joseph and Katherine Bragg. She grew up in Brookville,
Long Island on her father's, horse farm, Brookville Sta
bles. When she was 13 years old, her father passed away
and her family moved to Freepoit, Long Island, N.Y. She
graduated from Freeport High-School.
Ellen then went to work for Suffolk County Social Ser
vices on Long Island where she worked until 1992. She
also ran the 4-H program in Suffolk County, Long Island,
N.Y. for many years.
In 1992, Ellen, along with her husband, Harry, bought
a 65-acre farm on Cana Road in Mocksville, N.C. She
opened a retirement home for horses on their farm which
was named Greenbelt Farms. She, also, worked part-time
in the Tack Shop at Thoroughbred Training Center just up
the road from their farm and assisted at the horse shows
held at that facility. Ellen and her husband lived in Farm-
ingtonfor? 1/2 years. They, then, relocated to Wellington,
Fla. to be closer to family.
Ellen is survived by: her husband of 40 years; 3 chil
dren, Joseph Hayden (Sue) of Lake Grove, N.Y., Linda
Smith (Rich) of Wellington Fla., and Keith Bemhardt
(Elizabeth) of Boston, Mass.; 5 grandchildren; and 2
great-grandchildren.
Ellen will be coming home to Mocksville. There will

Bill was proud to have served his country in the Marine
Corp during the Korean War. He retired from the IRS as a
Revenue Officer. Bill was never a big talker, a man of few
words, but he thoroughly enjoyed being a husband, father,
gramps and Grandpa Smith and loved to laugh at the antics
and sometimes sUIy actions and words of his grandchil
dren and especially of his great-grandchildren. He loved
and his love was returned. He will be missed but we have
the assurance of seeing him again and we await that time.
There was a graveside service officiated by Pastor Kris
Romito,his grandson, at noon on Nov. 30,2021 at Histor
ic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh N.C. There will be no
formal visitation.

Mrs. Ashlee Dawn Taber Smith, 36, of Creekwood
Drive, Advance, passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 at
Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was bora on July 25,1985, in DeKalb 111. to Rick Eu- ^

movies, shopping, and sending
times with her family, especial-

Elsie Smith Black
Mrs. Elsie Smith Black. 97. passed away peacefully in
her home Friday, Dec. 3, 2021 surrounded by her loved
ones.
Elsie was bom in Davie County on Feb. 3,1924 to Ottis
H. and Lola H. Smith. She was the third of nine children.
She married Bennett Black on
Dec. 7,1946.They lived in Lew-
isville.NC for over 60 years. Km

out her life. She was an accom- | 5
plished seamstress and learned ..
to sew at an early age, making
clothes for her younger siblings
and their dolls. She was an ex-
cellent student having graduated 1^^'
valedictorian of her high school, 5^'^
only she could wear white.
After graduation, Elsie 'jagg." -'-Ik
worked as a seamstress for Hanes .v..a
Hosiery, where she met her future
husband, Bennett Black. She took a break from working
outside the home while raising their four young children.
Elsie was a dedicated wife, loving mother and excellent
homeraaker. Elsie's family and friends enjoyed many de
licious meals using fresh vegetables from Bennett's boun
tiful garden. An exceptional baker, she always had fresh
desserts on hand, a treat for any guest. Her expertise with
sewing, quilting, cooking, and gardening made her a valu
able member of the Home and Garden club. She became
well known for her exceptional skills and readily shared
her knowledge and talents with others.
When the last child started school. Elsie eased back into
the work force as a seamstress at Lewisville Dry Cleaners,
worked at South Fork Cleaners where she was promoted to
'jack of all trades' then u-ansferred to Clemmon's Cleaners
as plant manager. Ready to shift gears and focus on her
love for sewing, Elsie signed on as a sales clerk at Singer
Sewing Co., where she also taught sewing classes. After
retiring from Singer, she worked as a pharmacy tech at
Bobbits pharmacy and part time sales clerk at Lewisville
Furniture. In addition to these jobs, Elsie regularly took in
alterations and other sewing projects, always in high de
mand as she was the best at her trade. Elsie was no stranger
to hard work, but she still found time for the people and
things she loved.
Elsie loved being Mawmaw to her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. She gladly ran a "daycare center"
keeping her grandchildren while her own children were at
work. She loved each one dearly and enjoyed their visits
through the years. She always had a smile and a laugh. She
poured out her love and her life on her family. She loved
to just visit and talk, not only with her family but with her
friends as well. Her door was always open and her home a
welcome haven for many.
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have re
ceived to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace
in it's various forms." 1 Peter 4:10 NIV.
This was Elsie's life. Above all of her worldly ac-
—- complishments, of which she has many, she served Jesus
^ Christ and she served her family and the others around her.
^ She was a faithful member of Lewisville Baptist Church,
^ teaching Sunday School for many years, touching others
— through her many roles and giving generously,

Elsie lived a long and fruitful life, each day a gift from
above; so well loved by those who know her, we are bless

was held at Lewisville Baptist Church on Tuesday, Dec.
7, 2021. The family received visitors at 10 a.m. with the
funeral service to follow at 11. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Pastor Philip Barnes and the Rev. Greg Freeman
officiated.

Mrs. Bertha Louise Smith Blackwelder, 96, of Mocks-
ville.died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 5,2021.
She was bom Sept. 20,1925 in the Smith Grove Com
munity of Davie County to the late Joel Marvin and Bertha
Viola Bowden Smith. Louise was a member of Chestnut
Grove United Methodist Church.
She graduated from MocksvilleHigh School in 1944, and married W ^

even taught decorative painting for many years at both
the Davie County and Yadkin County Senior Centers. In
her more than 60 years as a member at Chesmut Grove
UMC, she was a Sunday School teacher, Youth leader, and
Vacation Bible School volunteer. She especially enjoyed
being a pan of the United Methodist Women's Chicken
Pie Ministry. "Granny B," as she was so affectionately
referred, was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister,
grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt.

by: her husband of 43 years. Bud Blackwelder; a son, Rog
er Wayne Blackwelder; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Hendrix
Blackwelder; and her 9 siblings and their spouses, Mar-

Dec. 8,2021, at Lambert Funeral Home Chapel with Pas
tor Bob Briggs and the Rev. Chip Webb officiating. Inter
ment will follow in the Chestnut Grove UMC Cemetery.

Mr. Allen Ray Clontz, 67, of Williams Road, Mocks

He was bom on March 18,1954 in Rowan County to

markets and loved his "treasures".

m loved horses as long as he was

and never met a stranger. He also
loved tinkering with his hands and
was always willing to help anyone at any time.
Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Delores Link
Clontz; 2 sons, Dustin Clontz (Glna) of Yadkinville and
William Clontz of Mocksville; 3 grandchildren, Draco
Clontz, Garrett Blevins and Corey Brill; 2 great-grand

Austin Cooper Horn
Austin Cooper Horn of Boca Raton, Fla, died on Nov.
17,2021.
With a heavy heart we share the sad n^ws of Austin's
sudden passing. He was bom May 12,1998 in Mocksville,
but lived for many years in Concord. Austin graduated
from Cox Mill High School and attended UNCC.
Austin liked to live life big. He loved traveling, golf,
all types of surfing, snow skiing, cars, and doing things
with the people he loved. Austin's soul was caring and his
love for his brother and sister was earnest. He stuck up for
what he believed, with strong opinions. Austin had a pas
sion and desire for learning on a multitude of topics and
interest. By living life on his terms, he showed us how to
be bold and compassionate.
He was taken from us way too early, and we will for
ever be saddened, but the memories he left behind for us
will last us a lifetime. Austin is now being held firmly in
the loving arms of his Lord as he waits for his family and
friends to see him once again.
. He is predeceased by his grandmother, Dorothy Morris
Horn.
Survivors: his mother, April Peterson (Jim); his father,
Henry Horn (Lisa); siblings, Michael and CaitUn; steps-

first 21 years of her life in Ath
ens, W.Va. where her dad was a
coach and athletic director at Concord College. She grad
uated from Athens High School in 1966, attended Con
cord for one year, and graduated from Radford College in
Radford, Va. in 1970 with a degree in mathematics. She
was a 1983 graduate of the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro with a Master's in Education. She was united
in marriage to Steve on Sept. 4, 1970 and spent the next
several years in and around bases in Florida, Texas, and
Puerto Rico while her husband served in the Navy. Janie
was a woman of many talents. After realizing a gift for
counseling others, Janie obtained a degree in counseling
and initially put that to good use opening the Micah Coun
seling Center in Mocksville in 1984. In 1987 she felt lead
to accept a position as an elementary guidance counselor
in the Davie County NC school system and enjoyed many
years at Mocksville Middle and Mocksville Elementary
schools. In 1993 she answered the call to serve on the staff
of Macedonia Moravian Church in Advance and later at
Comerstone Christian Church, where she served in a va
riety of roles, among others Director of Christian Educa
tion and Director of Family Life Minisuy. In 1996 she was
elected to and served a six year term on the Davie County
School Board. Janie touched countless lives as a mentor
mom with Mother's of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS) and Sun
day school teacher at Macedonia, Comerstone, and Blaise
Baptist Church. In 2011 she accepted a position as Execu
tive Director of the Davie Pregnancy Care Center, minis
tering to young and expectant mothers, a ministry she truly
loved. Janie also found time to volunteer for several years
with Forgiven Ministry, an outreach to prisons and fami
lies of prisoners. She also traveled on several mission trips
to Jamaica. Mexico, and London, England. As the disease
which eventually took Janie's life was in its early stages,
she would quite often remark. "I'm trusting Jesus with all
this." This epitomized Janie's life and is how she wanted
to be remembered: as one who trusted in her Lord and who
strived to share that love with others.
The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation
for all the Memory Care staff at Eagle Crest South in La
Crosse for the excellent care they gave to Janie.

Gwendolyn Carol Smith
Gwendolyn Carol Smith, 77, of Mocksville, NO departed this world on December 12, 2021 from
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Forsyth County.
Gwyn, as she was so lovingly known as, was born on May 24, 1944 in Davie County. She was the
daughter of the late Daniel Chal Smith and Nell Glee (Frye) Smith.
In life, Gwyn graduated from Davie County schools. She worked for Hayward Manufacturing as a
machine operator until she retired. Gwyn was a God-fearing woman and a member of Smith Grove
United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and worked in the nursery. In her spare time,
Gwyn enjoyed baking and cooking, taking pictures, and sewing. Gwyn was creative and could do
anything, she was a regular "jack of all trades".
Gwyn is survived by her sister, Ann Smith of Mocksville, and her very special loved ones, Sammy
and Krista Brown, Matthew, Allyson, Emilee, and Kami Hillard, Doug and Chris Jacobs, Paxton and
Madeline Brown, and Jackson and Autumn Morton, who will all miss her very much.
A visitation for Gwyn will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at
Davie Funeral Service of Mocksville. On Friday, December 17, 2021 at 11:00 am a graveside service
will be held at Smith Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pastor Darren Crotts will officiate the
service.

Lest we forget, our beloved Dayon Tyree Jordan was born September 8,1990 in Plainfield,
New Jersey and transitioned on Monday, December 13, 2021. He was the son of Brenda
Casiano and Dalton Jordan. We, his family and friends, will remember Dayon fondly. We
give thanks to God for allowing us to share his life.
Dayon was educated in the Forsyth County public schools system. For many years he was
employed with Logan's Restaurant where he was one of the head chefs. Dayon was a
former member of Refugee Community Church, Cooleemee, North Carolina. He enjoyed
cooking and spending time with his family. He was fun-loving and always willing to lend a
helping hand.
A loving family who will forever treasure Dayon's memory are his parents, Brenda Casiano
of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Dalton Jordan, Plainfield, New Jersey; three
brothers: Jason Andrews of Cleveland, Ohio, Karl Hatten of N. Plainfield, New Jersey and

Ellis Eidson. Mr. Eidson served in the US Army and had retired after 30 years of service as a security

Woodrow Wilson Carruthers, Jr., 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 17,
2021. He was born September 21,1938 in Greensboro, North Carolina to the late Ann Eason
Scruggs and Woodrow Wilson Carruthers, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 39 years. Jewel, his four
children, Balne Carruthers (Amy), Scott Carruthers (Melony), Paige Armstrong (Danny), Julie
Winchester (Roy), his stepchildren, Jennifer Hansell, Jay Human (Crystyl), Ashley Martin, his sister,
Sandra Browning (Herman), his brother, Mike Carruthers (Dottie), and twelve grandchildren. His
love and talent for baseball led him from being a star Little League pitcher, on to high school, NC
State, semi-pro bail in South Dakota and signed with the Baltimore Orioles. He started his own
company. Jewel Industries, inc., in 1988. He dedicated his business to the Lord and was blessed
with success for 31 years. In addition to love for his family, he was a gifted woodworker, collector
and repairer of clocks and watches. He was a man of honesty and integrity and a good friend once
put it this way: "When Wilson and I became friends, just being around him made me a better
person." The family would like to thank the Davie County Trellis Hospice Team and personal
caregivers, Stella and Faith, for their loving care of Wilson during the past few weeks. A
celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Hayworth-Miller
Kinderton Chapel, 108 E. Kinderton Way, Advance, NC 27006. The family will receive friends from

Roy Steven Adams
Mr. Roy Steven Adams, age 70 of Advance, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021. He was born
December 8, 1951 in Wilkes County to the late Roy Calvin Adams and Marlon Stone Adams. Mr. Adams
graduated from Appalachian State University with degrees In Biology and Geology, as well as completing
military training programs at the Army command Staff College. Mr. Adams was a Vietnam Veteran and
retired as a Colonel from the US Army after 33 years of service In the US Navy and Army. After retiring,
Mr. Adams ran the E Link Program at Davidson County Community College for 10 years. Mr. Adams was
an Eagle Scout and member of Advance Masonic Lodge, York Rite Bodies of North Carolina, Veteran of
Foreign Wars, American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Association. He Is survived by his wife of 44
years, Beverly H. Adams of the home; two sons, Zachary Adams and Aaron Adams both of Advance and

could restore or repurpose.

excellent care during the past seven years, to Dr. Amin
and Tiffany Ingold PA-C of Piedmont Family Medicine
for ministering to his medical needs, to the Pruitt Health
Hopsice of Wilkes. who were caring, helpful, and effec
tive in William's care from February of this year until his
transition, and to family and friends for their continued

by: her first husband, Hugh Foster Wagner; her second
husband, Phillip Ralph Hall; an infant daughter, Brenda
Darlene Wagner; a sister, Ruth Booe; and a brother, Billy
Lee Hellard.
Survivors include: 2 children, Judy Becker (Sonny) of
Mocksville and Robert Wagner (Marilyn) of Sherrills Ford;5 grandchildren, Brian Becker (Jennifer), Amy Blackwell
(Bobby), Sally Allen (Luke), Franklin Wagner (Cretia)

We celebrate the life of Edna Jean White Hairston, who went home to be with Our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, Thursday, December 23, 2021. She was born in Iredell County, North Carolina on April
12,1938 and was the daughter of the late Willie and Velma Dalton White. We not only celebrate her
life, but we give thanks for the many years we shared the life of a woman of faith who made our lives
fuller and brighter by her generosity and kindness.
She was a member of New Jerusalem Apostolic Church.
She has reunited with her parents; her husband, David Hairston; three children: Barry Hairston,
Gilbert White and Marcus Hairston; two grandchildren, Ashely Roseboro and Patrice Hairston; two
great-grandchildren, Kevin Allen and Ja'Zir Peace and her siblings: Bob White, Charles White, Jim
White, Henry White and Geraldine Dalton in a place where every day is like Sunday and all is
tranquil.
Edna is survived by her two sons, Kevin (Gail) White and Craig Hairston; two sisters, Margaret
(Calvin) Ijames and Carolyn Hairston; a brother, Gary White; 10 grandchildren, 25 great
grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

He was born July 16, 1965, in Elyria, OH, to Gerald Wilbur Krueger and the late Barbara
Jean McGlockin Krueger. Mr. Krueger was the veteran of the U.S. Army and had been
employed by Lydall Thermal in Yadkinville.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Krueger; and a
sister, Lisa Krueger Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Renee Cline Krueger; his father; stepdaughters,
Reanna Poplin and Nichole Sizemore; sisters, Lori Krueger Lane, Kimberly Krueger Herbst,

Timothy Brandon Seamon, 39, of Mocksville, NC, departed this world on December 26, 2021, from
Rowan Hospital in Rowan County.
Brandon, as he was so lovingly known as, was born on October 14, 1982, in Rowan County. He
was the son of Cletus Daniel Seamon and Susan Gail (Rummage) Seamon. Brandon was preceded
in death by his grandparents.
In life, Brandon attended school at Davie High School. He later went on to work in metal sales.
Brandon is survived by his parents, Cletus and Susan Seamon of Mocksville, a brother, Danny

(Betsy), and one great-nephew, Brantley Seamon. And many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

McNeill, Hurley Theodore
June 8,1931 ~ December 11, 2021
Mr. Hurley Theodore McNeill, 90, of Bermuda Village passed away Monday, December 27, 2021 at
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. He was born in Guilford County to the late Vernon McNeill
and Fairy Cagle McNeill on June 8,1931. Hurley served in the United States Navy on the USS
Hancock Aircraft Carrier from 1952-1956. He had a 25-year career as an automotive mechanic and
a second career at Wachovia Bank, retiring at the age of 69. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and
gardener. Hurley was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1965, serving as a deacon,
usher, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He was a loving husband to his wife, Sadie for
over 71 years. He will be remembered for his integrity, quick wit, sweet prayers, passion for
animals and love for his family. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister,
Lovella Spivey. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Brewer McNeill; children, Vicki Lagerwey (Niek),
Bryan McNeill (Nancy); grandchildren, David O'Brien (Angle), Katie Carlton (Zack), Kevin McNeill
(Veronica) and Erin McNeill; five great-grandchildren; sister, Eloise Lawson. A graveside service

Mr. Ray Lamar Wagner, 71, of Harmony, died Thurs
day, Dec. 23,2021 at his home.
He was bom March 6, 1950 in Peoria, 111. to the lateP ^ Mack McClelland and Ila Lomaine
Motes Wagner. Mr. Wagner was of
V® the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by; a daughter,
^ Michelle Lynn Barker; a sister, Dar-
:JB lene Livengood; and a brother, Joel
Ip' McClelland Wagner.' 5 Survivors include; his wife, Mel-

officiating.

Joann Bell Williams
Miss Joann Beli Williams, 81, formerly of Ridge Road,
Mocksville, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021 at Wake For
est Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a long
battle for several years with Alzheimer's.
She was bora on Nov. 5,1940
in Davie County to the late Mar-
vin lister and Anna Bell Seamon
Joann was a graduate of Cool
Springs High School and a mem-
ber of Society Baptist Church
in Statesville. She had been em- ' w f
ployed by CAP where she really ^
enjoyed her work there and also
enjoyed travelling to the beach ^ '
and fishing.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by: 2
brothers, Lester Williams and Tommy Williams; and spe
cial friend, Ralph Lowdermilk.
Survivors include: her brother, Richard Williams
(Elaine) of Advance; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was conducted at Society
Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin York offi
ciating.
