his home in Harmony at 6:30
Tuesday evening. He had been in

six years, but was critically ill

Daniel Dalton Smith, 48, Mocks-
ville ,RoOto 3, was instantly kill
ed Saturday night when struck
by a car while walking on High
way 158 in the Smith Grove com
munity.
Mr. Smith was the first traffic
fatality in Davio County this
year.
Robert Kimbrough, Sr., Negro,
633 West Twelfth Street, Winston-
Salem, was held until Sunday
afternoon on a technical charge
of manslaughter. He was releas
ed after posting a $500 bond.
State Highway Patrolman L. E.
Green investigated the accident
and said it happened this way:
Mr. Smith was waking south
on the highway and was on the
left aide of the pavement.
Kimbrough, driving south, was
passing a car driven by Vemon
Gray Phillips, also of Winiton*^
Salem.

killed on the spot
Doctors said death came from
a crushed skull although he had
several other injuries.
Mr. Smith, a farmer, was born
in Davic County and was a son
of Dalton Jesse Smith and Sally
Stella Hanes Smith.
His wife, the former Miss Flora
Mac Baker, died In 1947. ^

He Is survived by two sons, W.

Daniel D. Smith, 48, of Smith
Grove, was Instantly killed on the
ni^t of Jan. 24. when strxiek by a
car while walking south on the'
left side of the highway in Smith
Grove. Robert Kimbrough, Ne«

Phillips, of Winaton*SaIem. Kim-
brough's car struck Mr. Smith,
whose body was knocked about
30 feet. He apparently was killed
instantly. He auffcrcd a crushed
skull and other injuries.
Mr. Smicli spent his entire liier
in the Smith Grove community.
He was a son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. D. I. Smith. His wife, the
former Miss Flora Bnker, died In
1947. - His brother, John Smith,
died at Camp Jackson, S. C., of
spinal meningitis, while serving

82, was instantly killed about 8:30
p.m. Tuesday evening when struck
by an automobile in front of her
home on the Yadkinville highway
in Mocksville.
State Highway Patrolman T. J.
Badgett said Mra. Deadmon stepp
ed in front of a car driven by
Clyde Harbin of Mocksville, Rt.
[ 2. She died instantly of compound
fractures of legs and internal in-
juries. She wos ths second pedes
trian killed in Davie County this
year.
Patrolman Badgett said Mrs.
Deadmon arrived at her home in
a car driven by her daughter,
Miss Faith Deadmon. Mrs. Sally
HoUhouscr of Salisbury, a guest
of Mrs. Deadmon, was also In the
car.
According to Patrolman Bad- 1
gctt, the Deadmon car parked in
Tront of the home, headed in the
direction of Mocksville, with head
lights on. Mrs. Deadmon alighted
from the car and walked around
the machine, and stepped out in
to the path of Harbin^s car, y/blch
was heading in the direction of
Yadkinville.
Patrolman Badgett said no
charges have been preferred.
Mrs. Deadmon was born in Da-
vie County in I87I, daughter of
Felix and Catherine Berrier. She
spent her entire life in "the Au
gusta community.

edly early Friday morning at a

He was born in Davie County
on March 2, 168, a son of Charlie

good. He spent his entire life In
the Jerusalem community. For
pa years ho was employed by the
Erwih Mills at Cooleenaee. He re
tired six years ago.

Mrs. Davis died unexpectedly
April 8, after suffering a heart
attack.
She was born July 10, 1070 in
Davie County, a daughter of
Francis M. and Martha Redman
Hcndricks. On Dec. 21, 1892 she
was married to Samuel Thomas
Davis and had lived in Winston-
Salcm since that time. ^
Mrs. Davis and her husband
were among the oldest members
of the First Baptist Church in
Winston - Salem. She was active
in both church and~Sunday school
work.
Survivors Include her husband;
three sons, D. G. Davis of Char
lotte, Samuel F. Davis and Ed M.
Davis, both of Winston-Salcm;
one daughter, Mrs. Eric J. Dct-

Mr, Morrow.died April 13 while
a patient'in the Veterans Hospital
in Payelteville. He is the hus
band ofThe former Mary Meron-
oy, native of Mocksville.
A native of Albemarle, Mr.
Morrow moved to Fuyotteville
years ago and for several years
was connected with the federal
Internal Revenue Department.
Due to ill health he gave up this
position, but in recent years con
tinued his accounting work pri
vately.
Ho is survived by his wife, Mary
Meroncy Morrow of Faycilcvillc;
n son, Robert Lee, Jr., and a
grand daughter, both of Greens-
villc, S. C.; his mother, Mrs. Addic

Mr. Head died Monday morning
at the Mocksville Nursing Home
after a serious illnes of one week.
A native of Yadkin County, he
was born Aug. 8, 1873. Mr. Head
had lived in Cooleemee for the
past 33 years. Ho was employed
by the Brwin Mills until he retir
ed four ypars ago.
In 1897 he married Miss Sarah
Peacock who preceded him in
death in-1044. Ho is survived by
three sons, F. W., R. L., and L. R.
Head, all of Cooleemee; one
daughter, Mrs. J. W. Daywault o(
Harmony, Route 1; 14 grandchil
dren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Graves hanged himself in
a cell of the Forsyth County jail
early Tuesday morning. He was
taken into custody late Monday af
ternoon by Special Deputy Allen
F. Hoots of Clemmons who said
that Mr, Graves was attempting
to leap from the Yadkln River
bridge on Highway 158. At the
time, Deputy Hoots said Mr.
Graves stated that he was "all
-i^esed-Aip'-L-and-bad-plaiiufid-ia
take his life. He had been in de
clining health for the past year.
Sheriff Ernie G. Shore of For-
ayth County said that Mr. Graves
used his belt to hang himsci? to
the upper bars of his cell. The
body was discovered around 4:25
a.m. Tuesday morning.
He was born in Davic County,
Sept. 24, 1800, son of the late
Sallie Williams and John Graves.
He spent his entire life in Davlc
County and served as county su
pervisor for the highway deport
ment for the past 23 years.
He was a member of the Mocks
vllle Masonic Lodge and the P. O.
S, of A,
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Mary Davis Graves; one daugh
ter, Mrs, Ruth Bessent, both of
the homo; five brothers, G. O.
Ralph and Hugh Graves, all of

Violent death is. always un

sting. And the hurt remains re
gardless of the steps -taken to
ease the pain. But life is some
times cruel, and fate is not al
ways kind. It has been so since
the beginning of time.
The death of L, M. Graves left
a sting for a faith'/ul wife and
daughter. Both were devoted to
him all through the years. The
death of Luke also left a sting
to his friends, nnd ho had Uicm.
Even after 23 years of public
service this man still had
friends.
Yes, Luke had enemies. No
man can serve the public in the
capacity that Luke did without
incurring the wrath "of many.
That is the price of public ser
vice and it Is often too high a
price for many to pay. But
the reward of public service is
the accomplishment of such
work that will live on oftcr you
arc gone. Luke Graves, during
his 23 years as County Super
visor for the highway depart
ment, accomplished such in
Davie County.
Every man has his faults, and
Luke Graves was no exception.

oline, Luke rated high as-build
er and malntalner of Davie's
arteries of traffic. Under Luke's
supervision, the roads of Davie
County were always rated
among the'top in the State. In
this field Luke served Davie
County well.

was too late. Graves died several
minutes after the jailer cut the
leather belt that had been used in
the hanging.

Graves, for 23 years, a supervi
sor for the State Highway Com
mission, was confined in the jail
Monday by Special Deputy Allen
F. Hoots of CIcmmons.
Deputy Hoots said Graves had
threatened to lent) from a Yadkin
River bridge on Hlgluvay 158 west
of Clemmons. The deputy coax
ed Graves from his perch on the
bridge and took him to the Coun:
ty Jail to be confined overnight.

Rev. Bobby Ridge had charge of
the services, Burial was in the
Friendship Methodist Church in
the Millers Creek community in
Wilkes County.
Mrs. Nichols died in a States-
villo hospital from injuries suf
fered when the car in which she
was riding ran off the road at the
intersection of Highwoys 115 and
001 between Statcsville and
Wilkesboro about 4 p.m.
Hor son, W. T. Pago, 66, of
Page, Vo., his wife, and a grand
daughter, Elsie Woolrldge, 12,
were oil injured in the wreck and
taken to hospital in Statesville
for treatment. Mr. Nichols hod
both knees, broken and suffered
chest injuries. Both of Mrs. Nich-
ol's legs and one arm were brok
en and the child suffered a brok
en ankle.
The accident was ruled unavoid-
oble and no inquest was ordered.
The accident vlctin was a na
tive of Wilkos'County, born June
2, 18G8. She was a daughter of
Bobbitt and Sally Miller Bum-
garner.
She had lived In Coolcemcc
and Mocksville, Rt. 4, for the past
30 years.
At the time of hor death she
was living with a daughter, Mrs.
R. C. Page.

several years and entered the
nursing home on Dec. 1. She was
seriously 111 since Thursday.
A native of Buncombe County,
she was born July 23, 1885, the
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
