' Peace to'hisi /-> 2.f qSo Prof. John Mi2203* Dies Suddenly fn ! His Schooli 'oom i The community was shocked on . last Wednesday, Feb. 5th, to learn of the sudden death of Prof. John Minor, which occurred while he was. teaching at the Eldora Con solidated School near Mt. Airy. The deceased had suffered from high Blood pressure for several years, his death -resulting from this. He was the son of the late Zerrell Amy Minor, and waa born near Ferk Church on Oct. 10th, 1872, being in his 58th year at the time of his death. Hia great desire for an education was shown at an early age, and he waa always a diligent student. He was one of the favorite pupils of Prof. J. T. Alderman at Fork Aca demy, and their friendship con tinued throughout his life. Mr. Minor next entered Wake Forest College, where he made a fine re cord, graduating in the class of 1894. He was especially profici ent in languages, being piaster of six, and in his' later life one of his favorite pastimes was to read his Virgil. While in college he was converted, and joined the Bap tist Church there, and was always a faithful member wherever he made his home. He was quiet a-d unassuming in his manner, devoted to his family, upright in his life, and had the respect o^ every community in which he liv ed. After his graduation he taught in the schools of Davie and Yadkin for sceral years, and prepared many pupils for college. On Dec. 25th, 1905 he was married to Miss Camilla ^11, of Advance and to this union were bom six children, three of whom, Lucile, John, and Lillian died in infancy. For about twelve years he was boofc-keep<ir lor the Mocksville Enterprise Company, and in 1916 became editor of the Mocksville Enterprise, being in this capacity .for several years. He later took ' up teaching' again, a calling for which he. was highly qualified, and ! at the time of his death was en tering upon his 20th year in this work.. In September 1929, Mr. Minor moved his family to Mt. Airy, where he had accepted the position of principal of the Eldora Cnnsolidaiie() School. Thi? is one of the newest schools in Surry County, and in the few months of Mr.'Minor's leadership had made great progress, having made the highest daily average of any school in the county during the first semester! Thus he faithfully carried on his chosen profession until the last hour of his life, having just led the chapel exer- I cises and worked an example for a pupil when the end came. A short service wa.«r held at the home in Mt. Airy on Thursday, Jan. 6th py Dr. Jacobs, pastor of the Fi^K' Baptist Church, assisted by Millard Booe, of Haymore Hemi! orial Church. The body was t&^n ' brought to Mocksville where the funeral service was conducted at the Baptist Church at 2 o'clock,! by the pastor, Rev. W. B. Waif, I assisted by Rev. Charles Utiey, of! Mt. Airy, a schoolmate of the de- j ceasid at Wake Forest. The ! hymns sung were "Nearer My God To Thee," Asleep In Jesus," and . "Some Day We'll Understand." A' large concourse of s.vmpathizing i friends was present both at the ^ church and at Fork Church ceme- ; tery where the interment took place, the Odd Fellows Lodge of Smith G*ove being in charge of the services there. The pallbear ers were; J. F. Hanes, J. B. John- stone, Jacob Stewart, B. I. Smith, i T. I. Caudell, and T. M. Hendrix. • The many beautiful floral designs were carried by Misses Jessie 1^ > <r- Waff, Patsy Clement, Annie Car ter, Inez Ijames, Laura Allen, and Mrs. Frank Huneycutt. Surviving are his widow and three children ! Miss Katherine Minor, a teacher MH the Forsyth County schools, Thomas and LaVada Minor, of Mt. Airy, one brother, George Minor, of Fork Church, and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Talbert, of Advance. We extend our deep sympathy to the bereaved family in their great sorrow. .. i L- 13 - I ^ 3c7 Fimcrai Prof. J.Minor.; Funeral services for Prof. JohnMi;;or, who died suddenly lasL Wednesday ii o ning in his office m the school building -n wbic'i he was teaching, seven inile.s from Mt Airy, were held in the Mocksville Baptist church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. The funeral ser-*' vices were conducted by Rev ChasH. UtIey. of Mt Ai, y.Assisted by Rev. W. B. Waff, of this city, and Rev. Mr. Turner, pa.-^tor of the Fork Baptist church. The body was laid to rest in Fork cemetery following the funeral services. Prof. Minor was 57 years of age, and was a native of Davie county. He moved to Mt. Airy from Mocks-jville last August, and was superin- hendent of a rural school in Surry I county. Suiviving is the widow I two daughters. Misses Katbryn jand Lavada, and one son, Thomas :Woodrow. One biother. George, of Folk, and cue sister, Mrs. Q. Talbert, of Advance, survive. The death of Prof. Minor was a shock to.his many friends in and around Mocksville.
