The denomination sponsors a teen talentcompetitionannually.according to group director Susan Shortt. Over the years several teens from Redland Church had participated in the musical portion but never in drama - until church member David Owens approached Shortt about trying to raise interest. The drama group started out small. But. in its first year of competition, Redland had two teens to win at the district level and one to advance to national competition. : Performing a monologue called "Somewherein Between" aboutachild of divorce, Grace Milsap, 14, com peted inthenational teen talentevenlin Arlington, Texas in August. She was the youngest competitor in her cat- - egory, Shortt said. ! • Corrie Robertson, ajunior at Davie High, would also have advanced to the national competition, if not for a time limit technicality. Robertson performed "TheTouch", a monologue about a Biblical charac ter who is healed by Jesus after 12 years of sickness, Shortt said. • The success Robertson and Milsap experienced sparked an interest in the drama program. The group now has 18 teen members, she said. More than preparing for teen talent competitions,thegroup8tays busy serv ing the church. Now working on an illustrative ser mon about the tribulation called "Don't Be Caught Sleeping" to be performed Oct. 27, they practice every Wednes- • day evening. They plan to combine the regular sermon with acting and special effects, she said. , Following that program, they will begin working on projects forThanks giving and Christmas. After those ef forts. they will start preparing for teen competition, Shortt said. > In between large projects, they regu larly perform small pieces for the con- gregation-alldirectly Biblically based or with a positive message. "As soon as we finish one up, we start a new one," Short! said. The programhasbeen well-received in the church. Everyone who has been asked to participate in productions has been willing to help, she said. In addition toMilsap and Robertson, members ofthe drama group are Brian Bost, Will Grimes. Colonel Jack Kelley (retired) will speak at the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church on Sunday, Nov. 10 For more Kelleyservesas Kelley thegeneraldirectorofmen'sministries of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is a graduate of The Citadel and Jalereamed master's degrees from both American and Central Michigan uni versities. He and his wife, Lynn, are members of Northwood Temple Church, where he served on the church staff five years. In December, 1979 he retired from the U.S. Army, after 20 years of ser vice. Hecommanded parachute infan try units at platoon, company, and bat talion levels. His last two assignments were as a battalion commander in the 82nd Airborne Division and finally; as deputy commander, 5th special forces ("Green Berets"). Kelley was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star for valor, and the Purple Heart. In 1978 he received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sure, he likes Christmas. It brings in extra shoppers to his toy store, and extra dollars into his pocket. But somewhere along the line, Calvin Shepherd lost the true meaning of Christmas. It would take an angel to -bring that meaning back. Brad Wombaugh, who plays the role of Calvin's son, says it's on one of those trips back in time when Calvin accidentally breaks Baby Jesus in a manger scene. "That's symbolic of the whole stoiy," Wombaugh said. "He thought he was trying to put Jesus back to gether, but really, he was trying to bring his life back together." "It's almost to the point Christ is put on the back bumer, and without him, there would be no holiday," Garraghty said. "It took Calvin a while to realize that" While the play has a serious mean ing, there are some funny moments. Ken Brownlow said, like the time Calvin goes back to the fifth grade to recite the Christmas story from the Bible. "He has to re-live being humili ated," Brownlow said. "He makes a disgusting shamble ofthe whole thing. It's riotous. There will be people,roll ing in the floors." Drama has become a big part of Redland's ministry. "There's a lot of talent built up in the church," Brownlow said. "It's a big^ part of the ministry of this church." ; Wombaugh added: "We believe, that through drama, we can reach out to people who may not otherwise come to church. Twelve Davie CJounty teenagers in the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Giurch drama tetim "Inner Mission" recently competed in a national com petition in Ashev ille. Two members of the team brought home first place trophies for their per formances. In the audib le individual competi tion, Dan Faill won first place for his performance a-s an old man who leads a teenager to fChrist during a comedic car ride in a piiece called "Kids These Days". Winning first place in the individual mime category was Zach Wagner for "Keep Your Eyes on Jesus", the story of Peter when Jesus walked on the water. The skit included comedy as Peter was tossed about the boat and watched his friends jump overboard in fear. The skit ends with Peter pulled &om the water by Jesus after falling in. Both were original skits prepared by Inner Mission co-directcars Susan Shorn and Brad Wombaugh. The entire group participated in a pantomime called "The Flames Passes On" that shows how the flame is passed from generation to generation, starting with the crucifixion of Christ and end ing in a modem day high school where teenagers face peer pressure. The group also performed an au dible skit called "Crucified Again" in which Jesus is crucified by a teenager who becomes distracted by the bad influences around her. By the time the group arrived at the competition, Wagner said he felt a lot closer to God and everyone in the group than he had in months leading up to the national event There were times that it was hard to get the whole group together for prac tice, but they pulled together like one big family for nationals. Everyone had a great time, Faill said. "God has given everyone in Inner Mission a talent that we can use to spread the meskge of the Lord," he said. Inner Mission competed against more than 25 teams from around the country. Other competitions included creative writing, drawing, painting and music. The event also featured contempo rary Christian bands and youth speak ers. Faill is the son of Jon Faill of Ten nessee and Kim Sees of Concord. He is a freshman at UNC-Wilmington. Wagner is the son of Anita andTom Wagner of Advance. He is a senior at Davie High School. Other participants include Kiristin Clement, Will Grimes, Tina Harkness, Jeremy Miller, Grace Millsap, Chris Munden, Brandon Owens, Chris Riddle, Corrie Robertson and Crystal Robertson. Despite warnings from his friends -to leave that lifestyle alone, a young .'man wants to find out what's on the rpther side of the bridge. There he finds ;£ricohol, drugs, sex and eventually the 'death of a friend. When he wants to return to Christian life, hediscovcis the bridge is gone. To raise money for this year's com petition the group held a car wash and a lasagna dinner and received a love offering from the church. The group, which meets at Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.. is also seeking new members. "Innermission is open to anyone in the community who shares our vision of teaching others about the love of Christ through drama." Shortt said, Though he stresses that Innermission is open to the commu nity. -IS the group's sponsor, his church ispruudoflnnermission's accomplish ments. said Pastor Joel Boyles. "But I'm even more impressed with their ministry. People from all over the state have been blessed by their minis try." he said. "It has been a great bless ing to our church." Drama is agood ministry for young people, and the members of Innermission do it well, he said. In addition to participating in com petitions. the group has also prepared skits for Children's Church and Vaca tion Bible School, he said. The drama team won second place with "Witness Protection Program." a comedy on how not to witness faith.in Christ to non- Christians. The piece showcased the tal ent of Whitney Lutz as the wit ness and Chris Munden as her mentor. She ties up checker play ers Ryan Kildoo and Mike Fissel for not paying attention to her message. She "Bible Beats" Jor dan and Keli Mulder for being more interested in each other than the truth she is trying to show them. Kasey Robinson has a mime squirt gun fight with Whitney over her witnessing tactics. With each failure, Chris coaches Whitney on what to do. Rnally. she meets Daniel Caner. takes on his burdens as her own and leads him to Christ. Daniel Carter placed third with the piece "Sergeant Saul's March on Damascus." a mime piece without music or vocals, an inspirational visual drama about Saul's conversion to faith in Christ on the road to Dam ascus as told in Acts 9. Origi nally conceived and directed by Susan Shortt, it was the group's sixth consecutive year in na tional competition.
