The present fJak: Grove Methodit't Episcopal Church, South, is the outgrowth of old Vfliitaiier's Meetii)g House and several t^ethodist "Classes" held at school- .S? house in this coimnunity. Quoting from Rev. W. L. Grissom's History of Davie ^ r'ethodism, wo find the statement that Oak Grove was one of the successors of Q ^ V/hitaker's. He says: "The congregation first worshiped in McOlararock*s schoolhouse, and Jn 3.850 moved to Gain's Schoolhouse. The present church was built, about 188^'." t'&'. Grissom's history was written in 1889. An old ^bcks- ville Circuit Register contains the names of members of "McClararoc's School liouse Class," Nov I848: Isaac W. Jones, Class Leader Henry Hunter >, Esther Harbin Cheshire Sain ? A later list adds the ^ names of 1 Nfeiry VJellDEin Ezekiel McCarter ^ Elizabeth McCarter Nancy Nailer ^ and also states: "This class is removed, some to Sain's School House and r4 some to Center, etc." In the Circuit Minutes dated July lAth, 1849, when 5 John T3.11ett w«;: pastor, it is recorded that the six Sabbath Schools of the Mockaville Circuit were at South River, Concord, Mocksville, Gain's School ^ House, Center, and Call's School House. S5 The minutes of 1851 name David Hendrix as superintendent at S^ s r School House, and in 1852 Cheshire Sain held this office. About 1^0-71 % the place seems to have been called Roger's School House and C. Sam is nona- nated as Sunday School superintendent at that time. The list of members at Roger's School House about 1870-71, and the list at Oak Grove, a few pages further in the same Circuiit Register, contain the identical names, so s shows that the same "Class" or congregation had several titles before the c/ permanent name of Oak Grove Church was chosen. The pastor reported a Sabbath School at every church on the Mocksville Circuit. The school at Oak Grove had suspended some weeks before on account of measles, but had been reorganized with renewed interest." The minutes of Fourth Quarterly I884 records this interesting statement: "at Oak Grove a meeting of great power closed last night (Sept. 188A). The members also constructed the church parsonage and the fellow ship hall; the latter was dedicated in 1967. Oak Grove maintains a full pro gram of worship, service, and fellow ship. Worship services and Sunday School classes are on Sunday morn ings. Other specialmeetings for vyorship and building of relationships focus on the themes of the Christian calendar. The church has an Easter sunrise ser vice, Christmas candle lighting pro- giam, homecoming, and barbecue sup- I per- Two United Methodist Women's circles meet once a month and contrib ute funds, goods, and time for confer ence, district, and local programs. The church's unit of the United Methodist Men meets the first Sunday morning of each month. Oilier ongoing activities include a United Methodist Youth Fellowship, Vacation Church School. Bible ajid religious studies in the fall and spring, an ecumenical senior citizens' group, confirmation classes, and an exercise group (winter). The church maintains a cemetery in the rear of its building. The congregation is also an active participant in district and county orga nizations, such as the Davie Council on Ministries, United Metnodist Women, and Davie Board of Missions and Church Extension. "Oak Grove United Methodist Church enjoys a long history in Davie County, beautiful facilities and grounds, and a succession of competent and caring pastors." said pastor, the Rev. Ronald Mann. "Its long-time members bring to the worship and service of the church a rich store of memories from their deep roots in the community. At the same time, its members and friends find in their common life nourishment for their journey of faith in the present, and they anticipate the gifts of God in the future." According to records, Asbury preached there in 1794. Only Whitaker Cem^ery remains with this church ceasing to function in 1830's. The Methodist believers went by several names including McClamrock's School House Class, Rogers and Sains before the permanent name of Oak Grove was chosen. However, in 1849 were listed as being on the Mocksville District with John Tillett as pastor. In 1875, Oak Grove was assessed $75.00 for pastor's salary, and in 1872 showed an enrollment of 96 members. In 1889 a frame church was erected on the present grounds. Davie Circuit was formed in 1895 and Oak Grove Church was put on thds charge and remained there until 1961 when we became a station church. The parsonage was located in Mocksville. A belfry was later added to the original church with the church bells, being donated by T.S. Eanef Sr. This was transferred when the new brick church was built. A building program around 1921 involved he adding of class rooms to the frame church and remained until the early 1950's when the present brick church building was erected by the people of Oak Grove Church. Dedication of the church was held September 1,19^ with the Rev. Bob Oakley and former pastors, the Rev. H. D. Jessup and the Rev. E.M. Avett present. The Oak Grove church soon saw a need for full time pastor and plans were made to become a station church. Interest in the parsonage in Mocksville and again the people of w the church working together built the present parsonage across from the church. This was in 1961 with the Rev. George Auman being the first full time pastor. First organized around I78O, Fkancis Asbury preached there in 1794. The Meeting House ceased to function in the 1830's, and only Whitaker's Cemetery remains, ?? the church was part of the MocksvilleCircuit, with John Tillett serving as pastor. HISTORY OF DAVIE COUNTY SCHOOLS PAGE 200 i Oak Grove 1918 Mm This school was first called Sain's School House. The little public school was called by the students "Kent College". This name derived from a man named Kent who lived near there. Mr. Pinkney Turner taught there at one time. (Mary Jane Heitman) Attending this school from Mocksville were Jess Lee Clement, Thomas Rich, Thomas B. Bailey, E. L. Gaither. The boys walked out there, carrying lunch with them — mostly bread and molasses. T. B. Bailey took his molasses in a bottle. Houses along Main Street then would have been Lem Gaither house, at that time Ephraim Gaither home and Calvin Rich home (Dr. Eckherd in 1963), and the Lemuel Bingham house (now Rodwell estate). Pinkney Turner taught there and the History Room at Davie County Public Library has many of his pages of neatly written rolls of students with their attendance marked. "Register of the free public school in School District No. 30 for whites opened 26 November 1877. signed R Turner." The original schoolhouse was a two-room building with 3 grades being taught in one room, and four grades being taught in the other room. The last year that the school was open was the school year of 1938-39. Everyone worked hard, learned a lot and was ready for the eighth grade when they left there and closed the doors in April of 1939. The building was then used for church suppers and miscellaneous member fiinctions. (Newspaper article September 24,1998) The old school was later covered with shingles. It was torn down in the early 60's when the church built a new brick fellowship hall near that site. Mabel Angell Couch attended Oak Grove through the fifth grade. She walked a mile to the school. Her first grade teacher was Miss Carter and her teacher for the following grade was Miss Bronson. Then she rode the bus and attended school at Mocksville on Main Street. The church, three miles fi'oni MocksvilJe, was granted $3,000 to ward its $35,310 educational build ing. It is one of two churches in the Thomasville District to receive construction funds. The other is Macedonia church in Davidson county. The total for the district was $9,000, and the total for the 31 churches aided in North Carolina amounted to $195,500. DAVIE COUNTY E^^reI^i^ Clergy Couple Husband-Wife Ministering In Davie By Jeanne Houpe Davie County Enterprise Record On the day when most families are spending time together, tlicy have little time to see each other. Sunday is their busie.st day. When Oak Grove United Method ist Church welcomed new pastor David Talbert in Juiie, tliey knew they would rarely see their minister's wife - espe cially on Sunday. At the .same time her husband began hisdutiesatOakGrove,TammyTalbeil was beginning her .service to the Farm- ington charge as pastor at Farmington, Wesley Chapel and Mt. Olive United Methodist churches. WhileTammy serves her three con gregations on a schedule that includes two sermons every Sunday morning and three sermons on one Sunday each month, David is busy with Sunday functions at Oak Grove. According to the Talberts, their churches have also had to do some adjusting to the situation. "Hie churches have been real good to work with us," .she said. Tammy is the first female pastor to serve the Farmington charge, and the Talberts are Da vie County's first Meth- odi.st clergy couple. According to David, this is the first ti me Oak Grove has had a minister who did not reside in their parsonage. Hie Talberts live in the Farmington parson age and use Oak Grove's as an office. Tammy said their district supervi sor decided which parsonage they would live in. The Farmington parson age is close to her churches and six miles from Oak Grove. > •O It can get a little confusing when people call to speak to the Rev. Talbert, and the Talberts anticipate some hand to answer questions in the future. Even though they don't have plans for children in the immediate future, David said it will create an interesting situation. But the situation is not as difficult for the Talberts as it may appear. "We have known ever since we met this is how life would be for us," Tammy said. "We have never known it any other way." The Talberts met while in seminary at Duke University and were married two years ago. They graduated in May and moved to Davie County in late June. David, who is from Concord, was working in the family business, when he felt the call to the ministiy and returned to school. Tammy hasknown since 10th grade tills is how she wanted to spend her life. But prior to meeting David she planned to return to Virginia where she grew up in King William near Richmond. As it turns out, the Talberts are one of more than 30 clergy couples in the Western North Carolina Conference, which covers Greensboro and every thing west of it One of the most special times in their relationship was being ordained together, David saidi TheTalberts agree there are a lot of benefits to being married to another minister. "We find ourselves sharing a good bit," David said. They only have to buy one set of- books arid can talk over sermon ideas with one another. But they never have the'same ser mon even if they start with the same ideas. Theirstylesare difTerent,Tammy explained. She said David is a teacher who lays foundations and explains how and why to his congregation. Tammy is more of a story teller. "She captures the narrative nature of the Bible and brings that to life," David said. In addition tosermon ideas,Tammy said they also discuss how they should deal with situations or problems they or their church members encounter. "It's very helpful to have a spouse in the same profession-foradvice," David said. Together they participated in com munion services with home bound members from their churches and have gradually been meeting people in each other's churches. Tammy said she can occasionally attend an event at David's church if nothing is happening at one of hers, and he gets to do the same from time to time. David said the Bishop and those who appoint ministers are sensitive to the situation of clergy couples. They work hard to place spouses close to gether, and the Talberts are happy with the situation. Oak Grove Patriotism There's a new American flag flying in Mocksville. Several members of Oak Grove United Methodist Church were on hand June 10 when the Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary 75 of Davie County presented the flag - to be flown atop a newly erected pole beside the church's fellowship hall. Randall Manser (Pastor Randy) and his wife Linda are joining the Mocksville community as the pastoral family of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
