Cotton Mills which makes up the largest portion of the incorporated

churches and other structures with three public history museums.
Pictured is the stone dam on the South Yadkin River. The town’s
industrial roots trace back to the 1790s.

HOW ARE SITES SELECTED FOR THE NATIONAL REGISTRY?
The National Register's standards for evaluating the significance of properties were developed to recognize the
accomplishments of all peoples who have made a significant contribution to our country's history and heritage.
The criteria are designed to guide State and local governments, Federal agencies, and others in evaluating
potential entries in the National Register.
Criteria for Evaluation The quality of significance in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering,
and culture is present in districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that possess integrity of location,
design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and:
A. That are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history;
or
B. That are associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or
C. That embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the
work of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity
whose components may lack individual distinction; or
D. That have yielded or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history.

Previously, Cooleemee Plantation was on this list and had a sign nearby. It is not listed now, and I contacted
the NC Agency to ask why. A truck knocked it down several years ago. They always reassess whether it is
worthy of being replaced. I was told “They felt that the subject did not meet the criteria for the program and
voted to remove it from the system. The marker program does not mark structures for their architectural
significance and the original 1970 marker basically did only that. The committee discussed Hairston and the
plantation but did not find a suitable means to justify replacing the marker.”

Davie County Veterans’ Memorial, has lists of all war deaths, biographies and photos of WW2, Korean,
Vietnam, and Beirut Bombing deaths. Tom Ferebee’s 32 minute talk at the dedication in 1987 is included.

Remembering Davie County Protection and Service Personnel, contains biographies of the five law
enforcement personnel who died on duty and also photos and descriptions of the monument erected in their
