Our beginnings have been dated as early as 1780, when the Old Whitaker Meeting House held camp meetings. These were held not far from today's church building in the Smith Grove area. Moses Brock. This church is one of the successors of old Whitaker's Church. Services were held in the academy, prior to building the church in 1877. FACTS ABOUT SMITH GROTE CAMP GROUND AND CHURCH ,Gr(y7e Church is an outgrowth of the old Whitaker church, one of the first in this section of North Carblina, Whitaker v/a built as early as 17^0 on the east side of IJ^tbh^an's Creek. While on a visit here, he dreamed of a beautiful grove in which was being conducted a glorious camp meeting. The large arbor was later sold at auction and bought by a neighbor, Mr. W. P. Williams, who converted it into a bam# A draiit was developed with Smith Grove as the center. A parsonage was built and was occupied as such unbil Parmingtcn was nnde the center. The parsonage is now occupied by P. A. Naylor and family. They purchased this more than fifty years ago \vhen the center for the circuit was changed to Parmington. *The Smith Gtoto Academy is an older institution than the church proper and churcl services were held in this before the church was built. When consolidation of schools came along this luilding ceased to be used for s chool purposes and was boiight by the church and moved across the highway and made into Sunday school rooms. A few years ago at one of these reunions, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bhithcox were present. She was the former Julia Heokard. They were the. first couple to be married in this church, on July 20, 1881. The second couple to be married here was George W. Sheek and Camilla Kimbrough Tidio were united in marriage here on September 22, 1881. Bothv ^ ^ couples reared large families and have children and many grandchildren in this sectio: " t: ^of the state, but both couples have passed to their reward, Mr. George W. Sheek being ^ the first to pass away. At the last homecoming, Mr. and Ihrs. Smith Grove Church is a successor of the old vniitaker Church, The site of VJhitaker Church, not being a favor able one, gave vay to a better site at Smith Grove. •Tiia selection of this site came as a result of a dream by the Rev. Moses Brock, a native of Davie Cpi^ty. VThile hers on a visit, he dreamed of a glorious camp meeting being conducted i.n a beautiful grove. Desiring to realize his dream, he; sent a friend to find such a grove as had been presented to him in his dream. The man returned without finding the desired spot. To further the search, Mr. Brock accompanied the friend and they found the beautiful spot 'tdiere a camp ground \t8.s later erected on land given by Arthur Smith. V/ith the erection of a central arbor for 'services and tents for teraporaiy living quarters, Moses Brock's dream came true. The first meeting was held about I828. with Peter Doub as the Presiding • Elder. One-hundred and fifty to two-hundred tents dotted the grove and tremendous cro^^ds attended the services. About one-hundred and fifty ^ sinners "v^ere converted and many Christians were encouraged and strength- ^ ened. Camp meetings were continued for many years. Tne lumber, including that for pews, v/as dressed by ijj hand. An interesting and unusual feature was the center division of the 5 pews. Richardson, Jr. The Old Academy, >jhich stood across the road from the site of the first church building, "VTas used for services before and during the building of the church. In 1925 it was moved and ms attached to the church to be used as Sunday School Class Rooms. In 1937 the men of the church erected a Fellowship Building -vdiich was called the "Hut". Much of the material and labor was donated. Rev. H. C. Freeman, pastor at this time, helped mth the manual .labor, ..This "Hut" -vTas later moved near the marker "vhiich had been erected at the sito of the old camp ground. The church was remodeled between 19^8-1951' The center division was removed and changes \Tere made in the pulpit area at an approximate cost of three- thousand dollars. iii * . It^ ^ The next major change came when the Old Academy, which was being used for £. class rooms, was moved to make way for a new educational building, A build- m q VO ing committee v/as elected by the church and approved by the Quarterly ^ ^ ci Conference. They were: J. M. Groce, G. B. Tfeylor, W. G. Arrasworthy, ^ d ^ Louise Smith, Jewell Seeding and Ray Cornatzer. This committee met June 30, ® ^ ~ 1958. After studying the bids that had been opened at a previous meeting, a ^ ^ ^ motion was made, seconded and carried, that the contract for the building be o o , given to the low bidder, R. C. Speas, general contractor. The bid was ^ ^ jz $30,125.97. y ££ ^ The Educational Building Program was started under the guidance of the f Rev. George E. Smith and the building was constructed under the leadership ^ of the Rev. Wade G. Rogers. A ground-breaking service t/as held on July 27^ ^ 1958. The building was completed in a short time and with a lot of hard ^ work and co-opeiration by the members, also help from the Diike Endowment Fund, ■r the indebtedness was removed within the first two years of the pastorate of^ Rev. Dwight Mashburn. X cJ > n rne Dedication Service -v^as held on November l8, 1962. The principal participants vere Bishop Nolan B* Harmon of the Western North Carolina Conference, Rev. John H. Carper, Superintendent of the Thomasville District and Rev. Dwight Mashburn, Pastor. Shortly after this, plans were underv?ay for erecting a new Sanctuary and a building fund was —, . started on February I7, I963. A building committee was appointed and ' approved by the Quarterly Conference. The committee was composed of: . ^ J. M. Groce, Chairman, Anne Boger, Secretary, Raymond Markland, Treasurer, Clyde Boger, Nancy Robertson, Ollie \7ard and James G. Hendrix. After a study of architectural draiTings, a church conference -vTas held Simday night August 7, I966, to decide "VThether or not to accept.the final plans for the Sanctuaiy. A majority of those present voted to accept the plans as they had been submitted to the building committee. Four members of the building committee, two trustees and the pastor. Rev. Paul M. Hart, met Tr/ith the contractor, Tierney Construction Company, . Inc. and signed the contract for the new building at a cost of $71,680. At this church conference a motion was made, seconded and carried, that-the-building committee, mth the approval of the tnistees, be responsible for disposing of the lumber and furnishings of the old church. On August 10, 1966 the members of the church began the task of removing the Sanctuary which had stood for a period of almost ninety years. During the next four days, from early morning until late at night, many people of all ages combined their efforts in the demolition of.the building. Recenilv bumla. 5c rooms were added. fflSTORY OF SMITH GROVE METHODIST CHURCH The selection of this site was a result of a dream by Reverend Moses Brock, a . native of Davie County. While here on a visit he dreamed of a beautiful grove in which was being conducted a glorious camp meeting. He said he wanted to realize his dream, and for that reason he sent out a friend to find such a grove as had been presented to him in his dream. The man returned without findding the desired spot, but Mr. Brock accompanied him on a further search. They found the beautiful spot where a campground was later erected on land given by Arthur Smith. There was a central arbor for services, and around it a double row of tents for temporary living quarters. There were between 150 to 200 tents. The first meeting was held about 1828, with Peter Doub as the Presiding Elder. The crowd was immense. Davie county PuDiic LiDiary fctocksville, NC Many Christians were encouraged and strengthened and about 150 people converted. So, Moses Brock's dream was realized. Camp meetings were kept up for many years. The last one was held in 1886, with Reverend W.C.Wilson as preacher in charge. As an outgrowth of the campmeetings. Smith Grove Church was organized. The congregation was interested in more than a camp meeting for the summer months. They wanted a year round meeting place, so a church building as erected in 1877 at a cost of about $1200.00. Wilson Ellis, Dr. M.D. Kimbrough, Anderson Beauchamp and others gave money and timber. The lumber was dressed by hand, including the pews. An interesting feature was the center division of the pews. This men used one side, the women the other, with a shoulder-high partititon between them. A circuit was developed with Smith Grove as the center. A parsonage was built at Smith Grove and used as such until Farmington was made the center of the circuit, around 1890 to 1894. vb ar *- O o j: K ui j: rj The first couple .married in the church was Julia Heckard to Dan' Hmthcox on July . 20,1881. The second couple married was Caniilla Kimbrough to George .W. Sheek on September 22, 18M. - . . . . - . ' The old academy (schoolhouse) which stood across the road from the site of the church building was used for services before and during the building of the church. This building was moved, in 1925, and united to the church to be used as Sunday School rooms." ^ - In 1937, the men of the church erected a Fellowship building which was called ^ "The Hut". Much of the material and labor was donated. Reverend H.C. Freeman was Jii pastor at the time and helped with the manual labor. This "Hut" was later moved, near the 5 marker that had been erected at the site of the old Campground. Shortly after this, plans .were underway for erecting a newsanctuary. A fund for this was started on February 17, « 1943. The church was remodeled between 1948 and 1951, The center division was taken out and changes were made in the. pulpit area. These changes were made at an ^ approximate cost of $3,000.. ^ In 1951 the Circuit was changed, making a new charge, consisting of Bethlehem, Dulin, and Smith Grove Churches, called the Dulin's Charge. 0aV!e county Punac LiDrary ^locksviile, NC The next major change was when the old Academy, which was being used for classrooms, was moved to make way for a new educational building. On June 30,1958 the building committee awarded the contract to R.C. Speas, General Contractor. The bid was for $30,125.97. The building was completed in a short while. With a lot of hard work and cooperation by the members and some money from Duke Endowment the debt was soon paid in full. On November 18,1962 the dedication service for the Education Building was held with Rev. Dwight Mashbum, pastor and Rev. John H. Casper, District Superintendent. The sermon was by Bishop Nolan B. Harmon. A church conference was held on August 7, 1966 and the decision was made to build the a new sanctuary. The contractor was Tiemey Construction Co., Inc. and the contract was signed for $71,680. On August 10, 1966 the members of the church began the task of removing the old sanctuary which had stood almost ninety years. During the next four days from early morning until late at night many people of all ages combined their efforts in the demolition of the building. The first marriage in the new santuary was Brenda Kay Smith to Jerry Wayne ^ Stoctonon June 15,1968. X o 2 The organ was dedicated on November-1, 1970. It was given by Mrs. Nan ^ Comatzer in memory of her husband, Ray Comatzer. Reverend Fred A. Robbins was the pastor. 10 County PuG.^v 3l5 " The formal Dedication of Smith Grove United Methodist Church as Sunday, February 20, 1972 at 11 a.m. Participating ministers were Rev. Fred A. Robbins, pastor; Bishop Earl G. Hunt, Jr.; Rev. George Rudisil, District Superintendent; and Rev. Paul M. Hart, former Pastor. In the years since 1972 there have been many other changes in our church building and grounds here at Smith Grove. Improvements have been made in the cemetery. An arbor has been added to our "Hut". Beautiful stained glass windows were installed. The parking lot has been paved. Our pews have been upholstered. A playground has been built for our children. Plans are underway now for an addition to our "Hut" or Fellowship HaU. We continue the work of all those who have come before us as we work to build for the future of Smith Grove United Methodist Church as a center of worship, a place of fellowship, and above all, of service to God. . I remember as a little girl going to the Christmas program with my sister and my uncle Otis Howard. There was always a great big Christmas tree reaching to the top of the church. Under the tree was a little brown bag for everybody to get when the program was over. In each bag was an orange, an apple, and a little stem of raisins. I am Mrs. Edna C. GrifEn-1 have lived in Smith Grove since 1948. We attended Smith Grove Methodist Church. I have many friends that are gone. They were special to me. My husband the late Grover C. Griffin has a resting place in Smith Grove cemetery. His funeral was in the old church September 12, 1960. Ourdaughter,Mrs. Evelyn G.Howard died January 30,1994. A graveside service was on-- February 2, 1994. On account of weather the service was held inside the church. \ On September 8,. 1950 .Evelyii M. Griffin and Gordon L. Howard were married in the qld chufch. £ vb Jewell Deeding was a life long member of Smith Grove Methodist Church. She was an active to - member, holding positions as pianist, teacher, recording secretary, building committee of the n church, and was active and very devoted to the W.S.C. I enjoyed the Christmas program. Jerri Page and I put the Christmas play together the year 1946. I thought we did good and that made me feel good. 1 remember the lawn parties we had a long time ago. We made ice cream and had cake. I remember the meetings we had at night, and I can still hear that thing running that gave us lights...and the bugs coming in. I remember walking to church for Sunday school at times. Now I am 78 years old and have four children and Gray has passed away. He is in the Smith Grove cemetery. He passed away February 24,1989. M.G. Everin - Pastor Gray and I married in the Smith Grove Parsonage July 3,1937.1 remember the first Sunday we went to church as husband and wife, and I sat with Gray on the side with the men. I was only 18 years old and I thought I was something as a new bride in my blue dress and white shoes. I remember taking our first baby to Smith Grove Church. Also our first little boy saying his first little Christmas speech. I remember it as though it was yesterday. Me, my brother and sister were on the front bench X. ^ with other children. The preacher said every home has a boss. My little sister raised her hand - ^ and said "Mommy". The congregation got a good laugh, along with the preacher, but he saw the kids were listening and I know Arm was right. 3. ^ as a child. A memory of Mrs. Nancy Robertson told her children about the old camp meetings she attended She said the family loaded what they needed in a horse-drawn wagon and went to the campground for a 2 week or longer revival. She said the women and children stayed on the grounds night and day, but the men and boys took turns going home to feed the.animals. The women and older girls did all the cooking and the little ones played. She said it was a time they all waited for. Ted Johnson Robertson joined the church at a very early age. Ted said he had to go to church every Sunday to see what kind of cookie Mrs. Nan brought him. Memories of Ann Hendrix Boger Smith Grove Church has been a part of my life for sixty-three years and some of my best memories happened here. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and brother and sister are buried in our cemetery. I remember lawn parties, box suppers, Chrismas programs, and Sunday school. The old church had two wood stoves for heating in winter and large .windows to let in a breeze in summer. I remember walking to church on Sundays. There were steps on the bank of 158 and a walk with a short rock wall. In one of the group pictures Fm sitting on that wall. I was about five. The church was divided down the middle and the women sat on one side and the men on the other. When my brother married in 1950 he told his new bride about the'seating' arrangements. She told him they were goihgto start anew tradition~and they did. In the summer of '43 Oliver Green held a revival and I accepted Christ as my "Savipur. Reverend J.W: Vestal was our^pastor. I w^ baptised along with Sis and Shorty Robertson, S^ahHendrix, Lois Collins and one other I dpiFt remember. . vb X t ^ Special people I remember were Mrs. Nan Comatzer, my first teacher. We sat in the little chairs with .arms and got a picture card each Sunday. Ollie Ward let us sit on the porch for £- our lesson. Our classrooms were in the old school building that now sits in Jack Paige s pasture. V> Edwin Williams was our teenage teacher and we really gave him a hard time. Aunt Mary Naylor taught the yoimg ladies. ^ I remember the ladies who quilted—Beulah Hendnx, Jewell Beeding, Ellerbee Sheek, ^ Gladys Groce, Vera Spry, Nan Comatzer, Nancy Robertson, Lazara Kimbrough, Nell Smith, fe Mattie Bowden, Bertha Smith, Maqorie Comer, Nannie Hendrix, Bessie Penry and others, o These ladies were also some of the charter members of the W.S.C.S. I remember Mr. Will Spry singing bass and the men sitting in the Amen Comer. Vance ^ and Margaret Dunn have always meant a lot to me. They encouraged me to cpme to prayer S meeting and to sing. Vance always came early and opened windows. Mr. John Groce always o whistled. ^ I hope and pray the children growing up now see good male models to look up to as I did when I was a child. We were in the old church and our class was in a room that had an outside door that opened onto a small porch. Every Sunday in the summer we would go onto the porch for our lesson. These were 12-13 year olds and they could not sit still for a Sunday School lesson. At that time there was not much available for teaching resources except a quarterly and their attention span was not very long. They would become restless and before long one would tip their chair and fall off the porch. Needless to say, this would disrupt the class. For a summer outing I took the class for an all day trip and picnic to Reynolds Park in Winston-Salem. They rode in the back of our pickup truck and I was the only adult. We have secured a loan from the Buddingard Loan for up to $40,000. This loaves $9,027.71 (not including landscape) that has to he raised by the time the buildiqg is ^oiipleted in toch or Ap^e We will, of course, borrow only what we have to have to ^ contractor sends us, but if wo do have to borrow the entire th<ai be paying (at 6% interest) $200.00 per month interest out of a f^.OO payment to the Building and Loan. Lots already reserved in old part of cemetery wiR be honored. Members of our church . who wish to release their reservation and be buried in new addition may do so. 3 '^Lots in new addition may be reserved by any member of said church, and must be properly marked and recorded in the plat book of the Smith Grove United Methodist . Church Cemetery records. 4. Members of said church can reserve up to four plots, and reservations must be paid mthin ninety days if reservations are to become effective. The trustees reserve the right to cancel reservations on unused plots so that they can become available for someone else, and where reservations are canceUed payments wRl be refunded. 5. Reservation rights will be granted to members of said church first, except where husband or wife is not a member, or in cases where a child dies first. 6. Reservations will be canceUed when wife or husband of deceased remarries and does not request that their lots be held for them. Reservations WiU be canpeUed when persons move away and are not heard from for a period of five years. 7. Members (husband or wife of members) wiU be charged $25.00 per person for the right to be buried in said cemetery. 8. Nonmembers vnU be charged $100.00 for the right to be buried in either part of the ceinetery, except members of Dulin and Bethlehem churches wiU be charged $25.00 to be buried in old part of ceinetery where plots have already been started. 9. Member (or their husbajid or wife who is not a member and dependant children) can be buried in old cemetery as long.as space is avaUable. 10. No plants wiU be planted on plots, no gravel on graves, no curbing or fences around plots, aU graves leveled and grassed, no markers can protrude above ground except head stone. 11. No flowercshould be left oh graves more than one week (if they are the church reserves the right to have them removed). Any props used with flowers must be removed when flowers are removed, and flow&r and props cannot be discarded where they wiU cause any inconvenience or distract from the beauty of said cemetery, 0 12. Monuments will be limited and shaU meet ail speciGcations, which includes sizes, setting, H j aligning and other requirements set forth in instructions for Grave Digger and Undertaker. .; ^ AU work done by monument companies must meet said requtements. . : 13. Wives vnU be buried at left of husbands. 14. A trust fund must be maintained in the name of Smith Grove United Methodist Church ^ Cemetery (and cannot be confused or combined with any other trust the church has) for ,! g the deposit of all funds received for the rights and privUages to be buried in said cemetery, all funds Ranted in wiUs, and any funds given that is to become a permanent part of : Cemetery TVust Fund. 15. These funds are to be deposited in an account that the Trustees of the church recommends to the Administrative Board, and at no time can these funds be withdrawn. The interest can be ^ ^ be withdrawn annuaUy for the purpose of mowing and maintaining the said cemetery. • ~ "'~x 16.
