The ' Cathedral Choir of G o 1 e r Metropolitan AME Zion Church of Winston-Salem will give the music. The Rev. 0. J. Dawkins is host pastor. The Advance church opened its new modem $27,000 struc ture on April 10 only a few feet from the old plant which . had served the cpngregation since 1883. The new building includes the sanctuary and an educa tional wing. It also include the pastor's study, a choir room and vestibule. ^ Walls, elevated to bishop in 1924, is also bishop of the Blue Ridge Conference and the Western New York Confer ence. He has been honored several times for his church leadership. He has promoted the church in establishing two summer camps, rebitilding the Harriet Tubman Home in Au burn, N. Y., and building new. churches throughout the dis tricts. He is a member of the Ecumenical Conference of the National Council of Churches and a member of the World Council of Churches. AME Zlon Church near Advance. Mrs. Atha Allen, president of the Advance Organization, turned the first earth. Construction of the much- needed building is being made possible through the cooperative efforts of many people. First, the land was donated. Secondly, Yadkin V^ey Economic Development District, Inc., awarded the group an incentive grant of $1,000. Finally, the community residents themselves are hard at work conducting fund^-aising projects to help finance the proposed building. This photograph was made in 1950 of the second church located on the Peoples Creek Road near Ad vance. The church pictured above was built in 1925 and used until 1966 when vacated for a newer modern struc ture. The old church collapsed in the 1970s during a thunderstorm. Church To Hold 12 Tribes Rally Mount Sinai AME Zion Church will hold a Twelve Tribes Rally on Sunday, Oct. 26. The speaker for the 11 a.m. service will be Benjamin S. Ruffin vice presi dent, corporate affairs, RJ. Reynolds Tobacco Company Winston-Salem. Ruffln joined the RJR corporate affairs staff in 1986 as a director and was appointed a vice president in 1989. Ruffin is a renowned public speaker, and more often than not his message reflects his own background and p»- sonal experience. "It's not where you are from, it is where you are going.
