I hope the time willcome when our children apjjreciate that a little more." >. Blacks from Davie County don't have an excuse for a lack of education, Gaither said.Even though lacking in money and materials,the teachers here were outstanding."Mocksville has been blessed witheducators," Gaither said, "'sb these-blackchildren didn't have any excuse for not learning. Ail we lacked was equipment. We gotthe used books after they had been used bythe white people."Jones said she is proud of the black studentswho first went into the integrated schools, Herdaugther was one."We are very proud of our children whohad to go into the totally integrated schools,"she said. "It was a big adjustment for them.They've done well — real well. They had astruggle — but they've done well."Jones also knows about the quality of education Davie blacks were offered. She movedfrom Davie County to Pennsylvania while inhigh school, and was ready to graduate there-although in the 11th grade.Gaither said teachers, including SundaySchool teachers, must make the classesinteresting."Those little children need some pep," shesaid. "Let them know that God is real. Several years later, the churjbh was torn down and the second church was built where the present church stands. In 1927, the church was remodeled under the leadership of the Rev. A. A. Adjohoe. Bishop Cecil Bishop will visit St. John AME Zion Church in Mocksvilie during an Episcopal visit. The pastor, the Rev. George C. Banks, looks forward with anticipa tion, pride and gratitude as one of Ebony magazine 's 100 most influential African American leaders in America will grace the church on 145 Campbell Road in Mocksvilie. Bishop is the senior bishop of the African Methodist Episco pal Zion Church and presiding bishop of the Piedmont Episco pal District. The AME Zion Church has congregations all over the world and boasts a membership of more than 2 million. One of his many degrees is from Livingstone College. Bishop earned a doctorate of divinity degree and serves as chair of the board of trustees at Livingstone. "However, education does not totally make a m^; life and its experiences shape a man into his true form," said St John member Julius Suiter. 'Though his beginnings stem from Pitts burgh, Pa., Bishop's path has led him far into the world and eventually to our neck of the global woods. Bishop's experiences have taken him to the far lands of Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Maryland and finally to the southern half of the United States. In May of 1980, Bishop was elected the 78th bishop in the line of succession in the church. He serves the district which includes the Western North Carolina, Westem Central North Carolina, Blue Ridge area, and Jamaica confer ences, all divisions. Through all of his travels, his wife, Marlene Y. Adams, and son, Jason Ryan Bishop, and daughter, Dana Elizabeth Bishop, have shared in his life's work to spread the Word and joy of God.
