SPOTLIGHT ON A MEMBER WHO PROVIDED SO MUCH RESEARCH MATERIAL
In June of 2015, president Linda Leonard and treasurer Marie
Roth presented a Life Membership to member Nancy Kelly Murphy.
Nancy was editor of the newsletter for many years, she volunteered in the
history room of the library, and she compiled many books, including two
marriage books, two cemetery books with help from society members,
and four census books. Researchers of Davie County owe a big thanks to
Nancy for all this hard work. The books she wrote were given to the
society to sell. They are listed on page 7 of this newsletter.
NEW BOOK: Davie County in the Spanish-American War has just been completed.
Fifteen men from Davie County served in the Spanish-American War or the resulting war in the Philippines. This
65 page book profiles these 15 men and their family histories. Those who served were:

This short war happened 117 years ago from 2015, so it was difficult to find relatives, photographs, and records.
The war itself was very confusing as it involved five areas in the world. Sources were:
US census and military records from Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Fold3

The next two pages of this newsletter are the biography of a young man from Cana township in Davie County.
These are pages from the new book. The book costs $15 plus postage of $5. See page 7 for information on ordering.
Watson Lowery delivered the mail in Cana. He also took the census in 1940. When he delivered the mail, he
used his horse and buggy. His grandson told me that Watson’s son would borrow the horse and buggy on weekends and
go courting. That worked well, except that the horse stopped at every mailbox.
Boone Stonestreet lived to be 102. He retired at 98 from Mocksville Savings and Loan. William Murchison
served in the Spanish-American War and WWI. He was in the military for 41 years and retired as a colonel.

There is no 1880 census, 1890 census, military record, obituary, or death certificate for him.
[He was born a few months after the 1880 census was taken; there is no 1890 census to search; and he died in 1905 before
the required death certificate law was in effect starting in 1913.]

Information from Cana Connections and Family Connections: Harry was the seventh child of James Harrison and
Elizabeth Amy Cain. When he was 17, he volunteered to go to fight in the Spanish-American War by adding a
year onto his age. Boone Stonestreet, who was 18 and of legal age, also joined. Harry was trained in California
and sent to the Philippines with Boone. His father wrote to the officials in Washington telling them his son’s true
age. Harry was discharged and sent back to California. He remained there until 1905. He and a girlfriend had
staked a claim on some land in California. In 1905, he rode the train to come visit his family in Cana. While
home, he was helping at a family sawmill. A board hit the top of the spinning saw and was thrown into his face.
The next day he died of this injury. He was buried at Eaton’s Church Cemetery on the next day “in the midst of
many sympathizing friends and a beautiful display of flowers.” (Family Connections)
Cana Connections: “Harry was described as a handsome, charismatic young man, who was admired by all who met him.
His family and all who knew him were devastated by the accident and by the irony of the fact Harry was removed
from a war zone only to be killed at a saw mill in Mocksville.”
