1941 Business Directory
My friend, Bill Shelton, loaned me the little booklet pictured here. This booklet was sponsored by his father,
L.S. (Leslie Smoot) Shelton who was the father of 7 children. He farmed in the Farmington area, and had a
store on the south side of Depot Street that sold various items such as fertilizer, farming supplies, and Kaiser
and Frazer cars. Bill described his father as a visionary man.
www.FindAGrave.com has a photo of his tombstone. Dates are: 19 September 1899 - 14 May 1980.
In the 1940 Davie County census, we see L.S. Shelton, Sr.,
40; Abbie, 40; Helena, 14; Hallie Marie, 12; Bettie Jean,
10; L.S. Jr., 8; Edna Ann, 6; and Lenard, 1. They lived in
the Farmington township. (In the 1930 census, they are
living in the Clarksville township.) L.S. was a farmer and
truck hauler. This 1940 census didn’t list him as a store
owner, but the booklet had his own ad included.
The front cover of the booklet reads:
Davie County Guide
and
Business Directory
March 1941.
Area: 165,120 acres.
Population: 14,909.
Principal income Sources:
textile manufacturing
dairying -- tobacco

Compliments of
L.S. Shelton.
The only thing that would be the same is the area. The
population in 2017 was 42,456.
