Miss Susan Benson Gales, formerly of Coolcemee.
died on Sunday, June 21. 2020, at Presbyterian Hospital
in Charlotte.
She was born on July 11, 1953 to the late William and
Libby Gales of Cooleemce. She attended Davie County
Schools in programs for exceptional children. Her fierce

vocational workshop in Cleveland
and was a member of the Rowan Civitan Club for hand
icapped adults doing volunteer work such as greeting at
Rowan Medical Center.
She was also preceded in death by a niece, Lindsay
Gales.

Bill Gales (Frankie Lynn); her nieces and nephews, Scth
Gales (Tara), Brent Campbell and Beth Dodson; and her

School, and worked as a dough specialist with Pizza Hut.

where she sang in the choir and helped with children's
church for many years. She was married to Robert Rogers
for 50 years. Mrs. Rogers will be remembered as a .servant
of God and a kind mother, wife, and friend.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband, Robert
Dwight Rogers; and a son, Dennis Clark Rogers.
Survivors: 3 sons, Robert Shane Rogers, Philip Rogers
and Andrew Rogers (Diana), all of Mock.sville; grand-

Anita Louise Bare-Reich, 66, of Kemersville, died on
June 29,2020 at her residence.
She was bom Sept. 16, 1953 in Davie County to the late
Hardy Clifford Bare and Louise" Lewis Bare. She is also
preceded in death by her husband, Timothy Kempin Reich,
and a brother, Danny Bare.
Survivors; a son, Dennis Wayne Brock and wife Mi
chelle of Kemersville; a daughter. Michelle Downing
Dodge and husband David of Kemersville; a sister, Reta
Bergan; 5 grandchildren, Dustin Downing, Tyler Downing,
Courtney Grannaman, Christina Grannaman and Timmy
Reich; and a great-grandchild, Luke Henry Reich.
She had a feisty spirit and liad a lighting spirit as she
faced many health challenges her entire life. She loved
spending lime with family, especially her grandkids,
great-grandson, nieces and nephews most of all. She loved
watching NASCAR with her family and .spending time
with her dogs. She loved her church and was a founding
member of Hope Baptist Tabernacle.

Mrs. Inez Arnold Lovell, 78, of Woodleaf. died Monday,

She was born Feb. 13, 1942, in Davie County to the
late William Perry and Ella Magelene Rome Arnold. Mrs.

munity mom. For more than 30 years, she had been the
head cook at Miller's. Mrs. Lovell had also been the head
custodian at South Davie Middle School for many years.

Mr. Clarence "C.W." Woodrow Foster Jr., 80, of Ad
vance, died on Wednesday, July 8.2020.
He was bom in Davie County on Feb. 10. 1940 to the
late Clarence Wot)drow Foster Sr. and Georgia Marie Da
vis Foster, He is also preceded in death by a son. Richard
Kevin Foster.
Surviving: his wife of 60 years. Joyce Foster; a daugh
ter. Amanda Smith (David): a daughter-in-law. Kim Foster;
5 grandchildren. Ryan Fo.ster. Bethany Foster, Hampton
Smith. Noble Smith, and Zayla Smith; and a sister, Texie

Mr. Foster was an optician and worked at S. Galeski,
Crown Drugs, and Eckerds where he met and cared for
many people. After retiring, he worked at The Tire Shop
in Advance where he was suiTounded by many of hi.s old
friends while continually making new ones. While many
people called him -'Red." "Leggs." or "Whirlee;" he was
best known as a friend. Mr. Foster was quite an entertain
er and cook and was renowned for his chicken .stews and
collard greens cooked in a wash pot on an open fire and his
New Year's Day celebrations. Mr. Foster will be missed for
;his positive encouragement and friendship.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Frye Allen, 90, of the Comatzer com
munity, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at her home,
after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was surrounded
by her family and caregivers.BShe was born Oct. 9, 1929 to
the late Benjamin Floyd "Coun
try" and Pearl Potts Frye. She
was a graduate of Shady Grove,
Advance Class of 1948. She
had been employed by Hanes
as a seamstress. She was a faith
ful menlber of Cornatzer Bap
tist Church where her love for
children led her to be a church
nursery worker for 35 years.
She also enjoyed singing in the
choir. She will be remembered
for her love for the Lord, her
servant heail and kind personal
ity. Her life was a living exam
ple of Proverbs 31, a virtuous woman, and her influence
will forever remain in the lives of people who knew her.
She treasured her children and loved every moment she
spent with them. She especially loved her role as Mamaw,
Nannie and Nana. She was also devoted to the people in
her community. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, lish-
ing, gardening and working in her yard.
She was also preceded in death by; a grandson, Lucas
Grubbs; and siblings, Lindsey Frye, Carl Frye, Jim Frye,
and Polly Fivecoat.
Survivors: her husband and best friend of 71 years. Ear

Chazz attended Young Children Early Learning Center

Glen Edward 'Eddie' Tate
Glen Edward "Eddie" Tate. 66, died unexpectedly in his
home on July 7.2020.
He was born in Greenville, S.C. to Joe and Betty Tate.
He spent much of hi.s life in Traveler's Rest, S.C.. before
migrating to N. Myrtle Beach. S.C. He has lived in Davie
County for the pa.st 20 years with his best friend and life
partner, Brenda Sofley Long. He was a gardener and plant
lover. He spent 38 years in a career in horticulture. He and
Brenda, along with his friend Charles Rubin, owned and
operated a small plant nursery at their home on US 158. He
had a great sense of humor, always kept those around him
laughing, and loved his dog, Scooter.

Ala., and TC Tate (Bailey) of Marietta, S.C.; 3 grandchil
dren, Parker, Claire, and Max Tate: brother, Larry Tate

He attended Surry County Schools and was a veteran of

Hdwin Franklin Nolley. 87. of Newton, died on July 21,
2020 at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory.
He was bom on Oct. 7. 1932 in Cooleemee to parents

state for his work with farmer.s and 4-H. He retired Dec.
31.1988. He was commissioned second lieutenant US
Army Quartermaster Corps in 1954 from ROTC at Clem-
son. He .served 29 years in the Army and Army Reserve
in capacities to include special services officer in Metz,
France (1956); company commander, 108th Division,
Hickory; and the battalion commander, 518th Regiment,
Winston-Salcm. He retired in 1983 as a colonel. He loved
serving his community through his job and with civic
groups. He had a passion for serving his God on mission
(rips with the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, where
he served as cider and deacon. He went on 22 mission
trips in the USA and Me.xico. If he was not able to go, he
.sent his truck and tools. He loved building with Habitat
for Humanity where he served on building teams in Hun
gary and Nicaragua as well as countless local builds. He
served as president and it. governor of the Kiwanis Club
of Newton, member of Sherrills Ford Lions Club, director
and president of Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley,
board member of Carolina Farm Credit and member of the
Eastern Catawba County Cooperative Christian Ministries
Board. He will be remembered for his love of family, God,
service to community and all things Clemson. He loved
his Tigers and never missed watching a game. Even his
tools were spray painted orange. He and wife Jean enjoyed
traveling and seeing the world though home exchanges in
several countries and many trips in the US.A. After re
tirement they built a home on Lake Norman where tliey
enjoyed life for 35 years,

Nolley of Newton; daughter, Suzanne Rhinehart and hus
band Ray of Newton; daughter, Gail Nolley Teem and
husband Michael of Callawassie Island, S.C; son, Frank

chel Teem Gentry and husband Jonathan, Laura Rliinehiul
Sparks and husband Jason, Ryne Teem and wife Anna,
Taylor Rhinehart and wife LeAnna. and Mason and Payton
Nolley; 2 great-grandchildren, Lily and James and 2 more
to arrive soon; and Sian and Lucy Colman-Black.who
were like granddaughters to him, from Ireland.
He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Hulda
Nolley. sister Ann Nolley Hancock and her husband Da
vid.

Mrs. Catherine West Fry, 90 of Advance, died on Tues
day, July 28,2020 at the Danby Hou.se Assisted Living in
Winston-Salem, where she was a resident since January
2015.
She was born Jan. 2, 1930 in Davie County to the late
John Asbury West and Maitie Lola McBride West. She
graduated from Farminglon High School in 1948 and was
employed at Hanes Knitwear in Winston-Salem for a short
while. She manied David Johnson Fry on Jan. 9.1952 and
was married for 47 yeans at the time of his death in 1999.
They had one son, Bryan Keith Fry, who died in 2016.
She was also preceded in death by: brother, Charles
Mailin West, John Clint (Lorena B.) West; sisters, Zel-
ma Rea (Foy) Reavis, Josephine Nancy Reavis, Laura
Lee (Will) Fry; Emma Elizabeth (Albert) Haiiman, infant

from Forsyth Hospital after 25 years.

gene Myers, who died in 2009; and a brother. Wade King.

nephews.
A funeral service was conducted at 11:30 a.m. Sunday,
Aug. 16 at Smith Grove United Methodist Church, under
the arbor and trees, with the Rev. Danen Crotts.the Rev.
Chris Clontz and Jeffrey Cornatzer officiating. Burial fol
lowed in the church cemetery. The family received friends
from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at Eaton Funeral Home.

Nancy Madge Kelly Murphy
Nancy Madge Kelly Murphy, 85,of Mocksvnie,died at
home on Aug. 11,2020.
She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., on March 20,1935, to
the late Thomas Patrick and Margaret Whitehead Kelly.
She lived in Mendham. NJ. and Hempstead, N.Y. before
moving as a teenager to Win-
ston-Salem where she gradu- Wm
an active life. She was a charter
member of the Mocksville Jaycettes and a member of the
Mocksville Woman's Club where she served as treasur
er and was voted as an Outstanding Junior Member. For
10 years she served as the chair of the Davie County Red
Cross Blood Mobile. For more than 30 years, she volun
teered in the History Room of the Davie County Public
Library, where she transcribed, compiled, indexed, and
published five books of Davie County Records, including
maiTiage and census records, and collaborated on the pub
lication of the County Cemetery Records. She also served
as editor of the Davie Dossier. For all her volunteer ac
tivities, she was honored twice by NC Gov. Jim Hunt as
an Outstanding Nonh Carolina Volunteer. Her husband's
interest in flying involved them with Twin Lakes Aviation
where she served as corporate treasurer. She also served as
the ofllce manager of Twin Lakes Airport for more than 25
years. Prior to the progression of the Muscular Dystrophy
she loved to read, knit, do genealogy research, and was a
long-time member of a bridge club.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, William
"Pete" Kelly.
Surviving: her husband of the home; 2 sons, Steven
Murphy (Diane) of Raleigh and Michael Murphy (Amy)
of Bonney Lake, Wash.; 5 grandchildren, Eric and Joshua
of Sweden, Daniel of Pullman, Wash., and Eryn and Zach-
ary of Raleigh; a niece, Dr. Kathleen Kelly of Somerset,
N.J.; and a nephew, Thomas Kelly (Kimberly) of Boca
Raton, Fla.

Mr. James Milton Rumley, 78, of Cross Street. Coolee-

Mr. Lonnic Harold Smith Jr., 92. bom March 20, 1928
in Mocksville, died on Aug. 10. 2020, at home with his
friends and family after a brief battle with lung cancer.
He was preceded in death by: his wife (and the love of

Mr. Smith was a World War j
duties as he had in the Navy
for the Navy. Army but primarily the Air Force. His duty
stations included bases throughout America. Hawaii, Mid
way Islands and Germany. He retired to Jacksonville, Tex
as after having completed 40 years of military and govem-
ment service combined.
On May 4.2018, he was an honored guest on the Dallas/
Fort Worth Honor Flight 37 to Washington DC honoring
World War II veterans and received a hero's welcome. He
and Bettye attended Central Bapli.st Church and were ac
tive in the church and community. They fostered children
and became strong advocates for the Buckner Children's
Home Foundation. He also loved helping Bettye with her
genealogy research and traveled many places in search of
family history.
They did not have children of their own, but were
blessed with many nieces and nephews to include: Teresa
Smith Correll, Russell Smith, Brenda Ellis Graham, Judy
Ellis Thompson, Robbie Ellis, Kathy Smith Thompson.
Anne Marie Smith Scoggins, Sharon Smith Dubin. Robert
Eugene Smith, Carolyn Smith Watson, Charles Garwood
and Sue Garwood Sidden; other survivors, friends Boni

James F. Mesirner. 64, died on Aug. 22, 2020 after a
valiant battle with cancer.
He was a loving father, brother, uncle, and friend. He
was born in Salisbury on May 9, 1956 to the late James
A. Mesimer and Mildred C. Williams Mesimer. He was
a 1974 graduate of West Rowan High School. He served
in the U.S. Army during the close of the Vietnam War and
soon after his honorable discharge, began working for the
VA Medical Center in Salisbury. He retired at the age of 46
from the Salisbury National Cemetery and spent the latter
period of his life prioritizing time with those he held most
dear. He did all he could to help a family member or friend
in need; those who knew him be.st will always remember
his willingness to help others where and when he could.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 0054 of
Cooleemec,
Survivors: his son. James Michael "Mitchell" Mesimer
of Modesto. Calif.; his sisters, Katliy Blanc of Yanceyville
and Fatly Merrell of Oxford; and many nieces, nephews
and a greai-great-niece.

Dr. William Howard "Billy" Seals Jr., 54, of Mock.s-
ville, died on Tuesday, Aug. 25,2020 at Forsyth Medical
Center.
He was bom Dec. 14, 1965 in Yadkin County to Wil
liam Howard Sr. and Ola Mae "

Easley, S.C. He became the pastor of Southslde Baptist
Church in Yadkinville where he served for the past 25
years. At Southside, the congregation built a new facility
which he was able to coordinate. He continued to serve
Christ through the years by evangelizing, preaching, and
singing the gospel with his family sometimes, in as many
as 74 churches throughout the southeast in a year. He was
instrumental in the leadership of securing the Personhood
Bill in Yadkin County. This bill was the first of its kind in
the United States to protect unborn children. Seats was
also owner and operator of Farmington Mall and worked
as an auctioneer with Farmington Mall Auctions of which
he owned for the past 38 years.
He was preceded in death by: his father. William How
ard Seats Sr.: and by his daughter, Katie Elisabeth Seats
Shook.
Surviving: his wife of 34 years, Teresa Elaine Seats of
the home; his son, William "Abel" Seats and wife Lauren;
son-ill-law, Chad Shook; his mother, Ola Mae Seats; and 2
grandsons. Colton Shook and Charlie Shook.
The body was available for public viewing Friday.
Aug. 28 at Southside Baptist Church. He lie in-state at
Southside from 1-2 p.m. Saturday. His funeral service was
at 2 p.m. Saturday at Southside by Drs. Ron Baity and Al
len Barker and Preacher Matthew Wyatt. Burial followed
in Farmington Cemeteiy.

Mrs. Hvelyn "Sally" Fay Transou Golliher, 91, died at

The Transou family can be traced to early Moravian
settlers of Bethabara and Old Salem, where she had a life
long connection. In the 1700s, one of the Transou settlers
repaired the famous water pump in the'Old Salem tosyn
square, which is still working today. She passed on her
love of crafts to her late daughter, Wendy Jhne Golliher
Worrell, svho died in 2017. Known for her love of the
mountains, kindness, joyful smile, enthusiasm and inde
pendent spirit, shc^will be remembered for her sense of
humor and open heart.
Survivors: her husband of 71 years. Bob Golliher: a

Mr. George Kenneth Carter Jr., 84, of Lexington, died
Wednesday, Septi 16, 2020 at his home.
He was born on July 11, 1936 in Davie County to the
late George Kenneth Cancr Sr. and Dora Lillian Nance
Carter. Mr. Carter attended Dulin United Methodist
Church and No Creek Primitive Baptist Church as a child.
As an accomplished, self-made entrepreneur, he owned
numerous commercial and residential properties includ
ing Carter's Used Cars, Ken's Mobile Homes, and Jot Em
Down Store, where the neighborhood children would visit
to listen to the jukebox. He enjoyed working and collect
ing antique cars.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, J.B. Carter,
and a special friend of his later years, Jewell Botts.

sister-in-law, Lucy Hendrix Carter; 2 nieces, Kathy Deese

Willie Jerome'Geedy'Carter
Willie Jerome "Geedy" Cailer, 72. of Cooleemee, died
Saturday Sept. 19. 2020 at Glen Kiser Hospice of Salis
bury.
He was born May 5. 1948 in Rowan County, the son
of the late Willie Gray Caner and Cora Louise (Fowler)
Caller. He attended school in Davie County. He worked
for North Carolina Finishing, and Jockey for more than
50 years. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and working on
cars.
Survivors; his wife. Frances (Blackweli) Carter; son,
Jerome Carter: daughters, Lisa Carter, Francine Carter,
and Elaine Carter; brother. Melvin Carter (Wanda); sister,
Rosa Carter; grandchildren, Aaron Feldcr, Joshua Young,
Tykedrick Gad.son; a great-granddaughter; .several nieces
and nephews; and an aunt, Lthel Payne.
A public visitation was held from noon-5 p.m. Tuesday,
Sept, 22 at Davie Funeral Service ofMocksviiic. A private
family graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 23 at
Liberty AME Zioti Church Cemetery in Mocksville.

Alien Robert Eddleman
Allen Roben Eddleman, 48. died on TLie<;day, Sepl.l5,
2020 at home.
He was born in Yadkiii County on April 10, 1972, a
son of Robert '3obby" Allen Eddleman and Ruby Groce
Powe. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandpar
ents; David and Laura Groce and paternal grandparents;
Robert and Margaret Eddleman.
He was a strong believer in Jesus Christ. He was a
unique fellow who loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting,
working on cars, going to the beach and was a skilled car
penter but most of all he loved his Lord.
Also surviving: his wife, Maria Eddleman. 2 daughters,
Carley Eddleman and Alana Eddleman; siblings. David
Eddleman, Bobbie Caselles (Frank) and^Kimberly Ma-
aallanes (Jason); and his Ifurry companions, Izzy and B.J.

Opal Irene Freeman
Mrs. Opal Irene Freeman. 81, of Dogtrot Road, Mocks-
ville, died Sunday, Sept. 13.2020 at her home.
She was bom on Sept. 30. 1938 in Henry County, Va.
to the late G.V. and Lizzie Barncycastle Plott Whiten. Mrs.
Freeman was a selficss woman, always putting others first,
and showed unconditional love that only a mother could
show. She is in a place where she will never suffer again.
Mrs. Freeman will be remembered as a loving sister, wife,
mother, and friend.
She was also preceded in death by: her husband. Cole
Freeman; and 2 sons. Gregory Keith Freeman and Edgai
Leslie Freeman.
Survivors; 3 sons, Mark Freeman. David Freeman, and
Michael Freeman; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchil
dren.
