SERENDIPITY
You’re looking for something you think you want, but you find something else much more interesting…
I was reading the April 1919 Mocksville newspaper on microfilm and found the article at the left. The circled section tells
about Jane Binkley who tatted 45 yards of lace. Tatting is a slow craft and
this is astounding.
Tatting is a craft that I enjoy and have taught since 1980. Because of this, I
became interested in Jane Binkley and researched her as if she were my own
kin.
The following pages describe my pursuit of her history. I thought you might
get some ideas for your own research.
However, nowhere in my discoveries did I find mention that she could tat.
It’s too bad that information is not recorded in records.
At a national genealogical meeting in 1980 in Salt Lake City, we were told
that the names, dates, and places were very important, but even more
important are the stories.

In browsing www.newspapers.com for Davie County, I searched
for the word “tatting” just on a whim. I found this neat article in the 20
February 1918 Record shown at the right.
Granted, this is not earth-shaking history, but it gives a picture of
daily life in Mocksville for some women. These two articles would have
been written during World War One. In spite of the worry of loved ones
being in the war zone, life continued, and women sought companionship
and crafts to keep busy. My book Davie County in World War One found
670 men and 3 women who went to war from our small county. This
book shows the dramatic side of that time period, and these two articles
about women give us a glimpse into their social and craft lives almost a hundred years ago.
Information about Cressie Jane Tesh Binkley
1850 Census for Forsyth County: Moses Tesh, 33, Blacksmith; Mary, 32; William A., 6; Cressie J., 5; John F., 7/12
1860 Moses and Mary and six children are living in Panther Creek, Yadkin County. Moses and William are blacksmiths,
but Jane is not listed with the family. [I could not find Jane. I searched for all the Jane’s born in 1845 or 1846
and all the girls named Cressie and all the girls with surname Tesh.]
1868 Jane Tesh married John W.G. Binkley on 23 January 1868 in Yadkin County. His parents were John and Elizabeth
Binkley; her parents were Moses and Mary Tesh (Info from Ancestry.com)

1920 Census for East Mocksville, street not given: Samuel Binkley, 38, machinist; Martha, 32; Marvin F., 9; James G., 7;

1923 Death Certificate for Crissy Jane Binkly (sic): She was born November 4, 1846 and
died April 27, 1923 of pleurisy following pneumonia. She was 76 years, 5 months, and
24 days old. She was widowed and a housewife. The only address given was Mocksville.
Her parents were Moses Tesh and Mollie Mock. [Mollie is a nickname for Mary.] Sam F.
Binkly (sic) was the informant. Joppa Cemetery was place of burial and was spelled
“Jopepy”. Undertaker was Walker and Ijames in Mocksville.
COMMENTS:
In Ancestry.com, online family trees say that she was born in Stokes County, NC.
The 1880 and 1910 censuses had the families at the bottom of the page. It would be
real easy to assume that this is all the family, but there are several more children
listed on the top of the next page.
On FindAGrave, there are photographs of the graves of her husband, and two sons,
but there was not a photo of her grave. I went to Joppa Cemetery near Mocksville and walked around looking for her
so I could take a picture and attach it to that page. There is a blank space between her husband and Marvin but no

These comments were on her page in FindAGrave: “Chrissie Jane Tesh was the fifth of six known children of Moses
Tesh (1818-1872) and Molly Mock Tesh (1819-1877), who married c1842 in presumably North Carolina. It is not
known where Moses and Molly are buried, but probably at Yadkin County, North Carolina. Chrissie married John
William Green Binkley (1830-1912).”
The chronology above was not found in this order. Research on FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com yielded
information in random order. Your research is probably scrambled also.
Names vary from document to document. Tesh was spelled Teish and Tush.
Counties listed for Jane are Stokes, Forsyth, Yadkin, and Davie. [Some families moved often.]
Jane adopted a child in addition to giving birth to 8 children. She was listed wth head of the household until 1920 when
she was just a widowed mother living with her son’s family.
Her husband had three first names but was commonly referred to by the third name which is not listed in census.

From The Civil War Roster of Davie County, North Carolina, section 83:
“Binkley, J.W., Private, Company G, 7th Regiment, Confederate Cavalry,
Company D, 16th Battalion, N.C. Cavalry. J.W. enlisted in Davie County on
September 3, 1862, with the rank of Private. He transferred from Company
G, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry on July 11, 1864, while absent
“detailed with artillery.” He was absent on detail through August 1864, and
present or accounted for through October 1, 1864. [Section 84 of same book
has James H. Binkley]
There are many online family trees which include Jane and her husband.
Always verify that the information is correct instead of just copying data.
Death certificates were required in 1913, so the obit of 1912 at the right
would mean that there is probably not a death certificate. This obituary is
typical of previous ones – no year is listed. A clipping sometimes just
mentioned the day of the week. Luckily, current obits give the full date. June 26, 1912 article from Davie Record

FAMILY MEMBERS
On Ancestry, I found a family tree that included Jane. The great grandson and his
email address were included. He gave me the name of another family member/researcher in
Winston-Salem who emailed me this photo of Jane at the right.
LOOSE PAPER FILES AT DAVIE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
I found a folder marked Binkley at the history room, but the few pages were not
helpful. But there were a bunch of pages that had been misfiled. Most of them were about the
Bailey family. One of these pages is on page six of this newsletter. Bailey Street in
Mocksville, latitude/longitude of 35.892.829, -80.553662, at one time was the location of
beautiful homes of prominent people in Mocksville. All these homes are gone now, and there
are empty factories used for storage and recycling. Mr. Bailey was an attorney. An original
letter in the folder described the Baileys. It was written by Alice Lee in 1987 from her
Charlotte home. She is special to me, and it was neat to see her handwriting. I wrote about her

Another serendipity !!
ANOTHER “COINCIDENCE”
We have a new member of our group who lives in Michigan. I emailed him to tell him that I was mailing his
order to him. After a “conversation” back and forth by email, we figured out that my cousins (my father’s line) are his
cousins (his mother’s line).
YADKIN HERITAGE BOOK THREE DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 31
The final deadline to submit articles and photographs for the third volume of The Heritage of Yadkin County,
North Carolina, is Saturday, October 31, 2015, according to Andrew L. Mackie, chair of the book committee. “It’s time
to wrap up the articles,” Mackie said, “if we expect the book to be published in time for delivery next summer.”
Mackie said the book committee is pleased with the county’s response to date. He thanked every contributor for
submitting an article or photograph. As a result, the book will contain over 350 articles about family households, military
veterans, law enforcement, churches, schools, businesses and farms, and volunteer organizations. The book committee
has begun proofreading the articles and photographs, but needs more volunteers to finish the job before the end of the
year, when the book will be mailed to the publisher.
Mackie said that the deadline for pre-publication orders of the book will also end on October 31. The cost of the
book is now $58.71, with tax. The cost will be higher on November 1. Since a limited number of books will be
published, the best way to reserve a copy is to buy one now. “Do not wait until the books arrive,” he said.

This is another example of Serendipity. There were several things misfiled in the Binkley loose papers folder. This one
has some interesting wording and descriptions. There is no date, no source of submitter, or page in a book. Message: “in
your own papers, have you given citations as to source of document, library, book, date, etc.?”
