under adverse conditions, and was the hospital corpsman
in charge of the operating room.
He returned to civilian life in the fall of 1956, and
moved back once again to Athens to complete his under
graduate degree from Concord College. It was here he
fell in love with Carol Goodman they were married in
1957. He graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in
education, with specialties in biology and social sciences.
He also earned a master's degree in educational adminis
tration & counseling from The University of Cincinnati,
a degree from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in
Ohio, as well as undertaking agent training from Naval
Investigative Services, in Washington, D.C.
He held several jobs early in his marriage, including
junior high science teacher, funeral embalmer and am
bulance driver, high school biology teacher, and special
agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence. He worked
for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for over
21 years while living in Bridgeport, W.Va. He and Carol
raised their two children, David and Whitney there. He
was active at Simpson Creek Baptist Church, on the dea
con board for years, as well as a youth group leader. One
could find Fred outdoors - backpacking, deer hunting, or
gardening behind their home on Brightridge Drive. Most
importantly, you could find him helping friends.
In 1988, he took early retirement from the State of WV.
Warmer weather and new challenges began to call, taking
the family to Mocksville, where he continued to work for
the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for several
years before retiring for good.
Over the next 20 years, he and Carol were active mem
bers of the First Baptist Church of Mocksville. He served
with the N.C. Baptist Men's Disaster Relief Organization.

tornado, and hurricanes. His mission work also took him
to Alaska, Honduras, and Germany. He also worked as a

ri an settlement in Winston-Salem. It combined his love of
S history, with meeting and talking to people.
Later in his life, every October, he would invite friends
from all over for the apple butter making gathering - a
(JO day-long event starting early in the morning from getting
, the fire just right, to peeling and coring the apples, to stir-
ring all day with a long wooden paddle until the color was
just right, and then getting everyone into an assembly line
to get all the apple butter into the canning jars. It was a
H. day full of fellowship: having lunch on a fall day, enjoy-
rJ ing one another's company and leaving with apple butter.
^ He made sure everyone felt welcome. He hosted over 20
gatherings in West Virginia and North Carolina.
O
They missed their daughter Whitney, who had married
a Texan, so they bought a home there. They would travel
back and forth from Texas to Mocksville, to visit their son
David and Mends from there, and also to beat the Texas
he^. After several years of traveling from Texas to North
Carolina, the mountains of West Virginia were calling him
home. They sold their homes, and Fred and Carol moved
back home to Bridgeport. He bought a house on a differ
ent hill this time, and they lived for five years spending
time with those same friends they had made years ago.
Two years ago, he realized that they finally were get
ting older, and should move back to Texas to be closer to
their daughter. His timing was perfect. They enjoyed a

take classes in a variety of disciplines she did not get to
earlier in life, inspired her to find new interests, and grew
her world with culture and perspectives. This is where her
desire to write a book about her life grew. She felt pride
when professors gave her feedback that she had a special
talent for writing, and she spoke about her dream to write
a book often in her last few weeks.

interests, and to make sure her family was provided for.

Board of Orthopedic Surgery and serving as the execu
tive director of the Southeastern Fracture Consortium to
further research and innovation in orthopedic trauma care.
She was dedicated about patient advocacy, and was invited
to become a member of an advisory board to help medical
providers better understand LAM, ALS, and patient needs.

Gretchen Mars Howerton
1932-8/31/2021
Gretchen Mars Howerton (1932-2021) At 89 Gretchen- aka Nana, aka Super G, embarked upon her next great
adventure on August 31, 2021. Growing up in Philadelphia, Mississippi she developed her business acumen
and fashion sense working at Mars Brothers - her parents' clothing store. Always an adventurer, upon
completion of her undergraduate studies at Millsaps College and Stephens College she moved to New York.
There she earned a graduate degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University. Gretchen met her soon to
be husband - Jim Howerton (deceased 2013) while working as a physical therapist at Baptist Hospital in
Memphis, Tennessee. The young couple settled initially in Columbia, North Carolina and started a family. They
shared a love for spending time with friends, family and dining out. Throughout our teenage years in Newport
News, Virginia we knew we had the coolest parents in the neighborhood. Mom was always a trendsetter, both
in fashion and in her approach to life. As a friend remarked, she was never without a smile, always with
perfect makeup and dressed to the nines - whatever the occasion. As her daughter, I am deeply grateful for
the example she set as a working woman running a solo medical practice. Before the Women's Movement
brought attention to issues of equality at work and at home, Gretchen made her way through the world by
expecting and if necessary, demanding she be treated as an equal. Consequently, it never occurred to me that
I should accept anything less. As her son, I am deeply grateful for the example she set as a mother and a wife.
She taught me what to look for in a life partner, which I was blessed to find. Equally importantly she taught me
what to be as a life partner, perhaps explaining why my beautiful wife Pam has kept me these past 25 years.
She helped give us both the confidence to aspire to many goals and the support to achieve them. Upon
retirement in 2010 she relocated to Advance, North Carolina with her husband to be near her son and
daughter-in-law Russell and Pamela Howerton, her grandchildren Zoe Howerton, Gwyneth Howerton, Amanda
Herring, Jennifer Coppola, grandsons-in-law Marcus Herring, Roman Coppola, and her great-grandchildren
Keats Herring, Pascale Coppola, Marcello Coppola, and Alessandro Coppola. During these years Nana enjoyed
immersion into a large extended family. Late in life she got to indulge her wandering spirit with globe-trotting
adventures with her daughter and son-in-law Todd and Tim; whale watching in Alaska, exploring the Sea of
Cortez, stepping back in time in the Galapagos Islands, rounding Cape Horn on an epic adventure from the
Chilean Fjords to Staten Island, Argentina and getting up close and personal with elephants and rhinos during
a once in a lifetime journey through South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Super G embraced these cultures
and experiences with zeal. The 'sundowners' at the end of the day's adventure were always some of her
favorite moments. We celebrate her life with one last toast - as her friends from Botswana would say "Pula"
(cheers) "Tsamaya sentle" (goodbye and go well). She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A
private family graveside service will be held at Four Oaks Farm on September 11, 2021. Hayworth-Miller
Funeral Homes in Advance, North Carolina are handling funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers please
consider a donation to Davie Community Foundation, 107 N. Salisbury St. Mocksville, NC 27028.
