The funeral was held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Bearden, pastor and the Rev. Ed Cantor. Burial was in the church cemetery with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Spencer Lodge No. 543. , ^ , Bom Sept. 26, tei4. in Davie County, Mr. Smoot was a son of the iate Robert Lee and Mattie Eaton Smoot. He was educated in the Oavie County schools and for 43 years was associated with ttte N.C. Finishing Company where he was department manager of the synthetic dye department. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he taught and served as superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Smoot was also a member of the Spencer Masonic Lodge 543. was a Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Oasis Shrine Club of Charlotte and the Rowan County Shrine Club, was a charter member of the Yadkin Lions Club which combined with the Spencer Lions Club, of which he was a past president. His first wife. Julia Margaret Leonard Smoot, died on Oct. 6.1962. Survivors include his second wife, Betty McMillan Smoot, whom he married November of 1964; two dau^ters. Mrs. Martha S. Swin of Raleigh and Mrs. Margaret S. Waddell of Spencer; two brothers. Cedric Smoot of Mocksvilie and John R. Smoot of Westchester, N.V.: one sister. Mrs. Madeline Sparks of Far> mington; and three grand- diiidren. WILLIAM JAY SMITH .. William Jay Smith, 67, of Route 1, Harmony, died June 28th at 11:00 p.m. at the Baptist Hospital in Winston- Salem following a len^hy illness. He was born July 31.1911, in Davie County and was a son of the late James Augustus and Bessie Smith. He was also a retired farmer. Surviving are his wife. Camilla Blalock.Smith; three daughters. His formal education consisted of common school and an equivalent of iwo years of high school. At the age of 18 he went to work In Wlnslon-Salem at Arista Mills. After a short time In Winalon-Salem he ac cepted a Job in a small country store In Surry County. This job proved vei7 eventual for Haire as he made acquQlntanceB with o lot of young folks ona customera who became his friends. Also. It was white woHcIng in this store that he decidt-Kl he would like to learn telegraphy. John Haire procured two glass jars, two copper crow feel, some blue stone....and by filling the jars with water nnH hanging the copper feet therein, (he so-called wet batteries generated enough electric current to manlpuiotc a small tclegroph practice set. Realizing he needed a lot of practice and personal instruction, this youth prevailed on the railroad agent at Crulchfield to allow him to enter the station as a student-helper, and without pay of course. The agent accepted him and in November I9il he entered Into this field. In March 1912, the agent at Rockford. C.A. Houch. was accidentally shot and was partially disabled for some months. Needing someone around the station with the privilege of learning telegrai^y and station accounting, the Job was offered John Haire. The pay was his room, board and laundry... and was gladly accepted On August 12.1912, although yet not a good telegrapher. John Haire decided it was time for him to try for a job with some railroad. He decided to go to Rocky Mount and try to get on with the Atlantic Coastline. Enroule he stopped In Wlnslon-Salem and asked the chief dispatcher, 6. P. Ketcham, for work. Following an examination on rules, telegraphy. etc. John Haire was llned-up for a job as relief-telegrapher. The next week he was sent to Belhania, a small station north of Winston-Salem, and relieved the regular ogeni who wanted some lime off After several such relief Jobs, here and there, a vacancy occurred at Crul chfield and John Haire became agent there on January I. 1913. He held this position until December 1,1923, when he bid In the Job at Mocksvllla succeeding G.A. Allison who had decided to take the newly created position of clerk- telegrapher at the same station. John Haire served as agent ct the Mocksville depot for 40 yeorsand retired In 1083 after 50 years of continuous service with Southern Railway. For the past is years John Haire has devoted himself to his family, hobbies and friends. He enjoyed gardening end fishing. William Forrest, 52, of Advance, Rt. 1, apparently waa driving a tractor when itwent into a lake near the golf courseclubhouse about 1 p.m. Sunday. A golfer found Forreat unconscious utider water and worked to revive him until rescue workers arrived shortly after 1. Dr. L. W. Stringer, a county medical examiner, dlrectM rescue efforts at the lake until Forreat could be taken to the hospital. He waa treated in theemergency room before being tran sferred to the intensive-care unit lateSunday. Stringer said Forrest may have suffered a stroke shortly before theaccident. NOVEMBER 23. 1978 Mrs. Margaret Gregory Is Killed In Freak Accident In Rowan A Davie County woman was Mlied Saturday In Rowan County In a freak accident just off U.S. 601 about 1.6 miles north of the Salisbury city llmila. Trooper Glenn M. Hester of the Rowan Unit of the N. C. Highway Patrol identified the idctlm as Mrs. Margaret Broadway Gregory, 62. of Rt. 4. Box 52, Mocksville. The patrolman said Mrs. Gregory was driving a 197B Ford four-wheel drive vehicle north on Highway 601. According to an eyewitness at the 2:20 p.m. accident, as told to the inveaUgatlng of- ficer, Mrs. Gregory pull^ the vehicle off the highway onto Rural Paved Road 1929 and stopped. She got out of the vehicle and walked around in front of it to the passenger side's door. She opened the door and then shut it. When Mrs. Gregory shut the door, according to the eyewitness, the vehicle began to roll backwards. She ran to the rear of the vehicle and it ran over her. Mrs. Gregory was tran sported to the Rowan Memorial Hospital by C & M Ambulance, and was dead on arrival. The vehicle Mrs. Gregory was driving was reportedly a Ford Bronco. Unconfirmed reports in dicated that the victim's husband theorized that his wife had stopped to shut the Mrs. Gregory door which apparently was not securely fastened, and that when she shut the door it threw the vehicle Into gear. Also, unconfirmed reports indicated that Mrs. Gr^oiy tried to stop the vehicle with her hands. Friends of the family said that Mrs. Gregory had been to Salisbury to bring her mother, who had been living with her for a time, for a stay with another daughter here. She was on her way back home when (he accident occurred. The funeral was held Monday In No Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Davle County. Kavanagh Dr. William Paul Kavanagh, 69. of D«107. Spanish Arms Apta., Salisbury, a practicing physician In this area for 40 years, died at 2:90 a.m. Saturday in the Rowan Memorial Hoepltal. He had been disabled since 1973 and seriously lU for over three weeks. The funeral was conducted Monday at 11 a.m. In The First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John S. Carothers, associate pastor, and Father Thomas P. Clements of Snored Heart Catholic Church. Burial was In Rowan Memorial Park. He was bom August 18,1909 In Jamestown, N.C., son of the late William end Anna Elisabeth Anderson Kavans^. He received his early education at Roosevelt High School. Seattle, Wash., and was graduated from Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ui. Dr. Kavanagh was graduated from the Duke University Medical School and interned in Highland Park, Mich. He was assistant resident at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and was resident at Watts Hospital In Durham. He started the general graduated from 'the Duke University Medical School and Interned In Highland Park, Mich. He was assistant resident at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and was resident at Watts Hospital in Durham. He started the general practice of medicine in Cooleemee In 1938 and In May, 1942, entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He served four years, two overseas with the 38th Evacuation Unit Hospital, and was discharged in May. 1946, with the rank of major. He returned to Cooleemee and resumed his practice. In 1957. he began general practice and anesthcsiology in Salisbury and Spencer and he continued this until his disability retirement January 1, 1973. Dr. Kavanagh was a member of numerous medical groups and organizations. He was on the staff and served as chief of Staff of Rowan Memorial Hospital in 1958 and was a past president of the Rowan>Davie Medical Society. The well known physician was also a member of the following organizations: Phi Chi, medical fraternity; American Medical Association: N.C. State DR. WM. P. KAVANAGH Medical Society; charter member of (he RowaO'DavIe Chapter of the American Academy of General Practice and a former president; American Society of Anesthealology: a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists; Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. He was also medical director of (he First Protection Life Insurance Co. He also served as assistant Academy of General Practice and e former president; American Society of Anestheslology; a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists; Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. He was also medical dirMtor of (he First Protection Uh Insurance Co. He also served as assistant Rowan County coroner for a number of years and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Kavanagh was twice married, first to the former Ruth G. O'Brien, who preceded him In death. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rella F. Park Kavagh, to whom he was married March 31, 1959; two sons, William P. Kavanagh Jr. of Hacienda Heights, Calif, and John Kenneth Kavanagh of Wheaton, III.; two daughters. Miss Eleanor Ruth Kavanagh of Durham and Mrs. Catherine O'Brien Julian of Providence Country, Salisbury; three step daughters, Mrs. Carolyn VonBromer of KIngsport, Tenn., Mrs. Suzanne P. Helen Avetl DeVito was held Sunday at* ternocm, 3 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church ^ Modcsvllle. Mrs. DeVlto died Friday night in the emergency room of the Davie County Hospital. Althott^ terminally afflicted, the suddenness of her death was unexpected. As per her request, the body was cremated and wiil ha interred beside her father in Rose Cemetery. The memorial service Sunday was conducted by the Rev. George Auman. Pastor of the First United Church of Mocksville, and Dr. Henry C. Sprinkle, a long*time family acquaintance and friend. Mr. Auman was In charge of the service and presented ap propriate scriptures and prayers. Dr. Sprinkle eulogised Mrs. DeVito, outlining her ac- compllstments and influence towards the betterment of mankind. Mrs. Helen Avett DeVito was bom in Haywood County, the daughter of the Rev. E.M. and A^e Tucker Avett. She was a graduate of the Cor nelius mgh School, attended Brevard College, and graduated from Greensboro College with an AB degree. She received her master's degree from the American University of Washington, D.C. and <ud further study at the University of North She received her master's degree from the American University of Washington, D.C. and did further study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbia University. During World War II she served in the European Theatre of Op^tions with the American Red Cross. She later became the first woman director of Youth of the American Red Cross in New York City, and later a reading supervisor for the New Yoric City Schools. She was a member of the National Business and Professional Women's Association of New York City; a member of the Mocksville Woman's Club; and a trustee of Brevard College. She also served as historian for the Mocksville Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Arlen J. DeVito of Mocksville; a sister, Mrs. Henry Cole Tomllnson of Mocksville; three brothers. DECEMBER 21. 1978 Frank Norman Found Dead In Bathtub Of His Apartment Law orricials were rep6rtedty In* veatigatlng thiaweek into the probi&lUty of one or more persons having been with Frank Norman on or about Dacamber 10th or Mlh, Norman, 28, of MockavlUe Hi. 1, was found dead In his duplex apartment off Sanford Avenue December I3lh. The bcxiy was In the bathtub which was partially filled with water. The body was sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. The time of death was set at Monday, December nth. The exact cause of death was not announced by local law officials. Norman, a paraplegic, lived alone in his apartment. It was reported that his mother, Mrs. George Norman of Ad vance, went to the Davie County Sheriff's office on December 13th to report her son missing. Fred Pratt, administrative officer for the sheriff's department, sold that while Mrs. Norman was in his office a report was received from authorities In Win- ston-Salcm that a car, identified as belonging to Norman, had been found off the Old Lexington Road in Forsyth Couniy. The cor was locked and keys were on (he back scat. Soon after this, a friend and neighbor of Norman's who had also become concerned otMUt him, went to Norman's apartment and found the body in the bathtub. The State Bureau of Investigation wos called in to assist in the investigation. Authorities reportedly found no outward evidence of foul play. However, there was a sink full of dirty dishes in dicating that others may have been at the apartment over that weekend. Also, Norman's wheel chair and clothes were found a considerable distance away from (he bathtub. A fire had been burning in the fireplace and smouldering log had been removed apparently from the flames and laid on Frank Norman the hearth. The funeral for Norman was con ducted Sunday (December 17) at Eaton's Funeral Home by the Rev. Norman Fryc. Burial was in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Lexington.
