Jan - JunDA VIE RECORD, Wednesday, January 5,1927 A. T. Grant, Sr. Passes A pall of sadness spread over tlietown^early Sa'urday morning when it-wis learned thai Mr. A. T. dranlrSr., the oldest resident of the city, had died about four o'clock. Mr. Grant had been in declining health for the past two months, having been confined to His room since early in November. His condition was not considered •ierious and his death came a-s a ihock to his many fiieiids tbrough- out the town and county. Mr Grant was born near Huutsvllle, Vadkin county, in June, 1837. and vro^'ueaiing bis 90th birthday. He moved to Jerusalem township ill early life and lived there until a bout 40 5 ears ago wnen he moved to Mocksville. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and served through the four years of the war, (aking part in many of tJje big battles He was a brave and fear- follower of .General Lee. He was elected- Clerk of the Davie county Superior Court, in 1882, and filled that 'position for aho.U thirty-eight years. He was one of the leading workers in the Metho dist church, serving as Sunday tchool superintendent, for many /ears: Mr. Grant is survived by three haughiers, .Misses Annie and Sallie Grant of this city.' Mrs. G k Daniel, of R. 4. and one son, A t. Grant, Jr., of this city. The funeral services were held at the |iome Sunday afternowii nt 2:30 o'clock by Rev. R. S Howie, past or of the dece^ised, and the body laid to rest at kose cemetery be side his wife who died about 24 years ago. The services at the grave were conducted by Mocks- viJle Council No 2261 Jr. O. U. A. M , of which order deceased was <m hohoraiv member. The funeral procession was one of 'lite largest rver seen here, uespite the severe cold weaiher. Mir. Grant was very active in politics and was well known throughout this section of the state. D. Booe, de stroyed by fire together-with bis little fonr-^ontbs old son, who was in bed when the fire occurred. Mr. Booe was away from home at work, while his wifs was at the barn milking. A three-year-old sou was in the bouse, but made bis escape. The house and all of the contents were destroyed. Mr. Booe carried no insurance. The death of their little SOD is the saddest feature of the fire, and the loss of their home and everything they.had is also sad. It is not know whether the bouse caught from a defective flue or. an incubator. .Mr. Booe is left in de stitute clrcnmstances and if any of our readers wish to coniribute to this bereaved family they can send* check or'money to the Record of fice which will be ackuowiedged and turned over to the family. L. Thompsou. Richard Monroe Williams Tribute to Old Soldier. Mr. Richard Monroe Williams, an aged veteran, passed away at a hospital in Raleigh Jan. 9th. The body was laid to rest at Bethlehem Jan. 15th. He was a sou of Ann "Dismuke" 'and Dr. Francis Williams, July 28th. .1833. and was oue of Davie county's old est and best . loved citizens- He waf'converted 41 years ago and has lived a true Christian life ever since and has been a great exam ple to all who knew him. Mr. Dwig gins bad been in bad health for some time, bnt was able to be np and about until early Wednesday merning when he was stricken sud denly. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. V. Brown, of Yadkin county, assis ted by Rev. B. M. Avett, of this city at three o'clock "Friday afternoon and the body laid to rest in Center graveyard. Mr. Dwig gins is survived by two sons and two daughters, besides ipauy re latives and f riends. He was a Con federate vsteran and served dur ing the great struggle from 1862 to 1865. Only a few of the soldiers of this great war are left in Davie county. Mr. Dwiggins was a mem ber of Ijames X Roads Baptist church, . Sylvester Taylor, 20 years old, of' Salisbury, was lodged in the Mocksville jail at/four o'clock Mon day morning, charged with rnn- iqg over and killing Phenie Peoples, colored. Taylor, accompanied by bis father and sister, and Miss Mary Jackson, were on their way from Cooleemee to Salisbury in a Buick roadster shortly after 10 o'clock Sunday night. When near Dangs- ston's store several colored people were walking down the road going bomeirem church. The Peoples woman and her husband were iu the middle of the road, Taylor says, wheu he blew his boru. Just be fore the car readied them, they jumped to the right side of the road in front of the car. The wo man was killed instantly and her husband was carried to a Salisbury hospital. Coroner Deutiy Foster summoned a jury and an inquest was held over the body of the wo man. The jury rendered a verdkt that the negro came to her death at the liands of Taylor, who was driving at a fast, reckless gait. Taylor will be tried at the August term of court. James A.
