PiTiiA 4200 Wauu Bono CM44L0TTI, R C My dear Miss Martin: Since I received your kind letter of May 21, I have been doing a lot of reading, cl^ecklng and searching In the Lutheran Archives at Salisbury to see what we might have about the old Lutherans on Dutchmans Greek In Davie County, formerly Rowan County, Frankly, we do not have much. This Is another case where this thing we call history was neglected during the old days and now It Is very difficult to untangle the records, If we can find any such things. It is different now. We now have a complete record of all things that goes on# I You tell me about the stone wall around^ the grave yard at New Jerusalem. That Is interesting and this Information fits exactly with our record. . - At a meeting of the North Carolina lutheran Synod, held, on Wednesday August 23, 1871 at Old Pllgrams Lutheran Church In Davidson County, they talked about the Church property and grave yard at New Jeru;salem In Davle County. Since the Church had moved away, a Committee was appointed and directed to sell and dispose of the Church property there, except the grave yard which was not to be sold. The Committee was directed to use the money that they received from the sale to flit up and preserve the grave yard. This Information Is' recorded In the minuted of the meeting of the Synod. - \ The following year and on August 21, 1872 the Synod met again at Organ (2;ion) Lutheran Church In Rowan County, 8 miles east of Salisbury and this Committee reported to the Synod that n they had sold the Church property on Dutchmans Creek, or the Heldelburg property as directed for the sum of $ 300.00 and the money had been used to erect a stone wall around the grave yard there# This Is recorded In the minutes# This glved you an idea how the stone wall got there. The Congregation as orglnally founded and organized and known as Heidelberg or Duchmans Creek was not organized by the Lutherans and the Lutherans do not claim this was done by the Lutherans, although It Is known that a number of German Lutherans were there and were among the first members. There is nothing in the Lutheran records, which give any evidence as to the date: the Church was organized, but from the little information that we do have it appeans that it was soon after 1760. There appears a record of baptisms starting as early as 1766. It appears that a Hev• Valentine Beck and a young man by the name Paul Henkel were the leaders when the Church was first started. This Paul Henkel was born and reared there on Dutchmans Creek. He was later educated and ordained as a Lutheran Minister and was the first of the long list of Lutheran Pastors there. 1 i It further appears that the Church was originally organized, or he had the leading part in such organization, by Rev. George Soelle, a Moravian and he preached there from 1765 until 1778. Then he was I followed by Revs. Wartmann and Rev. Richard IJtley, Moravians. I From 1775 until 1785 our records are blank. We have nothing, but it does appear that the German Reformed Church got interested and they j had several preachers working there. I tried to get something from I the Archives of the Reformed Church at Catawba College, but they have nothing. I After Paul Henkel who was'one of your local boys from your community got himself prepared, educated and ordained as a Lutheran Minister, he got the work on Dutchmans Creek started again which continued very well until 1925. I can give you a lot of information about this Rev. Paul Henkel in the event you want it. There is a lot about him in the Lutheran Archives. tell me that you had an old Church on Hunting Creek. Please tell more about this. I find no record in the Lutheran Archives about any Church named Hunting Creek. Was this a Lutheran Church? Did it have another nameT I do not fina it on our index. Cpuld that have IcueK&U k deen a part of the Dutchmans Creek Church? "V* I plan to drive over to Mocksville the first chance I get. I would like to get some of the names from the old gravestones so I can check the origin of these old people and find where they came from and while there I would like to talk with you about these things.I ^ In the meantime I would like to have a reply from you telling me Qt how wrong we are about these things. You are there and I am sure you ^ know more about these things then we do. 3 UJ 2 1 2 d X KD U> X o d, 3: CJ With kindest regards and best wishes, I am, Davie Co. Public Library Mocksville, N. G.
