Nancy Ann Robertson Sylvester
March 23, 1937 - October 10, 2023
Nancy Ann Robertson Sylvester passed away peacefully early Tuesday
morning, October 10, 2023, at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home
in Dobson, North Carolina, following her battle with Parkinson's and
multiple long-standing injuries. Her daughter, Debian Sylvester Thacker -
with whom she shares her birthday - was by her side. Born March 23,
1937 in Danville Virginia to the late Lloyd Garland Robertson and
Elizabeth Ann Maxie Robertson, Ms. Sylvester and her mother found their
way to Greensboro where she graduated from Greensboro Senior High
School, now Grimsley, and subsequently earned her Bachelor of Arts in
Apparel Design from Greensboro Women's College - known today as the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro.
Her adventurous, independent soul took her to Charlotte in her mid-twenties, where she'd become an apparel
buyer for Ivey's Department Stores, often frequenting New York City to view and place orders for upcoming
seasonal lines of clothing from renowned designers. Eventually, she was called back to Greensboro and the
travel bug led her to become a counter booking agent for Eastern Airlines, affording her the opportunity to
travel the world. Ms. Sylvester was also an entrepreneur at heart, opening the fi rst dedicated school of
gymnastics in the Winston-Salem area - Triad Gymnastics Academy. She enjoyed watching every competition,
along with all of her children's other sporting events. She would go on to work 35 more years in the airline
industry for her beloved Piedmont Airlines, US Airways and American Airlines. With her radiant personality
and voice, Ms. Sylvester took care of top brass executives in the Chairman's Club until just three years ago
when she retired at the age of 83. Many frustrated travelers found comfort and calm being taken care of by Ms.
Sylvester, seeing her earn multiple service-oriented honors and awards. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling
with friends and family, cooking specialty dishes, baking some of the most creative and best tasting cakes,
renovating her real estate investments, watching football with family, and most recently attending her
grandchildren's sporting events. Nancy greatly loved her children and grandchildren and was loved by them.
In addition to her parents. Ms. Sylvester is preceded in death by her firstborn, David Scott Sylvester. She is
survived by children Richard Durward "Chip" Sylvester III and Debian Sylvester Thacker, as well as
grandchildren Carson Jane Sylvester, William Walker Sylvester, David Shaw Thacker, and Elizabeth Christine
Thacker.
A private, crypt side service will be conducted 3pm Friday, October 13 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory

James Ray "JR" Marley, age 88, passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2023 after suffering from
the complications of dementia.
Mr. Marley was born in Wilmington NC on October 15, 1935 to Robert Kemp Marley and Blannie Mabel
Wheeler Marley. "J.R." or "Ray" as he was often called, came from a very large family and had 12 siblings. He
had three children of his own and two granddaughters, and two great grandsons, all of which he loved very
much.
Throughout his life Mr. Marley served in the National Guard from November of 1954 to June of 1959. He then
worked as a prison guard and decided quickly on that this particular profession wasn't for him. He tried several
other things but eventually found his stride as a long haul CDL Driver. While he worked for several different
trucking companies throughout his career, he retired from Anchor Motor Freight-Leaseway. Mr. Marley loved
being a truck driver and was known over CB radio as "Mr. Kool with a K". He was also a member of the
Teamsters; Local 391.
JR enjoyed cooking, dancing (especially shag), fishing, and watching golf on TV on Sunday afternoons.
However, his real passion was traveling. During his life time he visited nearly every state in the continental
United States. He toured the country for almost a decade before settling down In Advance, NC. As the years
continued, JR's health declined and as his disease progressed it became apparent that outside assistance was
needed to handle his day to day care. The Family then hired Kerry Dunn, an in-home care provider and what a
God send that she turned out to be for JR and the family! For two years Ms. Dunn was with JR daily and loved
him and assisted him as he reached his fi nal chapter. He was proceeded in death by his parents Robert Kemp
Marley & Blannie Mabel Wheeler Marley, fi ve brothers; Reverend Robert Paul Marley (Cecil), George Daniel
Marley, Isaac Carroll Marie)- (Faye), Ivey Kemp Marley, Johnny "JT" Thomas Marley. Three sisters; Hazel
Virginia Mills, Ruby Marley Barnhill, Eunice Mae Small and twin siblings of Wilmington, NC.
He is survived by two children from his first marriage to Barbara Lee Batton: a son, Ronald Ray Marley of
Advance, NC (Formerly of Decatur GA) and Daughter; Sharon Marley Hege (Husband Henry) of Lexington
NC. He is also survived by one child from his second marriage to Betty Lora Cummings a Daughter, Suzette
Marley Davis of Winston-Salem, NC. Two Grandchildren; Stefanie Grubbs Canady (Husband Richard "Craig"
Canady, II) and Brooke Renee Davis of Lynhurst, Ohio. Two Great-Grandchildren; Richard Craig Canady III
"Trace" and Deacon Marley Canady, both of Lexington, NC. One brother, Clyde Lee Marley of Mechanicsville,
VA., Sister in Law Patti Lynn Marley of Castle Hayne, NC, and a Brother in Law Jeff Small. As well as many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
JR was a man who loved life, his family and his retirement. He found love and lost love multiple times in his
life but the last woman to have his heart prior to his passing was Judy Gamble; a longtime family friend and a
permanent fixture to our family. JR was surrounded by a loving family up until the last moments of his life. It is
to be believed that a life well lived will end in peace and for JR Marley, nothing could be more true.
The family would like to express a heartfelt appreciation to the people of Hospice. Memorials can be made to
Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
The family will receive visitors starting at 12:00pm on Thursday, December 7 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton
Chapel, 108 East Kinderton Way, Advance, 27006. A Celebration of Life Service will follow the visitation and
begin at 1:00pm. Interment will immediately follow the funeral at Forest Hill Memorial Park, 1307 West Old
Hwy. 64, Lexington, NC 27295 for the final resting place for James "JR" Marley.

In memorial for Valerie Dawn Tucak Slogick, I Nicholas Alan Slogick, her spouse of 59 years announce her
passing on November 30, 2023 from the dreaded disease of cancer at the age of 77. Her illness was sudden and
took her in 6 weeks.
Valerie was preceded in death by our Daughter, Alexandra. Alexandra also fell victim to cancer at the age of 25.
Valerie is survived by our Son, Nicholas and his spouse Jennifer, who reside in Davie County. Valerie is also
survived by her younger sister, tu'o nephews and numerous cousins in Pennsylvania.
In accordance with her wishes, like that of our daughter, Alexandra, there will be no public gathering held for
her passing. Valerie's mark of excellence in this world will forever live in spirit for those who have lost her.
Anyone whoever interacted with Valerie as their teacher in her 10 years in two of the Davie County public
schools where she guided many young minds in their formative years in life may fondly remember her. Each
and every person who ever interacted with Valerie in our 51 years living in Davie County will also recall the
genuine caring empathy she always gave anyone she came in contact with. I would like to remind each of you
to mark in your memory that you had the distinct pleasure of 'meeting an Angel on Earth'. For those so inclined
Valerie would request that you mark her passing with a donation to the Davie Count)' Public Library in her
name.
Valerie traveled with me in my militaiy assignments in Germany, Vietnam (in spirit), and Missouri. Valerie and
I with our two young children selected Mocksville as the place to raise them because it was a mirror image of
our birthplace in Pennsylvania. Valerie's first focus was always for our young children. During our early years
in Davie County, Valerie provided library services to county residents via the Davie County library bookmobile.
Valerie guided many students into computer literacy with evening classes at the Davie/Davidson Community
College. Valerie's artistic and creative talent was experienced by others most vividly during her multi year
membership in the Mocksville Methodist Church Quilting group. Valerie served on and was former President of
the Davie County Librar)- Board. She was a Master Gardner, a beekeeper, and was active in many Davie County
'Arts Alive' festivals. Valerie taught senior Yoga in the Davie County Senior Center, as well as Yoga and step-
aerobics at the Mocksville YMCA. In her spare time she was a vital help to me in my farming passion on our
^ farm in Davie County.
