Lot Ito. 4: Percolation tests were performed by the Davie County Health Department frith a rate of 240 min/in. in the front of the prope::ty and 480 mi-fin. in the back portion of the lot. Examination of soil from an auger boring made on this site indicates that the soil is unsuitable due to a clayey sub- soil havin; a massive structure with shallow depth to rock or saprolite at approximately 12 inches. Lot No. 4 is properly classified unsuitable for a septic tank system. Also, examination of an existing percolation hole on Lot: 4 indicated that after approximately one ::eek of dry weather, water was still standing at the initial depth when the percolation test vas performed. Lot No. 5: Percolation tests run by the Davie Co•.uty Health Department Frere as follows: 30 min/in. in the front and approximately 240 min/in. in the back portion of the lot. Soil conditions at Lot No. 5 indicate that a clayey subsoil exists to a death of approximately 12 inches which is quite massive ana, in turn, overlies a saprolite to a depth of at least 4 feet. Examination of perc holes on this lot indicates that the Water is still standing in the bottoms of these holes after having been run the preceding :•Ionday. Lot 'No. 25: Percolation tests performed by the Davie County Health Depart- ment indicate that the percolation rate of 240 min/in. both in the front and back portion of the lot. Observation of these perc holes one week after this test was performed indicate that the Water is _sanding Within 8 inches to 12 inches of the surface. A soil boring performed on this site indicated that a massive, plastic, 2:1 clay evists to a depth of approximately 20 Lnches anc at that point overlies a diorite saprolite. This lot, like the others preceding, is unsuitable for a conventional septic tank system. Stafford: Thank you for your telephone call today regarding the findings from my survey of June 15, 1978, of this subdivision to determine the suitability for the installation and proper functioning of ground absorption sewage disposal systems. Please find attached a copy of my memorandum dated June 15, 1978, regarding the above referenced subdivision. As you will note, all the lots vehich I evaluated are properly classified unsuitable based on G.S. 130-160, G.S. 130-166.25, and 10 NUC 10A .1900 entitled, Rules for Ground Absorption Sewage _Disposal Systems of 3000 Gallons or Less Design Capacity, effective July 1, 1977. As you will see from your review of the attached memorandum, the lots in Cedar Forest Estates are severely limited for conventional septic tank systems due to the follc;7inj factors referenced in the state rules: 1. Soil texture - Clayey soils were encountered in all the soil borings and contain a 2:1 clay mineralogy that has a high shrink-swell potential. 2. Soil structure - Many of the soils encountered in these borings exhibited massive to very creak, subangular, blocky structure thus limiting, the movement of water through the subsoil. 3. Soil depth - Weathe=ed rock or saprolite ras encountered in all of the soil bor-ings at a depth less than 43 inches belC-.7 the existins ground surface. • I:. Soil permeability - Percolation tests performed by the Davie County sanitarians exemplify the findings of the soil evaluation above; that is, e_ctrenely x1017 permeability or unsuitable percolation rates clue to the unsuitable soil/site conditions encountered on. these lots. This was performed at your request as part of the preliminary planning process in order to determine areas of soil thai have potential for subsurface wastewater disposal. The county had denied a permit on these lots due to expansive clay mineralogy. During an appeal the county and Reiional Soil Specialist Kevin Neal evaluated pits and casae to the same conclusion, but did note Haat the saprolite encountered deep in the pit had potential to be used. However,due to the depth of the saprolite additional work would need to be provided. S&EC tmversed the property and observed.landforrns(slope,drainage patterns,past use,etc.)as well as soil conditions(depth,texture,structure,seasonal wetness,restrictive horizons,etc.) through the use of pits, The site was evaluated dusting moist soil conditions. From these observations,an evaluation of the site,relative to subsurface disposal of wastewater,was developed. Soil areas were estimated in the field. The soil/site evaluation criteria used is that contained in 15,A,NCAC 1$A,,1900"Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatr=t and Disposal Systems". Hydraulic ConduWvity Unsaturated Zone: Saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ksat)of the unsaturated parts of the saprolite was measured in situ using a constant head per .axameter. The methods used in these measurements were similar to those described in Methods of Soil Analysis,Part 1.,Chapter 29-Hydraulic Conductivity of Saturated Soils: Field Methods,29-3.2 Shallow Well Pump 1n Method,pp. 758-763 and in the Soil Science Society of America Journal,Vol. 53,no. 5, Sept.-Oct. 1989, "A Constant head Permeameter•for Measuring Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity of the Vadose Zone"and "Comparison of the Glover Solution with the Simultaneous-Equations Approach for Measuring Hydraulic Conductivity." The conductivity horizon refers to the soil material encountered in the auger hole whore conductivities were measured. During the initial site visit,it was obvious during the tests that water was entering the holes, which would cause much-slower readings. Therefore another site visit was made to run additional Ksats. The average of these five measurements is 3.06 Wd/ft FINDINGS The sails on this tract consist of an expansive clay subsoil. The accompanying map indicates the approximate pit locations. The soil on the property is unsuitable due to expansive clay mineralogy. The saprolite encountered in the pits appeared to be provisionally suitable based on texture. During my field evaluation,I thought the texture of the saprolite was sandy loam. Composite soil samples were collected and sent to A&L Labs for particle size analysis. Sample 001 was from pits 1 and 2 and had a texture of loamy sand. Sample 002 was from pits 4 and 5 and had a texture of sandy loam. Sample 003 was taken from pits 6 and 7 and had a texture of loamy sand. There appears to be plenty of area for the system and repair so I do not believe that available space is a concern. With the textures of the saprolite on site the Long Term Acceptance Rate (LTAR)could be between 0.4 and 0.7 gpd/ft. I propose utilizing sand lined trenches for•this system. The sand lined trenches would allow for some pretreatment of the effluent before it reaches the saprolite. I recommend a tremeh depth of 60 inches,with 3 feet of sand. I recommend a LTAR of 0.3 gpd/fl,this is approximately 10%of the average of the Ksats. With a 0.3 gpd1f LIAR a total of 400 linear feot of line would be needed for a conventional septic system,or 300 linear feet of line for a 25%reduction system. GET ORAL WASTEWATER CONSIDERATIONS Once potentially useable areas are located through vertical borings,the next consideration is the horizontal extent of those areas. The size and configuration of the useable soil area dictate the utility of that area. The size of a subsurface disposal field is determined by: 1)the design flow from the source(120 galloms/bedroorm/day in residences),and 2)the long term acceptance rate (LTAR)of the soil(based on the hydraulic conductivity of the soil,a function of the soil's texture,mineralogy,structure,porosity,etc.). The camfiguration must be such that an efficient layout of disposal lines(on contour)is possible. An additional consideration is the required setbacks for the system from various elements such as wells(100'),streams and ponds(50')or more(depending on watershed regulations),property lines(10'),top of embankment(15'), watershed buffers,etc. (see Attachment 1). The utility of a potential useable soil area for a subsurface system is most accurately determined by an on-Sround layout of the proposed systetu. The total area needed for system and repair areas will depend upon the system type,the layout of that system and the total design flow(factors mentioned above). A typical area needed for a three-bedroom residence is approximately 7,000 to 9,000 ft(could be more depending on site features)for system and repair area. These estimates reference Laws and Rule 'oz Sewage Treaft=and Isoml Sygms for North Carolina and use a LTAR of 0.3 gpd/fl?for conventional septic systems. The health department will detem'dne the ultimate LIAR a ez their lot evaluation. 5&�C will be glad to assist in any system layout or sizing calculations,if requested. This report discusses the general location of potentially useable soils for on-site subsurface wastewater disposal and,of course,does not constitute or imply awry approval or permit as needed by the client fm the local heath departxmew. The site plan for the lot must ensure that adequate soil area for system and repair is unaffeded by site,elements(house placement,driveway,wells,patios,decks,etc.)on that or adjacent lots. The area ultimately designated by the health department on the site plan for the septic system and repair must remain undisturbed(no mechanical clearing,excavation,heavy traffic or other significant site disturbing activities)until authorized by the health department. A lot with initially adequate useable soil area may be rendered unusable as a result of improper site planning and/or disturbance, A,field layout of the proposed septic systems may be required as part of the individual lot development process. An individual septic system permit will be required for each lot prior to obtaining a building permit. This will involve a detailed evaluation by the Iocal health department to determine, among other things,systema size and layout,well,drive and house location. Only after developing this information can a final determination,be macre concerning specifics of system design and site utilization. This was performed at your request as part of the preliminary planning process in order to determine areas of soil that have potential for subsurface wastewater disposal. The county had denied a permit on these lots due to expansive clay mineralogy. During an appeal the county and Regional Soil Specialist Devin Neal evaluated pits and came to the same conclusion,but did note that the saprolite encountered deep in the pit had potential to be used. However, due to the depth of the saprolite additional work would need to be provided. S&.EC traversed the property and observed landforms(slope, drainage patterns, past use, etc.)as well as soil conditions(depth,texture, structure, seasonal wetness, restrictive horizons, etc.)through the use of pits. The site was evaluated during wet soil conditions. From these observations, an evaluation of the site, relative to subsurface disposal of wastewater, was developed. Soil areas were estimated in the field. The soillsite evaluation criteria used is that contained in 15 A NCAC 18A.1900"Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems". Hydraulic Conductivity Unsaturated Zone: Saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ksat).of the unsaturated parts of the saprolite was measured in situ using a constant head permeameter. The conductivity horizon refers to the soil material encountered in the auger hole where conductivities were measured. The depths of the Ksat measurements were between 31 and 76 inches below land surface, The results of these tests are shown in Table 1. These Ksats ranged between 0.12 and 3.07 gpd/ft-2. It was.obvious during the tests that water was entering the holes,which would cause much slower readings, All of the measurements were slower than expected for the texture of the saprolite. Even the two highest measurements(1.78 and 3.07 gpd/ft2)are slower than would be expected with this texture. The average of the two ' -highest measurements was 2.43 gpd/ft2. I believe these readings are lower than they should be due to unmeasured water entering the holes. I believe the water that entered the holes was from water trapped in the soil due to freezing. When the pits were dug in the morning;the soil appeared to be dry. However, that afternoon after the temperatures rose, the site and the,spoil from the pits became muddy. There may be other reasons for this but the only conclusion I have come to was the water was held in the soil due to freezing temperatures. With the rising temperatures the held water was released and influenced the conductivity measurements. FINDINGS The soils on this tract consist of an expansive clay subsoil. The accompanying map indicates the approximate pit locations. The soil on the property is unsuitable due to expansive clay mineralogy. The saprolite encountered in the pits appeared to be provisionally suitable based on texture. During my field evaluation, I thought the texture of the saprolite was sandy loam. Composite soil samples were collected and sent to A&L Labs for particle size analysis. Sample 001 was from pits 1 and 2 and had a texture of loamy sand. Sample 002 was from pits 4 and 5 and had a texture of sandy loam. Sample 003 was taken from pits 6 and 7 and had a texture of loamy sand. There appears to be plenty of area for the system and repair so I do not believe that available space is a concern. With the textures of the saprolite on site the Long Term Acceptance Rate(LTAR) could be between 0.4 and 0.7 gpd/ft2, I propose utilizing sand lined trenches for this system. The sand lined trenches would allow for some pretreatment of the eluent before it reaches the saprolite. I recommend a trench depth of 60 inches,with 3 feet of sand. I recommend a LTAR of 0.25 gpdfift,this is approximately 10% of the average of the two viable Ksats. I am assuming a low LTAR due to the difficulties encountered on-site.With a 0.25 gpd/ft LTAR a total of 480 linear feet of fine would be needed for a conventional septic system, or 360 linear feet of line for a 25%reduction system. GENERAL WASTEWATER CONSIDERATIONS Once potentially useable areas are located through vertical borings, the next consideration is the horizontal extent of those areas: The size and configuration of the useable soil area dictate the utility of that area. The size of a subsurface disposal field is determined by: 1) the design flow from the source(120 gallons/bedroom/day in residences), and 2)the long term acceptance rate(LTAR) of the soil(based on the hydraulic conductivity of the soil, 03/10/ 005 12:27 8284667406 SOIL AND ENVIR CONS PAGE 04 a function of the soils texture, mineralogy, structure, porosity, etc.). The configuration must be such that an efficient layout of disposal lines(on contour)is possible. An additional consideration,is the required setbacks for the system from various elements such as wells(100'), streams and ponds(50') or more(depending on watershed regulations), property lines(101), top of embankment(15'), watershed buffers, etc. (see Attachment 1). The utility of a potential useable soil area for a subsurface system is most accurately determined by an on-ground layout of the proposed system. The total area needed for system and repair areas will depend upon the system type,the layout of that system and the total design flow(factors mentioned above). A typical area needed for a three- bedroom residence is approximately 7,000 to 10,000 A2 (could be more depending on features)for system and repair area. These estimates reference Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatm t and A's oral Sygems for North Carolina and use a LTAR of 0.25 gpd/ for conventional septic systems. As a professional consulting firm, S&EC is hired for its professional opinion in these matters. The rules governing wastewater treatment (interpreted and governed by local and state agencies)are evolving constantly, and in many cases, affected by the opinions of individuals employed by these governing agencies. Because of this. S&EC cannot guarantee that areas delineated and/or systems designed will be permitted by the governing agencies. As always, S&EC recommends that anyone making financial commitments on a tract be fully aware of individual permit requirements on that tract prior to final action. The site plan for the lot must ensure that adequate soil area for system and repair is unaffected by site elements (house placement, driveway, wells, patios, decks, etc.) on that or adjacent lots. The area ultimately designated by the health department on the site plan for the septic system and repair must remain undisturbed(no mechanical clearing, excavation, heavy traffic or other significant site disturbing activities)until authorized by the health department. A lot with initially adequate useable soil area may be rendered unusable as a result of improper site planning and/or disturbance. A,field layout of the proposed septic systems may be required as part of the individual lot development process. An individual septic system permit will be required for each lot prior to obtaining a building permit. These lots are located on the corner of Cedar Forest Lane and Drake circle in Davie County to determine areas of soil and saprolite that have the potential to accommodate a ground absorption sewage treatment and disposal system. Soil means the naturally occurring body of porous mineral and organic materials on the land surface. Soil is composed of sand-, silt-, and clay-particles that are mixed with varying amounts of lager fragments and some organic material. Soil contains less than 50 percent volume as rock, saprolite, or coarse-earth fraction(mineral particles greater than 2.0 millimeters). The upper limit of the soil is the land surface, and its lower limit is"rock", "saprolite", or other parent material. Saprolite is defined by the State as the body of porous material formed in place by weathering of igneous or metamorphic rocks. Saprolite has massive, rock-controlled structure, and retains the fabric(arrangement of minerals)of its parent rock in at least 50 percent of its volume. Saprolite can be dug with hand tools. The lower limit of saprolite is "rock" and its upper limit is"soil' or the land surfaces. The term saprolite does not include sedimentary parent materials. Onsite Soils traversed the property observing the landforms, (topographical features, drainage patterns, etc.) and soil conditions(soil horizons, depth,texture, structure, drainage, mineralogy, etc.). This evaluation was conducted with a hand auger in accordance with current soil science practices and technology and the soil/site criteria found in 15 A NCAC 18A.1900"Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems." A map of the area evaluated is enclosed. OBSERVATIONS AREA UN(BLACaThe surface layer has a texture of loam, 7 to 11 inches. The subsurface layer to a depth of 30 inches has textures of clay and clay loam. Structure • 2 appears to be angular blocky with very firm, firm sticky, very plastic consistence. The clay was found to be expansive. Lenses of weathered rock were observed in the lower portion of this layer. The depth to the seasonal high water table was observed at 10 inches,. Slopes range from 4 to 6 percent. FINDINGS Based on the soil/site evaluation, the soil properties and characteristics observed in AREA UN(BLACKwere found to be unsuitable for the installation of conventional type systems due to poorly drained soils, expansive clay mineralogy, and/or shallow depth of suitable soil material.
