Carriage Factory in Mocksville in 1850
At NC Business History - North Carolina Carriage,Buggy & Wagon Makers there is a listing of carriage makers.
Under Mocksville, the entry is “Pritchard, Rosenbrough & Co. ( -1851-) coach makers.”
For photographs and descriptions of horse drawn vehicles, see
https://www.thehenryford.org/explore/blog/the-carriage-era-horse-drawn-vehicles
To view a refurbished stagecoach built in 1872, go see the “Hattie Butner” on display at the town hall in Clemmons,
North Carolina. Words on commemorative sign: “The “Hattie Butner”. A nine passenger Concord stagecoach built in
1872 for Edwin T. Clemmons by the Abbot-Downing Co. of Concord, New Hampshire. Named for his wife Harriet
(Hattie) Butner. A gift to the people of Clemmons by the Wachovia Historical Society in 1993 and adopted as the
symbol of the Village of Clemmons. Conserved and restored by the Clemmons Historical Society.”
In 1850, there were five different census schedules: Population, Slave, Mortality, Agriculture, and Industrial.
When I studied the hard-to-read Industrial Census, I found that Davie County had a business, “Prichard,
Rosebrugh and Company,” that made horse-drawn conveyances. Following are the images and transcriptions
from the census schedules for the two owners.
Population Schedule for Joseph P. Prichard:
House # 494, Joseph P. Prichard, 44, male, Clergyman Bapt., worth is $700, born in South Carolina
Elizabeth, 37, female, born in South Carolina
Thomas, 18, male, student, born in Mecklenburg Cty. [County], attended school within the year
Cynthia, 16, female, born in Mecklenburg Cty., attended school within the year
Mary, 11, female, born in Mecklenburg Cty., attended school within the year
William, 6, male, born in Mecklenburg Cty., attended school within the year
Fannie, 4, female, born in Davie County, attended school within the year
Eliza, 1, female, born in Davie County
John C. Foote, 21, male, Apprentice, born in Iredell County
William H. Sanford, 17, male, Apprentice, born in Iredell County
William T. Evans, 12, male, born in Surry County
Jane Kent, 15, female, M [mulatto] born in Davie County
Davie Dossier, January 2023 page 3
Joseph P. Prichard is the only man in the county named Prichard. The 1850 census did not list the townships or addresses
of the people. However, the Prichards seemed to live in Mocksville, judging by the neighbors.Household #492 was
Henry R. Call, carriage maker. #493 William Scott, carriage-trimmer. #495 was William T. Bessent, carriage maker.
#496 was a hotel.
Slave Schedule for Joseph P. Prichard:
Joseph P. Prichard, owner of
One black female, 107 [?]
One mulatto female, 50
One black male, 21
One black male, 26
One mulatto male, 23
Mortality Schedule for Joseph P. Prichard: not listed
(Nobody in his household died in the past year.)
Agriculture Schedule for Joseph P. Prichard: not listed
Industrial Schedule for Joseph P. Prichard:
The entire Industrial Census of Davie County in 1850 is only 2.5
pages, but is extremely difficult to read from the microfilm.

See https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/92602518 for his obituary and family information. Davie County
was not included in this discussion but notes were added by this author. His parents were from England. He
lived in Charleston, Charlotte, Davie County, and Texas. He was a minister and co-owner of a carriage
company in 1850! He was a busy man. Notes from Find A Grave: “Rev. J.P. Pritchard, who died at the residence of
his son, William Pritchard, Feb. 11, 1890, was born of English parents in Charleston, SC, Sept. 1806. During his infancy
his parents returned to London, England, where he remained until his tenth year, when he returned, an orphan, to America.
In his Twenty-second year he was married to Miss Eliza Henderson, of Charlotte, NC, with whom he lived happily until
her death, Sept. 29, 1880. Soon after his marriage he made a profession of religion and joined the Presbyterian church.
Two years later he united with the Baptist church, of which he was a member until his death. More than fifty years he was
a faithful minister of the gospel. He moved to Texas in the year 1854. One year later he came to Houston County. He
served the Crockett church as pastor a number of years, besides a number of other churches in this and Leon County.
Notwithstanding he was more than 83 years of age, he continued to preach occasionally until his last sickness.”
SAMUEL ROSEBROUGH, CO-OWNER
Also in the 1850 census for Davie County was Samuel Rosebrough, carriage-maker. His household number was only
sixteen numbers different from the Prichard family, so they probably lived in town also.
House #410, Samuel Rosebrough, 32, male, carriage-maker, worth is $500, born in Rowan County
Martha, 25, female, born in Iredell County
William, 5, male, born in Davie County
Laura, 2, female, born in Davie County
Richard L. Dismukes, 6, male, born in Rowan County
William Griffin, 20, male, carriage-maker, born in Randolph County
Franklin Bessent, 33, male, carriage-maker, born in Davie County
John Bivans, 18, male, carriage-maker, born in Rowan County
Daniel Welch, 18, male, carriage-maker, born in Davie County

1850 Mortality Schedule for Samuel Rosebrough: not listed
(Nobody in his household died in the past year.)
1850 Agriculture Schedule for Samuel Rosebrough: not listed
In the 1870 Census, the family lived in Ashley, Independence County, Arkansas. Samuel is a farmer, and they have seven
children. Find A Grave has a photo of his tombstone there and links to his wife and children. His ID # is 17094490. He
died in 1887. A family tree online says that his father ’s name was also Samuel.
Unresolved questions:
❖Where was the factory in Mocksville? It had 73 buggies or wagons in 1850 so it needed a lot of space. It was
before the trains came to Mocksville. No newspaper exists today from 1850.
❖Why was it only operating for a short period?
❖Why did both co-owners move away?
❖What impact did the Civil War have on similar businesses?
❖Joseph Prichard and Samuel Rosebrough are not on the Davie 1840 or 1860 census.
Stage coaches,https://www.historync.org/stagecoaches.htm
Stage coaches were an important segment of early transportation in North Carolina, especially in the mid and western
parts of the state. The lack of easily navigable rivers limited the utility of steamboats, and railroads developed slowly in
these sections. The first two NC railroads were both in the eastern part of the state and began full operation in 1840.
The first stage line in North Carolina was created in 1789.
According to traveler guides published in 1835, the principal stagecoach routes in North Carolina included —
Warrenton to Cheraw, SC
Warrenton to Marion (Courthouse)
Milton to Yorkville, SC
Raleigh to Asheville
Raleigh to Showen's Cross Roads
Salem to Greenville, SC
Cheraw to Showen's Cross Roads
Fayetteville to Lincolton
Salisbury to Asheville
New Bern to Smithville (now Southport) via Wilmington
Raleigh to New Bern
Tarboro to New Bern
Murfreesborough to Danville, VA
Charlotte to Camden
Fayetteville to Wilmington
Charlotte to Wilkesboro
Raleigh to Oxford
