The follovrtng is a reprint of a memorial written by Homer Jenkins for "The Daily Mail", a newspaper in Hagerstown. Maryland: No greater gift can any man give than that he lay down his life to save that of another. On December 27, 1973, that is exactly what Barry H. Polls , did. ' Mr. Potts most undoubtedly ' knew at least 10 minutes before his plane crashed that it was going to come down and he ^ could have baited out at any ] given moment letting the plane j crash where it may, but not Mr. . Potts, knowing that he was . risking his own life he circled over our city three times searching for a place to come ' down where the least people (V no one would get hurl and he succeeded In doing Just that. This act certainly broadens my thoughts (hat the youth of lo^y are very considerate of others and very honorable people. Wouldn't it be so nice if all of us put other people first in all that we aay and do? So many people today think only of themselves, they are not con tent with their share but want other people's too. 1 feel so sorry for these kind of people, because I am a recovered alcoholic and for years I was so self-centered even to the extent of being greedy where a dollar was involved. I was out to get it, no matter, who, or how, and then one day I decided that was not (he way and I decided to get off the receiving end and get up front by giving. Today, materially I have nothing. But I don't need anything, my immediaie needs are being taken care of. Today. I have what money can not buy. I have peace of mind, happiness, contenimenl and pretty good health. DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD. THURSDAY. JANUARY 16, 1975 - 11 v> d. r o Fred P. Carter By Gordon Tomlinson first time I remember Fred P. Carter he was playing right field for the Mocksville semi-pro baseball team. The year was around 1936 or 36, and Fred had already graduated from the Mocksville High School. Some of the team mates of Fred on this team Included Ollie Anderson (deceased) first base; M. C. Peadmon and Lookabill, second base; Felix Deadmon, short stop; J. Lee Dwigglns (deceased) and Brcwaler Grant (deceased) third bese; Jake Allen (deceased) centerfietd. It was also around this time that Fred first entered the newspaper business, Joining the Mocksville Enterprise as a linotype operator. At that time the Mocksville ^lerprise was owned by A. C. Huneycutt of Albemarle. Miss Mary J. Hcilman was the social editor. In 1938, Fred as a 25-year-old employee of the Mocksville Enterprise, drove with A. C. Huneycutt to Kernersvilie to discuss with community leaders the possibility of starting a newspaper. They encountered enthusiasm for a community newspaper in Kemoravllle, with church leaders agreeing to sell 1,000 subscriptions and merchants agreeing to try advertising in It. On their way to Mocksville, Huneycutt asked Fred if he would like to go to Kernersvilie and operate the paper. Fred enthusiastically agreed. In Mocksville Fred had met, courted and married a pretty beautician from Catawba County, Ruth Smith. So It was this young couple that embarked on the project of establishing a weekly newspaper in Kernersvilie. In the beginning It was basically a one man operation, with the able assistance of his wife. However, as The Kernersvilie News led the way for growth and progress of the community the same growth and progress took place with the newspaper. Although always at heart a production man, Fred also assumed editorial responsibility. However, he never relinquished his love and devotion to the mechanical aide of putting out a newspaper. In 1961 the newspaper and printing company In Kernersvilie was incorporated under the name of Carter Publishing Company with Fred as president and Ruth, secretary-treasurer. Severed years ago he was joined in the venture by his son, Frederick. Also joining the company were such newsmen as Leonard Dudley and John Staples. Two or three years ago Fred and his newspaper joined the trend of switching to offset. As the Enterprise-Record had previously entered this field, he and Ruth visited our shop several limes to view our operation and discuss this new metlud of newspaper pi^uction. KernerBvllle made the switch and continued to produce one of the stale's outstanding weeklies, printing it at Eden. Having conslnieted a new and modem building, Fred and his staff began, about a month ago, the installation of a new oHsct press In Kernersvilie. Last Friday, January lOth, Fred telephoned me and for ten or fifteen minutes we ^scussed newspaper layout and printing. "When we get these new press units installed I will let you know and I want you to come over here and see our operation", said Fred in closing. To this 1 readily agreed. But Fred never lived to see his new press in q^ration. At 5 p.m. last Friday he suffered a heart attack and died. However, he leaves behind him a newspaper with an organization capable of carrying on his aims and Ideals of serving Kernersvilie and its people. This newspaper, which he organized, nursed and built and which has meant so much to Kernersvilie.......will always be a monument to his life and work. Fred was bom in Davle County on April 23, 1913 to Frank and Jennie Smith Carter. In Kernersvilie he was a member of the Lions Club, the Winston-Salem Moose Lodge, and was one of the leading organizers of the Kernersvilie Exchange CTub. MARCH 20. 1975 (Fat) Parker By Moriene Benson To know Grimes (Fat > Parker, Sr. was to love him. The sudden and tragic death of this fine man broughl considerable grief (o the little Ooolecmee community, which he loved. For many years this sports enlhusiasl participated in the local sports programs and later devoted a great deal of his time to working with young people In this neid. Sports was, in fact, a household word In the Paiiier home and one of many Interests shared by his entire family until the very day of his death. Those of us who were children and teenagers, especially during (he M's will long remember hfs devotion to (he local Recreation program for the youngsters. He coached ball teams, worked in the Recreation Center and any number of activities which kepi him involved with the young people. ke was a strong man with (he respect and admiration of ail who knew him • and yet, he was a gentle, understanding man. A loving husband, devoted father and a true friend to many, Pat Parker's death has caused much grief, but in relum, he has surely left behind an abvodance of precious memories. By Gordon Tomlinson My ac<tualntance and knowledge of Grimes Parker of Cooleemee goes back into the ino's. And, of course, lids involved athietJcs. "Pat" Parker, as he was known to so many, was an outstanding athlete at the Cooleemee High School. Only a few years my senior, I first watched him play and then played against him. He was a most outstanding athlete, especially in basketball and bsseball. At the completion of his high school career, he signed a profeaalonal baseball contract (1 believe with the Philadelphia Athletics). As s fireballing right-hander, he pitched for several years with various professional teams before suffering an injury to his arm. Returning to Cooleemee ho cMtlnued his active participation In both basketball and baseball with the semi-pro teams of that era through the 1940's and on into the 50'a. His love and dedication to sports was only naturally transmitted to his family. And. in (he IdSO's Ms daughttf sod two sons were carrying on the "Fats" Parker tradition as outstanding athletes. Although it Is always grievous to lose a husband, father. or friend the circumstance under which this departure is made should always be considered. No man loved sports any more than "Fats" Parker. It was most fitting that he was a particlpanl even through the final minutes of his life. r DAV1E COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD. I'd like to teU you just what 1 think of youl" With a most welcome greeting, Mr. Kenney Sedberry A huge smile came across his face as he continued to speak In his usual Jolly manner. "You know I've been ^Hr thinking," he said, "I'm getting 10 be an old man and I've had a ^||HH good life but I know I don't have many years left. And there is a •to lot of people around here who 1 really think a lot of, so I decided today was the day to tell them about it. I want them to know Just how I feel, so while I can, I'm gonna tell them myself." E.K, Sedberry That's Mr. Kenney - outspoken, honest, and always happy. He is certainly one of the most memorable "Faces of Cooleemee" He loved sports and never missed any of the liltte league or commuidty ballgames. His support was always inspiring to the players as well as the other spectators. One of his biggest thrills was arguing baseball (all In fun, of course) with many of his good friends, especially when the "Yankees" would loose, Along with his family, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, Mr, Kenney loved his church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for more than 28 years. Where ever he was, tic was capable of spreading Joy and happiness. His last days were spent in a nursing home, which he loved, and where he was given the kind of care he coidd not have had otherwise. His entire family and numerous friends spent a great deal of time there with him and were completely assured of his happiness. Mr. Kenney slipped out of this life Saturday afternoon into the new life he had been anticipating. And although we are not permitted to take anything with us. it is most important what we leave behind ... Mr. Kenney must surety have lived with this thought for his entire S8 years. This one little man left more joy and happiness than most people have in a life lime. DA VIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD. THURSDAY. MAY 29, 1975 - 15 t MltS.G^.SBLLLERS ' Mrs Vemb Hoover Sellers. He had previously served a six-year term (1924-1930). He returned to his post with the local REA Corporative in 1940 and led this organization into almost complete electrification of the six county area it served. But J. C.'s record of service and contributions is not just confined to his work in rural electrification. Anything that would benefit his county u-ould certainly find not only an avid supporter but a leader in J. C. Jones. It was J. C. that led the Tight for the Davie County Hospital. He, with the help of others, organized (he effort that resulted in the county passing the necessary tax and bond measure that created the Davie County Hospital. And he was active in other phases of the county activity. He wos instrumental in the adoption of a county court system for Davie: he served on a committee that helped many tenant farmers in Davie secure loans throu^ (he fcdcrnl government. At the dinner honoring J. C. on his retirement, Gwyn Price, Chairmon of the North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority told the gathering:' "J. C.
