James David Barker
Mr. James David Barker, 50, ofCounty Line Road, Har
mony, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2020 at Maple Leaf Health
Care in Statesville.
He was bom on Nov. 16,1969 in Chester County, Pa.
to the late Fred and Polly Barker Foster. He worked in the
automotive industry and was a gifted mechanic who loved
working with his hands. Known for loving cars and being
a movie buff, his friends knew him as a man full of wit
who always made you laugh.
Survivors: a daughter, Megan Barker; a sister, Cher
yl Dozier (Mike) of Camming, Ga.; nephew and nieces,
MA. Dozier (Chelsea), Havilah Griffin (Beau) and Abi
Dozier and their children; his stepfather. Bow Foster of

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11
a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, on the grounds of Calvary Baptist

Mr. Tony Ray Comatzer, 57, of Cedar Grove Church
Road, Mocksville, died on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020 at
Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury after a short illness.
He was bom on Dec. 30, 1962 in Forsyth County to

David Allen 'Dave' Eckenrode
David "Dave" Allen Eckenrode,. 82, of Mocksville,
died on July 26,2020 at the W. G. Bill Hefner VA Medical
Center in Salisbury.
He was bom June 7, 1938 in Cresson, Pa. He is pre
ceded in death by: his parents; daughter, Rachelle Hollars;
brothers, Frank and Bob Eckenrode; and a sister, Linda
Johnson.
He attended Pennsylvania schools and served 111^
years in the U.S. Marine Corps. After the military he was
a video game and pinball machine repairman for Patton
Brothers PBl for several years. He was a member of the
Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Mocksville. He loved
hunting and fishing, and was also a former member of
AMVETS.
Survivors: his wife, Janice Eckenrode, sons Jimmy
Eckenrode and Billy Allen Eckenrode (Lori); sister, Dor
othy Stevens; grandchildren, Meredith Poplin, Madison
Brewer, and Omar Alsweti; and great-grandchildren, Wy-
att and Keimedy Poplin.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 4 from
2-4: pjn. at Seventh Day Adventist Church on Milling
Road in Mocksville.

John Arthur Fox
Mr. John Arthur Fox, 84, of Mohegan TYail, Mocks
ville, died Friday, Sept. 25,2020 at his home.
He was bom on April 10,1936 in Ilion, N.Y. to thelate
Arthur William and Cora May Timmerman Fox. Mr. Fox
joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and took basic training in
Fort Dix,NJ. He then joined the 187th Airborne Division
in Fort Lee, Va. and transferred to the lOIst Airborne Di
vision in Fort Campbell, Ky., later transferring to Stand
by Reserve in 1958. He moved back to Richfield Springs,
N.Y. and retired from Remington Arms ffter 28 years.
He was also preceded in death by: his wife of 58 years,
Claudia Ruth Stickles Fox.
Survivors: 2 children, Andy Fox (Laurie) of Mocksville'
and Jennifer Fox of New York; 3 grandchildren, Andrew

James Rufus Perry Jr.
Mr. James Ruftis Perry Jr., 89, of Mocksvilie, died
Wednesday, Sept. 23,2020 at his home.
He was bom June 24,1931 in Newark, NJ. to the late
James Rufus Perry Sr. and EvelJa O'Neal Perry. Mr. Perry
was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served in the
Korean Conflict. He was a fisherman and gardener. Mr.
Perry was a history and movie buff, and especially enjoyed
watching Westerns. He never met a stranger and often in
vited people into his home and then they were considered
family.
He was also preceded in death his wife, Nora Rosetta
Troxler Perry.
Survivors: children, Byron Perry, James "Skip" Per
ry III (Susan), and Kimberly Perry-Barnes (Sylvester); a
sister, Juanita Jones (Lawrence); granddaughters, Simone

and crocheting and was proud
of her handiwork. Quite the cook, one could never go vis
it without leaving with a loaf of her delicious sourdough
bread. Mrs. White was especially proud of her family, and
often remarked about how well they got along and how
much they love each other.
She was also preceded in death by siblings, L.S. Shel
ton and Edna Ann Beck.
Survivors: her husband, Joseph Cranford White; a
son, Mark White (Jeanna); granddaughter, Jessica Huyett
(Matthew); siblings, Helena Craft, Bettie Smith, Leonard
Shelton (Jean), and Bill Shelton (Patricia); sisters-in-law,
Irma Jean Shelton and Glenda Sapp; and many nieces and
nephews.

Sept. 26 at Courtney Baptist Church with the Revs. James

he became the second employee hired at Ingersoll Rand in
1965. During his early years with the company, he earned
an associate degree from Salisbury Business College.
Suvivors: his wife of 62 years, Ann; his children Stella
Green (Danny), Lonnie (Sheila) and Chris (Lynn); grand
children, Mac, Thomas and Sam Jackson, Spencer, Geor
gia and Grace McCullough, and Willem, Margaret, John
and Patrick McCullough; his brothers, Delano (Priscilla),
and Joe (Carolyn); many nieces and nephews; and many
friends.
He is also preceded in death by his first wife, the late
Betty Jean Hamilton.

Betty Sue Smith Lashmit
Mrs. Betty Sue Smith Lashmit, 85, of Hardison Street,
Mocksville, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at the Kate B.
Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was bom on July II, 1935 in Davie County to the
late Henry Dalton and Duska Oliver Hunter Smith. She
operated a home daycare for many years: She loved coun
try and gospel music, danc-
ing, shopping and working in
her flowers. She was an active
member and former Command-
er of the Disabled American
Veterans Auxiliary, where she
manderoftheStateDepartment.
She made pictures and made 15
history books for the DAVA, in
which she won awards for the
get Me Not arrangements at the
DAVA conventions. She also
won Commander of the Year
at the convention. She served
as Sgt. at Arms, Forget Me Not
chair, Jr. Activities chaim and was elected State Jr. Vice
Commander. She also volunteered for 30 years, at the VA
Hospital in Salisbury, where she always enjoyed singing
Christmas carols on Christmas Day. She always had a pas
sion to help the veterans. She was a member of the Mocks
ville Civitan Club, where she served as secretary and as
president, receiving the Outstanding President of the Year
Award. She also was a member of the arts council where
she helped make costumes for the plays and was a member
of the Red Hat Ladies Social Butterflies of the Triad. She
was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband of 49
years, Robert Lewis "RL" Lashmit; a son, Rickey Alan
Lashmit; and a sister, Darlene Gail Hauser.

day, Oct. 14 at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nolan
Johnson officiating. Burial wiU follow in Huntsville Bap
tist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one

She loved God, her family, chocolate chip cookies the
wildflowers on the side of the road during spring, the mag
nificent changing colors of the leaves in the fall, and the
magic she brought to Christmas time.

way until yielding to Christ at age of 42 and finding pro
found, settled satisfaction as Jesus reoriented their lives.
He will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of
humor, willingness to pray with others, and his infec
tious hospitality. A golf buddy said he lived his life with a
Christian witness rarely equalled. He delighted in study
ing and teaching God's Word. He was a member of Grace
Bible Church where he served as a deacon and in other
capacities. He had a 41-year career in pharmacy, nurturing
hundreds of relationships and strengthening the health of
many. Most recently he savored retirement to the point of
wearing his LL Bean bedroom slippers into the grocery
store, just because he could. He could build a computer,
cook fabulous foods, and produce a flower bed of beau
ty. A familiar sight in Advance was his little white pickup
truck with the salvation message on the tailgate. He want
ed others to know the blessings of trusting Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother,
William Carlisle Utsey.

sister-in-law, Mary Harley Utsey of St. George, S.C.; niec

tary of Ae Guiding Light Missionary Baptist Association
Women's Auxiliary. She remained an active and faithful
member until her health declined.
Mrs. Watkins was involved in grassroots politics and
organized community-wide voter registration drives. She
was a former member of the Davie County Civil Rights
Task Force, appointed election official of the Davie County
Board of Elections and served as an election judge for the
Cooleemee's voting precinct. Mrs. Watkins participated in
numerous community activities, including the Cooleemee
Historical Association, Civitan Club and the Davidson
County Chapter of the Hairston Clan. Mrs. Watkins special
interest included, African-American history that focused
on the preservation of local community history.
She was also preceded in death by: her siblings; her
husband, John Henry Watkins; and her son, John Kelvin
Watkins.
Survivors: 3 daughters, Carolyn Watkins-Dillard, Avis
Watkins-Smith (Rickey), Lori Rhodes (Bobby); 2 sons,
James Watkins and Carl Watkins; sister-in-law, Ethel L

Mary Kathryn "Kat" Baity, 81, died on Monday, Oct.
12, 2020 at her home after several months of declining
health.
She was bom May 3, 1939 in Davie County to Roby
Addison Baity and Annie Hutchens Baity. She was a
member of the first graduating class of Davie County High
School in 1957. She was co-owner and operator of Town
and Country Florist in Yadkinville for more than 40 years
with her close friend, the late Carrie Steelman. She loved
watching UNC and all ACC basketball. She enjoyed vis
iting with and talking on the phone with friends she had
made through the years. She liked family reunions, Farm-
ington class reunions, scrapbooking, country music, and
Christmas. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist
Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers,
Roby Lee, Jim, Jerry, Billy Dean, and Bobby Gene Baity;
2 nephews; and special friends, Julius and Mary Potts.

ventor and later in life he became a pretty good cook as
well. He often said he wasn't too smart because he only
had an eighth grade education; however, his wisdom and
knowledge far exceeded that.

Alice White
Mrs. Alice White died after a gallant fi ght with cancer,
at her daughter's home in Stone Mountain, Ga., on Satur
day, Oct. 10,2020.
The daughter of the late Theodore and Queen (Clem
ent) Ijames, and the granddaughter of Alonzo and Creole
(Maxwell) Clement, she grew up in Cooleemee, where
she received her early public schooling. She married her
fi rst husband, James (Eddie) Pruitt, and moved to Phila
delphia, Pa, She was a loving wife, homemaker, and a de
voted mother to her two young daughters. She retumed to
Cooleemee in the late 1960s and with the assistance and
support of her family, she nurtured and raised her young
daughters. She began employment with Cannon Mills in
Salisbury, from which she retired in 2000. Her retirement
years were fi lled with travel, family, and friends. The ear
ly part of her life she worshipped at Liberty AME Zion
Church in Cooleemee, where her parents and brother are
buried. Later, she joined Cedar Grove AME Zion Church,
where her sister is a life-long member. At Cedar Grove,she actively served others through her support of the fol
lowing organizations: Usher Board, Stewardess Board,
Jamaica Worker Representative, and WH&O Missionary
Society. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star, Omega Chapter 242, located in Cleveland, NC.

John Grimes
John Grimes, mayor of Siler City, died on Tuesday, Oct.
20 after four days under hospice care.
He was bom March 15,1943 to John F. Grimes Jr. and
Virginia Williams Grimes. He was proud to have grown up
in the small mill town of Cool-n eemee in Davie County. After
graduating from Davie County
High School, he received 22
offers of full grant-in-aid schol
arships to play football, includ
ing one from every school in
the ACC. He chose Wake For
est and became the first athlete
from Davie County to receive
an athletic scholarship to a Di
vision 1 NCAA school. He was
inducted into the Davie County
Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
graduating from Wake
Forest, he fulfilled his military obligation, serving in the
3/8th Cavalry of the 8th Infantry Division in Germany,
retiring with the rank of captain. In 1968,.in response to
a letter from his father-in-law asking him to join Cecil
Budd Tire Company, he came to Siler City. His career
there as a successful businessman spanned 49 years. He
was interested in political matters and became the first and
only Republican elected to the Chatham County Board of
Commissioners during the 20th century. He led the tick
et, serving from 1994-1998. He then turned his political
interests to Siler City, running successfully for District 4
Town Commissioner from 1999-2003. He was re-elected
in 2003, 2007. and 2011, and served 10 years as Mayor
ProTem before going on to win four consecutive terms as
mayor.
He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North
Carolina's highest civilian honor for a resident. He was a
former volunteer firefighter for the town, a board director
of Capital Bank, an Eagle Scout and a member in good
standing of Alcoholics Anonymous for 35 years. He was a
member of First Baptist Church where he served as chair
of the board of deacons and taught Sunday School youth
and adult men. His last patriotic act was to go to the polls
and vote four days prior to his passing.
Survivors: his wife of 55 years, Cecilia Budd Grimes of
the home; 2 sons, John Thomas and wife Alysia of Clem-
mons, and Stephen and wife Marcia of Siler City; a sister,
Kathy Januzelli and brother-in-law Jim of Lawrenceville,
Ga.; grandchildren, Alaina and Andrew, Jonathan, Abigail,
Julia,Tucker, Sophia, Daniel; and several nieces and neph
ews.
In a tribute by a member of the U.S. Congress, the fam
ily was informed that the American Flag over the Capitol
Building in Washington, DC, was flown in honor of US
Army veteran John Franklin Grimes III on the day of his
passing.,The flag has been sent to Siler City for use at his
funeral.
His service was held Saturday, Oct. 24 on the grounds
of Chatham Charter School at 11 a.m. The family arrived
at 10 a.m. to greet friends. A private burial was later that
afternoon at Mount Vemon Springs Presbyterian Church
with full military honors. Pallbearers were; Fred Pierce,
Mitch Dorsett, Mike KeUy, Gary Tyson, Danny Albright,
Jonathan Grimes, Andrew Maddox, Keyes Hudson, Jim

A golf enthusiast, he was always up for a good
round of golf. So much so, one of his many ac
complishments was achieving a two handicap.
This led to him winning numerous golf tourna
ments and serving in leadership roles at Salis
bury and Hickory HUl country clubs. He also
enjoyed riding his Harley, traveling to his home

Mr. Roger Brown Mock Jr., 71, of Advance, died on
Tuesday, Oct. 27,2020 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was bom in Forsyth County to the late Roger Brown
Mock and Doris Hilton Mock on Dec. 5,1948. Mr. Mock
served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and had
retired from RJ. Archer after 30 years. He was a loving
husband, father, and grandfather.

open road and U^vel, he embraced the philosophy that it's
the journey that matters rather than the destination.
He graduated from Central Washington University in
1997 with a teaching degree that supported his passion
for literature, writing and education. He married Janice
Sushereba in June 1997 and the couple later moved to
Mocksvilie, where he became a bora-again Christian who
grew his faith with a passion for defending the truth of the
God's Word and supporting a Gospel based church. While
being actively involved with church ministries the couple
met and fostered Nina as a teenager until she graduated
from high school and chose a career in the U.S. Navy. Af
terwards the Petroff's moved to Florence, Ore. where he
remained until their divorce in 2011.
He was preceded in death by: parents; brother, Nick
Levko, and cousin Victor Peters.
Survivors: a sister, Anne Marie Dokken (Bruce); niece,
Lisa Russell (John); nephew, Tyrell Dokken (Jennifer);
niece, Allison Martin (Trace); nephew, David Moberg
Thompson and all their children; and his extended fam- '

in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Miss Shannon Marie Custer, 49, of Newton, formerly of
Mocksville, died Sunday, Nov. 8,2020 at her home.
She was bora Aug. 21,1971,ln Norwich, N.Y., to the late
Kenneth Merle and Diana Carol Cruikshank Custer. Miss
Custer had been employed by Campers Inn, and loved all
her co-workers. She loved butterflies and was a big fan of
NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gracia Martha Littauer, 88. died at Forsyth Medical

She had been residing at Clemmons Village I in Wn-
ston-Salem since March of 2020 and experienced a steady

friend and fellow entertainer, actor John Bennes. They
were married in 2004 at age 71 and 73.
Her interests included computers, books, politics, knit
ting, quilting and she loved cats and dogs. She was a social
person and appreciated the company of her good friends,
family and neighbors. She volunteered actively for the
Democatic party and the Cooleemee Historical Society.
She was outspoken and passionate about her views
and spoke her mind freely. She loved to argue and debate
which was sometimes not well received; but for those who
truly knew her, it was accepted and expected. She was
definitely one of a kind and will be greatly missed and not
easily forgotten.

Mrs. Sadie Faye Richardson Rice, 100, of US 64 E.,
Mocksville, died on Tuesday, NovJ, 2020 at her home
with her daughters by her side.
She was bom on Aug. 1,1920 to the late James Nathan
iel Richardson Sr. and Chessie Alma Carter Richardson in

She retired from Davie Coun
ty Hospital in 1986 after 29 years, beginning as head of
housekeeping and ending her career as director of pur
chasing. After retirement, she devoted her life to caring
for loved ones during their end of life illnesses. First, her
father and then her husband. She continued always putting
the comfort and needs of others above her own. Her family
looked to her to plan events, and she was instmmental in
organizing and hosting a "cousins reunion for the Carter
family for 35 years, giving it up only when her health be
gan to decline. She was an excellent seamstress and cook
and will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband, Thom
as A. Rice Jr.; her siblings, JN. Richardson Jr., Everette A.
Richardson, Irene Hege and Lillian Tallent; a son-in-law,
Sam Walker; and a grandson, Lloyd Rice Martin.

Ralph Belvin McCrary, 68, of Mocksville, died on Nov.
10,2020 at Davie Nursing and Rehab in Davie County,
He was bom Jan. 4,1952 in Davidson County. He was
the son of the late Foster Grant McCrary and Audrey Con
rad (Hyatt) McCrary. He is also preceded in death by his
sister Pansy McCrary, and his brother Steven McCrary.
He worked with his father for 30 years at their family
business, McCrary House Moving. Later, he got a job in
the transportation industry driving trucks where he even
tually retired. He was a devoted Christian who enjoyed
reading the Bible daily. He loved collecting old things,
telling jokes, and fishing.

John and Carol Sparks
Carol Ann Willard Sparks died on Nov. 7, 2020. John
Edwin Sparks followed her three days later.
Married May 7, 1972, these two were known for many
things in the community, chiefly their love for one another.
Their love and faith bore fruit in the generosity and service
they gave their family, neighbors, church and conununity.
She had an eye for decoration and ran a clean, tidy ship. He
worked with his hands and loved to be outside. Together
they built their home near Farmington for 48 years.
Both were strong, vibrant people until their fi nal week
on earth. They were of clear mind, stayed busy with their
interests, and were happy with their life. Pestilence was
no deterrent to afternoon trips to the mountains they loved
or service at their church. Her illness and passing was a
critical blow to him and his health, and he followed her
with determination and desire for a lasting peace and com
munion with her.
Surviving: a son, Jonathan Daniel Sparks (Amanda Led-
ford Sparks) and his children, Harris, Lily, Wren and Sul
livan; a daughter, Kimberly Sparks Cook (Michael Cook)
and her children, Conner, Henry and Rachel; his mother,
Madeleine; his sisters, Helen Myers (Bobby), Nancy Mill
er (Michael), Teresa Phifer (John) and Alethea Segal; his
brother, Dwight (Elizabeth); her brother, Brian (Jane), her
sister, Kay Reece; her brother-in-law, William Davis (hus
band of the late Delia Davis); and numerous nephews and
nieces on both sides.
They were members of Macedonia Moravian Church for
more than 40 years.

Charles Stradiey Stovall
Mr. Charles Stradiey Stovali, 79, of Bermuda Run, died
after a sudden illness on Monday, Nov. 9,2020.
He was the son of the late Julian Baird and Frances
Watkins Stovall. He was bom in Granville County on
Nov. 18, 1940, and lived in Oxford during his childhood
until he graduated from Wake Forest University in 1963.
Following graduation, he served as first lieutenant in the
U.S. Army for two years where he was stationed in Fort
Stewart, Ga. He worked for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co.
in marketing and sales for 34 years until his retirement
as senior account manager in 1999. He was a member of
Clemmons Moravian Church for 36 years where he served
on the board of trustees and the child services committee.
He also served on the board of the Clemmons Fire De
partment for almost 40 years. He cherished spending time
with family, playing golf and watching sports, especially
the Demon Deacons.
Survivors: his wife of 56 years, Rebecca Sue "Susie"
Johnson; his daughter, Suzanne Mann (John) of Advance,
and their daughters Ashton and Alexis; a son, Chip Stovall
(Carol) of Overland Park, Kan., and their children Anna
and Charlie; a sister, Ann Stovall Ruff of Memphis, Tenn.;
and numerous cousins.
A private graveside service was held on Saturday, Nov.
14 at Clemmons Moravian Church with the Rev. Christo
pher Thore officiating.

Ernestine Jean Barnard Cieary
Mrs. Ernestine Jean Barnard Cleary, 93,of Mocksville,
died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020 after a short stay at Kate B.
Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
She was bora July 28, 1927 in Iredell County to the

Friesland Barnard. Mrs. Cleary
•; was a lifelong resident of the
Sheffield community. She had
worked at Monleigh Garment
Co. for more than 40 years as
a supervisor. After retirement,
^ she enjoyed gardening and
baking. She loved the Lord, at-
tending church, and reading her
Bible; these were all important
I parts of her life. In her 93 years,
she attended several churches.
After Zion Church closed, she
attended Mocksville Wesleyan
Church and then Salem United Methodist Church.
She was also preceded in death on Jan. 28, 2014, by
her husband of 69 years, Ray Cleary; a brother, Charlie
Barnard; and a sister, Isabelle Gallihcr.
Survivors: her daughter, Jean Cleary (Bill), her caregiv-
ers since Ray's death; a sister, Thelma Chambers (Lendon)

Mrs. Kimrey grew up attending Coraatzer United Meth

licious homecooked meals. Mrs. Kimrey enjoyed watch
ing cooking shows and court shows, crocheting, and work
ing outdoors. She loved fishing and helped her husband,
Ralph, work on his boats. Mrs. Kimrey also loved her four
dogs, Bella, Little Man, Bull, and Brandy.

Helen Madeleine Smoot Sparks
Mrs. Helen Madeleine Smoot Sparks, 95, of Farming-
ton, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020 at the Joan and Howard
Woltz Hospice House in Dobson, a casualty of CO VID-19.
The youngest child of Mattie Eaton and Robert Lee
Smoot, she was bom July 30, 1925 at the headwaters of

She was a bright girl who
graduated at the top of her class from Farmington High in
1942, and attended Appalachian State Teachers College,
majoring in science and math, graduating in 1946. She
taught at the old Mocksville and Farmington high schools
and was the chemistry teacher at Davie High for 27 years.
She married Farmington classmate John F. Sparks in
1947, becoming a dairy farmer's wife. They built a house,
planted pecan trees and made the farm their home, rearing
six children. Her husband died in 2002. They were married
55 years.
She was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church.
Since college, she read the Bible from cover to cover ev
ery year. She followed Biblical instructions to feed, clothe
and visit the hungry, needy and sick.
She was industrious, compassionate and had an ency
clopedic memory. She baked and shared thousands of her
signature oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies. She had a green
thumb and a large, flowering lawn. She commanded the
wheel of her Cub Cadet mower, reluctantly yielding at age
92.
Also preceding her in death: son, John Edwin Sparks;
brothers, McKinley, Cedric, Lester and Johnnie; sons-in-
law, Robert "Bob" Segal and Freddy A. Young; and daugh
ters-in-law, Mary B. Sparks and Carol W. Sparks.

voted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She loved spending lime with her family going on vaca
tions and playing family bingo. She also enjoyed watch
ing soap operas and the Price is Right, collecting magnets
and stamps and doing word search puzzles.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband,
Charles Howell; brothers, Henry Lyons, Alfred Lyons,
John Lyons, Frank Lyons and Richmond Lyons; sisters,
Ella Mae Dulin, Evelyn Campbell and Marie Liverpool;
grandson, Nicholas Naylor.

Rev. John Otto Zimmerie
The Rev. John Otto Zimmerie, formerly of Statesville,
died on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020. He was living with his
daughter and son-in- law in Dingmans Ferry, Pa., and diey
were at his side when passed.
Bom in Passaic, NJ. on April 14,1940, he was the son
of the late William and Helen (Lenore) Zimmerie. He
was a graduate of Ramsey High School, Ramsey, NJ. and
served with the U.S. Coast Guard as Radioman Second
Class Petty Officer on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Half
Moon. He retired from the John Boyle Co., where he was
an eastern regional sales manager. He served the Parish
of St. Francis of Assisi, Mocksville, from June 2001 to his
retirement in October 2014. Not only would Deacon John
preach, he assisted with marriage preparation, as well as
witnessed many marriages, served on the building com
mittee, co-assisted on the oversight of the RCIA program,
and held many more titles.
He was also predeceased by: his wife, Ladis Zimmerie;
his brother, William.
Survivors; his children, John-Michael (Tami) of Span
ish Fork, Utah, Susan Marie Cawley (Ron) of Dingmans

For several years, he was the primary healthcare pro
vider for his wife, until they both required more assistance.
They both moved into Davie Nursing and Rehab Center,
MocksvUle. He lived there for the past 18 months.

Uxington and Larry Allan (Robin) Bell of Roanoke, Va.;
a daughter-in-law. Rose Bell of Kannapolis; a brother-in-

Dian Foster Schwartz of Londonberry, NJJ., died on

The oldest daughter of the late Bamey and Jennie Fos
ter of Davie County, she was bora on Dec. 2, 1946. She
graduated from Davie High School and studied on a full
scholarship at the Davis Hospital School of Nursing. After
working as a nurse for several years, she continued her ed
ucation at the New London, Conn. School of Anesthesiol-
ogy, where she earned a certified registered nurse degree.
While in school, she met and maried Donald Schwartz,
who was her husband for 46 years before her dealli. She
retired in 2015 after many years as a nurse anestheist.
Although she lived in New England, part of her heart re
mained in North Carolina, where she kept in touch with
friends and relatives with many trips and phone calls.
She was also preceded in death by: her brother, Dale
Foster; and her sister, Vickie Walser.
Survivors: her children, Laura (Matt) Dunn, and Dan
iel (Anthony) Schwartz of New York City; her grandsons,

Evelyn Ruth Tifiin
Evelyn Ruth Tiffin of Walnut Cove died on July 29,
2020 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Win-
ston-Salem.
She was bom in Hawaii on June 24, 1934 to Ruby
Boles Tiffin and Dwight Wayne Tiffin, a career member of
the U.S. Navy. She grew up in Long Beach, Calif., with
her mother and step-father, Sam Franks, a retired sailor.
She was a registered nurse who served six years in the US
Army Reserves, including a deployment to Italy in 1967-
68.
She and her mother lived in Mocksville with her grand
mother Boles and family for extended periods of time
while her father was deployed. She moved to Winston-Sa-
lem in 1999 to be near the Boles family, and then moved
to Walnut Cove in 2005 to be near her cousins, Peggy and
Rachel Boles.
She was preceded in death by her mother; her father
who was killed in combat on Nov. 1,1944 aboard the USS
Anderson DD HL in Leyte Gulf; and her stepfather, Sam
Franks. Sam's service in the US Navy on the Yangtze Riv
er was depicted in the movie "Sand Pebbles."

Shirley Jean West Gordy Coates Wertz died on Nov.
29,2020.
She was bom on July 16, 1936, a daughter of the late
Ollie and Lilly West. She was the last of her 11 siblings
to pass.
For the past two and a half years, she resided at Davie
Rehabilitation, where she fell and broke her hip. Before
that, she lived with Conley and Amelia Daniel. She was of
the Baptist faith. She loved to sew and quilt before getting
dementia. After that, she was content to sit and color for
hours and hours. She called it finishing a block.
The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.

Diana Rimes and Tim of Venice, Fla., Amelia Daniel and
Conley, and Janice Holder; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grand
children; several step-great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews,

daughter Elizabeth G. \fines; brothers, John West, James
Edward West, Joe West, Dick West, Bill West, Cloyce
West, Thomas West, Aubrey West; and sisters, Margaret

Edward Darrell Burkhart Jr., 72 of Mocksville, died on
Wednesday, Dec. 9,2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical
Center.

Mr. Burkhart was bom on Jan. 17, 1947 in Davidson
County to Edward Darrell and Lucy Winifred Bean Bur
khart. He retired from the NC Forestry Service and was a
member of Fork Baptist Church. Mr. Burkhart served in
the U.S. Navy and was preceded in death by his parents
and his first wife, Martha Jean Cariick Burkhart.

Donald Ray McCoy, 85, of Mocksville, died unespect-
edly at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center on Dec. 6,

He was bora on April 2,1935 to the late Ray Lynn and
Beulah Owens McCoy. He was also preceded in death by
his wife, Alice Colene McCoy, and a sister, Rebecca Cau-
ble (Herb).
Survivors; 2 sons, Craig McCoy (Donna), and Scott
McCoy, and a daughter. Donna Shrewsbury, all of

Mrs. Patricia Anne Caudle Wood, 75, of Salisbury, died
on Wednesday, Dec. 8,2020 at Forsyth Medical Center in
Wuiston-Salem, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was bom Oct. 21,19454n the Farmington commu
nity of Davie County to John
Henry and Rose Ella Taylor
Caudle. She was a member of
Farmington United Method-
ing up a career in industry to
become a full-time mother
and homemaker. She attended
Farmington School and gradu- '
ated from Davie High School. .
Afterwards, she attended bust-
ness college and obtained a de- -
gree in business. As a child, she
grew up in a close community
with many young people who
were fond of getting together at the Caudle home on Satur
day nights for an evening of fun and laughter. In addition
to her friends, family times were important. She especial
ly looked forward to family vacations to the Outer Banks,
where she spent hours combing the beach for sea shells
and other natural treasures. She also loved family trips to
the mountains.
She was a loving person who spent much of her adult
life taking care of others. She was especially close to her
siblings Linda and Robert. As youngsters, they played to
gether in the sandbox and roller skated in the basement
of the family house in Farmington,. Even if they fussed, it
wasn't long before they made up and were off on another
adventure.
Shewas a selfless person, putting the needs of others
before her own.
In addition to her parents of Farmington, she is sur
vived by: her husband, Taft Master Wood; children, Melis
sa Wood Palmer (Michael) of Woodleaf, and John Wood
(Tammy) of Salisbury; siblings, Linda Caudle Smellzer
(Jim) of Charlotte and Robert Caudle (Kay) of Farming-
ton; and grandchildren, William Cody Wood, Blake Allen
Oliphant, Emily Rose Wood, Lily Grace Palmer, and JU-
lian Nicole Wood.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather,

He served in the U.S. Army from
K 1953-1955. In 1953, he married
Re-' Bonnie Rose Nance and they soon
E built a home. In 1980, the couple
jfc, built a mountain cabin in Alleghany
I County, where they enjoyed many
weekends, hosted fall chicken stews
and made lasting friendships. For many years they gar
dened, listened to bluegrass music and spent Sunday after
noons visiting with friends. For about 40 years, he worked
in the lumber yard at MocksvilJe Builders Supply. After
retirement, he and a business partner purchased, remod
eled and sold homes in and around Mocksville for another
20 years. He was a house "flipper" before it became popu-
lar.Acraftsman, he spent lots of time in his shop tinkering
and building small furniture for family
He had a big heart and never met a stranger. He trea
sured sitting on the porch reminiscing with family, friends
and neighbors. He looked forward to going out to break
fast with family and friends. He was always there to lend
a hand; delivering food to families in need, helping build
wheelchair ramps, gathering building supplies for storm
victims and so much more.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and
Richard.
Survivors: his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Nance Beeding;
daughters, Sue Riddle (Larry) and Patsy Holder (Mike);

2020 at UNO Hospital in Orange County.
He was bom on April 23, 1941 in Columbus County,
the son of the late Hubert Hilboum and Rudy Roberts Hil
boum. He is also preceded in death by: his wife, Wanda
Evonnie Hilboum; and 2 sisters Judy Faye Williamson and
Marie Black.
He owned his own business, Hilboum Tire, for 35 years.
He was of the Baptist faith and was an active member of
Trinity Baptist Church. He enjoyed old cars and being a
pan of his church.

Hayden 'Tag' Bowers
Mr. Hayden "Tag" Bowers, 91, of McClamrock Road,
Davie County, died on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 at Wake
Forest Baptist Medical Center in Wnston-Salem.
On Jan. 19, 1929, Mr, Bowers was the third child bom
to his late parents, Overt Winfield and Alice Turrentine
Bowers of Cooleemee, Mr. Bowers enjoyed recalling the
childhood adventures he shared

shared stories about Ft. Bragg,
Pope AFB, Chanute AFB and Elmendorf AFB. He en
joyed spending time with his VFW friends and going to
air shows. Mr. Bowers faithfully attended local Memori
al Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. He frequented the
N.C. Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in order to honor his
younger brother, Eddie. In addition to his active military
service from 1946-1949, Mr. Bowers continued serving
our nation and his fellow veterans for more than 30 years
as a nursing assistant at the W.G. Hefner Veterans Hospital
in Salisbury. His efforts at the VA. eamed a number of
awards, distinctions and recognitions before he semi-re-
tired in 1989.

munications became available, he took joy in connecting
"phone patches" so that missionaries and others working
abroad could talk with their loved ones in and around his
native Davie County. Long before Facebook, he was liked
and followed by good friends on his local net and beyond.
Mr. Bowers was also preceded in death by: his older
brother, Vemon Edward Bowers; his younger sister, Mary
Alice Bowers Bailey; and his younger brothers, Charles
Herbert Bowers and Edgar Lee Bowers, who gave his life
in service of this country.
In addition to 3 siblings and a host of nieces, neph
ews and their children, grandchildren and gieat-grand-
children, Mr. Bowers' survivors include: his wife of 66
years, Jane McClamrock Bowers; his children, Deborah
Garrett (Steve), Hayden "Butch" Bowers, Rex Bowers
(Karen), and Bobby Bowers (Sandy); his grandchildren,
LTC Thomas Kochenauer and Sean Brown (Chanel); and
5 great-grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Jakob, Matthew, Con
nor and Hayden.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowers cherished worshiping the Lord
with their friends at Hope Baptist, Oak Grove Method
ist and First Baptist among other congregations. Chris
Cantrell, their pastor at Hope Baptist, officiated a gravside
service with military honors at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.
26 in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The

Jerry Stanley
Mr. Jerry Stanley, 86, formeiiy of Davie Academy
Road, Mocksvilie, died on Sunday, Dec. 27,2020 at Salem
Terrace in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Stanley was bom on April 24, 1934, in Waxa-
trade and loved car- ' ^ " ^
pentry. Mr. Stanley graduated from Texas A&M in 1956
and was proud to be an Aggie. He was an Elder at Country
Club Road Church of Christ in Roswell, N.M., where the
children referred to him as "Papa Smurf' and was also an
Elder at the Church of Christ of Walla Walla, Wash. While
living there, he spent many summer weekends at Snake
River, where he enjoyed water skiing. He also had many
friends at North Main Street Church of Christ in Mocks
vilie. He was a loving husband, father grandfather, brother
and friend who will be remembered by his smile.
He was also preceded in death by; his wife. Joyce Wil
son Stanley; a sister. Julia Mae Stanley; a granddaughter,
Cari Joyce Brown; and an infant grandchild.
Survivors; 3 children, Jana Karen Stanley Brown
(Steve), and Emest Jay Stanley, all of Mocksvilie, and Jon
Eric Stanley (Cheryl) of Colorado; 3 grandsons, Jon Er
nest Xavier Stanley, Noah Emory McKinley Stanley, and
Jasper Wesley Herschel; and 2 granddaughters, Chloe Ann

Mrs. Dorothy Dyson Stokes, 87 ofAdvance, died Mon
day, Dec. 21, 2020 at Brookdale Senior Living in Win
ston-Salem.
She was bora Sept. 12, 1933 in Davie County to the
late Thomas Monzy and Nannie Reeves Dyson, and
step-mother the late Edna Parks Dyson. Mrs. Stokes re
tired from Western Electric in Winston-Salem after 26
years as a benefits administrator. She was also preceded in
death by; her husband, Bobby Gray Stokes Sr.; brothers,
Leroy Dyson and Jimmy Dyson; and a daughter-in-law,
Janice Poore Stokes.
Survivors; her daughters. Debbie Mabe (Tim) of Clem-
mons, and Donna Bowman (Aubrey) of Advance; a son,
