TWENTY-FIFTH TEXAS_ CAVALRY
The Twenty -Fifth Texas Cavalry was organized by Clayton
C. Gillespie in early 1862. Originally it had been planned that the
unit would serve -as a regiment of lancers. Consequently, even
though the unit. was never armed with lances, it bore the nickname
of the Third Texas Lancers. At least a small handful of men in the
regiment were recruited in Holmes, Texas.
As was the case with almost all Civil War units, the
Twenty -Fifth Texas Cavalry was frequently known by an alternate
designation derived from the name of its commanding officer. Un-
official names of this type identified as having been used by or
f or the regiment are shown below.
Clayton C. Gillespie's Cavalry
Francis J. Boggs' Cavalry
William M. Ney land' s Cavalry
Joseph N. Dark's Cavalry .
Edward B. Pickett's Cavalry
Ben jariin Ross' Cavalry
The regiment served in Louisiana and Arkansas until captured
at Arkansas Post, Arkansas, on January 11, 1863. One company was detach-
ed from the regiment at that time and it avoided capture..This company
served in Texas throughout the rest of its career, most of.the time
acts g as Provost Guards in H..uston and Shreveport. Almost nothing
else is known about the activities of this company.
The larger part of the regiment was held as prisoners of
war at Camp Douglas, Illinois, until the summer of 1863. Exchanged,
it was dismounted and served the rest of its career with the Amy of
Tennessee. The list below shows the specific higher command assign-
ments of the regiment.

Sergeant Julian J. Lecoure, Company "H", was included on
the Roll of Honor published after .the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia,
September 19 - 21, 1863.
The regiment took part -in two engagements west of the
Mississippi River. After being captured and exchanged, it partici-
pated in more than thirty -f ive engagements east of the Mississippi

the Twenty-Dif th Texas Cavalry surrendered in North Carolina. N thing
has been found, either, to tell of the final end of the company in

CAMP NEAR SHREVEPORT
25th REGIMENT TEXAS CAVALRY
AUGUST 28, 1862
Dear Father,
I seat myself this morning to write you a few lines. I am
tolerable well. Hirom is no better than he was when you were
here. He is in camps. Yet James Huff has had one or two
fevers since you was here. He is about well.
I can tell when any of us will get off to come home. I sold
my horse to Capt. W.D. Davis for $125 in certified accounts
and got $20 in cash for my saddle and bridle. Tell Sarah
that I sent her $10 by Capt. Davis. I have had my like-
ness taken and I shall send this letter to you by C.H. Jones
and my likeness send my likeness to Sarah to keep for them
to see me while I am, as I may never return. We have to
pay 400 per day for feed for Colonels horse and Colonel
Neylan says he won't let anybody have corn at all after we
leave here. Iam in a hurry.
Pa, there is a Lieutenant in Singletary's company that says
he will give $1700 for a Negro man to cook. He will pay it
in Confederate money. Give my respects to all the folks in
general farewell to all as we never meet again on earth but
I hope we will in heaven if we don't meet on earth. I remain
your sincere son until death.
