Vada Beck. Lewis Beck, Brad Holhman (minister). Dr. Micheal Leathenwood, district superinten dent of the Western NO Conference. Patrick Shore and Hannah Shore. Union Chapel Breaks Ground On Church Improvements On Jan 27 Union Chapel United Methodist Church held a wor ship celebration which concluded with a groundbreaking ceremony. Those participating included Ruby Boger. one of the oldest at- tending members; Vada Beck, finance committee chain Uwis Bec^ building committee chair: the Rev. Brad Holhman. Dr. M>che^ Leatherwood. superintendantof the Lexington Distnct of the West ern North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Patrick Shore, the youngest member; and Hannah Shore, the young est preparatory member. On April 1. the church will begin construction on a new portico and handicap ramp. In addition, the vestibule will be renovated, the sanctuary will be revitalized with new carpet and pew cushions. A paved driveway and parking area will complete the project. Martin Heritage Printers, Charlotte, North Carolina, 1957 UNION CHAPEL METHODIST CHURCH In 1859 the "Trustees of the Methodist Protestant Church on the main road from Mocksville to Wilkesboro" were deeded three acres of land by John Cheshire. The log church built on this lot served Union Chapel until about 1895 when a frame church was built. This was replaced in 1952 with a brick building. According to a Minute Book of Quarterly Conferences of the Mocksville Circuit, Methodist Protes tant Churches in the Circuit in 1867 were: Union Chapel, Pleasant Grove, Dutch Meet ing House and Turrentine. The Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Church is the custodian for any property or real estate owned by the church. The Chairperson of the Board of Trust ees is also a member of the Administrative Board. Therefore, the following resolu tions and rules were approved by the Administrative Board of Union Chapel United Church on May 4» 1975» I. Anything that the church decides upon for the betterment of the church property, the trustees will try to carry out the wishes of the church. II, The church shall not be responsible for any monuments or articles left on any grave in the cemetery. Ill, Anyone desiring a plot or grave shall be asked to abide by the rules govern ing use of the cemetery: 1- First grave 4 feet from the edge of marker on North Line to center of the grave. 2- All other graves should be 5 fest apart center to center, 5- Row line to be on center of north row» marker to center of south row ' marker, 4- Graves to be dug 2 feet from row line, 5- Vest side of the headstones are to be in line with center of north and south row markers, 6- Six Inches of concrete to be poured around all headstones even with the ground, and all footstones should be flush with the ground. graves are to be seeded with Kentucky 31 Fescue, No sand or gravel to be used on graves. Grass sod must be replaced whenever possible, 8- No new flowers or shrubs are to be planted in either cemetery after May 4» V 1975. 9- All graves are to be selected in consecutive order from north side, ^ 10- If plot niarkers are used they must be flush with the ground, 11- Anyone working in the cemetery may remove withered or bad looking flowers, 12- Any future burials must be under the ground. ^ 15- No new curbs or rails chj focl^'tenea are to be put in the old or new parts of the cemetery after this date of May 41 1975. ^ ^14- The Board of Trustees should place some standard markers to the graves —<v that have none. The church does not sell nor intend to sell plots to its members, but any ^ donation given for the upkeep of the cemetery shall be greatly appreciated. Members of Union Chapel Church or members of the church school and their immediate families are eligible to be buried in the cemetery. The Church School Superintendent, Chairperson of the Administrative Board, Chairperson of the Trustees, and the Pastor will cooperate in determining whether or not a non-member is a member of the church school.
