Miller sisters from Cooleemee, Mary Alice M. Hasty
and Hazel M. Winfree, compiled the biographies of all
the men from Davie County serving in the Civil War.
They gathered information for five years, ending in
2008. Their hand-written bios on notebook paper were
given to Marie Craig and Brenda Bailey, cousins, for
typing. The book was published by McFarland in 2009.
It received an award from the North Carolina Society of
Historians.
There are 1,147 biographies in this book. Photos were
included where possible. It is indexed and contains 278
pages. During their research, data was obtained that
showed 55 deaths in the war not listed on the war
memorial on the town square. These were added later
with a special dedication.
Entries in the index list the section numbers, not page
numbers. Appendix 1 lists regiments and members.
Appendix 2 describes township names from 1790.

Veterans’ Cemeteries
This morning at 9:00 I attended a graveside service for my 90 year old neighbor who died suddenly 1.5 weeks ago. It
was a pleasant autumn day with friends. The service was brief, but meaningful. Special attention was given to
recognize his years of service in Korea and Vietnam. The schedule of burials was full, so this service had to be delayed
from the time of his death. I understand there are five every day. The honor guard was serious and deliberate in the
firing salute, playing of Taps, and folding of flag on his coffin. There’s something very poignant about hearing Taps in
a cemetery. Several hillsides are covered in graves. It made me remember another service I had attended there for a
member of my family. The description follows.
The Steadfast Tin Soldier
My grandfather's half-brother, Bert, 90 years old, died near Christmas a few years ago. Their father had been
married twice -- the first marriage included eleven children and the second had six children. There was a wide range of
ages of these 17 children. Bert was buried at the Veterans' Administration Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, on
one of the coldest, windy days of winter.
It was a short, but special service in an open-sided shelter on a hilltop at the VA cemetery. The wind was really
cold, but I had bundled up. There were ten men from ages 23 to 93 who were the honor guard in military uniforms, but
no overcoats. One real old black man looked like he had had a stroke and couldn't use his right arm at all. I felt sorry for
him in the cold weather. He had to use his left arm to lift up his right arm to salute. It was meaningful to me to see his
dedication to service.
A few weeks before this funeral, I read a library book,The Steadfast Tin Soldier, to my youngest grandson.I
saw an example of the principle of this book at my granduncle's funeral.
Civil War Incident
(from the files at Davie County Public Library History Room): Told by Leon Foster on 3 August 1974. Leon’s father
was Richard Monroe Foster, called “Molar” Molar’s father was Henry Foster who married Elvira Cranfill. Henry was
a soldier in the Civil War when word was brought to him that Elvira had died and he asked permission to go home for
the funeral. The officer refused to give permission. Listening was a man named Chaffin who belonged to the Home
Guard. Chaffin asked why Henry Foster was refused the permission and the reply came, “He won’t come back.”
Chaffin said, “Yes, he will and if he doesn’t I will take his place.” The officer agreed to that arrangement and Henry did
go home for his wife’s funeral. She was buried at Olive Branch, but the grave was never marked. The husband kept his
word and returned to duty. Leon said, “My father was only five years old, but had heard his father tell the story many
times.” (Richard had a sister named Bulah.)
