In July of 1955, he married his sweetheart, Charlotte Harding of Moravia, New York, and they settled down in Highgate Falls, Vermont. They spent the next 69 years together making memories, raising their daughter, Vicki, and enjoying their cherished grandchildren, Chris and Kasey. Vic and Charlotte moved to Mocksville, North Carolina in 2004, to be close to their daughter, Vicki, and grandson, Chris, where Vic lived out the rest of his life. Vic was known to be a very strong, tough man, with a quick wit, and sharp tongue, yet hidden from most of the world was a tender, gentle, soft heart. He loved animals, especially his dogs, and had a black lab companion by his side most of his 91 years. Vic had a love for the water, and spent much of his life fishing and duck hunting on the Mississquoi River and Lake Champiain. He shared many of these memories with his daughter and side-kick, Vicki, who adored her dad. They loved hunting, fishing, trap shooting, and working on cars together. He always encouraged and empowered her that "girls can do anything boys can do". Vic was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the Intemational Union of Operating Engineers Local 98, and a highly respected Master Mechanic on heav>' equipment primarily for Interstate Constmction throughout New England. He was also a skilled Crain Operator, and constructed, supervised and managed Rock Cmsher Operations in and around Vermont. Vic is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte; his daughter, Vicki Vincelette Kuhn, and her husband Robert, Jr.; his grandson Christopher John Day, and his wife Alya; and his granddaughter Kasey Robinson Ellis, and her husband Andrew; along with numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by all of his siblings, Hazel, Leonard, Aldolph, Frederick, Pearl, Clifford, Mary, Howard, and Edward. There will be no public services. Vic wanted his friends and family to remember him the way he was, larger than life! He also hoped for contributions to the Humane Society in lieu of flowers. Gerrie was born on November 8,1935, in Montclair, NJ, and was the daughter of Eleanor and John Kincs. She graduated from Union High School, Union, NJ, in 1953. She began her career as a teacher and personnel coordinator with the Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School in Newark, NJ. She married Edward Scherlacher in 1956. They attended the 1957 New York Billy Graham Crusade and responded to Rev. Graham's call to "come forward and receive Christ". Following the birth of their first child in 1960, the family moved to East Hanover, NJ. While Gerrie raised her sons, she taught high school Sunday school at the First Presbyterian Church in town. She ministered to many students in class and provided them a place in her home for encouragement and guidance. In 1973, the family began to attend Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Essex Fells, NJ. There, Gerrie taught the high school students. Generations of young people were instructed in the Holy Scriptures through her unwavering passion to prepare and present the relevancy of Christ's power to transform young lives. In addition to her teaching, Gerrie's passion for Christian education inspired her to create and maintain Church Libraries at First Presbyterian Church as well as Calvary Evangelical Free Church. After Christopher graduated high school, Gerrie desired to return to work outside the home. She served as assistant to the Dean of Students and President of Northeastern Bible College in Essex Fells, NJ. Before retiring, Gerrie served as Coordinator of the Pediatric Endocrinology Department of St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ. In 2002, Gerrie and Ed retired to Mocksville, NC. They ministered for eleven years at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. Ed warmly welcomed visitors to the Journey of Faith exhibit as Gerrie fervently served as counselor to those who desired spiritual guidance at the end of the venue. She prayed with hundreds who responded to the Gospel to receive Christ as their Savior. Gerrie was a member of Blaise Baptist Church where she continued teaching the Bible to the women of the church and community. Her living room was both a classroom and place to encourage individuals in their walk with the Lord Jesus. She continued teaching at home even after Ed's passing until her health began to decline in 2024. Gerrie was known as a creative cook to family and friends, but it was her creative preparation of spiritual food through her teaching and counsel that will have results throughout eternity. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years and is survived by her sons; Edward Scherlacher, Jr., Andrew (Beth) Scherlacher, and Christopher (Niemah) Scherlacher; eight grandchildren; and a "quiver full" of great grandchildren. He was bom on January 21, 1938 to Wilda Tate and Wayne Anderson West in Forsyth County. Jerry celebrated his 64th wedding anniversary to his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Ruby Hogue West, just a few weeks prior to her death in January of this year. They had two children, Cindy Mills (Ken) and Jeff West (Juli). He was known as "Paw" to his four grandchildren, Jake Mills (Abby), Jason Mills, Hank West, and Margaux West. He was especially proud of the news that a great grandson is due in November, asking every chance he could about how Abby and "Peanut" are doing. Jerry also cherished being called "Bub" by his sister, Nancy Rowell (Steve). While those were very special titles to'him, Jerry was also affectionately known as "The Mayor" by those who knew him given his infectious personality and love for people. As the saying goes, Jerry never met a stranger. From the tender age of five, Jerry learned that life is hard and unpredictable as he witnessed his father's death in a hunting accident. While that loss would shape much of his life, he was blessed to have a mom and grandmother who were devoted to praying for him. His grandfather, known to him as "Fa Fa", stepped in as his mentor and father figure by loving him, taking him to church, and teaching him the value of hard work. That mentorship would be a model for him throughout his life as he loved to share the lessons he had leamed and always challenged people to turn "lemons into lemonade". Jerry became quite the athlete and later entered Wake Forest University on a baseball scholarship. Wake Forest became more than a school but a home to him given the lifelong friendships he made while a student. He would go on to serve his alma mater as a member of the Deacon Club and later as the President of the Deacon Club. Given Jerry was involved in the ROTC program at Wake Forest, he later served his country in the US Army. Those crucial years of service and training provided him the skills necessary to step into a successful career at RJR Archer after his humble beginnings as "just a country boy" as he would often describe himself. While at RJR, Jerry experienced a life altering event when the private airplane he was on crashed in Naples, Florida. In a later interview about that life changing day, he described the experience with the following quote, which may best depict the man we loved dearly and already miss deeply. "I guess 1 am an eternal optimist. A lot of things happened that day that make me believe there's a greater power that said these guys need another chance. I can assure you that after something like that, you check out your personal priorities." Family time, Wrightsville Beach, fishing, sports, and pancake days with his nephew, Homer Craig, were among his many passions. Staying busy in retirement also included serving on Bermuda Run's town council given his love for the town and the county he had lived in for so long. In the last weeks of his life, Jerry's commitment to the Lord was perhaps the family's most treasured memoiy of him. The Lord's Prayer and the hymn "Amazing Grace" brought him much peace. The family will celebrate his life on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance starting at 3:00 with visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, we believe it will be a beautiful way to honor the man who served so well throughout his life by choosing a family, who is dealing with the demands of caregiving, and blessing them with your time, talents and/or treasures.
