Elsie (Surratt) Cole
April 1, 1939 - April 8, 2022 (age 83)
Elsie Cole, 83, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on April 8, 2022, at her home
surrounded by her family.
Elsie was born in Manheim, PA to Stella and Herman Surratt. The family later moved to Sylvatus, VA
where all their children were raised.
After high school, Elsie married Donald Parnell and together they had two children. They moved their
family to North Carolina around 1960.
Elsie excelled in Public Relations and Sales. Having relocated to North Carolina, she had an extensive
career in banking and later, insurance sales. Upon retirement, she returned to Carroll County, VA, built
her dream home, helped care for her mother and traveled extensively. She enjoyed golf, scuba diving and
any opportunity to sing—especially of God's love and mercy.
In 1991 Elsie married Ed Cole and they enjoyed a 24-year adventure until his death in 2015. They
traveled in their motor home and enjoyed the many beautiful sites that this country offers. It was during
this time that they bought The Davis Bourne Inn in Independence, VA. Elsie and Ed worked tirelessly to
perfect a Bed and Breakfast with a fine dining restaurant in this 1865 Victorian jewel. It was a labor of love
and a dream come true for Elsie.
After Ed's death, Elsie sold her mountain home and moved permanently back to Advance, NC.
Those who knew Elsie Cole never forgot her brilliant smile, her sense of humor, her determination and her
ability to accomplish most anything she decided to try. She sang beautifully, taught herself to play piano,
guitar and a yard sale clarinet that she bought and was making music by sundown. She never met a
stranger and was at home whether canning in the kitchen or making presentation to a room full of
executives.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward V. Cole, her sister, Sadie Surratt
Taylor and husband Raymond Taylor. A nephew, Dennis Taylor, and sister-in-law Judy Nolan Surratt.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Parnell Blevins (Aaron) of Advance, NC and Tessy Parnell
Welch (Del) of Mocksville, NC. A very special bonus daughter, Shirley Quesenberry (Larry) grandchildren
Jessica Welch Greene and Jade Austin Welch; and a very special great granddaughter, Camden Olivia
Greene.
Also surviving are brothers Fred K. Surratt (Betty), Maynard A. Surratt (Becky), Roger D. Surratt, C. Steve
Surratt (Gerri) and a wonderful host of nieces and one special nephew. Elsie was blessed with many
lifelong friends and a church family whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to thank the excellent caregivers who made life so sweet for mom during her illness:
Laverne, Darlyn , Shequite and Sharon, you are angels here on earth.
A Celebration of Elsie's life will be held at 3:00 on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at Hayworth Miller, Kinderton
Chapel in Bermuda Run, NC. Family visitation will begin at 2:00.

loved history, fresh air, hard work, discipline and investing
in the stock market. His life was most enjoyed in the little
things. He loved his wife of 55 years faithfully. He was a
man of his word and embodied a strong faith that carried
him through life's ups and downs. He enjoyed exercising
even up to the week of his eternal homecoming. A cup of
coffee made him smile and relax. His most precious trea
sure was his deep faith in God. He poured into his family
every chance he got with phone calls, emails, family trips
and meals out. He championed charities that stood for Bib
lical principles.
His love for his grandchildren was evident to all. He
taught them history and the penny-nickel game and was
always ready to trap someone like a rat. Often.referring to
them as My Pals, he sometimes made himself dizzy giving
them the biggest Schlawbowlies. He reminded them often
to be careful and to spit on your feet and get tough when
life got hard, but when it comes to family, there's always
time to Fotz around together. He taught all of his family
the importance of knowing God and honoring Him with
your life, ^d as such, his family followed in his footsteps.
We miss him dearly, but trust in the Scriptures that remind
us "to live is Christ, to die is gain" (Phil 1:21) and that
while we grieve, we do so with hope (1 Thess 4:13). We

KARLSON
ADVANCE - Dr. Karl Henrik Karlson, Jr., 76, died Friday, May 27, 2022, of complications from several
strokes.
He was born May 26, 1946, in Plainfield, NJ, to the late Karl Henrik and Jean Hall Dundon Karlson. Karl's
early education started at a school in Stokholm, Sweden and five years in a school in Copenhagen,
Denmark. He graduated from Scarsdale High School in New York, in 1964, and after spending his Junior
year in Costa Rica, graduated Cum Laude from Colgate University in 1968. Karl graduated from Tulane
University School of Medicine in 1972, and did his residency in pediatrics on the Tulane Service at Charity
Hospital in New Orleans. After two years of a pediatric pulmonology fellowship at Tulane under the
mentorship of Dr. William Waring, he did a year of pediatric intensive care fellowship at Massachusetts
General Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Daniel Shannon. Later, he was the Director of the PICU at
Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Karlson taught pulmonology at Tulane, at the Medical College of
Georgia in Augusta, GA, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Children's Hospital in Little
Rock, at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA, and finally was a Professor of Pediatrics at Wake
Forest Medical School in Winston-Salem before retirement as Professor Emeritus. At Norfolk and
Winston-Salem, he also taught and specialized in pediatric sleep medicine. While he published many
articles based on his research and wrote articles and chapters about pediatric pulmonology, some of it
internationally recognized, his real love was for teaching and patient care. The editors of The Best Doctors
in America recognized him every year from that series' inception in the early 1990's until his retirement as
one of the best doctors in his field in Arkansas, then in Virginia, and then in North Carolina. Many of his
patients, students, and colleagues have had equally high praise for him.
He was a lifelong Anglican and served on the vestry of St. Luke's Anglican Catholic Church in Augusta,
GA, and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk, VA. His final affiliation, at the end of his
life, was with the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Bermuda Run.
Dr. Karlson's interests were broad. He loved trains from a young age, and loved working on his model
railroad for most of his life. He was a member of the Southbound Model Railroaders' Club, and shared his
love of trains with his own children and with children in the hospital, especially at Children's Hospital in
Little Rock and Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem where he helped contribute to the hospital
model railroad set-ups that the pediatric patients could enjoy. Dr. Karlson loved fly fishing, baseball, bird
watching. New Orleans cooking and culture, had an amateur radio license, and enjoyed Russian
literature, and the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers, among
many others, as well as books about history and of course about railroads. Until he became ill this year,
he also spent many hours with his family in the garden growing vegetables - especially tomatoes and
green beans. Music was another of his loves, from ABBA to Mardi Gras music to Beethoven,
Tchaikovsky, and Bach with bagpipe music mixed in. Most of all, he loved his family and tried to serve his
Lord.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Karlson, in 2016.
Survivors include his love of his life, his wife whom he married in New Orleans in 1971, Marilyn Katherine
Naufftus Karlson: son, Karl William Karlson (Billy); daughter, Mary Katherine Karlson Bratton; son-in-law,
Ian Bratton; and brother-in-law. Bill Naufftus.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 2, at Christ Church, Anglican, 2252
Queen Street, Winston, Salem. The family invites those who cared about Dr. Karlson to come by Lambert

Ronald Charles Monger
August 13, 1948 - June 9, 2022 (age 73)
Ronald Charles Monger, 73, of Mocksville, NC passed away June 9, 2022. He was born to Charlie and
Joyce Monger of Ooltewah, TN. He grew up on a dairy farm and was tasked with milking the cows before
school, which shaped his work ethic. Ronnie was incredibly bright with a sharp intellect and had a
photographic memory with total recall. He and his wife Karen were married in 1971. He began his 35-
year career working at Hamilton National Bank. Ronnie and Karen moved to Whiteville, NC in 1977
where Ronnie worked at United Carolina Bancshares, serving as Chief Financial Officer. Ronnie retired
from BB&T as Executive Vice President in 2004. Despite an extremely successful career, Ronnie's goal
was to retire early, to allow himself time to enjoy life outside of the board room.
Ronnie loved sports and the camaraderie that goes along with being a fan. He worked in a visit to many
MLB stadiums while on family vacations. He was an avid golfer and loved playing with friends and family.
Staying true to his roots, Ronnie loved to spend time outdoors and loved driving his tractor, mowing the
yard, and picking up debris. Everyone who had the privilege to know Ronnie knew about his love of
storytelling, just like the rest of the Monger family. His dynamic wit and sense of humor made his stories
really resonate with people and made conversations with him complex and interesting.
Ronnie is survived by Karen league Monger, wife of 50 years, daughter Sarah league Monger (Tim
Bunch), son Charles Monger (Meredith Brown), Grandson Silas Warner Bunch, sister-in-law Paula
Thompson Guest, and niece Adrienne Teague Moyer (Chris Moyer).

of Alzheimer's Disease in Lexington, attended by her husband, Jon; son Jon; and daughter, Dani, on June
18, 2022, at the age of 78.
She will be remembered by the many whose lives she touched as a member of the First Presbyterian
choir, a student and leader in Bible study groups in Mocksville, and Punta Gorda, PL, a beloved sister, a

Sue probably will be remembered by the two people who returned her wallet after finding it on a salt flat
a few hundred of feet below sea level in Death Valley National Park, California, and another couple who
shared her mountain peak discoveries in New Hampshire. And fond memories will be cherished by
young and old adventurers who ran with her many miles from one erupting geyser to the next, all day
long, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
Susan rejoiced and was glad in each day that God gave her. She will be missed always but will live
forever in our hearts and with The Lord.
