Woman Murdered While
Driving Car On US 64 East
A 43-year-old woman was murdmd
'early Stmday morning as site drove a car.
containing her husmnd and two small
children, on US 64 East, near Pork in
Davie County.
Mrs. Geraldine Shaw Frady of
MochsviJle Rt. 3 was found sitting under
the steering wheel of the 1964 Cadillac
where it had gone off the roadway alxKtt 7-
miles east of Mocksville.
Arrested and charged with murder was
her husband, John L. Frady, S5, of
Mocksville Rt. 3 Prady allegedly shot his
wife in the head with a J8 caliber pistol
white stie was driving home from
Lexington with their two small children.
The shooting Is believed to have occurred

Krady is being held in the Davie County

Thf car was spotted along US 64 Bast
around 2:15 a.m. by a passing motorist
who telephoned the SheruTs office that a
woman had apparently been injured in a
wreck. Deputy ateriff Carl CampbeQ and
the Davie CCunty Amtwiance Service
answered the call and found Mrs. Frady
still under the wdteel of the car which had
gone off the left side of the road. When they
found no evidence of life. Dr. Ben
Ridiards, Davie County Coroner was
called. Dr. Richards went to the scene and
ordered the liody removed to the Davie
County Hosin'tal where it was found that

vestigation Into the sltooting and arrested

home near Fork. State Bureau of In-
vestigation Agent Tom Rasmussen Joined
in the investigation Sunday morning
following the arrest of Ftady.
FVady was charged with first degree
murder in a warrant that qtedfied that the
"defendant did unlawfully, wilfully, and
feloniously, and of his malice
aforethought, did kill and murder

Mrs. Frady was bom in Davidson
Coimty.
Survivors include her husband; a

car before scraping a one-story beer
warehouse and striking a vacant dry
cleaning establishment at Hagcrstown,
Moryland.
Potts, 23, a pilot employed by Mid
Atlantic Airways of Greensboro, N.C.. was
flying a twtn-engino Beech 93 from
Wiltiamsport. Pa., to the Ralei^-Duriiam
Airport at the time of the accident.
Several witnesses said the plane had
circled in an apnnnMit nl tempt to avoid
going down In Ibgcrstuun's downtown
section and appeared to be heading for a
nearby Held.
The crash started a minor fire at the dry
cleaning place, but it was quickly ex
tinguished.
In addition to demolishing the parked
car. the piano struck two parked trucks.
The crasti is being investigated, by the
Nnlioitnl Transportation Safety Board.
He was a graduate of Piedmont
Aerospace Institute. He had been fiying for
a number of vcara ond held ratings in
Commercial Flight Instruction. Air-frame
and Powcrplont mechanics. His flight
experience included flying several types of
nirerafl.
Funeral services were held Saturday
afternoon at theOomaizer Baptist Church.
Burial was in the churdi cemetery.
Mr. Potts was bom' in Davlc County to
Ray and Louise Jones Potts and was a
graduate of Davie county High School.
Surviving are his parents of the home; a
sister. Mrs. Barbara Allen of Mocksville,
RI. 2. and a twin brother. Garry Potts of
Mocksville. Rt. 2.
The family requests that any memorials
be made to Cornatxer Baptist Church, of
which he was a member.

Roy Clinton Gough Sr., 55, of
9820 Talcott Avenue, Winston-
Saiem, a driver for the
Greyhound Bus Lines, died at
1:10a.m. Friday, January 25 at
Baptist Hosptial. Although he
had been ill four weeks, death
was unexpected.
He was bom in Yadkin County
to James Emory and Victoria
Clark Gough. He spent his early
Ufe In Davlc County and was
educated in the public schools
tore. He had lived in Forsyth
County 20year8 and had worked
for (he bus company 20 years.
Mr. Gough was a member of
the Wachovia Arbor Moravian
Church. He was a lieutenant in
the Civil Air Patrol and had
served overseas in World War
n.
He was married to Miss
Dorothy Hutchens on Aug. 31,
1846, who survives.
Also surviving are a
daughter, Mrs. Robert Ransom
of 3024 Talcott Avenue; a son.

A man who sought shelter
from a thunderstorm under a
tobacco bam Sunday died there
after a heart attack.
Jennings Ray Cook, 60, of
Yadkinville, Rt. 3. was found
around 8:40 p,m. Sunday.
Jennings had a history of
heart trouble and high blood
pressure. Paul L. Ogburn,
Iredell County medical
examiner, ruled the death a
heart attack.
Cook left home on foot around
1p.m. Sunday to visit a relative,
Avery Renegar. Renegar lives
about four miles away. Around
4 pjn.Cook was seen walking
hurriedy toward his house after
a thunderstorm came up.
At 8 p.m. a search was
started, and the body was found
a short time later under the
barn.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m.
Thursday at Sandy Springs
Baptist Church.
Hewasa farmer. He was bom
in Davie County.

Irene Sloan Hutchens. 69, or
Route 2, Mocksvillc, wife of
Rev. H. Wade Hutchens, was
held Sunday, February 10, at
Eaton's Baptist Church at 2
p.m. with Rev. Lewis W.
Williams and Rev. R. E. Adams
officiating.
She died Thursday, February
7, at 8 pjn. at the Baptist
Hospital in Winston-Salem. She
had been sick for 6 months and
seriously ill for 2 months.
Mrs. Hutchens was bom in
Iredell county in Olln, N.C. on
January 2,1905, daughter of the
late Charlie S. and Myra Huie
Woan. She was educated at
Harmony High School and
Appalachian State Teachers
College in Boone. She taught
school for 41 years, 23 years in
Davie County at William R.
Davie School and IB in Iredell
County at Monticcilo School
and at Celeste Henkel. She had
bMn retired only 4 years. She
was a Sunday School teacher
about 50 years, a leader in the
Missionary Society of the
churches over 30 years, and she
served in the Brier Creek
Association of the Baptist
churches many years. She was
serving as the president of her
Home Demonstration Club at
the time of her death.
She is survived by her
husband; a step-son, Howard
W. Hutchens; 2 grand-
^ughlcrs; and, 2 sisters. Mrs.
Jewell Sloan Zachary and Mrs.
Royd B. Madison of MocksvDle.

A native of Davie County she
was a member of Union Chapel
United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Mary Eta Bowman, 90,
of Rt. 7, Mocksville, died at It
a.m. Saturday February 9 at
her home. She had been
seriously ill for six weeks.
A native of Davie County, she
was the daughter of the late
Henry and Kissie Howell. She
was a member of Ml. Zion
Holiness Church.

tliesday night. February 12,
when his 1072 Kawasaki
motorcycle ran out of control on
Church Street in MocksviOe and
crashed into a brick wall.
This was Davie County's first
trafflc fatality.
Another motorcyclist who
was following Pennlnger,
James William Foster, Jr.. 19.
son of Mrs. Nancy Veach Foster
and the late Mr. Foster, of Rt. 7,
Mocksvilie, was sli^tly In
jured.
Mocksville Policeman James
W. Phipps, who Investigated the
accident, said that Pennlnger
was riding east on Church
Street about 9 p.m. Tuesday
when he lost control of his
motorcycle in a slight curve.
' Phlpps said the bike struck a
rock wall that ran along the
shoulder of the road.
' Foster, who was following
Pennlnger on hte 1972 Hcmda.
ran off the road and struck a
rock wall of a driveway to avoid
hitting Penninger, Phlpps said.
Pennlnger was taken to Davie
County Hospital by the Davie
Ambulance Service. Medical
examiner. Dr. Ben L. Richards,
pbonounced him dead -on<
arrival. Foster was treated at
the hospital and released.
The fbneral for Pennlnger
was held at 4 pjn. Thursday.

In Davidson County Collision

In a two^r collision In which five other
people were ipjured.
Jerry Mare Combs, IS, of Mocksvllle Rt.
t, died Tuesday morning around 9 a4n. at
the Community General Hospital in
Thcmasville of injuries he suffered in the
wreck. He was the son of Mrs. Lula Dyson
Lumley and a step-son of William H.
Lumley.
Combs was a passenger in a 1966 Old-
smcbile driven by Thomas Lee Dyson, 17,
of Mochsville Rt 7. His broths. Gary
Combs, was listed in fair to satisfactoiy
condition. Dyson, the driverof the vehicle,
was listed In statde condition in the in
tensive care unit of the hospital.
The accident occurred at 7:20 p.m. about
three miles west of the intersection of US
64 and Highway 109. The Oldsmobile was
apparently involved in a hit-and-run in
cident just before the more sertous
coHision according to J. R. Blackwelder of
the State Highway Patrol.
The Dyson car first struck the rear of a
pickup truck belonging to Alfred Younts of
East Center St., Lexington, Blackwelder
said. The trooper was talking to Younts
when the second accident occurred about
three miles cast of the first.
"I wish to the Lord I could have stopped
them before they got there," Blackwelder
said.
The Dyson car apparently veered across
the center tine of the hi^way, rtmning
head-on into a 1974 Lincoln ^ntinental
driven by Titus Cable of Oakboro. Both
carsareconsidereda total loss. Cable and
two passengers in his vehicle. Rebecca
Bracy, SB, and Miles Bracy, 13, both of
Rowland, were given emergency treat
ment at the hospital and released to seek
further treatment closer to their homes.
Investigation by the State Highway
Patrol Is continuing.

be held Thursday at 2 pm at the Good Hope
Baptist ChurOh at Carpenter.
He was torn In Wake County and at
tended sehoote in Davie.

fatality of 1974.
The woman was identified as Bertha
Mae Miller of Mocksville Rt. 4.
Paul R. Daniels <»r Bricktown, N.J. was
injured in the accident. He was taken to
the Davie County Hospital and was later
transferred in a critical condition from
head injuries to the Baptist Hospital in
Wnston^lem.
Helen C. Phillips of Hazlet, NJ., a
passenger in the Daniirlk ca was also

State Highway Patrolman J.L. Payne
said his investigation showed that Mrs.
Miller was driving south on US 60t about
2:3(1 p m.. April lOth, when she slammed
on her brakes to avoid hitting a car that
was passing a car in the northbound lane.
The car went out of control. Payne said,
striking the third vdiicle. driven by
Daniels, head on.
The driver of the passing vehicle, Gene
Gabriel of Ulster, Pa., was not injured.
Mrs. Milter was driving a 1968 Pontiac,
Daniels a 1968 Buick and Gabriel a 1969
Dodge truck. No damage was reported to
the truck and ll,(K)0 damage wes reported
to the Pontiac and S1.000 to the Buick.
Mrs. Miller, who was atiout 8 months
pregnant, was taken to the Davie County
Hospital where she later died. An attempt
to save the unborn child was unsuccessful.
Trooper Payne said Gabriel has been
charged with improper passing. An in-
vestigation is continuing, he said.
Mrs. Miller was bom in Davie County
and had attended the local schools.
She is survived by two daughters.
Ulenda and Emma Miller of the home; her
parents. Mr. and Mrs. John K. Neely of the
luime; three sisters. Misses Betty Jean,
Paul Kaye and Mary Ann Neely of the
home, five brothers. Jerry L. Miller and
John, James and Paul Nevly of the home

ducted Sunday at 3 o'clock at
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church by

was in City Memorial Park.
Mr. Casey was bom August
19,1918, in Davie County, son of
the late O. L. Casey and
Stella Leckie Casey. He was
educated in the Dawe schools.
He was manager of the Food
Town Store located in the'
Southgate Shopping Center and
*was a member of Gloria Dei
Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Virginia Whitl^, whom
he married on Nov. 18,1939; one
brother, Dewey W. Casey of
Mocksville; and two sisters,
Mrs. Pauline Hollett of
Mocksville and Mrs. Howard
(Marie) Vance of Detroit,
Michigan.

73, of Rt. 2, Mocksville died
Saturday at 5:15 p.m. at Davie
County Hospital.
Funeral services were con
ducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Oak
Grove United Methodist Church

Mrs. Bowles was bom in
Davie County to the late John R.

She was the widow of Calvin S.
Bowles, who died in 1938.

sisters, Mrs. Annie Williams
and Mrs. Nancy McQamrock,
both of Mocksville; one grand-
son and one great-grandson.

and was a retired employee of
Heritage Furniture Company.
He was a member of the First
Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife. Mrs.

Mr. Daniel was a salesman for
Augusta Dry Goods, Augusta,
Georgia. He was active in civic
and poiilical life for many years
serving on the Davie County
Board of Elections for thirty
years and for many years
served on the Davie County
Welfare Board.
The funeral was held Friday,
May 24 at 2 p.m. in Eaton's
Funeral Chapel in Mocksville.

Davie's First Fatal Airplane Crash
Claims Lives Of Pilot, Passenger
The crash of a single-engiJie airplane
shortly after-the-takeoff at TWia Lakes
Airport aroond 10:15 Tuesday morning
claimed the lives of two men.
Killed on impact and pinned in the
wreckage of the aircraft were Herman
Ashley Sutton, 32, of Advance Rt. 2, the
pilot, and Robert Brvin Bucker, St, of
Cacveland, Ohio, the owner of the plane.
It was reported that Ettcko* had pur*
chased the Swift one*engine aircraft last
week in South Carolina.
It was also reported that Eucker had
engaged Sutton to pilot his aircraft to
Asheviile because he was unfamiliar with
flying in this area. An aircraft from Sugar
Valley was to pick Sutton up in Asheviile
and return him home. It was reported that
Bucker would continue on to an airport in
West Virginia.
Sutton was an experienced pilot and had
served as an instructor at &igar Valley,
Strawberry Hill and Twin Lakes.

owned by Scrip Robertson. The cause of
the crash was unknown at press time.
Ihe Davie County Rescue Squad and the
Fork Volunteer Fire Department were
called to (he scene and removed the bodies
from the plane which was upside down.
Representatives of (he Federal
Aeronautic Association are investigating
the crash.
Hiis is believed to be the first fatal
airplane crash to ever occur In Davie
County.

musle circles In Central Ken
tucky and was a member of the
Church of the Ascension, an
Episcopal Church at Frankfort.
She was organist for the church
for some years.
Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. Monday at Rogers
Funeral Home at Frankfort.
The Rev. George P. Donehoo,
vicar of St David's Church,
Pikeville, officiated. Burial
followed In the Frankfort
Cemetery.
