'The bill to form "Dnvie County from Ivuvvan was passed in Dccemfber, I83d, and the first County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held in February, 1837. In the early history of Davie county there were a number of citisens whose names appear fre quently in the county records as mngistrntcs. administrators on cstntos, gunrdinna of orphans and in other civic affairs. Fromin- eiit nmniig these citizens were Thomas McNccly, n merchant, and Colonel William Frohock KpII.Vi a iilaiitcr. Colonel Kelly lived for a luinvbor. of years on his large plantation in Davio, later luirclinsing tho residcnco on Sal isbury street, whore his daugh ter, Miss Sallie Kelly, made her home until about ton years ago. The material lor this article has bQon...8ecui'ed-.throiigh cnnrt- minutes, church records, tomb stone inacriptionsi and Informa tion from the relatives of the McNcely and Kelly families. Thomas McNecly was born Sept. 30, 179G, and died June 4, 18G6, He was married on March 20, 1820 to Margaret Gaither, who was born in March, 1799, and died Feb. 16,1877. In looking over tho old Session Book of Joppa Presbyterian Church, it is seen that Thomas McNcely was iClerk of tho Ses sion from 1832 to 1850. Joppa Church was iocnted a mile west of Mocksville, and the old grave yard silll remains there. Tho congregation moved to Mocks ville in 183'i, and in 18'10 a com modious brick cluircii was •built on tho site of tho present edifice, the latter being erected in 1905. The plans for the churcli built in 1840 wero drawn by Colonel Kel ly, being similar to a church he had seen in Mississippi. In Urn Joppn Soanion Book is f(>nnd this entry t "Oct. 12, 1888. Tliomas McNccty was appointed to sit in the Presbytery in Mock- eviJlc, and John W. Torrontino, his nitornato." The Davie Court Minutes, page 70, Feb. 27, 1849, has this entry: "Administration upon the esliilu of WiiUam F. Kelly, dec., granted to Stephen I.. Ilowell." Colonel Kelly's grave at Joppn Cemetery i.s marked with a tull 'slab, the cpitajdi being: "In mem ory of Col. William F. Kelly, who died Dec, 20, 1848, aged 52 years and 11 mos. Colonel Kelly was of Scotch descent, a gentle man of tho old school, fiirni to his purpose, calm, tomporutc, and cousolentioua to a remarkable doffj'oc. He was an exemplary member of the Presbyterian Clturch. lie loved the church of his forefathers, revered and prac ticed her instructions, catechis ing his family, daily reading tho Scriptures and praying with them. Thomas MeNcoly's last connec tion with Jpppa Church is re corded under the date, Jan. 6, 1850; "Mr. Thomas McNeely and Mai'garet, his wife, Avere dismiss ed by cortiflento to join the Cen tral Church of Philndclphin." As has been already mentioned in tnis article, 'jinomns mcMooly and his wife later returned to North Curoliun, and made their home in Salisbury, Avhere some of their dcacendonts now live.
