Captaiu Harding was a na« tive of Yadkin couiity. the sou of WilUatu and Jennie Speer Harding. He came to Davie in 1900 and spent the remainder of bis life* on the estate near Faimtngion which he purchased and developed. At the age of 17 he enliiited in Company 1. 28th regiment of North Carolina Infantry and served with distinction throughout the four yeaxs of the War Between the States. He was wounded three times, once at the battle of Reams Stattott in Virginia and seriou.sly at the battle of Gettysburg. At this battle a minnie bsti in the shouldec came very near being fatal and be canted it until bis deatb. Mr. Younco; however, was at the fun eral, and Mr. Brinklcy had pre viously called cit the Leonard home. To handle the tr.Tffic and keep the streets open for the f-uneral procession eight or ten members of the state 'highway paU'ol were present and WInstoii-Salem sent over a dozen oillccrs to assist. Tioker Hairston, ante-bellum ne gro. believed to have been the old« est man in this section of the state, passed away in his little cabin last Saturday i n Davidson county. While tio record was kept as to his age, "Uncle Tinker," as he was called by his white and colored friends, believed that he was no less than 103 vears old. During slavery days. Tinker' was owned by tbe late Peter Hairstoo, who was pet haps the largest land owner in this sec tion of Kofth Carolina. The entire town was shocked last Tuesday night when a mes«age was received by S M. Call, lelling of the death of his brother, W^alter Call, which occurred in a Wilson hospital atont nine o'clock Tues day night.^ Mr. Call who held a nosltion with an oil mill in Wilson, was doing some work on the build Ing when he fell'and received a crushed skull and a broken neck Three other men were Injur^ in the accident, one said to be fatally. Mr S. M. Call and sisters. Mrs. J. H. Thompson and Miss Martha Call, of this city, and Mrs H. C. Sprinkle, of Salisbury. -left early Wednesday morning for'Wilson. The funeral and burial services were held in that cttv Thursday [ Mr Call was a member of the' Methodist church, and was one of [ the leading citizens of WibonJ His death brought sadness to hand-' reds of friends in Wilson and Mocksville. Call He spent his childhood an.d young 'manhood in Mocksville,-later going to Alabama where he held a position for several years in a cotton oil mill. He re turned to this state about fifteen years ago, and located in- Wilson where be held a position with a big oil mill. He sj^nt his' summer va cations in this city at his old home and his visits were always tooaed forward to by bis loved ones He was a good man and bis death has cast a gloom over the town.' We feel. that it is well with him. WililamH. Bailey. William H. Bailey, 89, died early last Tuesday morning at the State Hospital, Morganton, where be had spent the last 20 years of his life. The body was brought to Mocksville, where funeral' services, were conducted Wednesday after noon at three o'clock at the home of Misses Bertha and Alice Lee, neices of the deceased. Rev. W. I. Howell conducted the services. The body was carried to Rose ceihetery and laid to rest. Mr. Bailey was a na tive of Davie county, being born in Mocksville on June 22, 1843. He enlisted as a soldier in the Confede rate Army. After the war ended. he returned to his old home -and later entered the mercandle bnsi-' oess. He sold goads-here for 40' years, until 20 years ago when his' health failed and he went to -Mor J ganton for' treatment. ^ He was a member of the /docksville Presby terian cbnrch. L C. Holton Mr L.
