Mrs. Edna McClamrock Whita-
ker, 48, wtfe of Lonnte L. Whlta-
ker, died suddenly about 10 p. m.
on Tune 24th. of a heart attack at
her home near Oak Grove.
Mrs. \Vh leaker wna a daughter
of C. L. McClamrock and the late
Mrs Liille Douthit McClamrock.
of Route 3. This was the second
death In that family within less
than a week. Mrs. Whitakor's
brother, A. M. McClamrock, died
on June I9rh.
Surviving arc the husband, two

kcr, of the home; four daughters,
Mrs. Kenneth Ratledge, Route 1;
Mrs. William Summers, Route 3;

Mrs. Maude Sain Wagoner, 59,
died at her home on North Main
street at 9:40 a. m., June 26ih, fol
lowing a long illness.
Mrs. Wagoner was a daughter
of the late Jr. and Mrs. Wiley
Sain, and spent her entire life in
Davie County.
Surviving are the husband, one
son. Grant S. Wagoner, of this
city; two daughters, Miss Ruth
Wagoner, of Stokcsdale, and Mrs.
Sara Holland, of Pittsburgh, Pa.;
two brothers, W. C. Sain, Phoe

at 6:15 p. m., Tuesday of the home
of her nephew, Chas Smith of
Moeksvillc, Route 3.

urday morning at 11 o'clock at
Plymouth Street Church of Christ,
Kannapolis, and the body brought
to his native county and laid to
rest in the Jericho Church of
Christ cemetery, near Mocksville.

Dies In Fayetteville
J. B. Stout, 34, died last Wed
nesday in a Fayetteville hospital
after several weeks of illness.
Mr. Stout was engaged in ice
manufaetudog at LiUington, at
the time of his death. Prior to
moving to LiUington, he was part
owner of the Mocksville Ice and
Fuel Co. and made his home in
Mockaville, for acvcral years.
Funeral services were held at
11 u'cluck Friday at LiUington
Methodist church. Burial wos In
Hamett Memorial cemetery.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Cornelia M. Stout; two sons,
James Buron and Reginald; one

Were conducted Saturday, July 8,
at the Plymouth Street Church
of Christ, by the minister, Rev.
Ralph Brewer, Jr., and the Rev.
James Binkley, of Salisbury. Bur
iial was in the Jericho church
cemetery near Mocksville.
Mr. Stonestrcet was one of the
oldest and best known citizens of
Konnapolis. He was the first post
master at Kannopolis, opening the
postoffice in the textile mill vil
logc in January, 1908, and sold
less than |2 worth of stamps the
first day. He was one of the fore
most leaders of t^e Republican
porty in Cabarrus county. During
the RepubUcan reign Mr. Stone-
street served as clerk of court
from 1913 to 1921.
After retiring from public of-|
fice he operated a grocery store
at Midway. Over the store was
an auditorium, the meeting place
for the Church of Christ and oth
er groups in the community. Mr.
Stonestreet retired from business
10 years ago.
Born in Wilkes county. Sep
tember 25, 1875, he was the son
of Benjamin F. ond^ Kathcrine
Stonestrcet. He moved to Cabar
rus county early in life and op
erated a store at Concord at the
turn of the century.
He was married twice, to Miss
Annie Lents, who .died in 1923,
then to Miss Mary Graham, who
survives.
Surviving are the widow; a
daughter and three sons by the
first marriage. Mrs. Charles P.
Sapp of Concord, Millord and'Ar-
mittc Stonestreet of Konnapolis,
Hubert Stonestrcet of Louisville,
Ky.; four grandchildren; two sis

son of John and Minerva Howard
Taylor. On November 15,1600, he
was married to Miss Georgia By-

A well-known farmer and one
time postman,. Mr. Taylor lived
moat of his life in Advance. He
was a member of Shady Ospve
Methodist church.
Surviving are his wife; a son,

Rufua D. Brown, 50, died at the
Veterans* hospitafin Kecoughtan,
Va., Monday morning. August 7,
where he had been a patient lor
several years.
He was bom in 1000 in Davie
county, son of Mrs. Mack L.
Brown and the late M. D. Brown
of Mocksvillo.
For many years Mr. Brown was
operator of a grocery store in
MocksvUIe. He served a lew
months in training camp during
the first World War. Prior to his
illness he served as gamo warden
for Davie county. ^
He was a member of the Amer
ican Legion and of the local Bap
tist church.
Funeral; services were held on
Wednesday afternoon at the home
on North Main streetl Rev. J. P.
Davis conducted the services. In

DIES IN HOSPITAL
Kin Stanley, 46, of Mockaville,
Route 2, died at 8 p.m. Friday at
the State Hospital in Morganton,
where he hod, been a patient since
Dec. 2 1949.
Born in Davie County July 4,
1004, Mr. Stanley was a son of
Julius and Bessie Button Ston-
loy. Hg was a member of Bciir
Creek Baptist Chuch and was
married March 21, 1930, to Vera
Plowman, who survives.

patient for several days.

Surviving are her husband, H.
Clyde Ratledge; three sons, John
Henry, Jerry Woyne and on in
fant son; and three daughters,

Yvone all of the home; her. par
ents, two brothers, Alfred Tutt
erow of Woodleaf, Route 2, and
Clarence Tutterow of Mocksville,
Route 4; three sisters, Mrs. Clyde

mother, Mrs. E. M. Tutterow of

2 p.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove
Methodist Church. The Rev. J. H.

Henry F. Paidue« 73» died at bis
home at Boonville on Monday of
last week. He had been a teacher
for 52 years, and at one time was
prindiw of theMpcksvlile school.

services were held Wednesday at
the Boonville Methodist Church.
Mr. Pardue was a deacon in the
Baptist Church. His friends in
Davie were saddened by news of
his death.

F. Brown sold Mr. Howell died
of Q heart attack. He had start
ed to a pasture when he was
stricken. His body was found by
members of the family, the coro
ner said.
Mr. Howcll was born in Yad-
kin County Aug. 16, 1067, son of
John ond Amando Ruscll How
cll. Ho spent his entire life in the
county and was a member of
Huntsville Baptist Church. He
was married to Miss Elsie Bor-
ncycastle.

of three months.

mer.

Sydney Conrad Phelps, 58, took
his own life early Sunday morn
ing by tying a cement block
around his neck, another around
his waist, and jumping into the
mlllrace at the Erwin Cotton
Mils, Cooleemee.
His body was found late Sun
day afternoon after the millrace
hod been drained of its 12 to M
feet of water. #
It was reported that Mr. Phelps
had been suffering from a heart
ailment and was often in an ex
treme nervous condtion. Members
of his family said he left home
around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morn
ing in search of some medicine.
When he failed to return, mem
bers of the family instituted
searcr around 5 or 0 a.m. Later in
the day officers wer^ called in
to the search.
W. Phelp's car w^ found park
ed at the bridge near the mill-
race. His hat and billfold were
found In the car.

Draining of the race was begun
around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
On the bottom Mr. Phelp*s body
was found. A.short rope was tied
about the neck and connected
with a large cement* block. An
other cement block was tied to
his waist

Mr. Phelps hod been an em
ployee of the Erwin Cotton Mills
for approximately 30 years. This
past summer he completed and
moved into a new home on Route

He is the son of the late A. W.
and Sarah Jane Safley Phelps of
Davie County.
Hs is survived by his wife, the
former Miss Martha Leonard, a

extended illness.

in the Rose Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife,

rcportedy has a broken back, and
her daughter, Christine, five, who
is improving alter undergoing an
emergency operation Saturday
for internal injuries. Theresa Bar*
nette, 13, a niece of the Call's has
a fractured pelvis. Mr. and Mrs.
George Call ,and John Hugh Shel
ton, all occupants of the car, were
not seriously injured.
On Way To ftuieral
The accident occured shortly
before 10 a.m. Saturday morning
at the stoplight where the Lex
ington Road traverses South
Main Street A dump truck be-
longng to the Dickcrson Con
struction Company of Monroe,
driven by John Griggins of
South Carolina, collided with the
'50 Mercury driven by George
Call,. The automobile was head
ed cast towards Lexington, where
the seven passengers were to at
tend a funeral. The truck was
headed south towards Salisbury.
The truck struck the side of the
car, veered to the left, and con
tinued a short way and over
turned down a slight embank
ment. The truck drivcd escaped
injury.
George Call, his daughter, and
the Shelton child, were reported
thrown from the car. Mr. Call,
however, was not'seriously in
jured. Two ambulances were used
to transport the injured to the
hospital.

After the wreck, Mrs. Shelton
walked around and aided in putt
ing the injured in the ambulan
ces. She rode to the hospital sitt
ing erect on the front seat of the
ambulance. However, upon reach
ing the hospital she reported that
she couldn't move and had to be
carried into the hospital. Later
it was reported that she had a
broken back.
The accident occured when the
driver of one of the vehicles fail
ed to observe the traffic light at

State Highway Patrolman L. E.
Green, who investigated the ac
cident, stated that charges of
reckless driving and involuntary
mapslaughter would probably be

Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Walker, and

For the past 25 years |ie was in
the mercantile business in this
city, retiring a few months ago on
account of ill health.
Mr. Walker's death has brought
sadness to a host of hriends in the
town and county.

icle the death of McGarvey M.
Kurfees, who died at his home in
Louisville, Ky., Wednesday night.
Funeral and burial services took
place in Louisville, Ky., Saturday
morning at 11 o'clock.
Mr. Kurfees is survived by his
wife, two daughters, Mrs. Eliza
beth Kilgus,of Louisville, Ky.; Mrs.
Eleanor Lewis, of Texas, and one
brother, J. F. Kurfees, Louisville.
Mr. Kurfees was a native of Da-
vie County, a son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. lames Peter Kurfees.
He went to Louisville more than
50 years ago, and was a salesman
for the J. F, Kurfees Paint Co., of
that city, until he retired several
years ago.
In the death of Mr. Kurfess the
editor has lost another long-time
friend of nearly half a century.

of years, he had been in declining

died at Davis Hospital, Statesville,
at 9 a. m. Friday. He had been a
patient there five days, following
a stroke.
Mr. Moore was in the lumber
business here for 18 years. He
was a member of the Methodist
Church.
Surviving are two sons, W. L.
Moore, Jr., ot the home, and R.
Moore, of Schenectady. N. Y.; two
daughters; Mrs. Bowman George,
Mt. Airy, and Miss Muriel Moore,
of the home; five grandchildren;
four brothers and five sisters.

Church, near Lexington, where

Cooleemee Woman Dies
From Wreck Injuries
Alberta Brown, Cooleemee No-
gro woman, was fatally injured in
an automobile accident at the
Cooleemee Crossing in Coolee*
mce at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
The accident occurred when the
Brown woman's husband lost con-
trol of the car he was driving ond
it plunged Into the creek at
Cooleemee. The Brown womon
was rushed to Rowan Memorial
hospital, where she died at 8:45
a.m. Sunday, as the result of a
severe head injury and shock.

Frances Foster on Nov. 18, 1006.

Final Rites Held
For Noah Myers
Funeral services for Noah A.
Myers, 70, retired former, who
died Wednesday at his home in
the Courtney section of Yodkin
County, were conducted Friday
afternoon at 2:30 at Deep Creek
Baptist Church of which Mr.
Myers was a member. The Rev.
The Rev. M. F. Rcavis, Rev. R.
E.-Adams-and-RcVi-JrG.-AIIgood
officiated.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Amelia Todd, three daughters,
Mrs. Paul L. Davis of Winston-
Salcm, Mrs. William P. Brandon
of Yodkinville, Route 3, and Mrs.
Johnson Marklin of Mocksvillc;
two sons, Harrison A. Myers and
Claude J. Myers, both of Win-
ston-Salcm; seven grandchildren;
three brothers, Asa and Grovcr
Myers of Route 3, Yodkinville;
and Jonah Myers of Portsmouth,
Va.; and two sisters, Mrs. Belle
Allgood of Route 3, Yodkinville
and Mrs. Eliza Fleming of Pilot
Moutain.
Burial was in the church cem
etery.

Dies Suddenly
Holley Womblc Cox, 35, prom
inent young Hickory merchant,
passed away suddenly Sunday
night of a hcort attack at the
home of his mother, Mrs. A. J.
Cox, In Forest Park. He was a
brother of Rev. A. J. Cox of this
city,
funeral services for Mr. Cox
were conducted Tuesday morning
at Ihc First Methodist Church in
Hickory.
He was a native of Woshlngton,
N. C., where he was born on No
vember 17, 1015, but had spent
the greater part of ihis life in
Hickory.
With his brother, WlHom Cox,
he helped establish the Bill and
Holley Grocery Store, near the
corner of 11th Avenue and 14th
street, in 1037. At the time of
his death he was associated with
bis brother in the oporntinn of
the Big Dollar Food Market in
Hickory.
