Next to the Kings of England themselves, the de Clare family,
being of the direct (although with a bar sinister) descent of
the Dukes of Normandy, as did William the Conquerer (with the
same lack of liturgical benefit), was probably the most influ-
ential, prestigious and wealthy of all the titled families in
Europe. And as to their relation in the female line, the
de Bohun/Bryan families probably had more de Clare blood than
any other auxiliary line.
"The barons of the Conquerer were a close knit group, much linked by cousinship and
marriage with him and each other. Most of those who became barons in England seem
to have been barons in Normandy. The great house whose principal English branch
took its name from Clare in Sufflok and acquired earldoms in Hertford, Pembroke and
Gloucester, was a bastard branch of the house of the Dukes of Normandy. They were
Counts of Brionne before the Conquest. After the Battle of Hastings, William the
Conquerer bestowed these vast honors along the Welsh Marches to his cousins, possibly
because he was afraid of their power and wanted to keep them so busy subduing the
