One of the most widely known minis
ters and historians in the "Western North
Carolina Conference of The Methodist
Church, Rev. William Lander Sherrill, 93,
of 1819 Queens Rd., died in Charlotte at
about 10 o'clock the morning of July 15.
He made his home with his son, H. Con
nor Sherrill, and Mrs. Sherrill.
Funeral services were conducted at 4
p.m. July 16 at First Methodist Church,
Lincolnton-, and interment was in the
family plot at Rehoboth Methodist
Church, Sherrill's Ford, Catawba County.

From 1906 to 1911 he was associate editor
of The North Carolina Christian Advo
cate, official organ of The Methodist
Church in this state. He was a member
of the General Conference in 1910. and
secretary-treasurer of the Conference
Board of Education from 1925 to 1929.
Accurate Historian
Exceptionally accurate as a historian, he
was the author of "The Annals of Lin
coln County," and several other books of
historical and religious character. His at
tainments as conference officer, preacher
and writer elicited praise. His knowledge
of Methodism, through successive gener
ations, was repeatedly acclaimed.
On May 21, 1884, he was married to Miss
Louetta Connor of Catawba County. She
died in November, 1941. Surviving is their
son, Henry Connor Sherrill, long a promi
nent figure in the business life of Char
lotte. The noted nonagenarian had lived
with-Mr. and Mrs. Sherrill, his son and
daughter-in-law, at 1819 Queens Rd.,
about 12 years.
A lineal descendant of early American
patriots, he served several years as state
chaplain of the Sons of the American

Native of Lincoln County
A native of Lincoln County, vener
able minister, son of Samuel Pinckney
Sherrill and Sarah Catherine (Lander)
Sherrill, was born Feb. 9, 1860. He was
educated at Lincolnton Academy.
He began his long and fruitful career
as a pharmacist in Dallas, Gaston County,
and served a term as mayor of that mu
nicipality. In 1890 he was admitted on
trial, as a clerical member of the Western
North Carolina Conference; into .ull con
nection in 1892; was ordained as a deacon
in 1893 and as an elder one year later.

held at the Winthrop Friends
Church Monday., Mrs. E. G. Key,

Mr. Sharp^ died at Davis Hos
pital, Slatosville, Saturday, He
had been ill for several months
ani in serious condition for about
a week.
Mr. Sharpe was a native and
lifelong resident of Ircdcll Coun
ty, a son of W. Q. and Mary Slack
Sharpe. He taught in the Irodoll
schools for 30 years and also was
a farmer and merchant, and a
large land holder.
Surviving are his wife; the for
mer Martha York; and four niec
es and four nephews. He was a
brother of the late J. W. Sharpe
and John C. Sharpe, who practic
ed law in Statesville for several
.years.

Auto Collision Saturday
Two Cars Meet Head-On
On Curve on Godbey Rd.

was 'fatally injured in a two-car
collision Saturday around 11:45
a.m. .The accident occured about
seven-tenths of a mile west of the
Godbey bridge, on the Godbey
Road.
Mr. Walker was taken ^ to the
Davis Ilospilol, Statesville, where
he dic^ at 2:10 p.m. of chest and
internal injuries.
Thomas R. Talbert, 17,of Union
Grove, driver of the other car,
and Coyie Wayne Cummings, 25,
Hamptonvillc, Route 2. were ad
mitted to the same hospits) with
serious injuries. Talbert suffered
a broken right arm, leg injuries
and shock. Cummings received
head injuries, a broken arm and
possible internal injuries.
Highway Patrolmen T. J. Bad-
gctt and A. W. Cox, who Investi-
golcd the wreck, reported the
cars apparently met head-on In
the center of a curve. Both cars
were demolished.
Funeral services for Mr. Wal
ker wore conducted Monday at,
the Salem Methodist Church.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Walker and had spent his
entire life in Davlo County near
the Iredcl! County lino. Kc was
on instructor in the VA farm;
training program.

early life until he moved to Char
lotte where he joined the St.
James Methodist Church. He has

Mr. Dwiggins died of a heart)

Mrs. McKnight died Friday
night in Hoots Hospital, Yadkin-
viDc. She had been in declining
health for a year and critically
111 for the past two weeks.
She was born in Davie County
March 16, 1886. She was married
to Pink McKnight on Feb. 14,190S.
Mrs. McKnight had lived in
her home community all of her

Co., of Greensboro for more than
a quarter of a century. He went
Into the retail hardwore business
here about 30 years ago, assisted
by his so'.is, J. K. and Thomas
Meroney, and condnueJ the busi
ness until his death.
Mr. Meroney was a son of the

roonev of Mocksvilie. Mr. Me*

Sunday when his car overturned
on Highway 158, five miles north
of Mocksville.
Mr. Tucker. 24, died at Baptist
Hospital In Winston « Salem two
hours after the accident. This
was Davic County's fourth high
way fatality for 1953.
A companion Mrs. Ann Micha-
lovc, 40, of Mocksville, Rt. 2, wos
treated ot the Baptist Hospital
for face and body lacerations and
then released.
Investigating oUicers reported
that Mr. Tucker lost control of
his cor ond thai It ran olf the left
side of the road and overturned
in front of Smith Grove Metho
dist Church.
The accident was invcsllgated
by Patrolman E. M. Jones.and
Sheriff G. Alex Tucker.
Mr. Tucker wos born March
200, 1920, In Davic County. He
was the son of Hillary ond Ellen
Riddle Ificker He was employed
in the sawmilling business with
a brothcr-ln-low, Guy Cornatzcr.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs.

December when he sailed for the

He was a member of the Cool

He is survived by his wife,

married to Alexander Keller, who

Until six weeks ago she had
made her home with a son, James

Francis Rush Allen, 93 year old
retired farmer of the Farmington
community, was burned to' death
Saturday morning when his three
roojn log house went up In flames.
The, remains of Mr. Allen, who
had lived nlpno since his wife died
In 1934, were found In the em
bers of his home on Mocksvlllc,
Rt. 2, Farmington .community.
The fire was discovered about
11 a.m. by a passing motorist,
Duron Lakey. The hack portion
of the house was ablaze at that
time.
Lakey Drove to the S. W. Fur-
ches home, a slmrl distance up
the road. Mr. Furches, Mr. Lakey
and J. F. Allen, son of the dead
man who also resided nearby went
to'the burning house, but the
house was completely afire tmd
was ready to cave in.

killed instantly Friday evening at
7:30 o'clock when he was crossing
the highway in front of his home

The accident was investigated

Mr. Hendrix is survived by his

Man Dies In
Fire at Home
James Badger Cook, 81, a farm
er and sawmill operator of Yad-
kinville, ,Rt. 3, Liberty Church
community of Davic County, was
burned to death about 6 a.m.,
Thanksgiving morning in a fire
that destroyed his home.
Mr. Cook lived in the two room
house with a son, Ray. Ray awoke
Tliursday morning with the house
totally on fire. ITc stated that
he did not see his father and made
his escape, suffering burns about
iho face and hands.
The remains of the older Mr.
Cook was found' later near the
bed.

Saturday in a Wnyncsvillo hos
pital. Death was attributed to a
heart ailment.

ducted the funeral services. Bur
ial was in the Memorial Ceme
tery in Konnopolis. •
Dr. Connell was' stricken by.a
heart o'tack on Nov. 27 while on
n deer hunt some 18 miles from
Waynesville. He became ill after
ctimhing approximately 400 yards
to his post in the woods.
At the time Dr. Connell did not
realize the seriousness of his ill
ness and instructed friends In the

hunt. Ho made his Vva^ dotvn the
mountainside and drove back to
Waynesville to seek medical at
tention. Ho had remained in the
hospital at Waynesville since then.
Dr. Connell was born in Meck
lenburg County, son of John and
Margaret Robinson Connell. He
moved with his paren's lo-JCim-
napoUs at an cnrly age and lived
there until young manhood.
He attended Wingate Junior
Collcgo, Wake Forest College and
received his bachelor of arts de
gree from Catawba Collogo at
Salisbury. He later attended the
Southern Baptist Seminary in
Louisville, Kentucky, and receiv
ed a master of theology degree

Mr. Clement served as Regis
ter of Deeds of Davic County
