He was Bermuda Run Town Manager for 13 years, and has 30 years in public and private work.Rollins is executive director for Resource Institute, a locally based non-profit that works with local governments and other s to enhance resources by restoring streams, rivers, and wetlands. Approximately half of Roll-ins’ working life has been in the private sector, much focused on strategic planning, client devel-opment, and customer service. This has given Rollins a unique perspective on creating public/private partnerships, said Interim Town Manager Lynn Trivette. He remains committed to the premise that government works best when it collaborates with the private sector and community groups to solve problems and achieve goals. Working within organiza-tions to topple silos is one of his passions and strengths, she said.Rollins has been a resident of Mocksville for 22 years. He has been active in his church and a number of civic organizations. A former Mocksville Town Commissioner who serves on the town planning board, he ma-jored in business administration at High Point University and has training through the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government.Rollins will oversee a staff of 33 full-time and 20 part-time employees. He will follow former Town Manager Ken Gamble, who retired in December.“The Mocksville Town Com-missioners have worked hard to find the best candidate to fill the role of town manager,” said May-or Will Marklin, brother-in-law of Rollins. “After a thorough search process, they have selected the former town manager of Bermu- By Mike BarnhardtEnterprise Record One man is dead and a murder suspect in custody after an at-tack near Cooleemee Wednesday night, March 5.Charged with murder is Zach-aria Shade Shrewsbury, 25, of Fork-Bixby Road, Advance. Zacharia Shrewsbury Crowbar attack leaves 1 dead; 1 in custody By Mike BarnhardtEnterprise Record Three Davie men have been charged with exploiting minors in a regional investigation that has been ongoing for months. It started last November, when investigators from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant to a residence on Calvin Lane. The N.C. In-ternet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the SBI, Homeland Security and the Liberty Police Department were involved in the investigation.Multiple electronic devices were removed from the home, said Davie Sheriff J.D. Hartman. Those devices were examined to gain evidence related to child sexual abuse material.Dakota Lee Barnett, 35, of Calvin Lane, was charged with four counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor, and was taken into custody in lieu of a $150,000 bond. After the devices were searched, he was charged with an additional eight counts of third-degree sexual eploitation of a minor, and his bond was in-creased by $50,000.“The investigation into Bar-nett’s activities is ongoing, and Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Daniel Boone Memori-al monument on the square in Downtown Mocksville on Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m. Farmington's Joseph Hampton Rich created and distributed hun-dreds of such arrowhead shaped markers across the country from 1913-1938. Everett G. Marshall will speak at Sunday’s event. He researched this subject for six years and wrote a book titled, “Rich Man: Daniel Boone.” It describes in 13 chapters, and 323 pages, the biography of Mr. Rich, his objectives for the Boone Trail Highway, its connection with the Battleship Maine (each metal marker was made with sal-vage from the famous battleship), how the Boy Scouts related, plus the documentation on the 135 known original sites, and photos of the 46 surviving monuments (There’s another in Farmington at NC 801 and Farmington Road. Visit http://www.trading-ford.org/rich_man.html to order the book. The event is hosted by the Davie County Historical and Genea-logical Society and all are invited. Live music and refreshments will be part of the celebration. If you are a relative of Mr. Rich, contact Marcia Phillips at mphillips@daviecountync.gov. Family members will be recognized. Bring a chair if you wish to sit through the half hour or so pro-gram. If raining, it will happen at the Davie County Public Library on North Main Street.Rich placed 358 metal tablets between Virginia Beach, Va. and San Francisco, Calif. He established the Boone Trail Highway Asso-ciation to further his project. From the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s, the association published a newsletter which detailed the efforts to install new monuments.Rich chose to celebrate Daniel Boone’s trail because of its contri-bution to the settlement of mid-America by way of the Boone Trail and because he was captivated by the pioneer spirit of that era.Over the years, many of the markers have been lost to highway construction and urban sprawl. In the late-1990s, a group of descen-dants of Daniel Boone established the Boone Trail Highway and Me-morial Re-Association with the intent of locating the markers which remained. Approximately 60 have been located, with two in Davie County. The Mocksville marker reads: :This Memorial Erected to Dan-iel Boone, hunter, explorer, backwoodsman, soldir (sic), surveyor, roadbuilder, legislator, magistrate. He lived and learned woodcraft in Davie County 1750-85. Squire and Sarah Boone, parents of Dan-iel Boone, pioneers of the Yadkin whose remains are interred one mile N.W. in Joppa Graveyard; coming from PA 1749. Erected by the Boone Trail Highway Association.”The Farmington marker reads: “Daniel Boone lived 2 miles S.E. His parents are buried 8 miles S. Golfing and fishing have gone by the way-side. Laying in the sun to get a tan for a beach trip? No way.But still, I love the outdoors. If I can’t be in it, I want to see it. Indoors, open the blinds during daylight hours. At work, I demand a window. As a result, I should live to the ripe old age of 110. At least accord-ing to Infographic, I’ll live longer than those who live their lives in-doors with no natural light.Admittedly, I’m not normal. In more ways than one.So far this winter, North Caro-linians spent an average of 27 hours outdoors. That’s about three hours and four minutes per week.At least quadruple that for me.Of course, cold weather was the No. 1 reason people stayed indoors. I agree. As a young man, I braved the nastiest of weather elements. If it was 5ºF with a 30 mph wind, I wanted to know how that felt; and if I could withstand it. Nowadays, I thought it was because I became smarter, I stay indoors. My reasons: too tired, too old. Little did I know that would cut down on my life ex-pectancy.A 90,000 person study showed that those soaking in the brightest daylight hours had a 17to 34% low-er risk of dying early compared to those stuck in dim, shadowy rou-tines.The No. 2 reason North Carolin-ians stayed inside more: 17 percent blamed the early darkness in the evenings. Others reported packed schedules, while others just enjoy being inside more.I’m part of the 80 percent of folks who seek outside light when stuck inside; hence my mandate for an office with a window. In fact, my favorite place to work is on the back patio with a laptop computer. So what if I’m distracted by birds and squirrels, traffic and neighbors. At least I’m extending my life span. The study proves a paradox of man. Almost all respondents said they felt better when exposed to natural sunlight more, yet they either weren’t willing or able to change their schedules. That was until they were told that natural sunlight could help them to live longer. Then, almost all said they would change their schedule. And we wonder why our poli-tics are so filled with strife.Maybe if there were study to prove that we would live longer if we refrained from devisive politics.I need to go back inside. That sun is getting to my brain.- Mike Barnhardt Sunlight, outdoors help us to live longer To the editor:It is with amazement, I look at some of the current events in our nation; even in our state, seeing such infringements like gerryman-dering and changing the role of the governor in the selection of State Board of Election members causes some consternation. In addition, a questionable bill in the North Carolina Legislature: House Bill 127 impedes citizens’ help with voter registration. Another: House Bill 171/Senate Bill 227 proposes diversity, equi-ty and inclusion (DEI) be discon-tinued in the public-school K-12 curriculum. Is the interpretation of DEI, in this situation, correct? Ar-en’t teachers capable of balancing affirmation of one group of students without making another group feel guilty about past history? Now, take a look at workplaces where diversity, equity and inclu-sion have rectified systemically de-nied opportunities for groups who were once excluded. One wonders, if more atten-tion had been given to the fact that White females have greatly outpaced all other groups in their advancements under DEI, would we be this far in turning back the clock? I would think they’d be the first to ask who’s doing the evalu- ating as far as merit is concerned. In addition, in a Vanderbilt Graduate School of Management article, the results of a Harvard Business Review Study reported: companies that increased DEI had better performance and results; plus, corporations had higher prof-it margins. Looks like merit rather than tokenism to me. Who, then would replace merit with loyalty?Alice Garrett Brown, Mocksville To-ma-to or To-mah-to?By Julie Terry CartnerSmiling at her 10-year-old daughter, Jean Winfrey asked the usual question. “Hi, Shawn, how was your day?” Expecting the usu-al, fine, she was unprepared for her daughter to burst into tears.“Terrible,” Shawn wailed, then ran to her room. Giving her a few minutes to calm down, Jean then knocked gen-tly on her daughter’s door. “Do you want to talk about it?” she asked as she cracked the door open, even knowing the response she’d get.“No.” Jean waited. “It’s just that…” Jean saw that as the open-ing it was. She walked over to Shawn’s bed and rubbed her back, waiting. It didn’t take long. Soon Shawn’s tale of woe came pouring out. “It’s Jackie. I hate her.” “How can you hate her, Honey, she’s your best friend.”“Was.” Shawn mumbled.Jean waited patiently.Soon the words came pouring out. It was a tale of, well, to Jean’s mind, a tale of ridiculousness, but she was wise enough to keep that thought to herself. It wasn’t ridicu-lous to Shawn. It all started when Jackie told Shawn she’d be gone for the week-end as she and her family were go-ing to see Jackie’s Aunt Maggie. Except Maggie didn’t say Aunt, like Shawn said it – like Ant, she said it like Awwnt. Shawn laughed at her and said, Awwwwnt? It’s pro-nounced Ant.Jackie then got mad at Shawn making fun of her, and Shawn continued teasing Jackie. The fight continued, quickly bringing up other words like to-ma-to and tom-ah-to and vase and vahze. The arguing escalated, and there might have been a push or two before the teacher separated the two girls. When Shawn finished telling her mom about the argument, she looked at Jean with tear-drenched eyes and said the expected, “I’m right, aren’t I, Mom?”As always, the overriding need to be right, Jean thought. Even ex-pecting the question, Jean pondered her response. If ever there were a teachable moment, this was one. Fighting one’s way through the minefield of pre-teen angst was not for the faint of heart. “Do you know your grandmother’s name?” she fi-nally asked her daughter.“What’s that got to do with any-thing?” Shawn asked.“Humor me,” Jean responded.“Sure,” said Shawn, “It’s Cath-erine.”“How do you spell it?”“C-A-T-H-E-R-I-N-E”“But did you know it can be spelled with a K? And did you know the nickname can be Kat, or Cat, or Cathy, or Kathy, or Kate, or Katie, or even just C or K? “I guess,” Shawn replied. And my name can be Shawn or Sean, and yours can be Jean, or Gene, or Jeanne…”“Exactly,” Jean replied. “Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Jean loved it when Shawn proved her argument for her!“So, what’s your point, Mom?”“Is one spelling more right than the other? Is one nickname better than another? Does it matter wheth-er I say Cath-a-rin or Cath-er-in?”Sensing the trap, but seeing no way to avoid it, Shawn answered honestly. “No, I guess not.”“We pronounce words differ-ently depending on our upbring-ing. One is not more correct than another; they’re just different. Just because you say a word one way and Jackie says it another, doesn’t make one of you right and the other wrong. It’s sort of like hair color, or the color of your eyes, or whether you are tall or short. Nobody’s bet-ter than another because of those outside appearances. Isn’t that what I’ve taught you?”Knowing she was going down, all Shawn could do was agree. “The outside is just like the cover on a book; it doesn’t impact the story inside.”“Exactly,” Mom replied. “Couldn’t have said it better my-self.” She chose to ignore Shawn’s mumble, “that’s because you’re the one who said it.” “What makes people so inter-esting is that we are all different in so many ways. Imagine how bor-ing it would be if we all looked, and spoke, and thought the same way. Instead of insulting and teas-ing people for our differences, we should learn from them. Learn to see the world through other’s eyes, and the world will be a better place.Shawn groaned, once again out-maneuvered by the master strate-gist. “You’re right, Mom. I’ll go apologize now.” Sears CatalogsBy Marie CraigWhen I was a little girl, we would come from Black Mountain down to Statesville several times a year to visit my dad’s relatives. When we were at my grandparents’ home, I would attempt to sit still in the big wicker rocker in the living room, but would get bored after a while. I wish now I had a record-ing of all those conversations when my grandmother would describe her family and her childhood in Alleghany County. It would make my family history research so much easier. After I had been patient for a while, she would hand me the big Sears catalog, and that would satis-fy me for a long time. My favorite pages were, of course, the toy sec-tion. I would get lots of ideas for what I’d like to own. As young parents living near the little town of Walhalla, S.C., we would drive over to the nearby small town in North Georgia, Hi-awassee. There was a Sears catalog store there, and we went over of-ten to order. They would phone us when the merchandise came in, and we’d make the trip again to pick it up. This is very different from our shopping today. But in the meantime, I would study the catalog, and our two sons did also. The catalogs were very entertaining. They were also therapeutic. My former landlady in Franklin NC told me that she enjoyed trying to help people. An older man living near her was so depressed because his wife had died. He couldn’t get interested in anything. My friend took her pre-vious Sears catalog to him, and in looking through it, he decided he would fix up his home with some new furnishings. When he did, some of his grief vanished, and he took an interest in his future. I read one time that Montgom-ery Ward made their catalog a little smaller because when someone at DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, Thursday, March 13, 2025 - 3 ADVANCE FAMILY DENTAL DR. AMY LI & DR. That meant they might pick up the Montgomery Ward book and look through it first. My cousins would take an old catalog, cut out the people and the clothes and use them for paper dolls. I heard a story once about a preacher coming to visit unexpectedly at a home. The mama and the little girl welcomed him into their living room. On the table in front of the couch across the room were a Bible and a Sears catalog. After they got settled, the mama asked her daughter to bring them the book that mama spent so much time reading. She complied and came back with the catalog. I own a replica of a 1908 Sears, Roebuck Catalogue that has 1,184 pages. That has been so much fun to look through for many years. The illustrations are black and white line sketches and drawings. You could order a house on pages 595-597. The plans and materials for a two story, six room house cost $725. The larger of the three homes offered was $1995. There is a section in north Asheville NC of homes that were ordered from Sears. A beautiful black polished steel range weighing 520 pounds which burned wood cost $29.75. Gorgeous, huge hats for women ranged from 62 cents to four dollars. Mail carri-ers’ uniforms were $8.90. Hair curling fluid was 14 cents. There were two types of Victrolas which were called Oxford Cylinder Talking Machines and The Type F H Harvard Disc Talking Machine. This second one played records. Actually, I guess this dreaming of things to own is not much different from surfing online for things to order — just a lot different in price. Do the MathBy Gaye HootsWe are a fortunate generation, and most of us are blessed to own homes, have access to medical care, enjoy three meals a day, and have family and friends we love and who return that love. As I get older, I appreciate this more and cherish each day. I hope my family can enjoy this lifestyle and that yours will. I want this for my children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren. I have an adult great-granddaughter and another who is almost a year old who has special needs. My concerns at this point in my life are more for them than for myself, and I believe this is true for most of us. Family members have fought for our freedom for several generations, beginning with the Revolutionary War in the Hoots family. The present political climate is disturbing, and even though I am not affiliated with either party, my concern is the national debt we are leaving for our future generations to pay. The main issues seem to be what the government will or will not fund. The programs are not being paid out of current taxpayer funds but are being put on a credit card for our de-scendants. I and most people my age receive Social Security and have Medicare benefits; some of my family have student loans, and my special needs great-granddaughter is eligible for Medicare. It is a question of time, probably not in my lifetime, but this can’t continue indefinitely. It presently costs more than 392 BILLION a year in inter-est to maintain our national debt of roughly 36 TRILLION dollars, and our 157 million taxpayers are contributing close to 2 trillion a year in taxes. Every taxpayer would have to contribute between 200 and 250 thousand dollars to pay off the debt. We are putting this debt on a credit card for future generations. This is a quote from Wikipedia: “The Forbes 400 Rich-est Americans ranked by net worth. The COMBINED worth of the 2020 class of the 400 richest Americans was 3.2 tril-lion.” This is less than ten percent of the national debt, and the amount is increasing daily. The national debt of the US is almost triple that of any other country other than the Europe-an Union, which is roughly one-half of the US debt. When we look at what we fund, the question is not wheth-er this is a justified need but rather whether it is one we can af-ford and that our descendants will be able to afford and main-tain a comfortable lifestyle. If it is not something we would be willing to put on a personal credit cosigned by one of our children, then think about it because that is exactly what we are doing. The last time a president had a balanced budget was under Bill Clinton, and little attention has been paid to that since. We like to ignore it, but it will come back to bite our children.I don’t have the answer, but Warren Buffett suggested that if Congress could not serve another term if they did not balance the budget, it would be balanced, and I believe him. Congress is paid regardless of the success achieved, so they have little incentive to save the taxpayers' money. Taxpayers are the goose that lays the golden eggs, and the national debt is borrowed against future golden eggs. This is a sad legacy to leave for our children to have to deal with. 118 Hospital st. • Mocksville, Nc 27028 • 336.751.6289 “Because you should want to see your dentist” Accepting Most Major Insurances | RiversFamilyDentistry.com Andrew J. DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, Thursday, March 13, 2025 - B1Sports By Brian PittsEnterprise Record Davie’s softball team is roll-ing with confidence, winning five straight and standing 3-0 in the CPC. “I’m 100 percent pleased with what we’ve done (since a sea-son-opening loss),” coach Nathan Handy said. “We’ve had several good games in a row. The pitching is on, the bats are on fire and we’re able to make the defensive plays when we need them. Ever since that first game it’s been a completely different team.”Davie 6, Forbush 4The War Eagles never trailed in a home nonconference win on March 5. The big inning was the bottom of the fourth, when Raegan Davis, Carleigh Croom, Jadyn Davis and Raelyn Lankford supplied hits to bump a 1-0 lead to 5-0. Riley Potts was dominant as the starting pitcher, but Handy pulled her after four shutout innings so she could rest up for the CPC game at East Forsyth later in the week. Forbush immediately pounced, scoring twice in the top of the fifth and sending up dangerous leadoff batter Ellie Southern with a runner aboard. Potts reentered the circle, coaxed an inning-ending grounder and preserved a 5-2 lead. After that big out, Potts was done after throwing 45 of 61 pitches for strikes in 4.1 hitless innings that included eight strikeouts. “We went in with the mindset that we were going to give Riley a maximum of four innings,” Handy said. “The fifth could have turned out really bad. We got Ellie (on a grounder to second baseman Hanna Steinour). Even if the game went awry, we wanted Riley 100 percent for East Forsyth on Friday.”Davie took another punch from the Falcons in the sixth. Five hits cut Davie’s lead from 6-2 to 6-4 and they had the bases loaded with two outs. It was the moment of truth for R. Davis, who acquitted herself well by striking out the No. 9 batter to strand three runners and getting the last four outs in 14 pitches. “Man, Raegan came through in a big spot,” Handy said. “If we hadn’t have gotten that strikeout, the game could have turned out totally different.”In the seventh, defensive gems by Steinour and Brenna Altiers wrapped it up. Steinour made a running catch with the tying run at the plate. Altiers, the shortstop, squeezed a tricky popup in the grass to close the door. “It was probably 10-12 feet behind first base,” Handy said of Steinour’s play. “Hanna had to go way over there to get it. I believe she went into foul territory to get that pop fly. She made a fantastic play on it. If that ball falls in fair territory, you never know.“It was hit over Brenna’s head and the wind was swirling all night. She went back and ended up having to catch it over her shoulder. The way the wind was blowing, it wasn’t an easy catch.”Lankford (3-4, double, two steals), Croom (2-4), J. Davis (2-3, two RBIs) and Landry Parsons (2-3, double) accounted for nine of Davie’s 13 hits. “Everybody seems to be click-ing,” Handy said. Davie 9, East 1Potts did Potts things and the War Eagle softball rolling right along Please See Softball - Page B4 By Brian PittsEnterprise Record Although there’s no shame in losing to Alexander Central and West Forsyth, Davie varsity base-ball coach Joey Anderson is tired of ending up on the wrong side of close games. In late February, Central edged Davie 5-4 and 14-11, the latter when the War Eagles coughed up a four-run lead. Last week Davie’s frustration was compounded by a 3-2 loss at West Forsyth. West sweeps Davie baseball In the second game with West at home, the Titans just played better en route to a 7-4 decision. “Right now we’re just on the los-ing side of some pretty good games,” Anderson said after Davie fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the CPC. “We’re competing right down to the last inning. Unfortunately, our record does not show how well we’ve been playing.”West Forsyth 3, Davie 2Davie pitchers Tucker Hobbs and Colin Harrison delivered a valiant effort in the CPC opener in Clem- mons on March 4. Hobbs did not allow an earned run in five innings, and Harrison struck out two of three batters in a perfect inning. Both teams finished with five hits, but West came away victorious as its two arms combined for 14 strikeouts. “We played a very good game,” Anderson said. “We just made a couple of unfortunate errors, which were hard plays to make.”In the bottom of the second, West used two walks, an error and a single to take a 3-0 lead. Davie fought back in the fourth. After Coy James led off with a sin-gle, Anderson dialed up the small ball. Hayden Potts dropped a bunt on the first-base side and beat it out for a hit. Hunter Potts laid down a bunt hit along the third-base line to load the bases. On a fullcount pitch, Drew Krause got Davie on the board with a hit. Then Kason Stewart lifted a sac fly to cut West’s lead to 3-2. “(West pitcher Greyson Jones) had his rhythm going, so I changed Please See Sweeps - Page B3 By Brian PittsEnterprise Record The Davie varsity soccer team’s drastically unlucky ways did not go away in the CPC opener at Mt. Tabor on March 6. Last year the War Eagles went 1-6 in games decided by one goal. Last week was the eighth straight Davie-Tabor game that ended as a one-goal outcome; Davie is now 1-7 in those games after a 1-0 defeat. While Tabor improved to 5-0, Davie was playing its first game in 10 days. “It was a very competitive and equal game,” coach Corbin Kope-tzky said. “We didn’t have as many shots as I would like to have had, but we also contained their shot opportunities as well.”The Spartans had outscored four opponents 12-1, but their only goal against Davie came late in the first half. “It was a good play on their part,” Kopetzky said. Among the silver linings were senior Jaden Sink and juniors Lanna Robinson and Mallie Wall. “Jaden, like I’ve said many times in the past, is a force to be reckoned with on that back line,” he said. “Lanna is always able to create scoring chances. She’s really good at backing down defenses and she’s able to make a good turn to get us into good opportunities. Mallie made some good plays. She was all over the place. She’s a bull in a China shop, in a good way.”Davie 4, North 0In a nonconference game in Welcome on March 7, Davie extin-guished North Davidson with little problem. It was a little bit of a struggle in the first half, though, as Davie was held to one goal. “They’re a well coached team,” Kopetzky said. “He’s going to have them aggressive and ready to go. Postell and Fuller Kate Holt had 1 assist apiece as Davie improved to 2-1. “I think it was just a mind-set change (at halftime),” he said. “We hadn’t played since Monday and I think we had to work some rust off. We found our rhythm and that opened up a lot of opportunity for us.“Lanna did what she al-ways does - backs people down and creates a chance.”Hale’s first varsity goal was a left-footed beauty. “She went upper 90 across the goal,” he said. “It was amazing. It’s cool getting to see kids score their first goal. It’s a cool experience getting to see their excitement.”Hale broke into the start-ing lineup, took advantage of the opportunity and was named player of the game. “We’ve been working her confidence up,” he said. “She Number ... Davie was fifth out of six teams as Reagan shot 149, West Forsyth 150, Reynolds 152, East Forsyth 153. Davie (169) and Mt. Tabor (175) rounded out the team scoring. Seager Brooks built on the start to his freshman year with a team-best 2-over 38. He carded 7 pars and tied for seventh out of 40 players. It was Davie’s finest freshman score in three years (Ander-son Beliveau shot 37 at Pud-ding Ridge in 2022). It was Davie’s top individual score in ‘25 through three matches. Juniors Carter Spillman (40), Braxton Hunter (45) and Tyler Shore (46) completed Davie’s scoring. This appears to be a re-building year for the War Eagles, with four of the top 10 players in the CPC in 2024. Evan Owen was 3rd, Beck Owen 5th, Landon Packard 6th and Cooper Drum 10th. Packard was expected back, but he transferred to Reagan for his senior year. Davie’s JV baseball team was blown out 8-1 at West Forsyth and it faced a 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the It’s been a bumpy road for Davie’s tennis team. Against CPC rivals Rea-gan and West Forsyth, the score after singles was 3-3 both times. But both times Davie fell 6-3 after getting swept in doubles. At home against Reagan on March 3, Luke Cranfill, Riley Mallory and Brady Car-ter put up lopsided victories in the four, five and six spots, respectively. “Underclassmen continue to play well,” coach Shane Nixon said. “Luke and Riley are playing very well. Brady has hit last year’s form again War Eagle tennis on a bumpy road and I am so happy with his play. Brady is a tone-setter, and when he plays well it is infectious.”The Raiders, though, took all three doubles to beat Davie for the seventh consecutive time and the 18th time in 22 meetings. “This one is completely on me,” Nixon said. “The compressed schedule and the weather have limited the amount of work we’ve done on doubles, and it is showing. We will get better at doubles - that is a promise.”It was the same story three days later at West Forsyth. Cranfill, Mallory and Carter gained more glory to allow Davie to split singles 3-3. But again Davie (1-3 CPC) had no answers in doubles, partly because it was shorthanded. “West Forsyth is the best team in our conference, and we had guys who had to leave after singles for Band MPAs,” Nixon said after the seventh straight loss to the Titans. “Beating West is tough when your gun is loaded fully, but when you don’t have all your bullets, it is near impossible. Three of our top four left after singles.”Freshmen Cranfill and Mallory are both 4-0 at four and five, respectively. Carter, a sophomore, is 3-0 at No. 6. “The freshmen are not playing like freshmen,” Nix-on said. “Luke and Riley have just come out of the gate on fire. Luke is playing so well and Riley makes every point a battle. Luke’s tennis is at such a high level, I tell him at every switch over: ‘If we are trading ground strokes, we win.’ I watch Riley play so hard and say to him: ‘If you keep playing this way, not many folks will have the stomach to beat you.’ Chris Samet, who’s battled through some sickness, came out in doubles with a partner he hadn’t played a ton with and played out of this world. This freshman class is going to be special. “I don’t want to forget Brady, my lone sophomore. Brady easily could have folded the tent early on. He was as high as No. 3 last year, got beat out in seeding matches and wasn’t in the top six in our first one. But he stuck with it, challenged his way in and hasn’t looked back. Seems like every oppo-nent comes off the court and says: ‘He is just hard to play against.’”Nixon said his top players - Zach Hill, Grayson Busse and Barrett Taylor - are giving it all they’ve got and he hurts for them. “Zach really faced a good player (from Reagan),” he said. “Grayson and Bar-rett each put up a heck of a fight (against Reagan), with Grayson even splitting. These guys are such steady forces that even when they don’t win, they help this young team. My three seniors are struggling to get Ws, but man are they playing hard.” Marketing Solutionsfor YOUR business Newspapers • Special Sections OurDavie.com • Digital Marketing Business Card Directory Including: SEO, SEM, Targeted Marketing, Social and Reputation Management, Website Design, AND MORE. The eight-classification plan represents the first expansion of classifications since 1960, when the NCHSAA moved from three classifications to four.Davie will leave the Central Piedmont Conference, a league it joined in 1985. Davie will be a 7A school in a 6A/7A confer-ence with 7A Lake Norman, 7A Mooresville, 7A South Iredell, 6A North Iredell and 6A Statesville. Most of the current CPC schools will be a part of a 7A/8A conference that will include East Forsyth, Parkland, Reynolds, Reagan, Northwest Guilford and West Forsyth. Boys lacrosse wins Playing its first game in nine days, Davie’s boys lacrosse team won 12-8 at Northern Guilford on March 6. The star was Jack Pisciotta, who had seven goals and four assists - his second 11-point effort in two games. Caswell Moore and Ty Carter had two goals each as Davie improved to 2-0. Owen Blakely had one goal and Carter had two assists. Evan Helms and Moore had one assist. Her goal knotted the score. “She’s going to give 100 percent the whole time,” Ko-petzky said. “Katie can get in a one-on-one with a defender and will play aggressive. That’s what happened with her goal (vs. Tabor). She played aggressive, got around as she was getting bumped and it went right under the keeper.”JV coach Collin Ferebee cited Kyler Quarles, Piper Davis, Gabi Sandoval and Kim Torres. Quarles, a soph-omore who primarily plays center back and occasionally midfield, was outrageously good against the Spartans. “Kyler played an absolute-ly beast of a game,” Ferebee said. “It’s honestly the best single-game JV performance I’ve seen in my six years. “Piper also really opened up the offense, and Gabi and Kim never stop working and make the other girls want to work harder.” fifth when the Titans visited Mocksville. Somehow, some way the War Eagles rallied to salvage a split, scoring five runs in what turned out to be the fifth and final inning due to the two-hour time limit. West 8, Davie 1In the CPC opener in Clemmons on March 4, Davie had as many errors (three) as hits. The Titans only managed five hits - and they were also shaky in the field with four errors - but they still won with plenty of room to spare. Davie’s base knocks came from Easton Sanders (1-2, double, walk), Noah Potts (1-3) and Blake French (1-2, walk, two steals). Davie 5, West 4Three days later at home, Sanders went 2 for 2 and Davie scored five fifth-inning runs on three walks, one hit and one error to steal one from the Titans. The winning rally began with one out in the fifth, when Tanner Steinour walked on four pitches. Then Sand-ers doubled, Carter Cornett walked on a fullcount pitch and Potts drew a free pass to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. After French lofted a sac fly for the second out, Taylor hit a swinging bunt. The pitcher fielded it and threw it away as Davie tied the score at 4. “The pitcher threw it over the first baseman’s head,” varsity coach Joey Anderson said after Davie improved to 2-3 overall. “Taylor went all the way around to third.”The very next pitch got by the catcher and Shenberger cruised home with the win-ning run. “It was big for us to come back and battle in that last in-ning,” Anderson said. “Time was about to expire and we took the lead in the nick of time.”Sanders singled, doubled, walked and stole a base. Tay Settecasi went 1-2 with a walk. Potts had two walks. Davie’s third pitcher of the game had a clean inning as Cornett got three outs in nine pitches. The game was tied at 3 in the bottom of the ninth when Easton Stanley knocked in the winning run. The Wildcats jumped into the lead in the bottom of the 4th after Mooresville com-mitted an error and Colton Norman singled up the mid-dle. Down by one, Norman laid down a sac bunt to help North tie the game at 3 in the bottom of the sixth. Reliever Paxton Broadus earned the win while surren-dering 2 runs over 5 innings. Aydan Shay started on the bump for North, holding the Red Imps to 1 run over 4 innings. Norman (1 for 3) led the way with 2 RBIs. As it turned out, that was all she wrote for Davie’s of-fense. Jones, a junior, piled up 12 Ks in six innings, and West senior reliever Parker Trexler fanned two in the seventh. “(Jones has) got a pretty good slider,” Anderson said. “He uses that slider quite a bit. He pitched against us two years ago in the conference tournament. He didn’t have that kind of velo, but he had that slider at that point in time, and that’s what he basi-cally threw the whole game.”Davie’s hits were spread out among James (1-3, walk), Hayden Potts (1-4), Hunter Potts (1-3), Krause (1-2, walk) and Logan Allen (1-3). West 7, Davie 4A five-run barrage in the top of the second all but sealed Davie’s fate against the visiting Titans on March 7. West did the damage on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman. The outcome was never in question as Davie scored half its runs in the seventh. “We’re playing with a little bit of nerves,” Ander-son said. “It’s like we’re playing not to lose instead of to win. Those are things that we’re working through. This is a very good team. We’ve made some mistakes pitching. We’ve made some mistakes at the plate. And we’ve made some mistakes on the defensive side. Krause and Stewart both went 2-4 as Davie dropped its fifth straight in the series despite outhitting West. Davie is hitting .304 as a team, led by James’ sparkling .733 mark. He’s 11 for 15 with 10 runs, seven extra-base knocks (four doubles, two triples, homer), five RBIs and five walks. Krause is hitting .470 (8-17) and Stewart .333 (5-15). “We are swinging the bats well,” he said. “The biggest thing right now is we’re just not putting them together. We are leaving too many people on base. We’ve got some guys that would be in the lineup, but they’re not due to injuries.“Coy is on fire and Hunter is starting to gear back up (after hitting .428 last year). Drew is hitting the ball really well. Hayden is hitting the ball, but they’ve been right at people.” The War Eagles will try to escape the tailspin this week with two games against Lake Norman. The one on March 13 will be a Throwback Game at Rich Park, which was their home from 1957-2017. The JV/varsity doubleheader will mark Davie’s first game at Mando Field in eight years. “We’re going to keep plugging,” Anderson said. “I feel like we can compete with anybody, we’ve just got to put it all together.” Sweeps ... B4 - DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, Thursday, March 13, 2025 Continued From Page B1offensive attack was beauti-fully balanced in a 9-1 drub-bing of East Forsyth in a CPC clash in Kernersville on March 7. Potts struck out 12 in a four-hitter that saw the se-nior fire 70 of 105 pitch-es for strikes. The offense cranked up in the third as J. Davis, Lankford and R. Davis stroked hits in a three-run rally that broke up what had been a scoreless game. It was smooth sailing from there as Davie put the icing on the cake in the seventh, when Delaney Parsons singled and Croom slammed a two-run homer to cap the scoring. Parsons (2-3) led Davie’s 14-hit attack, all nine batters had at least one hit. At least six bats have looked awfully good through six games. L. Parsons is hit-ting .692 (9-13), followed by Lankford (.588, 10-17), J. Davis (.533 (8-15), Croom (.411, 7-17), Brown (.411, 7-17) and Altiers (.411, 7-17). The home run was Croom’s second of the season. Potts is on fire as well. In 19.2 innings, she’s allowed eight hits, walked eight and fanned 34 while fashioning a 1.42 ERA. “Raelyn has had a really good start to the season,” Handy said. “She had two long fly balls to left field. She has really turned it on. Carleigh is hitting really well. As soon as it left the bat, we knew it was gone. Jadyn is probably the most disciplined batter that we have. When it comes down to a big spot in a big game, that’s who I want at the plate. Addie had a great night. She got a bunt down when we needed a bunt. Brenna has been hitting really well. Every single girl found a way to get on base.”The War Eagles have a four-game winning streak against East. Before that, they suffered 10 straight losses in the series. •••It was a four-game week that started with a double-header at Reynolds on March 4. Davie laid waste to the lowly Demons, winning 18-0 in three innings and 16-0 in two and a half innings. Lank-ford, R. Davis, Shila Jackson and Potts shared the pitching duties and struck out all 18 batters in six innings of work. Davie collected 27 hits and extended its winning streak against Reynolds to 59. She was born in 1974 in Mexico to Pablo Cesar Alba and Maria De Jesus Ponce Aguila. The mother of two adult daughters, she lived with her husband Omar Escobar Ochoa on Cartner Road.Donnie Keller continues to improve but remains in Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Caleb Williams con-tinues to go to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for regular blood checks and to Duke University Medical Center as needed. Since his immune system is weakened, he is limited in his interac-tion with others. Join us in prayer for the Lord's divine healing and blessings upon Donnie, Ca-leb, and other residents who are having health problems. Pray for the family of Sonia as they deeply miss her in life. Continue to pray for the many residents who have the flu and respiratory viruses as the number of such viruses continue to increase in our area. Continue to remember in prayer the victims of the flooding of Hurricane He-lene in our mountains. DST Origin and FactsSome of us may have been awake Sunday morning as our time advanced from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. It is amazing how smoothly the change occurs in our country of over 340 million population. But, it hasn't always been that way. Here are some brief facts:• In 1784 while living in France, Ben Franklin sug-gested that citizens coor-dinate their activities with the sun to save candles and money.• In 1895 George Hud-son, a postal worker and entomologist in New Zea-land, suggested moving the clocks ahead by two hours to give him more time to hunt bugs after his postal work. In 1927 New Zealand's Par-liament adopted his idea and awarded him a medal, although it was initially rid-iculed.• In 1916 Germany en-acted Hudson's idea to save energy needed for fighting in World War I. Many countries in Europe and North Ameri- ca followed suit.• For consistency in the U.S., in March 1918, Pres-ident Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating our country's five time zones and on Easter Sunday that March, "war time" (as it was initially called) was of-ficial in the U.S. But, it was repealed in 1919 as the war had ended.• As the U.S. entered World War II, "war time" was enacted year round from February 1942-September 1945 to save needed energy for the war effort.• In 1966 the U.S. Con-gress enacted the Uniform Time Act, which further standardized time zones and set the dates for DST.• Why does time change at 2 a.m. on the designated Sundays? In 1918 President Wilson wanted the time change each year to be min- imally confusing and dis-ruptive; hence, he chose 2 a.m. when passenger trains in New York City were not moving. Today 2 a.m. is used since that is when most bars, restaurants, stores, etc. are closed and most people are at home and asleep.• Our country is about evenly divided in favorabil-ity of DST. I like it since I love plants and flowers and DST gives me more time to work with them other than very early in the morning. Most farmers hate it since it interferes with feeding/milk-ing times for cows and goats. If you absolutely hate DST but love living in our country, then move to Ari-zona or Hawaii - the only two states that do not switch to DST.Here's hoping you have enjoyed these brief facts about DST as I did.
