HORNER 3457 Kenwick Trail SW Roanoke, VA 24018 Route 1 Box 365A Mocksv(lle, N C 27028 17 October 1986 May I suggest that Catherine, the "mother" of your Sarah Gunn, was named Catherine Boone Lam d, and not Catherine Lemon I enclose my listing of the 11 children of William & Elizabeth [Boone] Grant. Their youngest child, a daughter, was named Rebecca Boone Grant; she married a James Lamond (descendants use this spelling). Note on page 115 of Mrs Spraker's The Boone Family three children are listed for Rebecca Boone [Grant] Lamond and her husband. She was one of 11 children and it is possible that there were more than the three offspring listed on page 115. (See xerox copy) In my listings, I DATE everyone, and also try to locate the place of birth and the place of death. The dates will tell you if the facts match. Generally speaking the mother should be at least 16 years of age at the birth of her first child. Mary Grant Lamond was born 17 January 1800; her mother Rebecca Boone [Grant] Lamond was then 26 years of age. Sarah Gunn born 17 February 1796 could not possibly be a daughter of any of the daughters of Rebecca Boone [Grant] Lamond. There were other Boones and other Lamond & Lemons, then as now. And there is a Boone Family Research Association of Missouri, 3 which in its files of various Boones and related families might have an answer to your question. The Historian/Genealogist of this organization may be able to help youe 0 y Mrs HUGH DeWITT \ 4705 Crysler Independence,MO 64050 U With all good wishes, 'Q Davie County Public Library MOcksviil2, INIC c U 3457 Kenwi ck Tra i 1 , SW Roanoke, VA 24018 13 October 1936 Dear Mr. Boone, For several years I have been engaged in genealogical research of my mother's family, the GOUGERs. This entails visits several times a year to the Salisbury Library to use their facilities. During my most recent (late September) trip there, I was discussing with the research room librarian (Shirley Hoffman), and several others, my current batch of problems, one of which concerns a BOONE connection. One of the parti- cipants suggested that you might be able to provide some assistance. The problem is this: On 19 Jul 1819, Henry GOUGER (b. 03 Jun 1791-d. 1757) married Sarah GUNN (b. 17 Feb 1796-d. 27 May 1836). The couple subse- quently produced a family of seven children. I am trying to identify Sarah's parentage and, possibly, to determine where she acid Henry were buried. There is a family tradition that Sarah was the daughter of a Dr. GUNN of Fairfax County, Virginia, who, because of his wife's health was traveling south. The group consisted of Dr. GUNN, his wife, Sarah, and a brother. By the time they reached North Carolina, Mrs-. GUNN's health had deteriorated to a point they were forced to interrupt their travel. She died several months later. In the meantime, Sarah met and married Henry GOUGER, Jr. Eventually the father and brother went on to Georgia. Dr. GUNN is reported to have written and published a medical book, and there are reports by several of Henry's grandchildren that a copy of the book was in the GOUGER family's possession until about 1936 when it was destroyed in a fire. Even so, without establishing the identity of Sarah's parents, all of this must be treated only as hearsay. Tra- ditions are notoriously careless of fact. Several years ago, a relative was told by Elizabeth WILLIAMS (then working on her history of Charlotte's First Presbyrterian Church) that Sarah GUNN was the daughter of Catherine Lemon BOONE and promised evidence to support the statement. Unfortunately she (WILLIAMS) died before this came about. There is, however, some support for her statement in the fact that Sarah Gunn GOUGER named her firstborn Catherine Lemon. [I am unsure about the spelling of "Lemon." There is a brief mention of one of the BOONE females marrying a LEMMON in one of the publications on Squire BOONE's family. "LEHMAN," of course, is a more common Davie County Public Library Mocksviliet NC spelling. But Catherine Lemon GOUGER's Bible, I am told, spells it "Lemon," and I have used this spelling above.] Despite considerable effort, I have been unable to identify Sarah's GUNN antecedants. Neither have I been able to learn anything about a Catherine Lemon BOONE. My question to you, then, is: Do you know anything of a Catherine Lemon BOONE or of any female BOONE who married a GUNN and was of an age to have produced children about.the time Sarah was born? If possible, I would also like to know where she was buried. My apologies for being so verbose, but it is not always possible to predict what will and what won't be useful. For any information or suggestions you are able to supply, I will be most greatful. Sincerely, JACK B. Could you tell me anything about that line? I have a copy of the marriage but little else. I descend through Mary's daughter Jane, who married James B. Sears. Their daughter Mary Sears married Daniel Prigmore, my mother's great grandfather. June LIBRARY HO!-IELL BOONE BOONE FARM ROAD Route 1 Box 365A Mocksville,NC 27028 TEL:. WELCH 5535 Willow Lane Dallas, Texas 75230 My source for the children of John and Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson was Wi1coxson and Allied Families by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck (1958). I submitted to Volume II of North Carolina Ancestors all of the children of Squire and Sarah [Morgan] Boone and (I hope) all of their grandchil- dren. Daniel and Rebecca [Bryan] Boone's youngest son, Nathan Boone, was born at Boone's Station in Kentucky, and therefor was not listed-, he has no North Carolina connection. My intent was to proclaim the Boone connection with the Morth Carolina Piedmont. When the family left Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania Squire was 54, Sarah [Morgan] Boone 50, and their children Sarah [Boone] Wilcoxson/Willcockson 26, Israel 24, Samuel 22.. Jonathan 20, Elizabeth 18, Daniel 15'& 1/2, Mary 14, George 11, Edward 10, Squire 6, and Hannah (the last of their offspring) 4. The family arrived in the Forks of the Yadkin - then Rowan County, now Davie County, North Carolina 1751/2. Squire died here in 1765, Sarah [Morgan] Boone in 1777; they are buried side by side in Davie County's Joppa Cemetery (then called simply Burying Ridge). Son Israel died here in 1756 of consumption, as did his wife. I believe they are buried in Joppa Cemetery [no documentation]. Squire's nephew John Boone ( my direct ancestor) died here in 1803 and was buried "along side" Squire and Sarah. His tombstone stood along side theirs until about 190.0 when it vanished. It is possible that John Boone's grandson, Hugh Daniel Boone who died young is buried in Joppa Cemetery beside his grandparents. Like the stone for John Boone that for Lydia Morgan - died 1742 Aged 46 has vanished.. Three Wilcockson stones remain: Isaac Wilcockson Age 42 (the son of John and Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson) Martha Wilcockson Age 30 and a Wilcockson with the top of the stone and the Christian name gone. departed 11 October 1769. I believe that John Wilcockson (husband of Sarah [Boone] 'Wilcockson is buried here- no gravestone remains to identi- fy his spot. After his death, Sarah went to Kentucky, where she died. There is a Boone connection with the Forks of the Yadkin that has been forgotten - erased by the Kentucky Legend. Indeed, I was once told that Daniel Boone was born in Kentucky! Credit where due- Daniel and all of his brothers and sisters were born in Pnnsylvania, they ALL lived in the North Carolina Piedmont and either early (Daniel & Squire Jr) or late (Jonathan and Sarah[Boonel Wilcockson) they all went to Kentucky. Your very complete listing will be filed under descendants of Sarah [Boonel 'Wilcockson in our ever expanding (good thing!) file. D At 0.
