The Davie County Historical and Genealogical Society held its August meeting with
eleven members and two visitors in attendance.President Aubrey Wensil called the meeting to
order, recognizing Randall Jones, author, and Andrew Mackie, President of the Yadkin County
Historical Society.
There was general discussion regarding the celebration of the 2006 anniversary of the
wedding of Rebecca Bryan and Daniel Boone. Annnette Ratledge will be available for art work
and a play could be presented at the Brock Performing Arts Center. It is possible that a drama by
Frances Casstevens would be available. Frontier crafts, flint-lock rivfles, pottery making,
weaving, and vendors would be appropriate. The Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Davie
County Arts Council, and others could help with a budget, publicity, sponsors, and help with the
formation of a Steering Committee.
At the September 27th meeting of the Historical Society, the discussion of plans for the
Boone-Bryan celebration was continued. Active work on the wedding celebration should begin
early in January.

Cyrette Sanford and Aubrey Wensil went to explore the Great Wagon Road tract roadbed
where Francis Lock and a few others held up General Cornwallis for three hours.
Randall Jones was the speaker on September 12th at the Center Community Building.

SPECIAL REQUEST
LTC(Ret.) Sion H. Harrington III has asked for assistance in compiling a roster of North
Carolinians who served in Confederate Naval service in support of the North Carolina Troops
series. He needs the help of historians and genealogists from across the state in identifying those
who served as Confederate sailors or Marines.

1889 J. C. Heitman (female) vs. C. L. Heitman
J. C. Heitman married C. L. Heitman on 1 Dec 1885 in Davie County. Lived together as
husband and wife until April 1886. One child, a little girl. The child is now 18 months old and
lives with the plaintiff.C. L. Heitman indicted in Superior Court in Davidson County on a
felony charge of embezzlement. He deserted the plaintiff and left the state. Plaintiff believes she
has good cause for wanting a divorce. Divorce granted to Julia Heitman.
1880 George Holman vs Susan Holman
Both are resident of Davie County. Lived together as husband and wife until 29 March
1879 until defendant quit bed and board. Defendant had committed adultery with Wesley
Ijames. After separation she has lived in adultery. She has since given birth to a bastard child.
The child was born 11 months after separating. Complaint is grounds for divorce and ordered
dissolved.
1907 John Howard vs Ida Howard
Married in Davie County 19 Feb 1898, John Howard says that Ida violated the marriage
by committing adultery with Robert Dulin and others.
1895 Wesley Ijames vs M. J. Ijames
Legally married 26 Oct 1879 in Davie County. M.J. Ijames violated the marriage by
committing adultery with different men. She left the marriage and went to western N.C. and

began living in adultery and has given birth to two children. Wesley asks to a complete divorce
and custody of their six children.
1868 Eliza McCoy vs Josiah McCoy
Eliza and Josah married in Davie County Nov 1844 and lived together until Sept 1850.
He left her on pretense of going to sell some Patent Right and would return in 12 months. She is
the mother of two children...boy 19 years old and girl 17 years old. Josiah is believed to be in
Sparta, TN and remarried.

CHURCH RECORDS

... vestry records, minutes and registers are colonial church records, and perhaps more than
anyplace else MUST be sought out for research of family lines from VA, MD, NC, SC, GA,and
DE.I will attempt a summary and do not wish to quarrel about the details.If any of you
subscribers wish to add to these remarks,PLEASE do so.
The Anglican Church (of England) was the legally designated religion of the Southern
Colonies, and to a lesser degree early was active in all the original colonies.Indeed for the 170
years from Jamestown to the Revolution the church dominated everyday life in the South,
particularly VA.
The church had many semi-governmental duties and activities, those including processioning
of the land, care of the poor and widows, collection of taxes, and care of disabled and orphaned
or bastard children.It collected a tithe and assessments regularly from all who met the
requirements to so pay and lived within the parish, those sums paying for the preacher and all
the church activities and expenses, and attendance at services was required throughout the 17th
and early 18th Centuries.Go to church or be fined.

All the land within the colonies mentioned was divided into parishes which were NOT
bounded the same as the counties. Each parish had a vestry, prominent and affluent citizens -
who governed that parish.
Each parish was to keep a vestry "record" (minutes), which was a detailed (usually) running
statement of the activities, expenditures, processions, and such as fines that were entered
upon/levied upon the parishioners.In addition, the parishes were to keep a "register", that
record being more a day book of the minister/preacher and readers than anything else.
Therein were entered the births and baptisms, deaths, marriages, dates of significance to the
congregation, and unusual or remarkable events that affected the parishioners.
With the coming of the Revolution (and Governor Thomas Jefferson), the Anglican church as
a controlling entity ended, and though many congregations continued to serve parishioners,
most were dissolved or simply abandoned.
It is a pity that how-to book after book and seminar after seminar and lecture after lecture
are written, given and sponsored by those who purport to be "experts" with next to nothing said
about parish records, where those are, and how such should be used.
As said, I feel that no researcher can write or say that he/she has diligently searched any
family line unless and until he has exhausted all parish records that may yet be found for all the
"wheres" of his family.Here again is a list I have gathered, mostly from material in the VA
Library, that may serve your efforts in learning which parishes hosted and served which counties
and whether or not any records of those particular parishes remain. I have previously set out the
parishes of GA, SC and NC for various websites. Here are those for VA.
