U KELLY HELD FRIDAY The funeral of Thotnas L:'Rel!y whol died suddenly last Wednesday with a heart attack, following a week's illness, was held at the anoeatral home of Mr. Kelly and his slater, Miss Sallle E. Kelly, Friday morning, Rev. E. P. Brad ley, pastor of. the Presbyterian church, was in charge of the ser vice ond was assisted by Rev, L. B. Abernethy, Methodist minister pf Elkin. The Interment took place at the family plot ot Joppa. , The deceased was the youngest child of the late William Fro*. hock Kelly and Sarah Gaither' Kelly, and was born May 26, 1849.: Ho was educated at Davidson col* lege. Mr. Kelly was married to Miss Maitie Sterling, of Greensboro, who died Juno 3, 1808, Ho Inter married Miss Satle Chnttorton, of New York, who died several years ago. 'The bill to form Dnvie County from Ivuvvan was passed in Dccemfber, iSdU, and the first County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held In February, 1837. In the early history of Davie county there were a number of citiaens whose names appear fre quently in the county records as magistrates, adminintrntors on GStntGS, gunrdiana of orphans and in other civic nffaivs. Fromln- ciil nnioiig these citizens wore Thomas McNccly, n merchant, and Colonel William Frohock Keliyi a planter. These two men mnrricd sisters, the daughters of Nicholas Gaither, so their fami*- lios were closely connected. Satie Chat- ,terton, of Newburgh, New York, and died In 1026. Some of the Kelly family lived here, others made their homes in Charlotte and Rowan County. In looking ovor the old Session Book of Joppa Presbyterian Church, -it is seen that Thomas McNeely was iClerk of the Ses sion from 1S32 to 1850. Joppa Church was located a mile west of Mocksville, and the old grave yard still remains there. The -congregation moved lo Mocks ville in 183d, niul in 1840 u com modious brick church was built on tho site of the present edifice, the latter being eroded in 1905. The plans for the church built in iSdO were drawn by Colonel Kol- ly, being similar to n church he had seen in Mississippi. In the Joppn Session Book is found this entry: "Oct. 12, 1888. Thomas McNccty was appointed to .sit in the Presbytery in Mock- aviJic, and John W. Torrentino, his altornatc." KelJy qualified as ad ministrator on the estate of John Clement, who had introduced the bill to form d)avle County from Rowan in 1836. In the Davie Court Minutes, Nov. 29, 1848, is tho record: ""Wm. ||. Kelly was appointed one of the committee of Finance for Dnvie County, in place of M. D. lArmfleld, remov ed. Ho came into Court and was duly qualified." Returning to the Joppa Scs- .•lion Book, the following entries are found: "April G. 1840—Col. William F. Kelly, I. -A. "Dec 31, 18413, Mrs. 'Kmily Cliailln died, having lived 'for Hie cause of Christ, an ar dent friend of Bnbbutli schools, and n dcvotod Christian." Mrs. Chufllu was a daughter of Nich olas Gnither, and a sister of Mrs. Thomas McNcoly and Mrs. William F. Kelly. The famous teacher, Peter S. Noy, bcltoved by many to have been one of Napo leon's officers, .wrote n poem for -Mrs. Chafiln to give to her son, Franklin Chaflin, on his birthday, ■II 1840. Peter S. Key taught in the vieiiiity of MocKsviiic, and was a visitor in Colonol Kelly's home. Ho wrote a letter to Mrs. Kelly, stating hia religious views, and both tha poom and the let ter arc still In the possession of the Kelly family. In the Joppn records Is this note entered by Thomas McNeely, on Dec. 80, 1848: "Col. William F. Kelly died, having been for many years nn orderly member our church." The Davic Court Minutes, page 70, Feb. 27, 1845), has this entry: "Ajdministrntion upon the e-sliile of William P. Kelly, dec,, granted to Stephen L. IIowcII." Colonel Kelly's grave at Joppn Cemetery Is marked with a tall 'slab, the epitaph being: "In mem ory of Col. William F. Kelly, who died Dec. 20, 1848, aged 52 years and 11 mos. Colonel Kelly was of Scotch descent, a gcntlc- nmn of tho old school, firm to his purpose, calm, tomporatc, and conscientious to a remarkablo degree. He was an exemplary member of the Presbyterian Church. Ho loved the church of his forefathers, revered and prac ticed her instructions, catechis ing his family, dally reading tho Scriptures and praying with them.
