Among the treasures in the North Carolina State Archives is a letter from
Thomas Jefferson relating to the statue of George Washington that was placed
in the State House in 1821. In 1815, the General Assembly authorized
Governor William Miller to obtain a suitable statue of Washington, and he sought
the advice of several persons, including U. S. Senator Nathaniel Macon. Macon,
in turn, obtained opinions from various persons, including Thomas Jefferson.
The Jefferson letter was directed to Macon, and Macon forwarded it and others
to the governor. The origiiaal letter is in the Governor's Papers in the State
Archives.
The letter from Thomas Jefferson is written entirely in his own handwriting
and is, therefore, quite rare. Your continued support of our program via member-
