CAN YOU HELP OUR MEMBERS WITH RESEARCH?
We have a new member who wrote a letter to us with these comments and questions. If
you have information to help him, please respond to 3 Greenbriar Road, Keene, NH 03431 or to
Mannlls@ne.rr.com
My name is David A. Mann. I was researching Christopher Gist and most Internet sites state that
Daniel Boone was Christopher's neighbor while he was living in Rowan County, North Carolina,
also that the Boone family arrived in Rowan County about 1751. I am a Land Surveyor and it is
reported that Christopher Gist came from a family of Land Surveyors. At the time the Gist &
Boone families were in Rowan County the younger Gist children would have been the same age
as Daniel Boone. As you are probably aware Daniel Boone became a Land Surveyor in Kentucky
and maybe elsewhere. I am trying to find out where the Gist family and Boone family lived in
Rowan County, near the Yadkin River. Were their homesteads near each other? Again, another
web site stated that the Gist and Boone families lived in the Old Rowan County in the part that is
now Davie County. I am hoping that someone might know where these two important families
may have lived. Were there public schools at that early date and if so are there lists of the
students? It is also stated that this portion of Old Rowan County was evacuated during the early
1750's due to Indian raids. Where did the town's people find refuge? It would be nice if this was
all laid down in one concise history; however, I have a feeling that will not be the case. I am
hoping for guidance and for references to source material and individuals that may be able to
assist me in my pursuit.

aengelhardt@carolina.rr.com is collecting information about any Elmores, but in particular the
parents of David Nathan Elmore who are John & Mary Elmore. She is also collecting Elmore
photographs.
At our September meeting discussing old photographs, one person brought a studio photo
that had this inscription: Home View Co., Peeler NC. The NC Gazetteer does not list this town.
Anybody know anything about it?
DAVIE COUNTY GUARDIAN ACCOUNTS, 1844 - 1868
From the North Carolina State Archives (CR 033.510.10)
Transcribed by Grace Wight and Marcia Masser
gdn is the abbreviation of “guardian for”
Guardians were appointed to be responsible for
orphans, children of living parents when the children were
receiving money from estates – or other sources – such as
grandparents. The guardian was in most cases a relative
or neighbor. A parent could be appointed as guardian of
their own children if they were inheriting from the
mother’s estate or from another relative.
Orphans were mostly fatherless; sometimes both
parents were deceased. A child fourteen years and older
could select their own guardian. This still holds true
today. Anyone under twenty-one years of age was called
“infants”.
Guardians were required to submit a yearly report to
show expenditures for the child’s schooling, medical,
clothing, room and board, etc. If the guardian was not
doing his job, he could be replaced. In most cases the
guardian either moved, died, or was not capable of doing
his job.
More can be found on guardian affairs in the N.C.
State Archives. There are guardian records with much
more detail than presented here. These records are
Guardian Records 1838-1918. These are arranged by
family surname. Any interest by anyone who might have
a record prior to the formation of Davie County in 1836
should consult the Rowan County records.
