On November 6, 2016, I emailed you directions for reading the newspapers online. I’ll repeat it here in case you misplaced it. The Davie County Public Library has been working to get digitized newspapers and obituaries online. The work has not been totally completed, but you’ll be able to find some very helpful material at the Website above. NEWSPAPER FILES: If you click on the words “Newspaper Files from Davie County” on this site, you will be able to read many newspapers from Davie. They are also searchable. At the very top of the page that lists the years, type in a name that you would like to research. Or, you can choose a date to be able to browse that newspaper. These are big files, so you’ll need to wait for the page to load. OBITUARIES: at the Website: http://www.daviecountync.gov/440/Genealogy-Local-History, click on Obituaries from Davie County. You can also search for a name at the top of the screen. If a year or name doesn’t appear, it probably means that it hasn’t been uploaded yet. Again, they’re not totally finished with uploading everything. FOLD3: Notice also at http://www.daviecountync.gov/440/Genealogy-Local-History, that you can use Fold3 at your own computer at home if you have a Davie County Public Library card. This Website has predominantly military records, but also includes other records. The name refers to the way that the US flag is folded. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. FUTURE DATA ABOUT CHURCHES: Three volunteers are compiling information about the oldest churches in Davie County, and that will be uploaded soon. Look for it on this same page listed above. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. BURIAL RECORDS: http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/davie/index.htm LAND RECORDS: How to trace land records online: www.daviencrod.org; click the acknowledge button; click Scanned Index Books; at left click 1-Grantor [seller] or 2-Grantee [buyer]; at left, click year range; at left, type in surname after the field Human; at left, click surname. Look in first column for given names starting with A-H; second column I-O; third column P-Z. This will give book and page name. Type these numbers in fields at top right. If you can find the exact location, you’ll want to document that by providing latitude and longitude numbers. To find L/L, open Google Maps. Double-click with the left mouse button on the location that you’ve found. The popup box will contain your numbers. Example: Mocksville High School location was 35.899473, -80.555957. There are 4 different ways to write the L/L location, but this decimal method is the easiest. In Google Maps you can also search with these numbers to pin point a spot on a map. You can also use them in a GPS. Davie Dossier, April 2017 page 4 WORLD WAR ONE There is a lot of information and emphasis on the 100th anniversary of this “War to End All Wars”. Perhaps you’re watching the PBS specials about it. A high school student here in Davie has been giving seminars about the war. Two of the five sessions are on April 22 and 29 at the Davie County Public Library at 2 pm. The public is invited to these. Davie County in World War One by Marie Craig gives biographies of the 670 men and 3 women who served. See page 9 for information for ordering this book. Champion Recently, while identifying the parents of a resident of Madison County, Indiana, it was necessary to “follow” the ancestors of that family from North Carolina. Aquila Moore was the son of George and Mary Moore. They, and some of the other children of George and Mary, first appeared in Madison County, Indiana, about the year 1836. They had traveled there from Rowan and Davie Counties in North Carolina. Rowan and Davie Counties, North Carolina George Moore married Mary Beck in Rowan County on 15 December 1798.1,2 The year previous to the marriage, George Moore acquired 80 acres on Dutchmans Creek.3 And, the year preceding this, George Moore and Aquilla Beck together were the witnesses of a deed.4 George Moore and Aquilla Beck both acquired other lands as well in the same general location on Dutchmans Creek. One particular land transaction that occurred was that between Aquilla Beck and Editha Beck. (Editha Beck was most likely the widow of Aquilla’s son, John, and thus his daughter-in-law rather than his daughter.) According to the deed:5 Aquilla Beck deeded to Editha Beck, daughter, all of his stock, plantation, household and kitchen furniture, and 190 acres on Dutchmans Creek where Aquilla lived - after Edith’s death the property was to go to her son John Beck. As found in Jo White Linn’s compilation, 1815 Rowan County, North Carolina, Tax List, the tax list of Capt. Pierce’s Company included: 6 Acquilla Beck no white or black polls 175 acres John Beck (decd) by Jas. Guard 0 white, 1 black poll 45 acres George More Jr. 1 white, 1 black poll 270 acres William More 1 white, 0 black polls George More Sr. by George Moore Jr. no white or black polls 278 acres John Beck, deceased, could be Aquilla Beck’s son and husband of Editha Beck (in the land transaction found above). 1 "North Carolina, County Marriages, 1762-1979," digital images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org : accessed 7 December 2015), George Moore and Mary Beck, 1798; George Moore and William Moore were bound to Manuele Chambers, Chairman of the court, in the sum of 500 Pounds; George Moore made an application to marry Mary Beck and George Moore signed with his mark. 2 Rowan County, North Carolina, marriage bond (1798), Moore-Beck; Rowan Public Library, Salisbury; The Bondsman was William Moore and the Witness was Edwin J. George Moore, and both John and Aquilla Beck, are found in census records for Rowan County: 17908: George Murr: all free whites: 1 male 16 and up; 3 females. 18009: George Moore: all free whites: 1 male under 10; 1 male 16-25; 1 female 16-25. 181010: George Moore: all free whites: 3 males under 10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 26-44; 2 females under 10; 1 female 26-44. 182011: George Moore: all free whites: 2 males under 10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 16-18, 1 male 18-25; 1 male 26-44; 2 females under 10; 2 females 26-44. 183012: George Moore, Sr.: all free whites: 1 male 10-14; 1 male 15-19; 1 male 50-59; 1 female 10-14; 1 female 15-19; 1 female 50-59. 179013: Aquillah Beach: all free whites: 1 male 16 and up; 2 males under 16; 4 females. 180014: Aquilla Beck: all free whites: 2 males under 10; 1 male 16-25; 1 male 45 and over; 2 females under 10; 2 females 10-15; 1 female 45 and over. 181015: John Beck: all free whites: 1 male 10-15; 2 males 16-25; 1 male 45 and over; 1 female under 10; 2 females 10-15; 3 females 16-25; 1 female 45 and over. Davie Dossier, April 2017 page 9 Madison County, Indiana At some point in the 1840s, Editha Beck migrated to Madison County, Indiana, seemingly with her son John and his family. John and Editha are listed together in census entries from 1850 through 1880 in Madison County. The Beck family lived in the same Madison County neighborhood as George Moore: in 1850, the John Beck household was enumerated one household before George Moore, and in 1860, five households away from George Moore. Editha Beck died in 1885 and was buried in Vinson Memorial Park, Summitville, Madison County, Indiana.20 John (25 February 1815 – 18 October 1901) is buried there as well.21 John’s will mentions his wife, Mary E.; his son, Henry V.; and his daughter Marth/Marthe E. Wood/Woods and Amanda M. Herold.22 As John and Mary E. Shelton married in Davie County, North Carolina on 4 July 1846, it is likely that Amanda was John’s daughter from his first marriage.23 Bio of Margaret B. Champion: Margaret B.
