Humphrey de Bohun (pronounced boon) arrived in England with the troops of
William the Conqueror. Humphrey de Bohun and his fancily were Normans of
Nordic descent, living in the area of St Georges de Bohun and St Andre de
Bohun - two small villages near Carentan, and not far from the coastline
of French Normandie that became "Utah Beach" where allied troops made -a
sucessful landing during the June 1944 Invasion of France from England.
Humphrey de Bohun was prominent among the troops of William the Conqueror.
For his efforts during the October 1066 Invasion of England from France
Humphrey was given the Manor of Talesford in Norfolk, as recorded in the
Doomsday Book. The name Bohun (like the name Mohun which became moon)
is a source of the name Boon(e) and also Bown(e) Boown, Bone and Bowen.
The Boon(e)s of the Exeter area of Devon were thus descended from either:
(1) a north European Boon who had fled to England during the Hundred Years War,
(2) a Norman or Breton nicknamed "le Bon" (good, or handsome in appearance)
(3) or the Norman de Bohun family - and perhaps Humphrey de Bohun.
Several members of the Boon(e) family in the United States of America have
undertaken extensive and difficult research tracing the Devon George Boon(e)s
through many generations to the famous Humphrey de Bohun the First.

THE B 0 0 N E FAMILY LINE
Since the year 800 A. D., the blood that has flowed through Boone
veins has been a curious mixture of royal purple and the glow of
wanderlust. The name itself, while phonetically retaining about
the same pronunciation, has undergone several versions according
to the migration pattern of its bearers.
Originally the name came from the Norse (Viking) BjOAn translated
variously "the brown" and "the bear" (maybe it was a brown bear!).
In 910 A.D. the name followed the Viking Rollo (Norse:Hkot6) and
his band into the north of France (Northmen: a quo the province
of Normandy) where succeeding generations adopted the French''
de BoQ. After 300 years of Norman occupation in France, our
ancestor Humphrey de Bohun crossed the English channel with his
cousin William the Conquerer. tie was a knight, chief under his
brother-in-law Ranulf, Viscount of Bayeux. As such he took part
in the Battle of Hastings, A.D. 1066. In England the name
continued its French spelling, since successive Anglo-Norman
rulers of England retained French as the official court language.
By the 16th century, English had again become a national language
and accordingly the family name became Anglicized. The French
de was dropped and the spelling became phonetic: Boon. The final
e does not appear to have been added until after the move to
America. Meantime, the Devonshire generations, as a minor branch,
were so designated on the King's Rent Rolls (medieval English
census) by listing the family name first, followed by the given
name. The great-grandfather of Squire Boone, the one the American
family designates as Georgel Boone, was listed on Rent Rolls as
Boon Geo,%ge.
