(1) THE PIEDMONT DANIEL BOONE 250th ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE: Tax Exempt Status
A. Daniel Boone arrived in the Forks of the Yadkin - North Carolina
Piedmont - as a youth in his late teens. Already a skilled marksman when
he arrived it was in the Piedmont that he developed and perfected his
skill as a hunter; and as a hunter, he explored the vast area of the
Piedmont and Appalachian Mountains. It was in the Forks of the Yadkin
that he married Rebecca Bryan, and here his sons -James and Israel were
born ( both of whom were to die at the hands of Indians). And it was
from the Forks of the Yadkin in the North Carolina Piedmont that he set
forth on his explorations of distant Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and
Kentucky. After the sale of the Boone Tract on Bear Creek in Davie
County, North Carolina, he moved his family in stages from the Forks of
the Yadkin to Boonesborough, Kentucky.
B. The objective of the Piedmont Committee for the 250th Anniversary
of Daniel Boone's Birth - 22 October 1984 - is to determine how to com-
memorate the years Daniel Boone and his family spent in the North Carolina
Piedmont.
C. To ensure tax exempt status for contributions to enable this
committee to fund a variety of commemorative efforts, it is necessary
to establish a non-profit corporation in accordance with the laws of
the State of North Carolina.
D. The purpose of such a corporation: To determine the nature of
commemorative efforts in the North Carolina Piedmont. To stimulate and
where necessary, to fund the variety of efforts to commemorate the 250th
birthday of Daniel Boone - a Piedmont Pioneer who lived in the Piedmont
when it was the western -most frontier of English Colonial America.
E. Duration of the Corporation: From October 1983 through October
1984.
(2) BOON E'S LIFE IN NORTH CAROLINA
A. Distribution of Boone Biographies to school and county libraries:
1. "The Life and Adventures of Daniel Boone"
Michael A. Lofaro - The University Press of Kentucky
2. "Daniel Boone: Wilderness Scout"
Stewart Edward White - Lightyear Press (reprint)
3. "The Long Hunter, A New Life of Daniel Boone"
Lawrence Elliott - Beekman Press (reprint)
4. "Daniel Boone: Taming the Wild"
Katherine E. Wilkie - Garrod Publishing Co.
5. "Daniel Boone,Backwoodsman: The Green Hills Were His Portion"
John J. and Ina W. Van Noppen - Appalachian Consortium
6. "Daniel Boone: Master of the Wilderness"
John Bakeless - Stackpole Company
B. Lectures and conferences:
1. Schools:
a., North Carolina History Week in Public Schools
b. Junior and Senior High School History Clubs
2. Adult Groups:
Community Group Meetings
(3) D A N I E L B 0 0 N E: EXPERT MARKSMAN & SKILLED HUNTER
To commemorate Daniel Boone's most famous skill - his great
skill with a gun - it is proposed that there be a Turkey Shoot
on Saturday the 20th of October 1984, limited to muzzle -loading
black powder long rifles, either antique or modern. Rain Date:
the following Saturday, 03 November 1984.
Gray Bagshaw, a member of the Mocksville Police Department has
been contacted and he, in turn, has contacted the National Rifle
Association for an instructional kit on the management of this
type of Shooting Match. Planning for this Daniel Boone 1984
Turkey Shoot will conform to the instructions from the National
Rifle Association.
(4) PIONEER FLAVOR FOR ARTS -CRAFTS FAIRS
Every year there is an outdoor ARTS ALIVE FAIR in downtown area of
Mocksville. There is also a Crafts Fair held annually in the
Mocksville National Guard Armory.
In 1984 both of these events could be given an emphasis on
OLD TIMEY and/or PIONEER crafts. Any effort will be co-ordinated
with the Committee for the 400th Anniversary of English Settlement
in North Carolina.
(5) LOG CAB IN
A. Logs from the following decaying structures have been offered
to the Committee for the 400th Anniversary of EnglishoSettle-
ment of North Carolina:
1. log cabin
2. log barn
B. Suggested site for the erection of a "pioneer type" log
cabin from the logs from these structures still in good
condition: Rich Park in Mocksville, North Carolina, where
there will be both frequent inspection by the park staff,
and repairs made as needed.
(6) OTHER SUGGESTIONS
A. THE DANIEL BOONE TRAIL
1. The Daniel Boone Trail - a route from the North Carolina
Piedmont to the blue grass paradise of Kentucky - was fdirst an idea in
the brain of Daniel Boone, who by 1773 had explored much of the vast area
of Appalachia on both sides of the mountains. The Trail was financed
entirely by the Transylvania Company, the brainchild of Judge and/or
Colonel Richard Henderson, Esquire of Salisbury, Rowan County, North
Carolina.
2. Daniel Boone was deeply involved in the negotiations for the
"purchase" of Kentucky by Henderson's Transylvania Company. Boone could
be described as "living on his horse" during the negotiations; he moved
back and forth between the Indians and Henderson's office in Salisbury.
He was present at the conclusion of the negotiations at Sycamore Shoals,
and as soon as Boone was sure that the documents would be signed he
assembled a group of road cutters and blazed the Wilderness Road to what
became Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky.
3. A recent study by the National Parks Service determined
that approximately 90% of the original Daniel Boone route is now paved
highway. The study also took note of the general sentiment for full-
scale identification of this famous pioneer route to Kentucky.
B. BOONE HISTORIC MARKER
1. In Wilkes County, North Carolina, there is already a perm-
anent bronze marker along side the highway locating the sites of the
cabins that Daniel and Rebecca Boone used when they lived in the Ferguson
Township area of that county.
2. It is suggested that there be a similar permanent marker
erected in Davie County showing the Boone Family sites in Davie County,
North Carolina.
3. A possible and logical site for such a bronze marker:
near/along side the present Boone Highway Marker erected by the State
of North Carolina on Highway 601 at the Joppa Cemetery on the northern
edge of Mocksville, North Carolina. Joppa Cemetery is where Daniel
Boone's parents, Squire and Sarah (Morgan) Boone, are buried.
