ASSISTING PEOPLE OF COLOR TO COMPILE FAMILY HISTORY
1850 US CENSUS FOR DAVIE COUNTY, FREE BLACKS, page 4 and 5
There were 74 Free Blacks listed in the Davie
County 1850 Census. The table above lists them.
The first column enumerates them from 1 to 74.
The second column gives the page number. The
third column lists the line on that page. The names
are in the fourth column. I did not put male or
female for obvious names, but there were a few
unusual names, like Pleasant and Ferebe for first
names and I put male or female by the name. Age
is next column. M or B means Mulatto or Black.
Career is next, followed by place of birth. The last
column shows which household they were listed
with. If the cell is blank, it means they had their
own home. All of these Free Blacks had surnames,
as opposed to Slaves who had only first names.
Number 39, William Scott, for example, had his
own home with wife and two children. Number 62
had the biggest family.
The 1850 census did not list townships, so it
would be different to determine where these people
lived in 1850. 1860 census, however, did list
townships.

Davie Dossier, January 2018 page 6
1860 US CENSUS FOR DAVIE COUNTY, FREE BLACKS, page 6, 7 and 8
The directions for interpreting 1860 census are
similar to the 1850 census. Neither of these census
records gave persons’ relationships to each other. We
can only speculate why there is a little child of color
with a white family. Hopefully, that was to create a
good home situation for an orphan or child.. I attempted
to learn more about the difference in being Black and
Mulatto, but probably the census taker just guessed.
These charts use the terms “Black and Mulatto” as
presented at that time. There is no intent of judgement
in any of this. People of color have a very difficult time
researching their families, and perhaps this may create a
data base that would be helpful. It would be comforting
to find that your family was free and not enslaved.
This was also a very tough time to be raising a family
and creating a career to provide an income to your
family. Working a farm, which is what most families
did, would be a lot of hard work in the hot sun and
without power equipment and being subject to storm
damage.
These people worked the land and a few were
creative in being blacksmiths, coopers, painters, and
carpenters.
