PUBUOj^OCKSVlU-E* NC (J 3— <5 to 4 -5- cT <r cr THE STORY OF CORNATZER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH S 0 1 <e o In the year 1902 a small group of people of the Cornatzer Community bought a house near the present Comatzer-Dulin Fire Department and organized the Cornatzer Methodist Church. Rev. M. H. Vestal became the pastor, and Mr. Tom Cornatzer was named Sunday School Superinten dent after the organization of the church. Follow ing Mr. Vestal as pastors of the church were; Rev W. M. Curtis, Rev. C. S. Patrick, Rev. L. L. Smith and a Rev. Ferrington. In 1911 Mr. Ance Cornatzer gave an acre of land located three-tenths of a mile north of the present church on which to build a church. The old house in which the church was first organized was torn down, moved, and rebuilt at the new loca tion. This church was finished in 1914. Rev. J. M Vamer was pastor, and Mr. Frank Bailey was Sun- ^y School Superintendent at this time. Following Mr. Vemer as pastors of the church were: Rev. E. Myers, Rev. Snow, Rev. J. H. Brendall, Rev. W M Rathbum, Rev. F. E. Howard, Rev. P. L. Smith, Rev. J. C. Gentry, Rev. Trollinger, Rev. L. L. Lyerly, and Rev. Foster Loflin. 1950 The Late Albert E. Bowens pur^ ^a^d 2.4 acres of land and gave it to Cornatzer Methodist Church for the purpose of building a new church. In October of 1950, a meeting of the con^egation was held at the old church and a ui ing committee was nominated and elected by Ihe congregation. The building of the present ?o« completed in B dedicated in 1954 whileKev. Wilham Anderson was pastor. Following as were: Rev. D. D. Broome, Rev. Cameron Dobson, and Rev. Carl Lain. During the time Rev. Lam was here, the new educational building was started, wd was completed in 1966 while Rev. rorrest Church was minUter. Following Rev. as pastors were: Rev. Dwight Ludwig, Rev. R Luther, Rev. Rex Gibhs andRev. Bdl Farmer. OAVIE CO. PUBUC UBRARY MOCKgi/m ^ 2669 In the early 1970 s the present sanctuary was remodel^, new carpet was installed, and new memorial windows placed in the Sanctuary. Three of our members have gone on to become minis- tere: Rev. Derry Bamhardt; Rev. Boh Whiuker; and Rev. Kermit Shoaf. ^me early members of the church were: Joined in 1902 - Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cornatzer; Ida Jane McDaniel Handrix; and Mr. and Mrs. Cicero Smith. Joined in 1904 - Mrs. Agnes McDaniel; Mr. and Mre. R. A. Bowens; Frank BaUey; Sallie Nail; and Minnie McDaniel Melton. Mr. George McDaniel joined in 1909 and Jessie Cornatzer and Mr. Jack Jones joined in 1911. Mrs. Stella Hendrix IS our oldest living church member at this time. • I Sunday School Superintendents haveincluded: Garland Bowens; Kermit Shoaf, Derry Bamhardt; Alvin Whitaker; Bob Hayes; Tim Allen; Bob Whitaker; and Mr. Bob Powe who is our present Superintendent. ^st Treasurers of the church have included: Harold and Reba Frank; Sandra Whitaker; Paul ine and Hathan Allen; and Garnette Nance. Luvada Wisecarver is our present Treasurer. During the past year, the church pews have bwn padded and covered. This project was a joint effort by all members of the church and by per sons who have loved ones who were or are church members. All pews were donated in honor of in memory of loved ones. Also during 1986, Mr. Bob Powe became a Certified Lay Speaker. Some donations to the church from members have included: an acre of land adjoining church property by Garland Bowens, who also donated an organ for the sanctuary. Pulpit set by Albert E. TOwens family; Communion cloths by the Adult Sunday School Class; Baptismal Bowl by Dot and JBob Hayes; Piano for the Fellowship Hall by Paul ine and Hathan Allen; Carpet for the parsonage by Lucille and Spurgeon Foster. April 2024 According to a member and leader of Cornatzer Methodist Church, the transition out of the United Methodist Conference was peaceful and unanimous. The separation came about over doctrinal differences of Biblical interpretation. In 1910 this building was moved to a new location and in 1952 a block church was built on a new site at the cemetery lot. Public Library; Cornatzer Methodist Church First Organized in 1902B}' Betty Jean BowensChurch HisiorianIn 1902. a small group of people inthe Cornatzer community bought ahouse near the present Comatzer-DulinFire Department and organized theCornatzer Methodist Church.The Rev. M.H. Vestal was the firstpastor and Tom Cornatzer was the firstSunday School superintendent. Following Vestal as early pastors ofthe churchwere: the Revs. W.M. Curtis, C.S.Patrick, L.L. Smith and Rev. Ferrington.In 1911, Ance Cornatzer gave anxre of land three-tenths of a mile northofthe present church site. The old housein which the church was first organizedwas torn down, moved and rebuilt at thenew site. This was completed in 1914with the Rev. J,M. Vamcr as pastor andFrank Bailey as Sunday School superintendent. Other early pastors were: theRevs. E, Myers, Rev, Snow. J.H,Brendall, W.M. Rathbum,F.E. Howard,P.L. Smith, J.C. Gentry, Rev. Trolllnger,L.L. Lyerly, and Foster Loflin.Early Sunday School superintendents were: George McDaniei, DavePotts, and Mary Allen.Early members ofthe church and theyear they joined: Mr. and Mrs. TomCornatzer, Ida Jane McDaniei Hendrix,Mr.andMrs.CiceroSmilh, 1902;FrankBailey, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Bowens,Agnes McDaniei, Minnie McDanieiMelton, Sallie Nail. 1904; GeorgeMcDaniei, 1909; Jessie Cornatzer andJack Jones, 1911.Leona Bowens, 89, is the oldest surviving church member. She was recognized in January for having perfect attendance at church in 1992, her 19thyear of perfect attendance.On Oct. 4, 1950. the late Albert E.Bowens purchased2.4acresofland andgavcitfor buiidinganewchurch.CharlieVogler gave an adjoining xre for acemetery. A meeting of the congregation was held at the old church and abuilding committee w.is elected. Thebuilding of the prc.senl church wasstanedin 1951 and completed in 1952.The pews and pulpit furniture werepurchased for the church. Lighting fixtures in the old church were removedand restored by George McDaniei andare still in use. The church bell wasmoved from the oldchurch to the presentlocation and is still operable.Free of debt, the church was dedicated in 1954 with the Rev, WilliamAnderson as pastorand Garland Bowensas Sunday School superintendent. Laterpastors were: the Revs, D.D. Broomc,Cameron Dodson. and Carl A. Lain.During the 1964-1967 term that Lainwas pastor, a new educational buildingwas staned. The Rev, Forrest Churchfollowed as pastor for one year andduring Church's term, the educationalbuilding was completed. On Sunday,June28,1970, dedication services wereheld with Presiding Bishop, Earl G.Hunt Jr,.-and District Superintendent.Dr. Charles G.Beamon Jr. taking pan.The Rev. Ardis Payne was pastor.Following Lain as pastor: the Revs.Dwight Ludwig (1967-1968), ForrestChurch (1968-1969). Ardis Payne(1969-1973). Jack Lulher( 1973-1981).Rex Gibbs (1981-1984), Bill Farmer(1984-1987). The Rev. Garland Bowens gave 1.1xrcs for a parking area.On Jan. 30. 1969, Cornatzer organized a charter of United MethodistWomen when Ardis Payne was pastor.In the early 1970s, the church sanctuary was remodeled, including bricking the outside of the church sanctuaryand constructing a new steeple on lop.Thelighted brick outdoor bulletin boardin front of the church was erected andthe sidewalks were cemented. New carpet was installed in the sanctuary andthe windows were replxed with newstained glass memorial windows, givenby church members in memory ofor inhonor of loved ones.In the mid-1970s, air conditioningwas installed in the sanctuary and theparking lot and driveways were paved.In 1986, the project topad and cover'the church pews was started and wassuccessful withchurch members donating a pew in memory ofor in honor ofaloved one. Also in 1986, Bob Powebecamea certified layspeaker.In 1991,he was named Lay LeaderOf The Yearand became a member of the Gideons.On Sept 17, 1987. the church bellwas rung for200 seconds to commemorate the 200th anniversary ofthe signingof the U.S. Constitution. The bell wasrung by George Hachan Alien, achurchmember who was in the Aimed Forces.In I989,awooden mailbox was purchased and placed in the educationalbuilding for use by church members. Itwas made by Jimmy Nail and presentedto the church by his father, Robah Nail.In 1990, the remodeling of the educational building began, consisting ofan A-ftame roof being erected andCornatzer United Methodist Church as it looks today, located on Cornatzer Road.walkway and a central air conditioningsystem being installed. The roof of thechurch sancraaiy was recovered withnew shingles.In 1991, mini-blinds and valancesfor the educational building were donated by Sunday School classes. A newfloor covering for the nursery was donated by (he womens and mens classes.Several donations have been givenby church members, including: two offering plates, a wooden credenza with aglass enclosure and an old Bible displayed in the credenza in the vestibule,two reversibleparament sets with matching stoles, an organ forthe sanctuary, analtar set of a cross and two candle hold-era, a large picture of Jesus which hangsin thepulpit.
