Coolcemc is a cottonmill village, one of the Edwin Cotton Mill group.It has a population of around 2.500people,and is the largest town inDaviecounty.It borders Rowancounty,and secures some of itsoperativesfrom"across the river."To this town the Rev.John W. Foster.Presbyterian minister,camein1931,finding a congregation offi5members,a Sunday school of almostahundredmembers,and a plain frame church building.Atthetimethecongregationwasstomewhatdiscouragedwiththeout look._.With faith,enthusiasm,and vigorouseffoi-t the Rev.Mr.Fo.sterandhiswifewenttowork,andthestoryisfardifferenttoday.There are 225 members of thechurch;more than 200 enrolled intheSundayschool;a handsomeandcommodiousmansehasbeenbuiltalongsidethechurchbuilding,and the church building Itselfhasundergoneextensiverepairs,and had several additions (nr Sundayschoolandrecreationpur- pose.s..But this physical growth is onlyanoutwardandvisiblesignoftheinnerlifeofthecongregationandcommunity.The i>cople in theparishareproudoftheirachievement.are full of encouragementanddeeperfaithenrichedbythesatisfactionsofsubstantialachievementandhealthygrowth.Not only has this congregationprofiledbytheministryofthisclergyman,but the entire communityhasbeenhelped.Mr,Fosterdoesnotbelongtothatgroupofministerswhoregard"ringingofdoorbellsasawasteoftime.He and his good wife arc on thegoallthetime,calling on theirmembers,and'visiting the sick,needy,and the unchurch^.Nor.has any charge'ever been lodgedagalnilMr.Foster that he-buildsuphiaowneongregallonattheex*pefise of other,communions.He Utnandoutofthesehomesasministerandfriend,blit not lor purposesofproselyting.The people in Coolecmee somehowfeel,wllhoutxegard to chucohaffiliation,that ftr.FosUr ●belongstothem...Such a feeling Is notalfangek.as.hU mlnistry ls devoted,to uniflfllh'sch/lco and the ?om-}mflnltjf htt'learntd IhaMtupbn^nimi'^lor the ^.I'Vlces bt.a,kindly 'paifcr,and warm,lympa-tIheticfriend.
