The Davie County. Health Department I,"

The Davie -Yadkin Health De-
partment is the official health
agency of these -two counties. It
is an organization of specially
trained people serving the public
health needs of the two counties,
preventing illness, and prolonging
life of citizens against disease
and promoting general health
and well-being. Although organ-
ized into one unit and one head
for administrative purposes, the
two -county health district breaks
Idown into individual units for
both Davie and Yadkin Counties.
This is the story of the Davie
County Health Department..Jt's
history.... it's purpose ... and what
it Hoes.
Davie County first entered into
the realm of public health service
in 193 when a four county health
district was ; organized. Included
in this district were the counties
of Forsyth, Stokes, Yadkin and
Davie. •
In these early days the health
offices consisted of two rooms
over Meroney • Hardware Store,
Dr. J. Roy Hege was the District
Health Officer and Miss Mary
Corpening and Mrs. Margaret
Green were the nurses.
During these early days the
health department administra-
tion underwent many changes.
Forsyth soon formed a health
district of their own, and Davie,
Yadkin and Stokes became a se-
parate health district. On July
1, 1945, Dr. Alfred Mordecai, a
retired Army Colonel, became the
health officer of this district. Dr.
Eugene Taylor served. in . this . pos-
ition, 1948-1949.
•In 1953, the district became the
Davie -Yadkin Health District
and operated under the supervi-
sion of Dr. Fred Pegg of Wins-
ton-Salem, plus assistants that
worked directly with the health
departments in (the two counties.
During this period the health
{ department had moved from the
Meroney building to three rooms
in the Johnstone Building on
Main Street.
Other Health Officers serving
here have included: Dr. Bob Sni-
der, Dr. John L. Chestnut, Dr. B.
B. McGuire, and Dr. A. J. Hol-
ton, present Health Officer, who
has been here for the past three
years.
With constant increasing dem-
and for services, the Davie Health
Department moved into their
new health center building near
the hospital on August of 1955.
These modern facilities were
constructed under the Hill -Bur-
ton Act, with the county provid-
ing only 20% of the actual cost:
Services
The local health department
provides the following basic serv-
ices: Sanitation, vital statistics,
maternal and child health, com-
municable and other disease con-
trol, laboratory service a n d
health education.
In the protection against di-
sease, the private physicians and
health department work together
to control contagious diseases in
this county. The health depart-
ment holds clinics to give immu-
nization against whooping cough,
-diphtheria, polio. smallpox, typ-
hold fever and other special im-
munizations. For example. dur-
ing the month of June alone. this
year. a total of 535 were seen in
these clinics.
There are the home nursing
visits in which the nurse teaches
the family how to carry out the
doctor's instructions. including'
how to give good home nursing
care and will instruct the family
as to isolation precautions to
protect other members of the
family from catching the disease.
The health department main-
tains a register of all known cas-
es of tuberculosis and their con-
tacts and holds chest -"X-ray
clinics for studying these cases,
and contacts and the public at
large. Persons with tuberculosis
are referred to their private phy-
sicians, and when necessary. ar-
rangements are made for sanitor-
ium care.
Diagnosis is made of venereal
disease cases and the department
provides adequate penicillin
treatment where indicated.
When cases of certain com-
municable disease occur, the
health department traces down
the source of the disease in order
to prevent additional cases.
Sanitation
'The health department educat-
es food handlers as to the safe
methods of preparing, serving
and handling foods in restaur-
ants, in meat markets, In abat-
toirs, and other food handling
establishments. A • regular . inspec-
tion by the sanitarian assures
the public that the proper san-
itation safeguards ' are being
maintained.
In addition to the above, the
sanitarian makes regular inspec-
tion of the dairy farms to assure ,
the production and processing of
safe clean milk; helps families
plan a safe water supply and
sanitary sewage disposal; provid-
es a testing service for all water
supplies; advises ways and means
of controling rats, flies and mos-
quitoes and on garbage disposal.
The sanitarian also inspects
the schools to assure that lunch-
rooms, water supplies. sewage di- t
sposal, playgrounds, lighting and
other facilities meet health stan-
dards. Recreation areas, tourist
homes, and the like also come in
for regular inspection.
Mothers and Children
The health department works .
to provide better health for mo- `
ethers and children through edu-
cation, training and being, sure '
that the proper medical services
are available. {
Pre-school clinics are held in
cooperation with the medical and
dental societies, rthe schools, at
the PTA, to assure the proper
immunizations and examine chil-
dren for physical defects.' The
children are referred to their pri-
vate physician, for medical care
when indicated.
During school years, public
health nursing service is provid-
ed for' school children and me-
dical inspections are given.
Record Keeping
Keeping the official record of
births and deaths is one of the
basic Jobs' of the - health depart-.
mint. Also certain' diseases are
reported to the health • depart-
ment by private physicians, thus
enabling the health departmen
to plan immediate action to pre
vent communicable diseases fro
spreading.
In addition to the above, the
health department also provides
various literature. ' laboratory

health official said here today that
he would like to see all public
health workers "become sensitized
to mental health problems" en-
countered In daily routine. '.
Dr. C. C. Applewhite, director of
local health administration for the
State Board of Health, discussed
the link between physical and
mental health needs in a dedica-
tion address for the new Davie
County Health Center.
The $27,000 center, located in
West Mocksville, has. been in. use i
since August. .
Dr. Applewhite said that public
health workers, by becoming more
aware of mental problems, may
help eventually to find out 'what
causes these disturbances.
He also traced the progress of
the public health service and said f

Dr. Applewhite reported that
there are now 54 health centers
operating in North Carolina and '
that 14 others are under construc-

Salem, district health officer.
Dr. Henry S. Anderson presided.
Invocation was given by the Rev.
Paul Richards of the First Presby-
terian Church, and benediction by
the Rev. J. P. Davis, pastor of
Mocksville Baptist Church.
Greetings were presented by
John E. Durham, chairman of the
district Board of Health. Presenta-
tion of the building was made by {
County Attorney A. T. Grant.

The brick structure contains' a
waiting room, a clerk's office,
health officer's office, two. treat-
ment rooms, laboratory, nurse's
office, sanitarian's office, X-ray
room and storage room.
The county's share of the
cost

coming from federal and state +
funds.
The Davie County Health Depart-
ment was first established in 1938
as part of a four -county district,
in this district ware Davie,Stokes,
Yadkin and Forsyth counties. Dr.
J. Roy Hege of Winston-Salem was
the first health officer of this
district.
In 1945, it was reorganized as a
three -county' -'district of Davie,
Stokes and Yadkin counties. Dr.
Alfred Mordecai was the health
officer. The headquarters of the
district were located in Mocksville.
From 1948.1949, Dr. Eugene Taylor
served as health officer.
In 1950, Stokes County withdrew
and the Davie -Yadkin District was
organized. Dr. Pegg became the
health officer.
Mr. Shell has served as sanitar-
ian since 1945. Miss Stroud has
been secretary since 1943. Mrs.
Stroud has served here as public
health nurse since 1948. Mrs.
Chappell began her duties here as
,health nurse in 1949.

judging of spring gardens in Cooleemee. The garden
will be judged again in the fall. The county agent,
George Hobson, and home demonstration agent, Miss
Florence Mackie, do the judging.
The picture of this particular garden was made on
May 23. In it were growing 17 different varieties of _
vegetables. Last year the Page family canned 107
quarts and 12 pints from their garden. Since 1942

edly of his .time and service to

of one of their most colorf»l early
citizens, Daniel Boone ... tae fa-
mous pioneer. The display features
a mounted fox, "all bright-eyed and
bushy -tailed", keeping a watchful
eye on a wood duck and a hungry
squirrel 'sitting on a stump with an
acorn. There is also an old musket,
powderhorn and leather bag, as well
as a picture of Daniel Boone, the
i hunter. There is also the coonskin '
cap and an axe sticking in a .log.
One of the most interesting things
in the whole display is the hand-
: done reproduction of the inscription
on the -Boone Trail marker which
stands on the square near the court-
house. This reproduction was done
by Mrs. (Rufus Sanford, Jr. It was
a surprise to all to find that the
word "soldier" had been spelled
without the "e". It is reproduced
in the same fashion.
There is a large display in the
Children's Section of the Library
that depicts the creation of the new
library. This theme is "Davie Coun-
ty Puts Its Shoulder To The Wheel
.. And Now WeHave a New Li-'
brary Opening Wany . Doors".

map of Davie County made to look
like a Quaint -smiting figure push.',
ing a huge old wheel towards an
easily -seen architect's drawing 'of
the new building. The words, "open-
ing many doors", lead the eye to
a colorful grouping of new books
for children. These cover one whole
end of the area and entice the chil-
dren to come in and look. The fig-
ure of Davie County was built by
Roger Funderburke and was paint-
ed by Mrs. Jack Jerome, both of
Cooleemee. (Picture on page 3.)
The Davie County Library staff
acknowledges the generous and will-
ing help given by all who are ap-
proached for the loan of possessions
to be used in carrying out the idea
of a display. Without this assistance
the library could not offer the ex-
hibits which seem to interest so
many people.
"This is another example of the
cooperation received from the en-
tire county in the new library ven-
ture. The list is just too long to
name all the individuals who had
some part in assembling these two
displays, but it includes at least'l5
individuals and two business firms
who * helped with "props" and
wished the library well. No wonder
our staff appreciates all this so
much", said Mrs. Paul Blackweld-
er, Librarian.
