The Buildings The first church building was a log building erected after 1819 on a lotnearthepresenthomeofW.A.Ellis,Sr.This was later sold to the Negro people of the community and moved to the site of Zion A.M.E. Church. hi 1874,a second church building was begun on the ground of the presentchurchsite. This one-room church was completed May 11,1875.ThetrusteesofthischurchwereThomasMaxwell,Willis F.Smith,John A.Lefler,John Wagner,A.T.Grant,Sr.,and W.H.Hobson.The first church conference held in Liberty Church was held February 13,1897,with Rev.W.H.Vestal in the chair. This church served the communityuntil1925.While J.M.Greene was pastor, the church was remodeled and three classrooms were added.Later three more classrooms were added. This building was sold May 6,1961,for $300 to Bill Pruitt and Tom Ames,Negro men.The bell and one set of steps were not sold withthechurch.Fc^Cope bought the bell for $25. In 1935,while M.G.Ervin was pastor,a hut was build on propertydonatedbyArthimandGrantDaniels. This was build to be used for social activities for the church.Later it was used for the Children’s Division of the Sunday School until 1961. A building fund was started in 1954 while Rev.B.C.Adams was pastor,on February 12,1959,the building committee of 13 members, under the >- CO a ■ r' 2 3 CD cj r' C3 CQo j- O. .ix> a -2-Q U' UJ c; ScJ leadership of Rev.R.G.McClamroch,met to make plans to buyadditionallandforachurchsite. This land was purchased for $1,500fromBaxterGibson.In May of 1959,the ground was graded andpreparationwasbegunonamuchneededEducationalBuilding.JackCopeservedastreasurerforthebuildingfunduntilhemovedtoGeorgia.He was replaced by C.F.Boger.H.Z.Howard servedchairmanoftheFinanceCommittee.Rev.R.G.McClamroch,J.G.McCullough,C.C.McCullough,and C.F.Boger were appointed topurchasesupplies. The Corner Stone was laid January 10,1960.OnEasterSunday,April 1,1961,the first service was held in this beautifulbuilding. The first Revival was held the first week in April by Rev.PaulLeatherman.The first funeral was that of Mrs.Virginia CaudellApril9,1961.The first wedding was held November 12,1961,unitingAnnNolleyandDavidHancock. The facilities here at Liberty have been made possible through thededicatedandsacrificialeffortsofitsmembers, heeding the inspirationsandguidanceofHimonHigh. Our prayers are that for years toLibertyChurchwillbeaBeaconLighttoallwhocomethisway. Church Membership The earliest record of the Liberty Church is from an old MocksvilleCircuitbook. The following members were listed from 1848 thru 1849: John Tillet,Pastor;James N.Brock;Mary N.Brock;Margaret Hudson, later transferred to Concord;John Maxwell;Mary Keller;Martha Murray;Moses Wagoner;Ann Golding;Sarah Daniel;Ester Wagoner;ElizabethTurrentine;Sarah E.Foster;Sarah A.Lefler;S.Harris;Mary A.Daniel;Penelope Meroney;and Lshmael Williams. In 1859 there were 42 members.Liberty Church, with a membership of 322,now has the distinction of beingoneofthelargestandstrongestMethodistchurchesinDavieCounty. The Sunday School is completely organized with classes for all age groups. A Ladies Aid Society was organized in June,1920,with ei^t members, including Mrs.C.L.Cook,President;Mrs.Lydia Creason,Vice President;Alline Everhardt,Secretary;and Mrs.Lelia Daniels,Treasurer. The other members were Mrs.John Lefler,Mrs.J.W.Carter,Mrs. Henry Daniels, and Mrs.G.W.Everhardt.This Society did a great work in the church. It was changed to the Woman’s Society of Christian Service in 1939. ■ Music Music has always played an important part in the spiritual growth of a church.Mr.Frank Everhardt was song leader for many years. The first organ was bought about 50 years ago.Mrs.Abbie Williams was the first organist. In 1937,the first piano was bought for $85.We are grateful for all who have given of their time and talent in leading the music of the church. Parsonage In 1950 Liberty and Concord, which had been a part of the Davie Circuit, became a two-point charge.A nine room brick parsonage was built by the two churches. The cost of this building was estimated at $10,000 with Liberty paying two thirds of the cost. The upstairs was not finished until a later date.Rev.G.W.Fink moved into the new parsonage in the fall of 1950.In 1956 a central heating system was installed. The parsonage was redecorated in 1962.New furnishings and wall-to-wall carpet were added in the living room. Ministers The spiritual growth of Liberty Church can be accredited to the leadership of the ministers who have served as her leaders. We regret that we cannot give a complete record of all the ministers;yet,we do give all available as follows:uJ CI7 atJamesReid G.F.Rounds T.A.Boone John Tillet W.L.Grissom P.G.Barrett G.W.Hardison E.E.Smith M.H.Vestal H.L.McLaren W.C.Wilson P.E.Parker A.J.Burrus B.A.York Rev.
