NC J- <5 i cP <r (T THE STORY OF CORNATZER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH I - s 0 1 In the year 1902 a small group of people of the Cornatzer Community bought a house near the pr^nt Comatzer-Dulin Fire Department and organized the Cornatzer Methodist Church. Rev. M. H. Vestal became the pastor, and Mr. Tom Cornatzer was named Sunday School Superinten dent after the organization of the church. Follow ing Mr. Vestal as pastors of the church were: Rev W. M. Curtis, Rev. C. S. Patrick, Rev. L. L. Smith and a Rev. Ferrington. In 1911 Mr. Ance Cornatzer gave an acre of land located three-tenths of a mile north of the present church on which to build a church. The old house in which the church was first organized was torn down, moved, and rebuilt at the new loca tion. This church was finished in 1914. Rev. J. M. Vamer was pastor, and Mr. Frank Bailey was Sun- ^y School Superintendent at this time. Following Mr. Verner as pastors of the church were: Rev. E. Myere, Rev. Snow, Rev. J. H. Brendall, Rev. W. M. Rathburn, Rev. F. E. Howard, Rev. P. L. Smith, Rev. J. C. Gentry, Rev. Trollinger, Rev. L. l' Lyerly, and Rev. Foster Loflin. In 1950 The Late Albert E. Bowens pur- c a^ 2.4 acres of land and gave it to Cornatzer Methodist Church for the purpose of building a new church. In October of 1950, a meeting of the con^egation was held at the old church and a ui ing committee was nominated and elected by the congregation. The building of the present -J™ 1^51 and completed in B w,'...® was dedicated in 1954 whileKev. Wdliam Anderson was pastor. Following as ^tors were: Rev. D. D. Broome, Rev. Cameron Dobson, and Rev. Carl Lain. During the time Rev. "m was here, the new educational building was ^Mrted, and was completed in 1966 while Rev. orrest Church was minister. Following Rev. ^urch as pastors were: Rev. Dwight Ludwig, Rev. ®*' ^®®'' Gfbs and«ev. isiii Farmer. OAVIE CO. Three of our members have gone on to become minis- tere: Rev. Derry Bamhardt; Rev. Bob Whitaker; and Rev. Kermit Shoaf. &me early members of the church were: Joined in 1902 - Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cornatzer; Ida Jane McDaniel Handrix; and Mr. and Mrs. Qcero hmith Joined in 1904 - Mrs. Agnes McDaniel; Mr. and Mm. R. A. Bowens; Frank Bailey; Sallie Naih and Minnie McDaniel Melton. Mr. George McDaniel joined in 1909 and Jessie Cornatzer and Mr. Jack Jones joined in 1911. Mrs. Stella Hendrix IS our oldest living church member at this time. • I Sunday School Superintendents haveincluded: Garland Bowens; Kermit Shoaf, Derry Barnhanlt; Alvin Whitaker; Boh Hayes; Tim Allen; Boh Whitaker; and Mr. Boh Powe who is our present Superintendent. xj Treasurers of the church have included:Harold and Reba Frank; Sandra Whitaker; Paul ine and Hathan Allen; and Garnette Nance. Luvada Wisecarver is our present Treasurer. During the past year, the church pews have bwn padded and covered. This project was a joint effort by all members of the church and by per sons who have loved ones who were or are church members. All pews were donated in honor of in memory of loved ones. Also during 1986, Mr. Bob Powe became a Certified Lay Speaker. Some donations to the church from members have included: an acre of land adjoining church property by Garland Bowens, who also donated an organ for the sanctuary. Pulpit set by Albert E. ^wens family; Communion cloths by the Adult Sun^y School Class; Baptismal Bowl by Dot and p)b Hayes; Piano for the Fellowship Hall by Paul ine and Hathan Allen; Carpet for the parsonage by Lucille and Spurgeon Foster.
