It was built adjacent to the Poplar Springs Methodist Church because the church v/as becoming over crowded, especially during the Revival Season. V.fith the erection of the arbor, the church ground took on an entirely different atmosphere. Coupled with the enthusiasm and activities of the young folk was the religious fervor of the old folk praising the Lord while listening to the interpre tation of the Holy Bible. Families came from miles and miles by horses and buggies with their tents which they pitched on the camp ground. They brought all of their animals with them horses, mules, cov;s, chickens, cats and dogs, etc. Each day at a specific time. Uncle Lewis Ijames would sound the trumpet (cow's horns) to summon the peole from the tents to the arbor for worship. It v/as almost considered a sin and a crime for anyone to be caught in a tent or outside the arbor. The camp ground had to be clear after the "trumpet call." Meetings lasted several days usually from Wednesday through early Sunday evening and featured daily open-air s 6 rvi c 0 s • About 1922 the massive stream of campers began to dv/indle and sometimes in the 30's tents v/ere no longer seen. Messrs. Asbury Studevent, Daniel Wilson, Counsil Dwiggins, and Ed Holman, offsprings of the original founders, decided to reorganize to preserve the tradition. Services were to be held one Sunday out of the year. V The last service was held i n September of 1987 under i the leadership of the following trustees: Mr. David Lee Sharoe, Mr. Alton Gaither, Sr., Mr. Ben Wilson, the late- Mrs. Margaret Banes Studevent, Treasurer; and Mrs. Marcella Lewis, Secretary. « Since that time the old arbor was further damaged by ^ HUGO, but plans will soon be made to renovate the 100 '3 plus structure and again congregate for Christian unity and (NI Fellowship.
